Sleep


Lying side by side, the two women stared up at the ceiling above them, unable to find sleep. They each counted off the minutes as they passed, waiting patiently for anything to change.

Hours passed and nothing did.

They didn't move.

They didn't sleep.

They spoke.

"Do you know what it's like to lie awake in bed, with thoughts that haunt you every night of all your past mistakes," Carmon asked quietly, her voice thick with repressed emotion, "Knowing sleep will set it right, if only you were not to wake?"

Beside the teen, M pictured the man she'd handed over to the Chinese, "Yes."
