15. Smith And Jones

The gentle hum of the TARDIS engines were the background of the animated conversation the Doctor and Selene were having; they were talking about their most recent stop on a rather inhospitable alien planet. They had found themselves running from fazer blasts and hiding in cramped corners and empty rooms.

" Maybe you shouldn't have started talking to the guy who was clearly their most respected leader," Selene laughed, plopping down into the pilot's seat. The Doctor snorted and gave a Selene a look.

" And how did you figure out he was their most respected leader?" he asked with a chuckle. Selene crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow.

" He was sitting on dais and was wearing robes. Oh, and then there were all the people bowing down to him," she pointed out, voice slipping into a monotone at the end.

In a normal linear time frame, it had been a few months since saving Donna, and thus, a few months since Rose's departure. Things had cleared up well between the Time Lord and his companion, but the Doctor made sure to check in with Selene on the status of memory slips. Ever since they discovered that any further knowledge of what was on the TV show had been locked up, so to say, she'd remember bits and pieces—irrelevant bits and pieces that didn't make sense. Like people running or a scenic countryside with a scarecrow atop a hill. It was almost as if her mind was giving her sneak-peaks of what was to come… it was just horribly confusing.

The Doctor's brows furrowed as he thought about the man sitting on the dais…

" Well… ah… he—he did look rather… haughty, now that I think about it…" he muttered, leaning back against the console across from Selene. She smiled at him and rolled her eyes. The Doctor was glad everything had basically gone back to a level of happy familiarity; Selene smiled and laughed again and was no longer plagued by headaches or troubling 'premonitions' as Mickey probably would have said. But it been an unspoken agreement not to bring up Rose… guilty memories arose with that.

" A bit?" Selene laughed, tucking hair behind her ear. The Doctor, smiling again, glanced over at the monitor for a second but instead of looking away again, he froze. His smile fell and his face scrunched up in contemplation. " What is it?"

" It's… it's nothing, I'm sure but… the TARDIS had picked up high electricity levels around… uh… Royal Hope Hospital in London…" the Doctor muttered, flicking some switches to bring up what looked like security footage of the hospital. Selene arched a brow and stood up, pulling her ballet flats back on. She stood on her toes to look over the Doctor's shoulder.

" You mentioned that yesterday, too…" Selene pointed out, using his shoulder to steady herself whilst pulling on a shoe.

" It might just be some weird imbalance in the atmosphere…"

" Or it could not be that…"

" We should just keep on moving, it might not be anything…"

" But it could totally be something… its been building up for two days…"

There was a pause.

" We have to check it out."

OOOO

" Plasma coils?" the Doctor asked out loud, staring at said items that were lined up around the Royal Hope Hospital building. He was crouched down by one of them, tossing the Sonic gently from hand to hand. The air was thick with static electricity, which was proving rather annoying; accidentally brush hands with someone and—zap!

" Why are they just around the hospital?" Selene pondered, staring at the suspiciously familiar structure.

" Dunno…" he muttered, standing straight again, " but… what if whoever—whatever—put these coils down has plans for something inside…"

" Only one way to find out," Selene said nodding towards the hospital. The Doctor smiled at the way her face lit up with the possibility of a new adventure. He started towards the building and she snagged an arm through his, effectively turning him back around. " Whoa, there, Cowboy. You can't expect to just waltz into a hospital all willy-nilly and be able to walk around."

" What do you have in mind, then?" the Doctor asked.

" Patients usually get a good inside look."

" That's a valid point… well then, it looks like we have some acting ahead of us!" he announced with a grin.

" But I'll need to be closer to you in relation—they only allow next of kin and spouses to stay with patients," Selene pointed out.

" Right so you'll be my…" There was a pause as the two thought and then Selene said,

" Sister," while the Doctor said,

" Wife."

They stared at each other a moment, Selene's mouth hanging open a bit. Wife. A small shiver ran down her spin when he said that, but it wasn't all that unpleasant.

" I-I was going to say sister…" Selene said quietly, a blush rising to her cheeks.

" Wife is—is… it's fine," the Doctor stuttered out, the silence between them becoming awkward.

" Um, yeah… yeah, that makes more sense too; we don't really look alike and, ah, my accent."

" Right, right. Accent… So… you're my wife and I'm in… pain of some sort," the Doctor agreed on, running a hand through his hair a bit. Well, that certainly reminded them both of the slow dance they'd shared a few months back… But that was irrelevant—they had plasma coil placers to hunt down.

That was how the two soon found themselves stumbling into the hospital's emergency room. The Doctor had one long arm slung over Selene's shoulders and the other was wound around his abdomen. Every other step he took he'd stumble and his face was pulled into a very convincing look of complete pain. Selene, who was half-supporting the Time Lord, and an arm curled around his waist and the other gripped his free hand, which was dangling just over her shoulder.

" Excuse me, you have to help us," Selene pleaded to a nurse, who immediately rushed over.

" What's wrong?" the nurse asked, already pulling up a wheelchair.

" M-my husband, he—he says he's got this… this severe pain in his lower stomach. It's been happening for a few hours and… I'm just not sure what's happening," Selene told the nurse, stuttering on some words with a worried expression.

While the Doctor was wheeled off, Selene was instructed to go fill out paperwork before she could visit him. So, Psychic Paper in hand, Selene kept her worried façade in place and walked towards administration.

OOOO

Martha Jones had been having a weird morning.

First off, she'd had talked to every single member of her family—her sister, her mother, her father, her father's girlfriend and her brother. Secondly, she ran into two rather interesting characters on the street… they'd acted like they knew her, but she'd never seen them before in her life. Thirdly and finally, a man in completely black leather gear and a motorcycle helmet nearly knocked her over while entering the building, where the door handle had shocked her.

The one normal thing about her morning was that, after entering Royal Hope Hospital, Martha joined her fellow medical students and followed Mr. Stoker around the building. They'd already checked in on one patient, and were on their way to the next one. And, to Martha's complete surprise, it was the man and woman whom she ran into earlier that morning.

" Now then, Mr. Smith, a very good morning to you," Mr. Stoker said with a pleasant tone, " How are you today?"

The man, Mr. Smith, smiled a bit.

" Oh, not so bad. Still a bit, you know, blah," he told them, sticking his tongue out at the end. The woman in the chair beside his bed rolled her eyes and snickered a little. Martha had to admit the man was attractive, even in the hospital's striped pajamas. His hair was a tad messy and his brown eyes had a sparkle to them.

" John Smith, admitted yesterday by his wife here with severe abdominal pains," Stoker said, watching as the students took down some notes. Martha's eyes flickered over to the woman and thought, figures that a man like him would be married. And to a pretty woman like her too. Said woman had a hand resting on the edge of John's bed—Martha didn't spot a ring on her ring finger, but did see a gold thumb ring… maybe that was just an unorthodox wedding ring. " Jones, why don't you see what you can find? Amaze me." As Martha walked around the bed, she extracted the stethoscope from her pocket.

" That wasn't very clever, the two of you running around outside, was it?" Martha asked him, placing the stethoscope around her neck. Both John Smith and his wife looked at her a bit confused.

" Sorry?" he asked.

" On Chancellor Street this morning. You came up to me and took your tie off and your wife wrapped it 'round her head like a headband," Martha explained, glancing at the two.

" We did?" his wife asked quietly, a brow arching.

" What did we do that for?" he questioned, his brows furrowing.

" I don't know, you just did," Martha said, slowly beginning to put the stethoscope into her ears.

" Not us. I was here, in bed, Selene was sitting in the chair. Ask the nurses."

" Well, that's weird 'cause it looked like you two. Have you got a brother?"

" No, not anymore. Just me."

" As time passes and I grow ever more infirm and weary, Miss Jones…" Stoker interrupted, a forced calm present in his voice.

" Sorry," she apologized with a smile, " Right."

Martha placed the stethoscope on the left half of his chest, where his heart would be. She listened and heard something… off. There wasn't just one heartbeat… there were two. So, looking shocked and confused, she moved the stethoscope to the right half of his chest and listened again. There it was. Another heartbeat. It wasn't just the normal thud-thud she would usually hear, it was more of a thud-thud-thud-thud.

Looking up at John Smith, he wore a small smile and then he winked at her, clearly knowing what she'd heard. Glancing over at his wife, Selene, Martha noted she was smiling at her knowingly.

" I weep for future generations. Are you having trouble locating the heart, Miss Jones?" Stoker asked. Martha straightened up from her bent position over the bed, not breaking eye contact with John.

" Um… I don't know…" She laughed at herself, unsure of what to make of what just happened. Could she have imagined it? Could it have been some sort of prank? Best just to think on that later, she was trying to give a diagnosis… " Stomach cramps?"

" That is a symptom, not a diagnosis. And you rather failed basic techniques by not consulting first with the patient's chart." Stoker picked up the chart from the end of the bed. He touched the metal clip at the top and a visible arc of electricity zapped his hand. Stoker dropped the chart onto the foot of the bed, all of his students staring at him.

" That happened to me this morning," Martha admitted.

" I had the same thing on the door handle," said another student.

" And me, in the lift," said another.

" That's only to be expected. There's a thunderstorm moving in and lightning is a form of electricity, as was first proven by… anyone?" Stoker asked his students, peering at them.

" Benjamin Franklin," both the Doctor said in unison. They glanced at each other in surprise, having completely not planned it.

" Correct."

" My mate Ben—that was a day and a half! I got rope burns off that kite and then I got soaked," reminisced the Doctor, looking off. Selene laughed a bit and Stoker just stared at him and muttered,

" Quite."

" And then I got electrocuted!"

" That's why I stayed inside and away from metal," Selene told him with a roll of her eyes, " You didn't even drink the tea he made us."

" Moving on," Stoker said with a polite smile, beginning to step aside. He took the shoulder of one of the nurses. " I think perhaps a visit from psychiatric. Both of them."

The Doctor and Selene smiled at Martha as she followed her fellow students to the next patient. Selene remembered Martha—in fact, she could remember companions, a very significant River Song and a certain regeneration that said 'Geronimo!' It was odd. The whole 'locked up memories' situation was confusing, and Selene hated to think on it. But she really had to wonder if maybe it was like a healing wound—that her head was still adjusting to being cut off from the other universe that once it was fully adjusted, she'd remember everything…

" You had to go mention Ben," Selene playfully rebuked, smacking his chest with the back of her hand, " now they think we're both crazy."

" It's better than normal," he pointed out. She laughed and swept some hair out of her face.

" Normal is just a setting on the dryer, Doctor."

After the group of students and Mr. Stoker left, and the Doctor immediately swung his legs over the side of the bed. Selene took the blue dressing gown that was slung over the back of her chair and handed it to him, which he dawned and tied around his waist. He looked funny in it—it didn't quite fit him right and the sleeves were too long.

" Ready for some exploring?" he asked Selene with a smile, which she returned. She straightened out her denim button down and gave a nod, gesturing for him to lead the way. The slight playfulness of their exchange was quickly wiped away when they passed by a window; Selene grabbed the Doctor's elbow to force him to stop, staring at the rain outside… it was going up. It wasn't falling, it was rising.

A memory hit Selene smack in the face.

Rising rain, a flash of light and a crater where the hospital was supposed to be. Space rhinos in helmets… what were they called? Mandoon? Junedoom? Right! Judoon.

" Uh, Doctor, I think I need to tell you—" Selene began to say, but the Doctor's arm disappeared from her grasp.

" We have to find a bigger window…" he muttered, blocking out all outward elements that would disturb his thought process. They wove through the halls without conversation, trying not to alert anyone who would send the Doctor—a 'patient'—back to bed. They did have to sneak past a staff room, where Martha happened to be on the phone. Her brows furrowed when she saw the two, but said nothing of it, only watching as the two walked away.

As they rounded a corner, there was a flash of blinding white light that was accompanied by a loud crack of thunder. The entire building shook violently, sending the time travelers sprawling on the floor ungracefully. Selene grabbed onto the Doctor's hand as they tried to stay in one place for more than a couple seconds. They slid around on the floor, knocking into chairs and walls before suddenly… it all stopped. The two lay there for a moment before Selene shakily rose to her knees, grabbing a windowsill for support. But as she stood, she noticed what was outside; she'd seen that landscape before, it had been her first trip in the TARDIS…

They were on the moon.

" Yeah, it's coming back to me…" she muttered before turning to the Doctor, " I think its best you get your suit on."

OOOO

Martha had been weaving through masses of panicked patients and nurses, most of which were screaming and crying; she strode through one of the rooms, strongly saying,

" All right, now, everyone, back to bed. We've got an emergency, but we'll sort it out. Don't worry." Martha stopped at a set of windows and stared out at the moon landscape below them. An amazed smile cracked the calm countenance on her face. " It's real. It's really real!" Her voice was laced with what seemed to be shocked excitement. Something crossed her mind as she reached up towards a handle on the window. " Hold on…"

" Don't!" Swales, a fellow nurse, cried in a shaky voice. She grabbed onto Martha's wrists and shook her head. " We'll lose all the air."

" But, they're not exactly air tight. If the air was gonna get sucked out, it would have happened straightaway, but it didn't, so how come?" Martha asked, gesturing to the windows.

" Very good point!" the Doctor said, sweeping the curtain around his bed back. He no longer wore the hospital pajamas, but instead re-dawned his brand new suit. Both the suit jacket and trousers were a deep TARDIS blue with thin red pinstripes, with a burgundy tie knotted under the collar of a pale blue button down; he hadn't lost the Converse, but instead of plain canvas, they were a burgundy sort of red, just like his tie. The Doctor looked at pretty medical student and his brows furrowed. " Brilliant, in fact. What was your name?"

" Martha," she replied, smiling a bit.

" And it was… Jones, wasn't it? Well then, Martha Jones, the question is…"

" If the windows aren't air tight, how are we still breathing?" Selene asked, walking into the room. She had let the Doctor go ahead to change, but had gotten held up with all the panicked people rushing about—she swore she was almost knocked down a few times.

" We can't be," Swales said, beginning to cry. The Doctor rushed to the windows and began checking the seals.

" But, obviously, we are, so don't waste my time." He looked at Martha. " Martha, what have we got? Is there a balcony on this floor or a veranda or…"

" By the patients' lounge, yeah," she replied.

" Fancy going out?" he asked, straightening up.

" Yeah."

" But we could all die," Selene pointed out with a small smile. Martha looked at her and raised her brows.

" We might not."

A smile twitched up one half of the Time Lord's face.

" Good. Come on. Not her," the Doctor said, pointing at Swales, " she'd hold us up." Selene sent a glare at the Doctor and smacked his arm.

" Okay, you're being rude again," she said before turning to Swales and giving her a sweet smile, " Everything will be okay. Just make sure the patients stay calm, alright?"

The trio walked through the halls, avoiding patients and nurses alike, who were sitting on the floors, huddled against the walls; Martha marveled at how surprisingly calm the two Smiths were being; they hadn't broken down like close to everyone in the entirety of the hospital. In fact, they way they were walking and acting made it seemed like they dealt with things like hospitals being ripped into space everyday… but that would be completely insane.

When they arrived at a set of two glass doors that led out to a balcony, the three each pushed them open, cautiously stepping out. Then, after a moment, they all sucked in a deep breath. Martha stared out at the Earth in awe, gaping at its beauty and the fact she was alive and breathing.

" We've got air," she said breathily, " how does that work?" The three stepped up to the balcony edge, the Doctor in between both women.

" Count your blessings, Martha. Not many are always this lucky," Selene said with a fond laugh, leaning her forearms against the balcony. There was a brief moment of calm silence before Martha's voice broke it.

" I've got a party tonight. It's my brother's twenty-first. My mother's gonna be really—really…" Her voice was beginning to crack, and it had gone all soft.

" You okay?" the Doctor asked, looking down to her.

" Yeah."

" Sure?"

" Yeah."

" Wanna go back in?"

" No way," Martha laughed, " I mean, we could die any minute, but all the same—it's beautiful."

" Do you think?" the Time Lord asked, his hands clasped behind his back. He looked at the Earth in the distance, remembering the last time he was on the Moon. It had been Selene's first trip in the TARDIS; she'd been grinning and leaning in the doorway of the time machine, the Earthlight glowing on her face.

" How many people want to go to the moon? And here we are!"

" Standing in the Earthlight."

" It really is a feeling like no other…" Selene said quietly. The Doctor smiled a bit at her and mimicked the way she leaned against the balcony. Martha looked at the 'Joneses' and asked,

" What do you think happened?" The Doctor looked over at her and blinked a few times.

" What do you think?"

" Extraterrestrial. It's got to be. I don't know. A few years ago that would have sounded mad, but these days? That spaceship flying into Big Ben, Christmas, those Cybermen things." Martha let out a little sigh. " I had a cousin—Adeola. She worked at Canary Wharf. She never came home…"

" We're sorry…" the Doctor said softly, the two remembering the woman, who looked shockingly like Martha.

Same actress… Selene thought distantly, staring back out at her home planet.

" Yeah…"

" We were there. In the battle, it was…" the Doctor's voice trailed off and Selene felt her shoulders hunch slightly. Guilt rose up in her throat and a cold chill ran down her spine, which made her look away from the two next to her. It was always going to be a touchy subject for her, for the rest of her life; the memories of that day haunted her and she wished she could just lock them up in a safe and forget about them forever.

A warm arm stretched over her shoulders, and an equally warm hand rested upon her upper arm. The Doctor was looking down at her, the saddened look in his eyes telling her that he knew her thought process. She gave a tiny smile and leaned into his side, violently pushing the thoughts back to the dark corner they resided in. Martha sucked in a breath and let it out.

" I promise you, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, we will find a way out," she told the two, a confident tone leaking into her voice, " If we can travel to the moon, then we can travel back. There's got to be a way."

" It's not 'Smith,'" the Doctor said straightening up and heading across the balcony, " that's not my real name."

" And my last name is actually Thomas… And we're not actually married," Selene added in, tugging the cuffs of her shirt back up to her elbows. Martha raised an eyebrow and looked at the two in confusion.

" Who are you, then?"

" Selene Thomas."

" I'm the Doctor."

" Me too, if I ever pass my exams!" She laughed and shrugged. " What is it, then, Doctor Smith?"

" Just 'the Doctor.'"

" How do you mean, just 'the Doctor'?" Martha gave him a look that said 'you're pulling my leg, yeah?'

" Just… 'the Doctor,'" he said, wondering if he'd said something wrong to confuse her.

" What, people call you 'the Doctor'?" she asked doubtfully, tilting her head. Selene raised a hand then pointed her thumb at the blue suited man.

" Yup. He's the Doctor, I barely call him anything else," she told Martha with a genuinely truthful voice.

" Well, I'm not gonna. As far as I'm concerned, you've got to earn that title."

" Well, I better make a start then. Let's have a look!"

The Doctor picked up a small pebble and tossed it out into the distance.

" There must be some sort of…" The pebble smacked into something, which let out a crackle of energy and a ripple of visible static electricity. " …Forcefield… keeping the air in…"

" But… if that's like a bubble sealing us in, that means this is the only air we've got. What happens when it runs out?" Martha asked, piecing everything together rather well.

" How many people in this hospital?"

" Dunno. A thousand?"

" Then a thousand people are gonna suffocate," Selene said grimly.

" Why would anyone do that?!"

From above, a loud whooshing could be heard, and looking up, the Doctor said,

" Heads up. Ask them yourself."

Three, massive, circular space ships slowly descended to land in front of the hospital. They were hulking machines made of grey metal and whatever was inside, couldn't be friendly. Once landing, walkways lowered onto the surface of the moon, where rows of tiny looking figures began marching out.

" Aliens…" Martha said, eyes growing wide. " That's aliens. Real, proper aliens!"

" Judoon," the Doctor said with a hard edge in his voice. Selene sighed and ran her hands through her hair.

" I tried to tell you…" she muttered as she crossed her arms. The Doctor looked over at her and his eyebrows scrunched together.

" Did you?" he asked in confusion.

" Yes! While we were sneaking through the hospital, I had a memory slip and remembered the Judoon. I tried to tell you, but you were more focused on finding a window," Selene deadpanned. The Doctor scratched the back of his head and cleared his throat awkwardly. He'd been the one who insisted Selene should let him know if she gained any important memory back, but clearly that had slipped his mind.

" Oh, yes, sorry 'bout that…" he murmured, avoiding eye contact for a second. Rolling her eyes, Selene patted him on the shoulder and then smiled.

" Just try to remember to keep your ears open and perceptive, just like your eyes always are."

" Sorry, but, the… Judoon, I think you said… they are aliens, yeah?" Martha asked, interrupting their moment.

" Very much so," Selene replied, scrubbing a hand through her hair. The medical student nodded and watched as the Judoon figures got closer and closer to the hospital.

" Well, standing out here isn't going to do much good; since they have the good nature to use the front doors, why don't we go see why they've taken the hospital to the moon," the Doctor said, nodding back to the glass doors.

OOOO

By the time the Judoon marched through the forcefield around the hospital and into the hospital, those in the lobby scattered and crouched behind and against chairs and desks. The Judoon filled the room and towered over the cowering patients and employees. One of them removed its bulky black helmet, revealing its face; the only best way of describing the Judoon were grumpy, walking space rhinos.

" Bo! Sco! Fo! Do! No! Kro! Blo! Co! Sho! Ro!" the Judoon captain uttered in its gravely voice. It seemed to be a command to draw weapons, which was exactly what all the other Judoon did; they whipped out their guns and held them at the ready. While a nervous murmur echoed out across all the humans in the room, a brace male medical student by the last name of Morgenstern stepped forward.

" Um, we are citizens of planet Earth. We welcome you in peace," Morgenstern said calmly. The Judoon captain turned to him and pushed him against the wall with a gloved hand, a rumbling noise echoing in its throat. With the other hand, the alien held up a small device to Morgenstern's mouth. " P-p-please don't hurt me. I was just trying to help. I-I'm sorry. Don't hurt me. P-please don't hurt me."

Pulling the device away from the shaken medical student, the Judoon captain hit a button, and it replayed Morgenstern's words; it had been a recording device. It then clicked the item into a circular plug into its suit.

" Language assimilated. Designation—Earth English. You will be cataloged," the captain said, voice low and unbelievably rough. Another device was lifted up to Morgenstern, a blue light shining onto his forehead. It made a sound for a second, but did nothing to harm him. " Category—human." A black 'X' was drawn in marker on the back of his hand. " Catalog all suspects."

Selene, Martha and the Doctor, on a second floor balcony hidden behind some potted plants, watched as the Judoon went around and scanned all of the people in the lobby below. Selene had always thought that Morgenstern would make a great intergalactic ambassador for Earth; he stayed calm and collected, even while staring into the wrinkled, dry face of a space rhino. The Doctor, seemingly ignoring the occurrences happening, smiled and said,

" Oh, look down there, you got a little shop. I like a little shop." Selene smacked his arm with the back of her hand, her thumb ring hitting the bone of his elbow.

" Is that really a necessary thought right now?" she whispered.

" I have a necessary thought for you both; what are Judoon?" Martha interjected, hoping to stop the two from going on another small banter like earlier.

" They're like police. Well, police for hire. They're more like interplanetary thugs," the Doctor explained, pushing one of the plant's fronds from his line of sight. Selene bit the inside of her cheek for a moment, thinking about the Doctor's last comment.

" Think of those really burly guys in action movies; you know, the ones that wear all black and sunglasses indoors," she said. Martha nodded at the analogy and watched as more black 'X's were drawn.

" And they brought us to the moon?"

" Neutral territory. According to Galactic Law, they've got no jurisdiction over the Earth, so they isolated it. That rain, lightning? That was them using an H2O Scoop." The Doctor's words were quick. He really knew what he was talking about—it was almost as if the three were discussing basic traffic laws over a cup of coffee. Selene was impressed he recalled all of that in the short moments they took to travel from the balcony to their current spot. A smile pulled at Martha's lips.

" What are you on about, Galactic Law? Where'd you get that from?" she asked. Looking towards the mysterious man, she noted that the other two had moved around the plants to crouch down on the other side of the plants, which allowed them a better vantage point. She quickly followed and peered over the top of the wooden railing, while Selene and the Doctor stared through some glass. " If they're police, are we under arrest? Are we… trespassing on the moon or something?"

" No, but I like that. Good thinking. No, I wish it were that simple. They're making a catalog. That means they're after something non-human, which is very bad news for us."

Selene's head whipped towards the Doctor and her brows furrowed at what he'd just said. 'Us'? Bad news for 'us'?

" Why?"

The Doctor leveled a look at Martha that almost said 'do you really need to ask?' She shot a look back.

" Oh, you're kidding me." He arched a brow. " Don't be ridiculous." No change in expression. Martha's face dropped. " Stop looking at me like that."

" Come on then," he whispered, beginning to walk back the way the came. Selene quickly rushed after him, taking a few leaps to catch pace.

" What did you mean by 'bad news for us'? I mean, I'm human, they wouldn't have anything against me," Selene told him, wondering if maybe he'd bonked his head earlier. The Doctor's face scrunched up a bit as if he were thinking over what to say.

" Well, you may be human, but you're not a human from this dimension or… universe, take your pick of word. You've been through the Void at least twice, so you've got all the Void Stuff stuck to you; don't you think that would be a tad suspicious? It would definitely register on their scans, and you wouldn't be happy with what they'd have in store for you," the Doctor explained as he leaned in one room and spotted what he needed—a computer. As he sprinted towards it, Selene stared wide-eyed at his blue suit jacketed back. A cold flush of worry ran through her body.

" Well… that is just… wonderful," she said finally entering the room after him.

" Definitely… now, lets see about this computer." The Doctor sat himself in a desk chair and began hitting keys and pressing 'On' buttons; it wasn't wanting to turn on. Martha, stepping over a few fallen pieces of medical equipment, glanced around nervously. The room wasn't exactly sealed up tight—the doors swung open and closed and didn't lock.

" Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked after a quiet moment. Selene turned towards Martha and thought the question over, seeing as the Doctor was busy with wires and computer issues. Biting her lip, she thought it over for one more moment before a look brightened her face.

" Yeah, could you maybe go see what floor the Judoon have gotten to? Just a quick glance through a window will do. If you get in trouble, shout for one of us and we'll come running," Selene instructed, nodding back to the door.

" Yeah, I think I can do that," Martha replied, heading back out the double doors. Selene blew out a breath and turned around, promptly tripping over a fallen I.V. pole. At the loud clatter and a bit of swearing, the Doctor looked over at her and arched an eyebrow.

" Be careful, the last thing we need is you with an injured ankle," he told her before turning back to the computer. With a frustrated grunt he smacked the side of the computer, which still refused to turn on. " Something is wrong with this!"

" Did you try using the Sonic?" Selene asked, fixing the laces of her boots. The Time Lord didn't reply, but he removed the Sonic from his inner jacket pocket, and began to focus on turning on the computer again.

Selene sat on the edge of the desk he was sitting at, arms crossed, watching what he was doing. His face was contorted in a look of intense concentration; his brows were furrowed, his lips were pressed together and his warm brown eyes flicked around the monitor, watching blank files flicker quickly over the screen. Ever since her not so surprising revelation on her feelings towards him, Selene found herself watching him a lot more: observing the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled, watching as his lips curved in the process of smiling or smirking, the way he leapt and bounded around the console with an immeasurable amount of excitement… and some part of her head told her to stop, that it was killing her inside watching how amazing he was; the Doctor would always love Rose—not her. But when did she start listening to that stupid little voice in her head? She could dream, right? Besides, it always gave her something to smile about.

The Doctor glanced up at Selene, briefly noting that she was watching him use the Sonic on various parts of the computer. He loved how their relationship had gone back to normal; no more fighting—not counting the playful banters they loved to launch into—and very little mistrust. Of course, he wondered every so often if she were keeping something from him. But, as she'd requested, they had little heart-to-hearts or personal conversations if anything was bothering either one of them. Selene did tell him if a memory slipped through, though they never really made any sense. But pushing that aside, it was good to have a lightened mood filling the TARDIS again; each adventure usually ended up being a surprise, and he never got tired of seeing the awe that crossed Selene's face or stayed in her blue eyes as she saw something new.

" They've reached the third floor," Martha announced as she stepped back into the room. She stepped over all the fallen equipment in order to make her way over to the two other people in the room who were not married; she had to admit, something akin to… relief seemed to have washed through her as Selene uttered that they weren't married. Martha supposed she should berate herself because of that, but, really, who could blame her? The man in the blue suit was really attractive. Then, she noticed something… weird. The Doctor was holding a silvery grey device that lit up blue on the end, and emitted a strange whirring, pulsating sound. " What's that?"

" Sonic Screwdriver," he replied. Martha's brows furrowed.

" Well, if you're not going to answer me properly…"

" He did; that's what it is, a Sonic Screwdriver," Selene told her casually.

" It's a screwdriver and it's sonic. Look." The Doctor held it up to her so she could see before turning back to the computer.

" What else have you got, a laser spanner?" Martha laughed, watching as he tried to Sonic the computer more.

" I did, but it was stolen by Emily Pankhurst—cheeky woman. What's wrong with this computer!?" he yelled in frustration, smacking it twice with his hand. " The Judoon must have locked it down. Judoon platoon upon the moon…" He rubbed his chin with a small sigh. " 'Cause we were just traveling past." The Doctor ran his fingers through his hair, messing it so that it was sticking up crazily. " I swear, we were just wandering… We weren't looking for trouble. Honestly, we weren't. But I noticed these plasma coils around the hospital." He turned to Martha and said, " That lightning—that's plasma coils. Been building up for two days now, so we checked in. I thought something was going on inside. It turns out the plasma coils were the Judoon up above."

" But… what are they looking for?" Martha asked. It was surprisingly easy to accept his explanation; then again, they were on the moon, so anything could be possible…

" Something that looks human but isn't." He began to type furiously, hoping to pull up any of the hidden files.

" Like you two apparently."

" Like him, actually. All human," Selene interjected, gesturing to herself, " I promise."

" Like me. But not me," the Doctor agreed. Martha thought for a brief moment; if the Judoon were like intergalactic police—or thugs—they'd have to have some idea of what they were looking for appeared like, right?

" Haven't they got a photo?" she asked. The Doctor tilted his head and scrunched his face up a bit.

" Ah, might be a shape changer…

" Whatever it is, can't you just leave the Judoon to find it?"

" If they declare the hospital guilty of harboring a fugitive, they'll sentence it to execution."

" All of us?" Martha asked in disbelief.

" Oh, yes, but if I can find this thing first—oh!" the Doctor shouted suddenly, lurching back in his seat. The exclamation made both women look at him oddly. " Do you see? They're thick! Judoon are thick. They are so completely thick! They've wiped the records! Oh, that's clever." Once again, he pushed one hand into his hair, which was soon joined by the other, ruffling up the already messy strands of hair.

" And let me guess, there's no way of getting them back?" Selene asked. The Doctor sent a look at her, which made her nod. " Yeah, that's what I thought…"

" What are we looking for?" Martha decided to ask, nervously rubbing the side of her neck.

" I don't know… say, any patient admitted in the past week with unusual symptoms." His hands dropped away from his head-leaving his crazy brown locks sticking up this way and that, curved to the side and staying like that-allowing him to pick up the computer. " Maybe there's a back up! Selene, can you start looking around for… for… oh, I don't know, a second hard-drive?"

" Sure thing," she replied, hopping off the desk and beginning to sift through drawers.

" Just keep working. I'll go and ask Mr. Stoker. He might know," Martha said, sending odd glances at the crazy haired man and the woman at his side as she left.

The Doctor began to Sonic the back of the computer monitor as Selene pushed aside paperclips, binder clips, pens, pencils and administration forms. When her search revealed nothing and a quick sweep of the room did the same, she sighed. Glancing back at the Doctor, a smile pulled on her lips. He looked absolutely mad; his face was super concentrated, he was hugging the monitor to his chest and using the Sonic Screwdriver on different plugs. In the seriousness of the moment, she laughed a bit, catching the Time Lord's attention. He arched his brows and looked at her with an innocent face.

" What is it?" he asked.

" Your, uh, hair is a bit…" She snickered again and then grabbed a small wall mirror that had crashed to the floor. Smiling, she held the small mirror up in front of him so he could see his hair. His eyes widened slightly.

" Oh. That's a bit… messy…" The computer beeped. Scrambling to put the monitor back on the table, the Doctor grinned. " Oh, yes! Ah, the back up is restored! We should go fetch Martha, there's no need for her to talk to that Stoker fellow now." The Doctor stood and pocketed the Sonic once more. Selene smirked and set the mirror down.

" Um, first you might want to fix your hair."

" Right, right, yes, good point," the Doctor agreed, quickly running his fingers through his hair. After a moment or two of careful finger and hand movements, his hair was mostly back to its proper look. " Better?"

" Just about, maybe just a little bit of… um… oh, screw it," she muttered. Reaching up, Selene carefully ran her fingers through the front of his hair so it flopped to his right like it usually did. She took the time as she straightened out a particularly unruly strand to notice just how soft his hair actually was. " There. All better." She smiled brightly up at him and then turned to step over the fallen I.V. pole. After a pause, the Doctor followed suit, combing his fingers through the back of his hair. That last little moment had been a bit sudden, a bit surprising… but it was nice.

The halls were pull of patients who were now nervously milling around because the Judoon were getting closer and closer. The Doctor and Selene were a contrast to all the people there—while they were both inwardly nervous, outwardly they were exuding a calm that no one else was showing. The only problem they had was that they had no idea where Mr. Stoker's office was; they only knew that it was on that floor somewhere. So, when the rounded the tenth corner, they were surprised to have Martha barrel into the Doctor's arms. He rested his hands on her shoulder blades and announced,

" I've restored the back-up."

" I found her," Martha said in a panicked voice. Selene's eyebrows shot up.

" You what?"

A door was suddenly ripped off its hinges and a man in all leather and a motorcycle helmet began to lumber towards them. The Doctor's hand found Martha's and gripped it tightly.

" Run!" he shouted, Selene following behind them, since the hall didn't accommodate three people across. The Doctor leapt over fallen pieces of equipment, his long legs making it look effortless. Now, as they ran away from what was known as a Slab, the outward calm he and Selene had been wearing was wiped away, replaced by that nervous but excited look caused by running.

The trio tore down a staircase, the Slab on their heels. But as they turned to go down to the third floor, a row of Judoon was marching up.

" Down the hall, down the hall!" Selene shouted, pushing the two in front of her down the first fourth floor hallway. The Slab had been too close to her for her liking—she could hear the squeak and groan of leather as they bounded down the steps. The fourth floor was completely empty, leaving them to run without having to avoid troublesome obstacles or huddled up people. The Doctor would take the lead every now and then, pushing the women down a particular hall that he thought best. Selene and Martha were trying to catch their breath while keeping good speed; they'd been running for a good few minutes and the added adrenaline didn't seem to help. Unfortunately, the Slab seemed to be the best at keeping a constant pace because it was always only a few feet behind. In fact, as the Doctor pushed Martha and Selene into radiology room, the Slab almost got a hold of him. The Time Lord slammed the door shut and then Sonicked the lock.

" What now?" Selene asked, catching her breath. The Doctor took her shoulders and nodded for Martha to follow. He led them behind a partition, which was a radiation screen.

" When I say 'now,' press the button, he instructed, heading towards the x-ray machine.

" Gee, that would be really straightforward if there weren't over two buttons to press!" Selene shot back as she stared down at the control panel. The Doctor gave her a look; she tended to get snappy while under pressure.

" Then find out which one!"
" There should be a manual around, yeah?" Selene asked, voice quavering. Martha's eyes brightened as she spotted one and tried to snatched it up, trying to flip through it. Meanwhile, the Doctor was using the Sonic on the x-ray machine, eventually jamming it into a plug and the Slab was dangerously close to busting the hinges on the wooden door. The Doctor aimed the x-ray at the door while both woman worked together by flipping through pages. Unfortunately, their time was up when the Slab began to march into the room once the door was downed.

" Now!" the Doctor shouted. Giving up, Martha hit a yellow button and, thankfully, it seemed to be the right one. Everyone squinted as a bright white light filled the room accompanied with a buzzing. The Slab convulsed a bit and then fell face first to the floor, as if someone had smacked it from behind. The light disappeared as Martha lifted her hand, and everyone, with their hearts still racing, stared down at the Slab, who was stiff as a board.

" What did you do?" Martha asked with amazement.

" Increased the radiation by five thousand percent. Killed him dead," the Doctor explained.

" But isn't that gonna kill you?" The Doctor seemed to scoff a bit and he shook his head.

" Nah, it's only roentgen radiation. We used to play with roentgen bricks in the nursery. It's safe for you two to come out, I've absorbed it all." As the two women stepped out, Martha looked at Selene a questioning look in her eyes.

" Just roll with it," Selene said as they stepped out and faced the Doctor, who was beginning to shake out his shoulders and bounce on the balls of his feet.

" All I have to do is expel it. Mm, if I concentrate… shift the radiation out of my body and into one spot…" He began jumping up and down a bit more, then he stared at his feet. " It's in my left shoe. Here we go, here we go. Easy does it." He began jumping on his right foot, arms out for balance, face screwed up in concentration and a bit of discomfort, his left foot wobbling about. He kicked it twice while saying, " Out, out!" He began to travel sideways across the room, making Selene begin to giggle into her hand. " Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ah! Ah, ah, ah, ah! Itches, itches itches, itches, oh! Ah, hold on!" He pulled off his left Converse and then turned to a bright yellow hazardous materials bin, and tossed it inside, letting the lid slam shut. He turned to the two women. " Done."

" You're completely mad," Martha told him, having watched the spectacle with complete confusion. The Doctor shared a look with Selene, who was still laughing quietly into her hand.

" You're right," he admitted quietly, one brow arched a bit, " I look daft in one shoe." So, removing the other, it joined its partner in the yellow bin. " Barefoot on the moon!"

" Do you really not wear socks?" Selene asked with a smile. The Doctor shrugged and smiled at her.

" They're not completely necessary."

" Completely agree," she said with a grin. Martha gave them both looks. So they were both mad…

" So, what is that thing, and where's it from—planet Zovirax?" Martha asked, changing the subject as she was the first to crouch by the fallen creature.

" It's just a Slab," the Doctor said dismissively, crouching down across from Martha. " They're called Slabs. Basic slave drones, see? Solid leather, all the way through. Someone has got one hell of a fetish." He stood and went over to the x-ray to grab his Sonic, frowning at what he saw.

" It was that woman, Miss Finnegan. It was working for her, just like a servant."

" My Sonic Screwdriver…" he muttered sadly, his eyebrows pulling together. The tip and end were burnt up, having been fried from the radiation. He held it gingerly in his fingers, as if it may crumble any second, which was very plausible.

" She was one of the patients, but—" Martha tried to say again, but was interrupted by the Time Lord.

" Burnt out my Sonic Screwdriver!" His voice sounded forlorn, like a put out child. Selene groaned and pinched the bridge of her nose.

" She had this straw, like some sort of vampire!"

" I love my Sonic Screwdriver!"

" Doctor!"

" Sorry." He turned to face Martha, tossing his Sonic to the side. Sighing, Selene picked it up and pocketed it—that wasn't the sort of thing you just left lying around, she thought he would have figured that… a sudden smile spread over the man's face. " You called me Doctor!"

" That really doesn't matter! Didn't you hear what she was saying?" Selene asked.

" Anyway, Miss Finnegan is the alien. She was drinking Mr. Stoker's blood."

A thoughtful look crossed the Doctor's face.

" Funny time to take a snack. You'd think she'd be hiding. Unless—no. Yes, that's it! Wait a minute…" A pause before he shouted, " Yes! Shape-changer! Internal shape-changer! She wasn't drinking blood she was assimilating it! If she can assimilate Mr. Stoker's blood, mimic the biology, she'll register as human. We've got to find her and show the Judoon. Come on!"

OOOO

The three had almost made it off the fourth floor without trouble—that is, till they spotted a second Slab. They ducked down by a water cooler, huddling against a wooden door stuck in a shallow alcove. The Slab marched past, steps echoing down the linoleum tiled floors.

" That's the thing about slabs—they always travel in pairs," the Doctor muttered.

" What about you?" Martha whispered.

" What about me, what?"

" Do you always have back up? Is Selene always with you?" Martha asked, looking over her shoulder. The Doctor scoffed and looked at her.

" Humans. We're stuck on the moon, running out of air, with Judoon and a bloodsucking criminal. You're asking personal questions?" That earned a right good slap to the back of his head from Selene.

" First off, you're being rude. Again. Secondly, don't insult humans, you know you love us," Selene hissed, before standing straight, " Come on, the Slab must be gone by now…"

" I like that. 'Humans.' I'm still not convinced he's an alien," Martha deadpanned as they rounded a corner.

A blue light appeared on the Doctor's face.

" Non-human," growled a Judoon, who'd been around the corner. Martha's eyes widened.

" Oh, my God, you really are!"

" And again!"

They took off running down the hall, this time barely rounding a corner before the Judoon fired lasers at them, which left three charred holes in the drywall. After navigating their way back to the stairs, they jogged up to the seventh floor, locking the stairway door behind them.

In the corridor, people were slumping down the walls, tiredly resting with labored breathing. The air was getting thinner and thinner, making everyone lightheaded and feeling lethargic.

" I think they've already done this floor," Selene said as they dodged a fallen light.

" Come on. The Judoon are logical and just a little bit thick. They won't go back to check a floor they've checked already," the Doctor explained, " If we're lucky."

They paused by Swales, the other medical student from earlier, who was placing an oxygen mask over a patient's mouth.

" How much oxygen is there?" Martha asked.

" Not enough for all these people. We're going to run out," Swales replied quietly.

" How are you feeling, you alright?" the Doctor suddenly asked Martha.

" I'm running on adrenaline," she replied. He looked at Selene.

" Welcome to our world."

" What about the Judoon?"

" Nah, great big lung reserves. It won't slow them down. Where's Mr. Stoker's office?"

" It's this way." She pointed around a corner, where they slowly began to enter, the Doctor walking in first.

Stoker's office was completely empty, exempting his lifeless body on the linoleum floor.

" She's gone, she was here," Martha promised as they jogged in and over to Stoker's body, which lay behind his desk. His eyes were glassy and open and skin was stark white, which was rather frightening.

" Drained him dry… Every last drop. I was right—she's a plasmavore," the Doctor muttered.

" What's she doing on Earth?"

" Hiding. On the run. Like Ronald Biggs in Rio de Janeiro. What's she doing now? She's still not safe? The Judoon could execute us all. Come on." The Doctor headed towards the door, only stopped by Martha saying,

" Wait a minute."

She walked over to Mr. Stoker, leaned down, and then shut his eyes respectfully. Selene rubbed her back comfortingly as they stepped back into the hallway.

" I'm sorry," she said softly. Martha gave her an appreciative smile.

" Think, think, think. If I was a wanted plasmavore surrounded by police, what would I do?" the Doctor asked rhetorically, running a hand through his hair again. He eyed a sign that read MRI. " Oh, she's as clever as me… Almost."

BANG.

" Find the nonhuman. Execute," a Judoon proclaimed as a small squad of them came onto the floor, beginning to recheck people. The Doctor quickly turned to Martha.

" Martha, stay here, we need time. You've got to hold them up," he told her.

" How do I do that?" she asked with a panicked and nervous tone. What was she supposed to do? Stall them by angering them?

" Just—forgive me for this. It could save a thousand lives. It means nothing." She nodded. He glanced at Selene briefly from the corner of his eye, something she didn't notice. " Honestly nothing."

The Doctor took Martha's face in his hands and then kissed her for a minute. When he pulled away, he grabbed Selene's hand and took off down the hall. Martha stood there a moment with her eyes closed, a small smile on her face. Now she was definitely glad he wasn't married. As her brown eyes flicked open she sighed and whispered,

" That was nothing?"

OOOO

The Doctor and Selene, ever the duo, ran down the halls towards the MRI room, following the flashes of light. Selene glanced at the Doctor and then watched where she was running. She would admit that the kiss he'd given Martha, yeah, it made her feel a bit jealous, but she couldn't afford to think like that at a time like this, at a time where people were dying…

The Doctor halted her as they stopped in front of the MRI room. He looked down at her and wound an arm around her waist.

" Just play along, Mrs. Smith," he told her quietly before pushing the door open. As they walked in, both winced at a bright flash of light the MRI machine gave off; electricity was dancing across its surface, and, lo and behold, Miss Finnegan was at the controls, behind the radiation screen.

" Have you seen? There are these things!" the Doctor suddenly exclaimed, his voice rising to higher pitches at some spots. He had his right arm flung out to point at the door, and the other was holding Selene protectively to his side. " These great big… space rhino things! I mean, rhinos from space!"

" And, if you can possibly believe it… the moon! That's what we're on right now! We're on the moon with great big ol' space rhinos!" Selene added on with wide eyes, gripping onto the front of the Doctor's suit jacket.

" With guns!" he squeaked, looking down at her.

" That too! Great, big space rhinos with guns on the moon!"

" I only came in for my bunions. Look!" The Doctor released Selene in order to hold up his bare foot to stare at the bottom of it. " All fixed now. Perfectly good treatment."

" And what a relief too! His feet have been killing him for ages," Selene said, rubbing the Doctor's shoulder.

" The nurses were lovely. I said to my wife—" He wrapped an arm around Selene's shoulders again. " I said, I'd recommend this place to anyone. But then we end up on the moon! And… Did we mention the rhinos?"

Miss Finnegan stared at them for a moment. Which one would be more trouble, which one, which one… she eyed the woman and said,

" Hold her."

A slab marched forward and grabbed a hold of Selene, who squeaked as her arms were squished forcefully at her side.

" Oi, that hurt a bit!" she said with a wince. The Doctor stared at her wide-eyed for a moment before flinching at the bright light the MRI machine let off. Miss Finnegan stepped over to it and peered inside as electricity sparked in the circular opening.

" Um that—that big, um, machine thing, is it supposed to be making that noise?" the Doctor asked, nervously glancing at Selene, who's nervousness was now very, very real.

" You wouldn't understand," the older woman said, waving a hand at him.

" But isn't that a-a magnetic resonance imaging thing? Like a-a ginormous sort of magnet? I did magnetic GCSE. Well, I failed, but all the same," the Doctor said dismissively.

" The magnetic setting now increased to fifty thousand Tesla."

" That—that sounds rather high and rather dangerous," Selene said, watching as the white light tinged purple.

" It'll send out a magnetic pulse that'll fry the brain stems of every living thing within two-hundred fifty thousand miles," Miss Finnegan announced with a smile, the light dancing evilly in her eyes. She smiled at the two people in the room. " Except me, safe in this room."

" But, um—hold on, hold on. I did—I did geography GCSE. I passed that one. Doesn't that distance include the Earth?" the Doctor asked, face scrunching together with worry.

" Only the side facing the moon. The other half will survive. Call it my little gift."

" Sorry, you'll have to excuse me, I'm a little out of depth. I've spent the past fifteen years working as a postman, hence the bunions. Why would you do that?"

" With everyone dead, the Judoon ships will be mine to make my escape!" Miss Finnegan explained, still smiling as she continued to hit buttons. The Doctor snorted with a smile and looked at Selene then the older woman.

" No, that's weird. You're talking like you're some sort of an alien. Isn't she talking like that, sweetheart?" he asked Selene, smiling. She nodded.

" Yeah, like, uh, like in that movie—The Men In Black—when all the aliens are on Earth. But you can't be an alien," Selene said, shaking her head.

" Quite so," Miss Finnegan replied with a slight smirk. The Doctor let his face fall.

" No!"

" Oh, yes."
" You're joshing me!"

" I am not."

" I'm talking to an alien? In a hospital? What, has this place got an E.T. Department?" he joked, smiling at Selene, who rolled her eyes.

" It's the perfect hiding place. Blood banks downstairs for a midnight feast and all this equipment ready to arm myself with should the police come looking" she elaborated, walking to stand in front of the two. The Doctor and Selene widened their eyes at her words.

" So, those rhinos, they're looking for you?" the Doctor asked with surprise.

" Yes. But I'm…" She stepped closer and showed him the black X on her hand. " Hidden."

" Oh. Right. Maybe that's why they're increasing their scans."

" They're doing what?"

" Hm, ah, big chief rhino boy, he said, 'no sign of a nonhuman. We must increase our scans up to setting 2'?"

" Yeah, he sounded a bit put off about it—I think that maybe they just wanted a quick search you know? In, out, done and over with," Selene told her shifting again in the Slab's grip.

" Then I must assimilate again…" Miss Finnegan muttered, staring at the floor.

" What does that mean?" the Doctor asked.

" I must appear to be human." She made her way towards the radiation screen, reaching down to retrieve something.

" Well, you're welcome to come home with me and the wife."

" I'd be honored," Selene put in with a smile.

" We can have cake!" the Doctor announced with a bright, convincing grin.

" Why should I have cake? I've got my little straw!" Miss Finnegan said happily, removing a bendy straw from her purse. Selene's smile faltered around the edges. Yeah, memories were coming back now, that straw was bad news… but she forced the smile to stay, not betraying any emotion.

" Oh, that's nice. Milkshake? I like banana," the Doctor said, voice quavering slightly as the older woman began to approach Selene.

" He likes banana, I like chocolate, when we have to choose deserts its almost a food battle to see who'll win—he usually does, I give in to things way too easily," Selene said with a laugh, not liking how the situation was turning.

" You're quite the funny couple. And yet, I think, laughing on purpose at the darkness. I think it's time you found some peace. Steady her," Miss Finnegan ordered.

Suddenly, the Slab shoved Selene downward, which resulted with her kneeling on the floor. One hand shoved her head to the side, exposing the pale skin of her neck. Selene yelled out in pain at the sudden shove, wincing in pain. Miss Finnegan came towards her with a little smile, the innocent looking straw between her fingers.

" No, no, wait!" the Doctor yelled frantically, jumping in front of Miss Finnegan, blocking Selene completely, " Whatever you're about to do to her—please, don't. If you have to do anything… do it to me, please, just don't hurt her. Please."

Miss Finnegan stared up at him, at his genuinely horrified face and his wide brown eyes… something stubborn lurked in those eyes. After a moment of thought, her eyebrow quirked.

" Hmm. I'll just save her for later." At those words, the Slab pushed Selene away with enough force to knock her sideways into the wall. She gasped loudly as her head knocked harshly against it; the next thing the Doctor saw was her slump forwards and onto the linoleum floor. Then, in a flash, he was forced down into the same position she had just been in, kneeling down, neck exposed. She slid her fingers over the side of his neck.

" I'm afraid this is going to hurt. But if it's any consolation, the dead don't tend to remember," Miss Finnegan told him smugly, sticking the straw right into his jugular vein.

A few very horrible minutes later, Selene came to with her vision spinning—like in films when the world is pulled this way and that. She saw a very pale Doctor slumped in the Slab's grasp… a disgusting slurping sound… the bang of a door opening.

A group of Judoon followed by Martha walked in just as Miss Finnegan pulled away from the Doctor and hid her straw inside her handbag. The Slab quickly dropped the Time Lord, letting him flop motionless to the floor. Selene, still regaining her senses, braced her hands against the cold linoleum and tried to push herself up.

" Now see what you've done? This poor man just died of fright," Miss Finnegan exclaimed, pointing to the crooked form of the Doctor.

" Scan him!" the chief Judoon ordered. A masked soldier stepped forward and did just that. " Confirmation—deceased."

" No…" Selene groaned, pulling herself up halfway.

" No, he can't be!" Martha said, pushing her way towards the front. " Let me through, let me see him!" Martha was stopped by a hand on her shoulder.

" Stop. Case closed."

" But it was her. She killed him!" Martha stared at Miss Finnegan. Selene crawled her way towards the Doctor, grasping his cold hand in hers. " She murdered him!"

" Judoon have no authority over human crime."

" She isn't human!" Selene spoke up, glaring at the Judoon captain.

" Oh, but I am, I've been cataloged!" Miss Finnegan announced, holding up her marked hand.

" But she's not, she assimi—wait a minute. You drank his blood? The Doctor's blood?" Martha quickly asked. Selene let a smirk appear on her face as Martha pointed at Miss Finnegan with a scanner.

" Yes, yes she did," Selene agreed.

" Oh, I don't mind. Scan all you like." The scanned beeped.

" Nonhuman."

" Wh-what?"

" Confirm analysis."

Every Judoon removed their scanners and pointed it at her.

" Oh, but it's a mistake, surely!" she tried to reason, voice becoming worried, " I'm a human, I'm as human as they come!"

" Says the woman with blood on her lips…" Selene shot back with a glare.

" He gave his life so they'd find you," Martha murmured, staring down at the Doctor's lifeless body.

" Confirm—plasmavore. Charged with the crime of murdering the child princess of Padrivole Regency Nine," the Judoon captain said, eyes locked on the plasmavore before him. She sneered and hissed,

" Well, she deserved it! Those pink cheeks and those blond curls and that simpering voice! She was begging for the bite of a plasmavore."

" Then you confess?"

" Confess? I'm proud of it! Slab, stop them!"

The Slab rushed forward, but was promptly stopped by the Judoon with the use of one laser gun.

" Verdict: guilty. Sentence: execution."

Miss Finnegan plugged in the MRI, which caused Magnetic Overload.

" Enjoy your victory, Judoon, because you're gonna burn with me! Burn in he-!"

Her last word, presumably 'hell,' was cut off as each and every Judoon in the room fired at her with red lasers. With the threat of the plasmavore gone the head Judoon said,

" Case closed."

" But what did she mean, burn with me? The scanner shouldn't be doing that, she's done something!" Martha told them. The captain of the Judoon removed a scanner and walked towards the MRI machine.

" Scans detect lethal acceleration of monomagnetic pulse."

" Well, do something! Stop it!"

" Our jurisdiction has ended. Judoon will evacuate."

Martha made to say something else but Selene shook her head.

" They won't listen, aliens are stubborn, particularly those who think they rule over everyone else," she told the medical student, rising to her knees above the Time Lord. The Judoon exited the MRI scanner room quickly, as to evacuate efficiently and before the scanner did what Miss Finnegan wanted it to do. " If we want to save the Doctor we need to do something now."

Martha immediately went into doctor mode and began to do CPR. She expelled a lungful of air into the Doctor's mouth then began to compressions over by his heart.

" One, two, three, four five. One, two, three, four, five."

" Martha—Martha! Remember what you found this morning?" Selene interrupted her. There was a pause as Martha's eyes widened.

" Two hearts! Do you know CPR?" she asked while scrambling to kneel behind the Doctor's head. Selene blinked a few times.

" Uh, I had basic training in high school."

" Good, chest compressions, now!"

Selene quickly entwined her fingers between the ones on her other hand, placed her palm by the heart on his right side and began to do the compressions again.

" One, two, three, four, five." To the other heart. " One, two, three, four, five."

Martha blew in a breath.

" One, two, three, four, five." To the other heart. " One, two, three, four, five."

Both were panting heavily with the effort and the oxygen literally almost out. Sucking in one last lungful of air, Martha blew the breath into his mouth. As Selene began to prepare for more compressions, the Doctor gasped and then began to cough, making both women smile in relief. Martha slumped to the side, head spinning and vision blurring.

" The scanner… she did something…" she murmured to the Doctor, who sat up shakily whilst gasping for air. Selene braced her arms against the floor, trying to keep her breathing slow and steady, but it was hard. It was really hard.

With Martha unconscious and Selene struggling to hold on and with the entirety of the hospital out of oxygen, the Doctor crawled his way to the controls and forced himself up. Each movement was stiff, laboring, and he felt tired. His lungs were heavy, like he'd had them filled with cement and his hearts—God, his hearts—they were thumping raggedly and they hurt. He flung himself onto the panel and then slid downwards back towards the ground, reaching for his inside pocket… and he found nothing. His brows furrowed.

" Oh, the Sonic…" he muttered as the MRI scanner flashed brightly. Eyeing a mash-up of cables, the Doctor slipped to his knees, gripping the bulk of the cords. After a moment of consideration he took hold of one. " Blue. No." Then, grabbing the red cord, he unplugged it and suddenly… the scanner shut off, the electricity died.

The Doctor coughed and could feel himself shaking. This wasn't good, this wasn't good… Mustering all his strength, he stood up completely, shuffled over to Selene, who was hunched over, coughing and gasping. He sucked in a breath again and slid his arms under her armpits and helped her up. She would have thanked him, but the world was getting a bit too dark around the edges for her liking. So, while she braced herself against the wall, the Doctor valiantly picked up Martha, holding her in his arms. It would have been an easy feat had the air not been so, so thin…

Eventually, after much labored walking and very little pausing, the three were back in the hospital ward the Doctor had been kept in the previous night. The Time Lord and the American time traveler watched as the Judoon ships began to leave.

" Come on, come on, come on, come on, please… come on, Judoon, reverse it…" the Doctor muttered while Selene sat down on a bed, vision becoming worse and worse.

Rain began to patter against the window as it sped downwards. The Doctor grinned.

" It's raining Martha. It's raining on the moon."

A flash of light and then the Royal Hope Hospital was back on Earth.

The Doctor set Martha down on a bed, propping her head up on the pillow. The air was suddenly thick. It felt like they were inhaling some sort of liquid. Selene sucked in a long, large breath and blew it out slowly through her lips, shaking her head, which was still spinning. A warm hand rested on her arm, causing her to look up.

" Are you alright?" he asked her, " You hit the wall pretty hard." A tiny scoff left Selene's lips.

" I have a thing for that, don't I? Hitting my head…" she said, breath still a bit labored, " I have to really cut that out… it isn't fun."

" Let me help you."

The Doctor helped Selene stand, his arm looped around her waist. Then, just like they'd walked into that hospital the day prior, they snuck out the back, supporting each other as they went. They spent a moment just getting their balance back, getting rid of that nauseous feeling the lack of oxygen caused. Once they were able to walk properly, they wove their way past the EMTs and the police and back towards the blue police box across the street. As they made their way towards it, they smiled when they met eyes with Martha; they waved and as Martha was distracted by her sister…

They disappeared.

OOOO

The honest to God last people Martha expected to see that night at her brother Leo's disastrous party, was Selene and the Doctor. As the majority of her family stormed out of the pub, Martha suddenly spotted them leaning in the mouth of an alleyway. They'd changed—the Doctor was in a brown suit with pale blue pinstripes with a long tan coat on, a familiar tie around his neck and Selene had dawned a black flowy tank top underneath a grey jacket and some white jeans. Then, once they'd caught her eye, they turned back to the alley, disappearing again. Martha felt as though she were meant to follow.

So she did.

There they stood at the end of the alley by that odd blue police box that had been by the hospital earlier. Martha smiled at them, a smile which they returned.

" I went to the moon today," she said.

" A bit more peaceful than down here," the Doctor said, referencing the family squabble that had just passed.

" You never even told me who you are."

" The Doctor."

" What sort of species? It's not every day I get to ask that."

" I'm a Time Lord," the Doctor replied, still leaned up against the time machine. Martha scoffed.

" Right! Not pompous at all then." She turned to Selene. " And what about you? You said you were human, but you didn't want to get detected by the scanners." Selene shrugged and smiled.

" Oh, you know, I'm just… from a different dimension. I'll tell you the story some time, it's a long one," Selene told Martha with a grin. She nudged the Doctor and nodded. He reached into his coat and into the orange silk lined pocket for his brand new Sonic, which he removed.

" I just though, since you saved my life and I've got a brand-new Sonic Screwdriver that needs road testing… you might fancy a trip," he said, pointing to the TARDIS with the Sonic.

" What, into space?"

" Well…"

" But I can't. I've got exams. I've got things to do. I have to go into town first thing and pay the rent. I've got my family going mad."

" The beauty of this?" Selene pointed at the blue box. " It's a Time Machine too. We can get you back within hours of you leaving. We can travel in time."

" Get out of here."

" We can," the Doctor agreed.

" Come on, now, that is going too far," Martha said, shifting the red leather jacket around in her hands.

" We can prove it," he said, stepping inside, the door creaking. Selene held up a finger that meant 'one second' and disappeared inside as well. The TARDIS engines whirred and the light atop the box flashed. It faded in and out of sight while blowing out a gust of wind. Eyes widening, Martha stepped forward and reached out a hand to where it had once been. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Just as fast as it had disappeared, it was returning. Martha gasped and stepped back as the TARDIS thudded back into place. Out came the Doctor, pointing at his tieless neck. Then, Selene stepped out, wearing the tie headband style.

" Told ya," the Doctor said simply, pulling the tie off Selene's head.

" No, but… that was this morning," Martha protested in shock, thinking back to it. She shivered slightly, but she wasn't sure if it was at the startling truth she'd just received or if it was because it was cold outside. " But—did you? Oh, my God, you can travel in time! But hold on, if you could see me this morning, why didn't you tell me not to go in to work?"

" Crossing into established events is strictly forbidden. Except for cheap tricks," the Doctor explained, having put his tie back on and fixed the collar. Martha smiled at the two.

" And that's your spaceship?" Martha asked, stepping towards it.

" It's called the TARDIS—Time And Relative Dimension In Space."

Martha, intrigued, placed her hand on the side of the box and then said,

" You spaceship's made of wood. There's not much room. We'd be a bit intimate."

The Doctor pushed the door open.

" Take a look."

So, Martha did. She stepped inside and stared at the massive console room. Selene and the Doctor leaned against the ramp railing as she stared wide-eyed at the console, at the wires hanging from the ceiling, at everything.

" No, no, no, no…"

Martha rushed back outside and did a few laps around the box to make sure it was really that small… or that big… or… whatever it was.

" But it's just a box! But it's huge!" She appeared in the doorway again. " How does it do that?" She knocked on the outside. " It's wood. It's like a box with that room just rammed in. It's…"

The Doctor and Selene met eyes and mouthed the next words with her.

" Bigger on the inside."

" Is it? I hadn't noticed!" the Doctor asked, closing the door. The Doctor quickly shed his jacket, tossed it over one of the coral shaped posts and walked past Martha to the console.

" Right then! Let's get going."

" Don't worry, you get used to it," Selene assured Martha, walking with her up to the console.

" But… is there a crew, like a navigator and stuff? Where is everyone?" Martha asked as she began to make her way around slowly.

" Nope. Just Selene and I," the Doctor replied, already at work around the console.

" Just you two? All the time?"

" Well, sometimes I have… guests. I mean, some friends, traveling alongside. Selene's the best example of that, stuck with me through thick and thin, good and bad… I had—it was recently—a friend of ours. Rose," he said, looking up and at Martha, " Her name was Rose. And… we were together. Anyway." He pulled the monitor in front of her. Selene dreaded the next bit of conversation, so she busied herself with wiping some grime off a button or two.

" Where is she now?" Martha asked the dreaded question.

" With her family. Happy. She's fine." The Doctor was trying to get over the sadness of it—try to be able to talk about her without the immense guilt, try to speak of her without Selene looking so upset… " She's… Not that you're replacing her." His finger was held sternly out towards Martha.

" Never said I was," she said with a bit of a laugh.

" Just one trip, to say thanks. You get one trip then back home."

" Well, you're the one that kissed me," Martha teased as the Doctor moved to twist some dials. A hard look crossed into the Doctor's eyes as he looked at Martha again.

" That was a genetic transfer. Selene, rotate that crank by your left hand." Selene did as told and smirked, watching the discomfort creeping into the Doctor's face.

" And if you will wear a tight suit…"

" Now, don't."

" …and then travel all the way across the universe just to ask me on a date."

" Stop it." The Doctor leaned towards her, dead serious. Martha smiled.

" For the record, I'm not remotely interested. I only go for humans."

Selene, who was now leaning up against the console smiled to herself and thought, keep telling yourself that, Martha… we all fall for him…

" Good. Well, then!" His voice lightened up as he flicked a lever upwards. He took Selene's waist and moved her aside, twisting another dial. " Close down the gravitic anomalizer! Fire up the helmic regulator! And finally…" He smiled brightly at the two women. " The hand brake." He moved to grab the ignition lever. " Ready?"

" I certainly am," Selene announced, matching his smile. Martha, smiling despite herself, met both of their gazes.

" No," she told them.

" Off we go," the Doctor replied, pulling the lever. He was thrown backwards as they took off, promptly falling into the driver's seat as Martha and Selene grabbed onto the console.

" Blimey, it's a bit bumpy!" Martha exclaimed over the sound of the engines. The Doctor leaned forward and grabbed onto the controls as well.

" Welcome aboard, Miss Jones!" he said, shaking her hand.

" It's my pleasure, Mr. Smith!"

" Miss Jones, I think we'll have some fun on this trip!" Selene laughed. Martha, grinning over at her nodded.

" I believe so as well, Miss Thomas!"

" Well, with all the formalities over," the Doctor called out, working his way towards the monitor, " Let's see where the TARDIS will take us this time!"

Afterword: So, there's Smith and Jones! I honestly think that the first half was better than the second half. The beginning of each season that has a new companion is usually meant to introduce that character and their personality and what not; I found it hard to put Selene in it. BUT SHAKESPEARE IS NEXT. That's gonna be fun!

Okay, guys I have a two questions for you.

One: Could you tell me if there's an actress that grabs you as Selene's face claim? 'Cause I've been having a tough time finding one. They don't have to fit her to a T, but I'm still if-y on who it should be.

Two: How do you guys want Selene to remember the show? Have her only have memory slips like in this episode, or have her actually remember stuff?

Please let me know, it would help out a lot :)
