Since Elena came into his and Spain's life, Chibi Romano has softened up a bit. In fact, he didn't mind having Elena as his new mother. It took four months after her and Spain's marriage, but he's gotten used to having her around. He sometimes called her 'mama', but he still stuck to 'Elena'. She always talked to him whenever he needed someone to talk to. She hasn't been as talkative about everything lately, though. She's been more tired and had this far away look in her eyes. Romano thought this as strange.
One day, Elena was sitting on the couch with a notepad in her hands. She was humming some kind of melody too. Chibi Romano came and sat next to her. He tried to figure out what she was writing, but he was still learning how to read and most of the words she wrote were Spanish. They looked like names. Romano raised an eyebrow.
"Hey, Elena. Why are you writing names,eh? Are you and that Spaniard planing a fiesta?" he asked. Elena didn't answer. In fact, it seemed as if she was ignoring him. She just continued humming. Romano frowned. He didn't like the fact that someone was ignoring him. Especially if it was Spain or a lady. Romano sighed and left her. He took a glance back to see if she noticed. She didn't!
It wasn't just Elena, Chibi Romano noticed that Spain was acting strange too. He kept spacing out whenever he was talking to Romano or doing the gardening. They both seem to be giving Romano less and less attention.
Spain was doing the dishes that afternoon and he started spacing out again. Looking up at noting in particular and he looked like he was thinking hard on something. He dried his hands and Chibi Romano walked in.
"Hey, Spaniard! I-" Romano began, but Spain walked right by him as if he didn't even know he was there! Romano glared as Spain sat down on a chair and took out a notepad. He was doing the same thing as Elena! Was he too small to see? Or was he just not there to them? He was writing names for reasons Romano didn't understand or know. At least he wasn't singing. Romano hated it when Spain sang. He always complained that Spain's singing sucked. Spain reached in his shirt and took out the wooden cross that hung around his neck and started fidgeting with it. Romano knew Spain usually did that when he was thinking about something.
"That stupido jerk is'a thinking about something. But why is'a he and Elena writing names, eh? Are they planing a'something? No wonder Spain needs to think really hard. He'a doesn't have a brain to begin with," Romano said to himself. He often wished he knew what went on in Spain's head, but he always claimed that his brain was the size of a pea. He wondered why Spain acted strange sometimes, but this was the worst.
Spain wrote a few names down, then stuck the wooden cross in his mouth. That was another sign Romano knew: If Spain sticks his wooden cross in his mouth, he's thinking very deeply on something. But what? Romano walked up to him.
"Hey, Spain!" he said. Spain didn't seem to notice or hear him. He looked up again for a moment, then went back to writing names. Romano glared and decided to speak louder. He didn't like it when someone wouldn't give him attention.
"HEY, SPAIN!" Romano screamed. Spain looked up around at the room and then noticed Romano. He smiled as if he was the same Spaniard as always and not like the strange Spain a moment ago.
"Oh, hi, Nino. What's up?"
"'What's up'e'? What's up'e with a'you and Elena? You'a keep ignoring me!" Romano pouted.
"Oh, sorry, Nino. I was thinking," Spain said, rubbing his head.
"About what, eh? Are you and Elena planing on having a fiesta? Without'a me?!" he asked, feeling angry. Spain smiled.
"Oh, no, Romano. Me and Elena are...well, planing."
"For what, eh?" Romano said, crossing his arms. There! It happened again! Spain was spacing out again. He smiled and started writing again.
"That's a good one!" he said out loud. Romano's mouth dropped open. Spain was ignoring him again! Romano sighed and gave up. He was sure Spain and Elena would tell him what all the fuss was about eventually, but it still bugged him. At least Spain said something to him, unlike what Elena did earlier.
At dinner, both Spain and Elena looked like they were open to society now. Romano decided to finally charge them now.
"So what's going on with you two, eh? Why are you two spacing out all the freaken time?" he asked. Elena was the first to look up two seconds before Spain.
"We've been spacing out? I'm sorry, Romano. I guess we have a lot on our minds," she said.
"With what, eh?" Romano said, crossing his arms. Spain and Elena stared at each other for a moment. Elena smiled and nodded to Spain as if giving him permission to tell Romano whatever it was they've been thinking about. Spain smiled and placed his hand over her's, then smiled at Romano.
"Well, Romano. The reason why me and Elena have been spacing out is because," he chuckled a little and didn't finish. Romano glared at him.
"What?! Tell me, darn it!"
"You're going to be a big brother, Nino!" Spain finally finished. Romano stared at him as if he processing in his mind what Spain just told him. His mouth hung open. Elena and Spain laughed at Romano's expression. Romano glared at them.
"I'ma already a big brother!" he said, thinking of his Northern half.
"Si," Elena smiled, "But you'll be one again."
"Si, dat's right! You'll be Big Brother Romano!" Spain said. Romano stood up, slamming his hands on the table.
"NO!" He shouted, "I"A DON"T WANT'E TO BE A BIG BROTHER!" then he jumped down from his chair and ran to is room. Spain stood up.
"Romano! Come back!" he called to him. Romano slammed the door closed. Spain and Elena stood there, feeling shocked and hurt.
"Maybe he just needs some time?" Elena tried to assure her husband. Spain shook his hand and sat back down. He ran his hand through his hair.
"I don't know. He sounded pretty angry. Maybe we should have waited until it was closer?" he said. Elena smiled and put her hand over his. Spain smiled and they leaned close and kissed.
Romano violently gripped his pillow. He was so angry.
"I'a should have never let Spain stick with her" he said, silently swearing. He buried his face in his pillow and started to cry.
"I'a hate'a this. Romano, you dastard! It'sa all because of you!"
