Paris Dreams
~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~
She always wanted to visit Paris—that was one of the first things she ever told him. He closes his eyes and remembers her warm brown eyes, her bright smile, the friendly commentary she kept up that first day of freshman seminar. She didn't know it then, but she captured his heart that very first hour.
She told him he'd make it big someday. They would go on the road with his music, and she would design her own clothing line that she would debut in… Paris. She really wanted to visit Paris.
Those days were easy—simple—back before things like mortgages and taxes, lawn mowers and washing machines. Before car accidents and comas. Before the end…
It took him days to leave their room, weeks to leave their house, and months to begin to live again. Now five years have passed and he is finally following her dreams.
He left his job behind and went on the road. He plays to small crowds and larger ones, but he really plays to her. She's on the front row every time, every show, every song. She's the one he sings to, the one he smiles at, the one he writes about.
Today she's on the balcony next to him, looking out over the busy streets of her Mecca. Paris. He knows she's here with him, he can feel her warmth on his bare skin, see her smile in the sunlight.
The silver vial of her ashes rests right over his heart, keeping her close, keeping him sane. She promised him forever, but forever wasn't hers to promise. He thought she could see the future, but he never realized he would have to go that way alone.
His fingers pluck the strings, and he sings to her…
