Ch. 14 pt 1

"Did you put the stroller in the trunk? You double checked that the car seat base was installed properly, right? The diaper bag; it has the baby's first outfit and plenty of onesies and socks and..." Maura listed off before Jane could put a stop to the barage of questions.

"I have double, triple, and quadruple checked that everything is ready to go. We just need to get ourselves to the hospital." Jane assured.

Maura was putting on a very good performance of a childhood toy, (The spinning top kind) trying to locate whatever she had last added to her list from before Jane had interrupted her.

"Maura, my love. We have everything. Onesies, hats, socks, blankets, diapers, camera, your bag with pajamas, creams, slippers, including the outfits you'll both be wearing out of the hospital. We are, 100% ready!" Jane had stopped Maura from her frantic bout of searching and checklist monitoring.

Maura settled into a look of appeasment and took the hand Jane held out for her to take to lead them out to car.

To further calm the, slightly still-on-edge, doctor Jane offered up a pep talk.

"Maur, we've followed the doctor's instructions to the T from day one and without zero flaws. You're brilliance has provided our child with the healthiest and most cared for home for the last nine months. So much so, your water broke on the actual due date provided by Dr. Gomez. Everything is going to work out."

Using the car door for support, Maura pulled into her to bestow a kiss filled love and gratitude for the dark haired detective. And, as soon as she released her, the effects of the first contraction could be felt. "Oh my!" Maura huffed.

"What is it?" Janed queried.

"It's starting!" Maura replied.

"Oh boy...let's get you in the car and to that hospital. Dr. Gomez is already there." Jane added and gently guided the momma-to-be into the passenger seat.

-
"Okay, admin stuff is taken care of." Jane supplied as she inspected the room Maura was taken to.

"I'm really glad we did the tour thing with our Lamaze class. This is exactly like room we saw." Jane said with a pleased expression.

Maura shook her head in agreement as she breathed, heavily, through another contraction.

"They're getting closer." Jane stated.

"Yes." Maura confirmed. "Seven minutes apart."

Just then, Dr. Gomez made her appearance into the room.

"Hello Maura, Jane. Ready for the big show?" The scrubs-adorned doctor announced her entrance.

"Sure are!" Jane answered.

Dr. Gomez studied the CTG.

"So far, things look to be progressing rather swiftly. That may change, though. I'm going to go through a detailed examination." The obstetrician announced.

"How long ago did your water break?" Dr. Gomez questioned.

"Let's see, we've been here about twenty minutes. It took us fifteen minutes to get here. Maura spun in circles for about five minutes after her water broke trying to prepare to leave and another five minutes assuring her we were ready before we got in the car so, approximately 45 minutes ago." Jane calculated out loud.

"Thanks for the specificity, Jane." Dr. Gomez replied with a slight smirk. She was able to quickly compose herself to continue with her examination. I'm going to check your cervix now..."

Just then, Maura chimed in, "to see how dilated I am." Not questioning, working ahead of the obstetrician.

The woman just smiled and nodded her head in assent.

"So, you're sitting at three centimeters and, considering you've only been in labor for 45 minutes, I'd say this may be a quick delivery. Just to reiterate the plan, you want to go completely natural. No drugs unless absolutely necessary, correct?" The doctor aimed at the couple.

"Yes." Jane and Maura said in unison and with joined hands.

After a short time of staring deeply into each other's eyes, Maura and Jane began to stir and got about moving things along.

"I promised Ma I'd let her know when the doctor was going to start prepping you so she and the boys could start heading out." Jane stated while pulling out her phone.

Could you also call Cailin? She wants to be here, too." Maura asked.

"Of course, Hon. I don't think I have her number though." Jane replied.

"That's okay, just use my phone." Maura handed the detective her android.

"I'll be back in a minute. Just gonna make these calls out in the hall while they finish setting you up." Jane kissed Maura on the lips before leaving the room.

When Jane returned to the room, the place had turned into a full on production. Nurses covered in gowns, monitors beeping, orders given and executed. Jane, at first, had thought it a chaotic mess. But, after further review, she decided it was more of a well rehearsed play and Maura was the star. Everyone involved made sure they played their roles to the best of their abilities so that her performance would go flawlessly.

Not quite an hour had passed before Dr. Gomez had, once again, made her appearance to check on Maura's progress.

"Looks like you've been busy in here. Quite a few contractions have been marked by the CTG. Are you in much pain?" The doctor asked.

"Some but, nothing the breathing exercises and back rubbing from Jane's magic hands couldn't soothe." Maura replied in her true fashion of honesty.

Jane could only blush at the compliment.

"Well, I've got some good news and some bad news." The doctor said with a slightly ominous tone though, the twinkle in her didn't match.

"What's wrong Dr. Gomez? Is the baby breached? Do we have to switch to an emergency cessarian?" Maura wondered out loud.

"No. No. Sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you. The baby is fine. You're fine. I just hope you weren't planning on having anyone else in the room with you while you deliver because you're at nine centimeters. It's time. I'm just amazed you're doing so well! This little one is coming."

Jane leaned in to whisper in Maura's ear. "You were made to have my baby."

The pride swelled in both women.
