When Massie reaches out to grab her coffee she doesn't expect to lock eyes with a mismatched pair of blue and green. Nor does she expect to blush or feel a strange warmth usually reserved for rare times with Derrick. But the barista's tag reads "Cam" and she can't help but admire his shaggy almost black hair and angular features. He was hotter than her steaming mocha and far more likely to burn her.

She ends up going to that specific coffee shop every day during his shift until by the middle of the week he asks her what book she's been reading in the corner table. Next thing she knows they're fast friends sharing titles and authors and secret little smiles. Massie knows she's treading water that might drown her but she can't stop the pull she feels.

"So tell me about this mysterious boyfriend that's never around?" Cam teasing draws out the question as he leans towards where she is sitting across the counter on a stool with an open and ignored book.

Massie rolls her eyes and repeats the same story, "His name is Derrick and he hates reading so he never comes along with me".

Cam chuckles, "Somehow Ms. Massie that kind of boy doesn't seem your type".

"Oh really?" She raises her brow and voice jokingly. "And what is my type then?"

"I'm still trying to figure that out," Cam tells her mysteriously.

Massie kicks herself for how hard she is blushing and clinging to all of his words. But it's true Derrick and her interests never aligned the way her and Cam's did. They listen to all the same music, read the same books, and loved the same artwork. Cam was kind of perfect in a lot of ways as a companion. Massie just had to remember he was just a friend.

Derrick notices that his girlfriend is a little busier then normal the last few weeks but doesn't put too much thought into it. She is always doing some kind of charity work or studying away her time. He's much more focused on the soccer state championship coming up.
