Chapter Seventeen: First (Baby) Steps

Chase's P.O.V

I can't help the smile that threatens to escape while my heart swells from pride and joy as my little girl stands. She had used the couch as support and the face she made as she stood for the first time was precious. Her little well sculpted brows furrowed when she looked down at her tiny clad feet in shiny black shoes with little bows on the straps. Her polka dot dress reached her knees and her wavy brown hair was in pigtails.

Now, I'm trying to coax her to walk towards me while holding my phone to record it.

"Pa!" She giggles slamming her fists on the couch.

"Yes baby, I love you so much," I smile and blow kisses.

She breaks into a fit of uncontrolled giggles. I can see her two bottom teeth poking through as she smiles brightly. My little girl is already eight months and I'm eighteen weeks into my second pregnancy, with twins no less. Each day is getting harder and harder to hide but I have the support of Adam and Marcus, it makes me feel a bit better although I feel like crying. My emotions have been wracking havoc in my body, worse than when I was expecting Audrey. Even now I feel like crying.

I sniffle just as the door opens to reveal a weary Adam. I smile up at him as soon as I see him, but I can see how tired he is from working.

"Dada!" Audrey squeals.

I stare as she lets go and wobbles her way to Adam. Adam is shocked to see our baby so grown up. Audrey stops mid way and her brows furrow again until she falls down and lands with a soft thud on her behind. The dress splays beautifully around her as she looks confused. Then the water works start. She cries, loud.

I immediately get up, with some difficulty, and make to pick her up. The phone is long gone but thankfully I got the shot.

"There, there, sweetheart," I coo as I bounce her in my arms.

Adam swoops in and takes her from my arms. He presses kisses all over her face and wipes away the tears that were mostly from the shock.

"I'm so proud of my little princess. Yes I am," he smiles.

My hand subconsciously goes to my growing belly and my eyes fill with tears. Adam turns to face me and he coos at me lovingly. With a free hand, he wipes away my tears like he did with our daughter and presses a kiss to my forehead.

"You must be tired," he says softly.

I shake my head in denial, "not like you."

He gives me a smile but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.

"Adam?" I place a tentative hand on his arm but he simply pulls me in by my waist.

His lips press to mine while our baby settles tiredly between us.

"She fell asleep," he whispers when we part.

I face my baby girl and find her fast asleep. Her head rests on daddy's shoulder and her hand holds on to Adam's shirt tightly in a tiny fist.

"So she is," I smirk.

"Come on," he pulls me by my hand.

I gladly let him lead the way.

Adam's P.O.V

Chase looks like he's glowing, his belly is bigger than when he was with Audrey though I'm sure our little girl was small because of the stress. Now, the twins are harder to hide and after my surprise, I want us to tell the family.

"Pa," Audrey groans as I place her in her crib.

Chase steps around me and carefully undresses her to put on her pjs. Then he takes off her ponytails and kisses her forehead and cheek, I do the same before walking out.

"What's going on?" Chase asks once we step outside the nursery.

I take a deep breath but instead of answering, my arms wrap around his waist and I pull him close to my body.

"I love you," I reply.

His tense muscles soon relax in my arms.

"We need to go," I continue.

"Go?"

I nod.

"What about Audrey?" He asks with a slight pout.

I smile, "she'll be alright here."

"O-Okay," he agrees reluctantly.

I grab a light sweater for him to wear and then lead him out to the car. I'm still in my work clothes but where we're going it doesn't matter.

I put my seat belt on and when I'm sure Chase has his, ever so slightly pressed to his swelling belly, I turn the car on and drive.

I can practically feel how anxious Chase is and I grasp his smaller hand in mine. He relaxes a bit and eventually drifts off.

Two more weeks have passed and in another two, Chase will be in his fifth month of pregnancy. My heart beats just a little faster as I think about it.

We arrive at a small cabin that Mr. Davenport has listed in his properties which is how I came across it. It's the closest to home and perfect for what I plan. There's privacy and no one around for a few miles yet.

I put the car in park and get out to make my way to the passenger side and carefully open the door to lightly shake Chase awake. He groans tiredly, the babies making him more exhausted as they use his energy.

" 'dam?" He mumbles as his eyes flutter open.

"Hey there," I smile.

I pick him up in my arms and he wraps his arms around my neck while his head rests in the juncture between my neck and shoulder. Light puffs of his breath tickling my skin.

"I need you to stay awake," I say.

He nods but doesn't move until we step inside, not an easy task with an overgrown baby in my arms.

I say as much.

He grumbles annoyed and pinches my nape. I yelp but end up chuckling and cautiously place him down on his feet. I steady him as he sways a bit.

Then his eyes travel to the set up I worked so hard to do.

A small gasp leaves his lips and a smile adorns his face.

"Adam," he breathes.

"Shall we eat?" I ask.

He nods quickly causing me to laugh. I bow as I direct him to the small table for two.

There's a white candle burning with a yellow flame occasionally flickering orange. Two plates with Chase's favorite food is in each side and silverware lie next to them. There are two wine glass filled with what was supposed to be champagne but now is non-alcoholic apple cider, two sticks of sweet cinnamon are in it as decoration. The table is draped in a white cloth with a few scattered rose petals.

I pull out the chair for Chase and watch as he takes a seat, a permanent smile with a rosy hue on his cheeks. I take my own seat and the night begins.

"This is so good," he moans.

"Glad you liked it," I smile as we near the end.

"Thank you," he blushes.

"It's not over," I smirk.

"It's not?" He asks curiously.

I rise to my feet and go retrieve dessert. My heart pounds loudly as I check over everything one last time. Taking a deep breath I bring the plate out.

Chase smiles brightly when he sees me until I put the plate in front of him.

His eyes grow wide and soon a tear slides down his cheek, his breathing a bit erratic.

There's a slice of chocolate truffle cake in the center with a heart shaped strawberry on top and in it a ring. Around the cake is a chocolate drizzled heart and at the bottom, "Will you marry me?" in cursive.

He looks at me with wide eyes to find me on one knee beside him.

"Will you marry me?" I ask hesitantly.

He bites his plush lip and he nods before throwing himself at me when I stand. I catch him and spin him around as he laughs choked up with tears.

"Yes!"

I kiss him hard, leaving him breathless.

I take the ring and clean it before sliding it on his thin ring finger. The small diamond shines with the candlelight. I quickly lead Chase to our room, the bed covered in white sheets and more rose petals. I guide him to the bed and help him sit.

"I love you," I whisper as I kneel between his thighs parted just for me.

"I love you so much," and I kiss his belly.

"Adam?" He sniffles.

"You complete me," another kiss, "make me feel whole. I trust you as you trust me and I thank you for our children."

As I say that my hand strays to his belly.

"Lets change these baby steps... Make love to me?" I question rather timid.

He's crying, an emotional wreck, while he nods, "okay. Okay Adam. I love you."

It's slow and languid, no hurry to be done. This is special. This is me baring myself for the man I love with everything that I am.
