Thor also saw where they were heading, and he looked back at Loki who still had the smile on his face.
"Loki..." Thor started.
"If it were easy everyone would do it." Loki contradicted.
"Are you mad?" Thor asked him, moving closer to Jane to protect her.
"Possibly." Loki told him, his smile growing wider.
"Definately." Eris told them as they entered a hole in the rocks and she watched as lights starting flashing past the boat that they were in until they suddenly found themselves on a barren wasteland.
"Tadah!" Loki told them, causing Eris to smile, before it suddenly faded as Eris saw her skin turn grey and her shade veins appear, but this was anything but normal. She started to feel weak, and as she suddenly fell to her knees, Thor looked over.
"Eris..." Thor's words spurred Loki into action and he knelt beside his wife and he gently touched her hands.
"You're as cold as ice...Eris...What's happening?" Loki asked her, moving her hair from her face.
"I don't know..." She whispered, before she suddenly returned to normal.
"It must be the ether, maybe it's a weakness to Shades." Jane told her, though she sounded weak as well.
Thor and Loki looked between each other, then at the women, before Loki helped Eris get to her feet and they agreed to keep the women as separate as possible until this thing was resolved.
Throughout the night, as Loki flew the ship, he kept a close eye on Eris as Thor kept a close eye on Jane. Though neither of them had another episode of weakness, Jane remained the same, as it grew dark, Eris threw Thor a blanket and she watched him put it over Jane as she fell asleep and Eris sat on the side of the boat near Loki. Everyone was silent for a while, or at least until Loki spoke.
"What I could do with the power that flows through those veins." Loki sighed, causing Eris to look at him.
"It would consume you." Thor told him as he sat by Jane.
"Well she's holding up alright, for now." Loki told him.
"She's not an insane lunatic, you are." Eris told him, but Loki knew that she meant well.
"She's stronger than you in ways that you have never even known."
"Make sure you say goodbye." Loki told him, causing Eris to hit him in the arm.
"Not today." Thor told him.
"This day or the next, her life is nothing but a heartbeat to the rest of us; you will never be ready to say goodbye to her, and who will be left to pick up the pieces?" Loki asked. "The rest of us."
"And when her life is taken, will that satisfy you?" Thor asked him, looking over at Loki who had gotten to his feet.
"Satisfaction isn't in my nature."
"Surrender is not in mine."
"Son of Odin." Loki laughed.
"No, not just of Odin." Thor told him as the two gods squared up to each other. "You think that you alone were loved of mother, you had her tricks, but I had her trust."
"Trust? Was that what she gave you when you let her die?" Loki asked.
"And what help were you in your cell?" Thor asked. "The only help was Eris and even she let her die!"
No one stopped to look at Eris who had moved away from them and curled in on herself as she listened. They were too wrapped up in their argument.
"Who put me there!" Loki demanded, before Thor suddenly pinned him to the side of the boat.
"You know damned well, you know damned well who!" Thor thundered, and he was about to punch Loki, but something held him back. "She wouldn't want us to fight."
"Well she wouldn't exactly be shocked." Loki told him.
Thor looked over at Eris who this time had changed position to swing her legs over the side of the boat, and this made him realise what he said about his mother's death, and in turn so did Loki.
"Eris...Forgive me..." Thor told her, walking over to her and resting a hand on her shoulder, feeling how cold she was. "Eris..."
"I already knew it was my fault." She told him. "I didn't react quickly enough." She looked back as she felt a blanket be put round her and she saw Thor behind her. "I had to watch my mistake and know that I couldn't bring her back. She wasn't just the mother to the two princes of Asgard; she was the Queen and my mother as well."
"I understand that Eris, and I swear that I didn't mean what I said, you done all you could." Thor told her, and Loki looked at the ground.
From there the three gods travelled in silence, until it became light and Jane stirred as Thor tended to her, Eris jumped up onto the side of the boat and she stood right on the edge looking out over the area they had accommodated and she noticed a Dark Elf ship coming towards them, fortunately Jane saw it too.
"Malekith." Both Jane and Eris whispered.
With that, Loki landed their boat on top of a large pile of rocks and dust and they all climbed off. When they were ready, they walked towards the edge and the three gods stood side by side looking out. As they watched Malekith leave the safety of his ship Eris rolled her eyes.
"Well, someone comes prepared." She muttered.
Thor and Loki just looked at her, but Loki smirked, after working out what she had meant about her sentence.
"Right, are you ready?" Thor asked, looking back at Jane, who nodded timidly.
"I am." Loki told him causing everyone but Eris to look at him. "You know this plan of yours is going to get all of us killed." Loki told him.
"Possibly, going to get us killed." Thor told him, looking at him as he held his shackled wrists out to him.
"You still don't trust me?" Loki asked.
"Would you?" Thor asked, causing Eris to smirk, before he uncuffed Loki.
"No I wouldn't." Loki told him, before he suddenly plunged a dagger into Thor and threw him down the hill, before Loki walked down after him.
"Thor!" Jane screamed, running down after the two brothers as Eris stayed at the top, perfectly hidden as she crouched down.
From where she had stayed, Eris could watch what was happening and she watched as Loki caught up with the fast falling Thor, just as Thor tried to get himself up to fight back.
"Do you really think I cared about Frigga?" Loki asked, kicking his brother while he was down. "Do you think I cared about any of you?" He asked. "All I wanted was you and Odin, dead at my feet!" As Loki spoke, Thor looked around and he saw Jane running towards them and his hammer lying discarded not far away, so he reached out a hand and called his hammer to him. However, as the hammer was about to be caught, Loki suddenly used his dagger and sliced off Thor's hand, making Thor call out as Jane reached them, falling to Thor's side. Then she saw Malekith getting closer and Loki picked up Jane, turning to face the Dark Elf.
"No!" Jane screamed.
"Malekith! I am Loki of Jotenheim, and I bring you a gift!" He told him, throwing Jane down at his feet. "I ask for only one thing in return, a good seat from which to watch Asgard burn!"
Everyone watched as the creature that killed Frigga stood beside Malekith and told him something that not even Eris could hear, before he walked over to Thor.
"Look at me." He commanded, and when he didn't obey, he kicked him onto his back, before he kept his eyes on Thor and watched as he extracted the Ether from Jane's body.
Watching, Eris took this as her signal and she sunk under the ground, as she heard Thor's voice, when Jane dropped to the floor.
"Loki, Eris, now!" Thor shouted, gaining his hand back and calling for Mjolnir, as Loki shielded Jane and Eris appeared. Together, Eris and Thor shot their powers at the Ether that was still floating in the air. Seconds passed, before there was a deafening explosion and everyone looked around as the dust cleared, revealing red crystals that started to float around before the crystals turned back into the Ether and forged with Malekiths body anyway. As Malekith turned to go back to his ship, his minions attacked Thor and Eris, and after a quick glance at each other, the two started to fight back, heading straight for Malekith, only Thor turned back when he saw that a bomb had been thrown at Jane and Loki, and he saw Loki push Jane out of the way, but he got caught in the blast. Eris was busy keeping the minions at bay, as Thor saved his brother. From there both brothers went back to the battle, as Eris carried on, and when she'd stopped some creatures, she looked for them and saw Thor taking on the large creature and Loki being kept busy by the others, then her eyes fell on Jane, she was trying to get away from another creature. This time, Eris didn't think, she moved at a blur and had suddenly tackled the other creature into a rock. From there, the two almost began a type of boxing match, hitting each other wherever they could to gain advantage. At one point, they had each other locked in position, Eris in her full shade form, her dark eyes boring into that of the creature, but then she jolted, and Jane saw why, the creature had somehow managed to shove a dagger into Eris' chest, straight through her heart. As Eris faltered, the creature pulled the dagger out, and on it was a wisp of something black and Jane recognised it – Eris' heart! Letting out a scream, she watched Eris pick up her swords and suddenly gave a battle cry and off went the creature's head, before Eris fell to the ground.
Hearing Jane scream, Loki paused for a second and he turned just in time to see Eris fall, and he quickly ran over as Jane tried to stem the flow of black liquid which came from the hole in Eris' chest.
"Eris..." Loki knelt beside her, lifting her head onto his lap.
"Loki..." Eris got out, though it was getting harder.
"Shh, just rest my love." He told her kissing her forehead.
"Loki...Look after the children..." She whispered.
"I will, and so will you." He kissed her lips.
"I'm sorry..." She whispered, before she trailed off and Loki felt her go limp in his arms as her skin turned dark grey and her veins went black as tears of silver fell from her eyes.
"Eris, I love you..." Loki sighed, kissing her lips on last time, he didn't cry, trying to keep it together, and he looked up hearing Thor's fight and he looked at Jane. "Stay with her." He picked up one of Eris' swords before he walked towards his brother and the creature.
Jane watched him leave, failing to hold back her own tears as she rested her head on that of Eris' chest, not caring if she got covered in Eris' blood in the process. However, she looked over just in time to see Loki stab one of the weapons that he had picked up into the creature that was fighting Thor, but then the creature turned to face him and before she knew it, she heard a cry from Thor as Loki was almost impaled on the weapon.
"See you in hell, monster." Thor heard Loki tell the creature, before there was an explosion and the creature was suddenly engulfed into a black hole.
When the black hole had vanished, Thor ran to his brother, holding him in his arms to keep him ever so slightly upright.
"Oh you fool, you didn't listen." Thor told him, holding back his anger and sadness that his brother was dying in his arms.
"I-I am a fool." Loki told him, his voice fading.
"Stay with me." Thor pleaded. "Stay with me." He told him, pressing his hand over his brother's wound as he looked around. "Eris, come help him!"
"It's no use…She's dead." Loki told him. "I'm sorry" He choked out.
"Sh, it's alright." He told him. "I'll tell father, what you did here today." Thor promised.
"I didn't do it for him." Loki told him. "Look after my children Thor, they-they need someone."
"You can do that yourself." Thor told him, before he noticed that his brother had gone still, and he tried to gently shake him awake, but soon realized that like his wife, Loki was gone too. "NO!" Thor cried.
When Thor had managed to pull himself together, he noticed that the winds had picked up, so he lay his brother down, before he walked to where Jane was still sitting with Eris and after consoling his lover, he picked up Eris' body and brought her over to where Loki lay and he lay them together, Eris' head on Loki's chest and then he and Jane left to take shelter. Thor would destroy Malekith and he would do it in the name of his brother and his sister-in-law and for his now orphaned niece and nephew that were back on Asgard, oblivious to the fate of their mother and father.
