AN- I'm so sorry that I'm posting late again! I got really sick for a week and a half, and then I needed to catch up in all of my classes, so I had no time to write. Please forgive me! :) Anyways, here's chapter 16. Hope you like it!
June 5th, 1832
Enjolras awoke early the next morning. Today was the day. Today, France would be set free.
Enjolras stole out of his room, careful not to wake Eponine. She had a hard day, so he decided to let her sleep. She deserved it, and Enjolras needed some time alone to think.
Why did she kiss me? He asked himself. Enjolras started to make breakfast. Why now, with the revolution right on the horizon? How am I supposed to concentrate when I can't get that kiss out of my head?
What puzzled Enjolras the most was the fact that now he craved to kiss her again. Enjolras had never craved something like that before. It was extremely strange.
Eponine awoke 3 hours later to an empty house. Enjolras opted to not waking Eponine; he figured that if he didn't, she might stay away from the barricade. Of course, that wasn't going to happen.
Eponine got up and ate a quick-lunch. She then, quickly, got dressed in some of Enjolras's old clothes, stuffed her hair in her favorite newsboys cap, and left for the funeral.
The funeral procession was just passing Les Amis de l'ABC when Eponine arrived. Disguised as a boy, no one recognized her.
The next few minutes went by in a blur. Together, Enjolras and Marius ran out and took control over the hearse holding General Lamarque's body. The rest of Les Amis surrounded them, making sure nothing happened to them. Random citizens of France joined in with them, knocking soldiers off their horses, pushing the priests out-of-the-way, and causing chaos.
Eponine, during all of this, was sitting on the edge of General Lamarque's hearse, keeping an eye on Marius.
That's when the National Guard rode up on their horses, guns and swords ready.
"Hold your fire!" yelled the captain of the guard.
Bang! A loud shot rang out, and an innocent, old woman fell dead.
"You killed an innocent woman!" yelled Bossuet. That's when the real chaos began. The National Guard started shooting their guns and slashing their swords at the crowd, but they never hit one of Les Amis. A few innocent people paid the price of being at the wrong place, at the wrong time.
Enjolras and Marius commandeered two horses of dead guard's men. "To the barricades!" commanded Enjolras.
Les Amis de l'ABC and a few other citizens of France joined together to build the barricade. They built it in front of a wine shop, using the shop as a makeshift infirmary, in case of injuries. Joly was going to be their physician.
While they were building the barricade, Javert showed up, dressed like a schoolboy. He had planned on spying on the young revolutionaries.
"We need someone to find out what the enemies plan of attack is!" Enjolras said. "Who will go?" This was Javert's chance to ruin these boys.
"I will go! I know their ways. I'll find the truth." Javert then left to "spy" on the enemy. Unfortunately, the boys didn't know that their spy wasn't on their side.
Later that night
By sundown, the barricade was complete. Eponine did a pretty good job at not being recognized until she ran into a day dreaming Marius.
"Oh, pardon me, Mon-" Marius started. Then he realized that he wasn't speaking to a young boy, but that he was speaking to a disguised Eponine. "Eponine? What are you doing here?" Worry filled Marius's eyes. He didn't want his best getting hurt, or worse…
"I know it isn't safe, but I just want to be here with you," she explained.
"Eponine, get out of here before you get hurt!" he exclaimed.
She laughed. "You really must care about me if you don't want to see me hurt."
Marius realized then that Eponine could help him. "Eponine, you're an answer to a prayer! Please, take this letter to Cosette. She's leaving tonight, but maybe she'll still be there." He then pushed a note into Eponine's hand.
Eponine looked down into her hand. There, the note lied, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to deliver it.
Why should I do it? Eponine asked herself. Why should I deliver the letter? She knew why. She knew that she couldn't not deliver the letter, so she started the long walk to the Rue Plumet. Hopefully, Marius wouldn't get hurt while she was gone.
One hour later
Javert was just arriving back at the barricade with "details" about the National Guard's plan of attack.
"My friends, I've been to their lines. I have counted each man. Be warned, they've got armies to spare. Our danger is real."
"Have faith!" Enjolras reassured. "If we know their plans, we'll spoil their game. We shall overcome their power!"
"I have heard their plans. They will not attack tonight. They plan to wait until it's light. They're going to concentrate their force and hit us from the right."
"Liar!" called a small voice. Gavroche emerged out of nowhere. He had seen Javert earlier, and he knew that he was there to sabotage the boys. Gavroche wouldn't let that happen. "Hello, inspector. My friends, this man is Inspector Javert, and he's a spy for the guard!"
Javert tried to run, but he already had four men on him.
"Bravo, Gavroche!" praised Grantaire. He ruffled the little boy's hair.
"What shall we do with Monsieur l'Inspecteur Javert?" asked Courfeyrac.
"Take him and tie him in the wine shop," commanded Enjolras. "We'll take care of him later."
With Javert now tied up, everyone waited for the battle to begin. They didn't have to wait long though, for they could hear the marching of soldiers coming toward them.
Enjolras started barking orders. "Be ready! Don't fire right away! Save your gun powder!"
"Soon, the army was just 100 yards from the barricade. There, they stood, ready to fire.
The captain stepped forward and called, "Who's there?"
Enjolras knew that his answer would either instigate the revolution or stop the revolution. He replied, "French Revolution!"
"Fire!"
