The wedding

Lucy kneeled in front of her mother's grave and patted the damp flower soil she had just evenly distributed. Taking care of her mother's grave was painful but it was important to her. She came here regularly and every time she would tell her mother what was going on in her life.
It was the weekend before Donna's and Opie's wedding. After her fight with Jax she had cried all the way home. In the evening she had called Donna and told her that she wouldn't be attending the wedding. Donna had sounded very disappointed but she had also understood Lucy's reasons. The next day at work she had told Charlie that she had changed her mind and didn't want to go. He hadn't asked any questions. The last few weeks with him had been great. He took care of her. She knew that he was falling for her and she felt guilty for not feeling the same way about him.
She pushed herself up and patted the dirt of her Jeans. Then she said goodbye to her mother and walked back to her car. She had parked near John Teller's grave and when she got into her car she saw Jackson sitting in front of it, smoking a cigarette. She smiled at the sight of him. He was wearing a dark blue t-shirt and a white long sleeve underneath. Both were unusual tight for him and Lucy could see his muscles move every time he put the cigarette to his lips. He seemed to be writing stuff into a little notebook. Lucy had never seen him do that and she bet if he saw her he would quickly put it away. His shaggy blond hair fell into his face and occasionally he pushed it back. Lucy's heart beat quickened as she thought about burying her fingers into it. She quickly looked away. This was bad. She finally had to accept that they were done. He had a new girlfriend and she had Charlie. She still wanted him but after the things he had said in front of Opie's and Donna's house she was sure he didn't feel the same way about her. When she started the engine he looked at her. For a second she thought he was going to smile, but then his jaw tensed again and he cramped the notebook into his pocket. He got up and watched her. She smiled at him and waved but put her hand down as soon as she realized that he was walking towards her.
"Shit," she mumbled and thought about driving off. She didn't. She watched him approach, unbuckled and got out of the car.
"Are you following me?" Jax barked when he had almost reached her.
She put up her hands, palms facing him: "No. Of course not. I was just here to visit my mom."
His features softened for a second: "Right. Sorry."
"No worries."
"How are you doing?"
"I'm fine." She forced a smile. Her heart raced because he stood so close to her. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and bury her face in his chest. She missed him so much. After all the horrible things that had happened to her parents she still missed him the most. Her mother was forever gone but Jax was right here. No matter how hard she tried to forget him, somehow he always showed up when she least expected.
"I'm sorry about last time," he suddenly said, jolting her out of thoughts: "About the things I said about you and Diner Charlie. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all. He's just …."
"What?" Lucy frowned.
"He's just not good enough for you," Jax said. This surprised her. Why would he say that?
"Oh? But Wendy's good enough for you?"
Jax snorted and crossed his arms.
"I just think you deserve better." Lucy shrugged, his words didn't really have any meaning, seeing as he was screwing some junkie croweater that obviously wasn't good for him.
"What? You wanna work in a Diner for the rest of your life?" He continued
"You really wanna go there Jackson?" She questioned.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means there are things Charlie can give me. Things you'll never be able to give me," she crossed her arms and glared at him.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about you and the club. About the way bodies have been dropping around us for years. Your dad, my mom. How do you think this would have played out?" She motioned from him to herself and back.
"Lucy…." He started but she cut him off.
"I'm not going to make my kids suffer this way. Suffer my fate. Charlie can give me a future without violence and without murder. I'm not going to turn into my mother. I'm not gonna end up here - dead and cold - while you rot in jail and our children have to take care of themselves. I'm not going to get myself killed like she did. I'm smarter than that. I'm smarter than her." She didn't know why she kept talking. She didn't even mean half of it.
"How can you say that?"
"Because it doesn't matter! I know how my life will end if I stay with you. We'll never grow old together. I know that but it doesn't matter. I still want you Jackson. You'll never be able to give us a long life together. One of us is going to end up in this place to early. I know that and because I'm stupid and in love, I don't care."
"I don't know what to say."
Lucy looked up and saw the anger hat completely vanished. All that was left was pain. He looked like he was about to cry and it broke her heart to know that she was the one causing him all this pain.
"Say you want me back," she whispered.
"I'm … I'm with Wendy," he sighed. His face hardened as he stepped forward, gently kissed her; and then hurried towards his bike, leaving her behind. Lucy winced at the noise as the kick-started his bike. His shape blurred once her eyes filled with tears. Now he knew. He knew why she was so scared of being with him. And he knew that she wanted him back. Now he knew that she was still in love with him. Too bad, that he didn't feel the same way about her.

Lucy called in sick the next morning. Charlie offered to come by but she told him that she didn't want to infect him. He did have a restaurant to run. He reluctantly agreed when she promised to call him as soon as she was feeling better. She then spent all week on her couch, crying, eating chocolate and cursing herself. All she had wanted was to get Jax back. All she had done was push him even further away. All those horrible things she had said, she would never be able to take them back. The day before the wedding a knock on the door pulled her back into reality. She looked around. There were Pizza boxes, Chips packages and laundry scattered all around her apartment. She tried pushing as much things as possible out of sight while she walked towards the door. She prayed to god that it wasn't Charlie. She looked horrible, but not in a sick way. Her eyes were puffy and red from crying. If Charlie saw her this way he would know that something was wrong. She didn't want to have to explain to him why she truly didn't come to work. She was relieved when she opened the door and it wasn't Charlie who was looking down on her, but Gemma Teller. For a second Lucy thought about shutting the door in her face, but she knew that would make Gemma only more angry and she really didn't need any more enemies.
"Hi sweetheart," Gemma said and pushed past her. Puzzled Lucy turned and watched her step over a large pile of junk food packages.
"This place is a pigsty," she exclaimed and pushed a couple of magazines of the couch, before sitting down.
"I had a bad week," Lucy sighed.
"I can see that."
"Is there a reason for your visit, Gemma?" Lucy asked, sitting down next to her.
"I've told you before: 'You're family' and family looks out for each other. Jax told me about your fight the other day."
"Oh," Lucy frowned. This wasn't good. Gemma was always very protective of Jax and if she knew all the disgusting things Lucy had said to him, this wasn't going to be a pleasant visit.
"I've decided to forget those awful things you said about your mom, but if you ever humiliate her like that again I'll break you pretty little nose." Lucy knew that she wasn't joking.
"I feel horrible about that," Lucy looked at the floor embarrassed.
"You should," Gemma sighed: "Those other things you said, did you mean them?"
"About me wanting Jax back?"
"Yeah."
"Yes. I want him back. I want him back to bad."
Gemma looked her over: "You broke his heart. My son is a proud man. He doesn't forgive easy."
"I know. I know he doesn't want me back."
"That's not what I said baby"
Surprised, Lucy looked up: "What do you mean?"
"He still loves you."
Lucy pulled up an eyebrow: "Did he say that?"
"He doesn't have to. I'm his mother."
"He told me that he's with Wendy now. I told him I want him back. He obviously doesn't feel the same way about me."
"I don't care what he said. He's still in love with you."
"If you say so."
"What you did to him six month ago, that's not just going to go away. And as long he has someone to hold at night he's not going to consider taking you back. Whatever Wendy is giving him, it's enough for him to hide his feelings for you."
"What do you want me to do? I don't think 'sorry' is going to cut it?"
"You're right it's not," she got up and walked into her bedroom. The rooms was a mess just like the living room, but Gemma was determined to reach the closet. She pushed dirty laundry out of the way and opened it.
"What are you doing?" Lucy hurried towards her.
"You need something to wear tomorrow."
"I'm not going," Lucy exclaimed at started putting the things Gemma pulled out back in.
"Yes you are. You need to show him that you really mean it and while you're at it, you better make sure that junkie whore stays clear of your man."
"How do you expect me to do that?"
"Your mama raised you well. You'll think of something." Gemma held a dark blue dress in front of her and nodded.
"You'll wear this."
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because your mom was my best friend and I promised her to always take good care of you."
Suddenly she held onto Lucy's chin and forced her to look at her: "But don't ever break my son's heart again."
Lucy nodded: "Never again."
"Good. Now put this on."

The next morning Lucy eyed herself in the mirror. She was wearing the blue dress Gemma had selected yesterday paired with crème colored high-heels and discreet jewelry. The wedding was going to be held at Donna's parent's house. Gemma wanted to pick her up around two o'clock. The wedding was supposed to start at three and that would leave them enough time. Thinking about the day made her nervous. The fact that Gemma was going to be by her side helped her. Shortly before two a car honked outside. She walked outside and got in on the passenger's side.
"Hey," she smiled.
Gemma smiled: "Hey baby."
They didn't talk until they reached their destination. Many bikes were parked in front of the large house.
"I don't think I can do this. I can't see him with another women."
Gemma took her hand: "Do you want him?"
"Yes."
"Then get out. It's going to be ok."
Lucy did as she was told and got out of the car.
"Lucy Stone!" A voice behind her called and when she turned she was looking into the grinning face of Bobby Elvis.
"Bobby," she laughed and hugged him tight.
"How are you doing kiddo?" He asked and held her at arm's length "You look great."
Lucy giggled: "Thanks."
"Oh everybody is going to be so happy to see you," He smiled and pulled her towards the backyard. Everything looked beautiful and so different from their usual parties. Donna's parents had spared neither efforts nor expenses. Rows of chairs were set up and in front a little pedestal had been set up. Everything was held in white and light green.
"Wow," she exclaimed.
"Beautiful," Gemma, who had just stepped to her side, smiled: "A bit suburban."
Lucy laughed and nodded: "A bit."
Gemma waved at Clay, who was saving them a seat in the second row. Lucy and Gemma went to him and sat down. Lucy guessed that Jax was going to be the best man and her presumption was confirmed when Jax and Opie walked down the aisle. Jax looked great. He wasn't wearing hit cut, but dark blue jeans, a white button-down shirt and a black jacket. Opie was wearing a black suite and his long beard trimmed. Jax looked around and when his eyes fell upon her his jaw tensed. He leaned forward and said something to Opie, who then looked at her as well. In contrary to Jax he smiled and winked at her. She winked back and smiled. Opie had always been good at reading her and he probably knew why she was here. It wasn't just to celebrate with him and Donna, it was also to show Jax that she was not going anywhere. Then a piano started playing and Lucy got up. All guests turned and watched as Wendy walked down the aisle in a dark green dress. It was a bit short and the neckline was extremely low-cut, but Lucy still had to admit that she looked great. It wasn't until she was closer and Lucy could see the hidden track marks that she realized the slightly staggered walk and the hazy glance.
"She's flushed," Lucy whispered towards Gemma, who pulled up an eyebrow and nodded.
"She's not good for him."
Lucy nodded: "Definitely."
Just then the piano changed tune and Donna stepped onto the white drapery. She was wearing a long white wedding gown. It was simple but beautiful.
The ceremony took around half an hour and at the end, when the new bride and groom finally kissed, everyone clapped. Opie and Donna were beaming when their parents and friends congratulated them. Lucy waited until most guests had went on to the delicious looking buffet until she stepped in front of the newlyweds.
"Congratulation," Lucy said and hugged first Donna, then Opie.
"I'm really happy you came," Donna said, then she leaned forward: "Did you see how high Wendy was. I wanted to kill her when she arrived like that."
"Don't worry about that. You looked beautiful. No one was even looking at her."
"I just asked her to be my bridesmaid because she's Jax' girlfriend."
Lucy cut their conversation short and walked to Gemma and Clay. They sat at their table and were already eating. Lucy sat down next to them and grinned at Tig and Chibs who were just putting their plates down.
"Come here," Chibs said and hugged her.
"You look beautiful doll," Tig smiled and took her face in his hand. He kissed both her cheeks before sitting down. Bobby was still standing in line and Lucy laughed as he rolled his eyes at an elderly women in front of him, who was already putting the third spoon of chicken casserole on her plate.
Piney, Mary and Donna's parents were sitting at a large, white and green decorated, table with the newlyweds. Jax and Wendy were seated near them with Donna's brother and his girlfriend. Another prospect, Lucy believed his name was Juice, and his date were also sitting with them. Lucy realized that Wendy was glaring at her but she didn't looked away. She didn't have a plan yet but she knew that today was her chance to get rid of Wendy, once and for all. They sat together and ate until the band started playing. Donna and Opie shared their first dance and Jax and Wendy joined them shortly after.
The party was fun and Lucy realized that her worries had been unnecessary, no one treated her any different. Everyone seemed to have missed her a lot. She was still part of the family and that made her happy. It was already after nine when she saw Wendy sway towards the women's restrooms. She followed her into the house and closed the bathroom door behind them. Wendy turned around and her eyes widened.
"What do you want?" she hissed.
"I want to talk to you."
Wendy crossed her arms and leaned against the sink.
"Want you wanna talk 'bout?" Wendy slurred.
Lucy rolled her eyes. Wendy had showed up in town in the year before graduation and she had always been using.
"Jax."
"He's over you."
"I don't think so."
Wendy stepped forward and was now nose to nose with Lucy when she said: "Stay away from my man."
It only took Lucy a second to react. She punched Wendy in the face, then pulled a small handgun from her purse. Wendy tumbled but held onto the sink. She didn't fall.
"Stupid bitch. What you do that for?" She was crying and blood was running down her chin. Lucy felt bad for a second. She wasn't the violent type and Wendy really hadn't done anything wrong, but she had to make sure she came across as strong and intimidating.
"You listen closely," Lucy hissed and pressed the gun to Wendy's stomach: "Jackson is mine. He's always been and he always will be."
Wendy tried to say something, but Lucy stopped her.
"If you ever set foot into Charming again or tell Jax about our little friendly conversation, I'm going to kill you." She pressed the gun a little harder into Wendy's body.
Wendy's eyes widened and Lucy knew that she believed every word she had just said. She let go of her and stepped back. She evened out her dress and put the gun back into her purse. Before she left the bathroom the turned once again.
"Oh and you better wash up before you break up with Jax. We don't want him asking any questions."
Lucy slipped out of the bathroom and hurried back to her seat. She downed a glass of champagne in one sip and searched for Jax. She saw him standing next to the dance floor smoking a cigarette. It took Wendy a while to come out of the bathroom and approach Jackson. She had done a great job to hide her probably already bruising face. Lucy watched them talk, then argue and finally Wendy hurried off. Jax didn't follow her.
Lucy closed her eyes for a moment. She had never before hurt or threatened another person like this. Gemma Teller would be proud.
