Samantha looked down at the comic book in her hands, unsure of what she was looking at. There were images of a man in a strange yet colorful outfit throwing what seemed like a large, circular and very, Patriotic shield at a man with a red skull for a head. The conversation between them were hostile, indicating that they were not friends, nor were they close. She could only assume they were enemies. She read a couple more pages before setting the book down on the bed, blue eyes turned to look out the window.
Out in the backyard she could see two boys kicking a ball around. She identified the one with the brown hair as Ben, Sami's younger brother. She was not quite sure who the other boy was. She did not see a boy with black hair and sunglasses earlier when she had arrived. She watched them curiously, wondering why they were trying to hit each other with the ball.
The sound of the door opening again drew Samantha's attention to the door. Mindy had come back with a tray of cookies and two glasses of milk. By the looks of it, she was having a bit of trouble holding said tray. The brunette jumped off of the bed to help the struggling blond. Mindy had let out a squeak of surprise, but nonetheless allowed the younger to help her. Together, they gently set the tray down on the dresser.
After Mindy dusted herself off, she turned back to Samantha, "Sami's mom made some cookies for everyone. I didn't know if you liked milk or not, but I brought you a glass anyway. How are you holding up?"
Samantha gave her a look of confusion, "I'm not holding up anything."
The blond had to think about what the brunette had just said, but then reminded herself that Samantha was from a different time period so she was not familiar with slang. Though she was not sure what she had just said was actually slang. Nonetheless, Mindy just shook her head,
"No, no. Holding up is another way of asking if someone is okay. So, are you okay?" Mindy asked.
With a look of understanding, Samantha just shrugged. She was still upset about the whole thing that had happened just hours before, but everything had been all said and done. Nothing was going to change that. Gohan did want to keep her, but his fiancé, or whoever she was, was not too keen on the idea. She made it pretty clear that she was not interested in having kids, calling Samantha a runt, just another mouth to feed, a brat she didn't have time for. I'f those insults didn't already point that out, she didn't know what did.
Though her feelings had been hurt, she has a home now. Her new guardian, Sami, was hesitant at first, but she seemed to be more into the idea than that woman was. Besides, Samantha liked Sami more than Videl. The older brunette never insulted her or whined about having to give up her social life to raise a child. Samantha just hoped Sami would not change her mind about this whole ordeal, she was not exactly for going to an orphanage.
Now that she thought about it more, she could not run away either. She did not know where, or when, she was. She knew nothing of the world today, she had no existing relatives that she knew of.
At least, that's what the colorful light box at Gohan's house said. Her Grand-Mary and her husband had died of old age. Her Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia, along with her friends, Nelly, Bridget, and Jenny had died on something called "The Titanic". They were coming back to New York on it after their trip to England, but it got into an accident and sank to the bottom of the ocean. There were a list of survivors, but their names were not on it.
As far as she knew, she had no one else to turn to. This family had been, and is, her only option.
She was taken out of her thoughts by a hand waving in her face and someone making a "woohoo" noise. Blue eyes looked up to stare at Mindy, who jumped back in shock. Mindy apologized, informing the brunette that she had spaced out, whatever that meant. Samantha released a sigh, apologizing back before taking a cookie.
While she ate hers, Mindy took one as well. She picked up her glass of milk and dipped the cookie in it, causing Samantha to give her another look of confusion. Why did the blond just do that? Mindy caught the look and explained that the cookies tasted better if she dipped them in the milk. Samantha raised a brow and shrugged, mimicking what the blond had just done. She let out a satisfied hum, dipping the rest of her cookie in the milk before practically devouring it.
The reaction caused Mindy to chuckle, "I'm guessing you liked it?" She asked.
Samantha nodded, apologizing for unladylike way she ate. Mindy shrugged, explaining that it was no big deal. Mindy then went on to talk about different things, comics, school, mis sions (Samantha had no idea what those were, but continued to listen anyway). While Mindy spoke, she found herself staring out the window once more.
Ben and the other boy were now sitting down on the porch, drinking from bottles, eating cookies, and talking. The boy had his glasses off, blue eyes shining in the sunlight as he laughed at something Ben said. She sat there and tried to figure who this guy was. Her own blue eyes wandered over the pictures in Mindy's room, but paused when her eyes fell on a picture. In the photo, Mindy, Sami, and Ben stood huddled together with the mysterious boy and two other unfamiliar people. Samantha pointed at the picture, pausing Mindy mid-conversation.
"That boy is outside playing with Ben." Samantha said.
Mindy looked at the picture for a minute or so before turning back to Samantha, "Um, yeah. That's Dick." She explained.
The look of confusion on the young brunette's face was an indication that Mindy had to explain who Dick was. With a sigh, Mindy explained that Dick Grayson was Sami's other younger brother. He had been adopted by Sami's other father, who was related through Sami's Uncle's genetic experiment, Bruce Wayne. The brunette didn't know what any of that meant, but nodded her head anyway. So, the boy, Dick was Sami's other little brother? Through...science, something that still didn't make sense to her.
That still didn't explain who the other people in the picture were. So she asked anyway. Mindy was about to explain, until the door opened unexpectedly, causing the girls to jump in fright. Sami stood in the doorway, apologizing to the girls for scaring them. Behind her, the blond guy that stood next to Sami in Mindy's picture looked in curiously.
"Everything alright in here? Mom said you girls have been quiet since I left a little bit ago." Sami asked, worry evident in her voice.
Mindy nodded, her pigtails waggling at the same time, "Oh you know, just eating cookies and talking about stuff." She explained.
With a nod, Sami invited the girls to come and sit outside. With a overdramatized sigh, Mindy gave a "Fine" and jumped up off of her bed. She looked down at Samantha, as if silencing asking if she would like to come with. Samantha looked up at them all and shrugged,
"Alright." She replied, getting off of the bed as well. She then followed them through the house and then outside.
Once outside, she had to shield her eyes from the sun with a hand. The feeling of someone touching her hair made her jump as her vision became darkened, something settling on the bridge of her nose. She brought her hands up to touch whatever was on her face, her fingers making contact with what felt like glass. She looked up at Sami, the person who had put these thing on her face, for an explanation. Sami smiled, explaining that the "thing" was actually called sunglasses, bifocals made for lessening the light intensity of the sun. With another nod, Samantha left the "sunglasses" on her face and sat in a nearby chair.
Sami decided to sit in the chair next to her, the blond boy sitting on Sami's other side. Mindy picked up the discarded soccer ball and tossed it at the back of Ben's head. Ben turned and with mock anger, put Mindy in a headlock. The blond challenged the two boys to a game of soccer, to which both accepted and ran off to play their game.
Samantha turned her attention to the blond guy, who was now staring at her. He gave her a warm smile and held out his hand for her to shake, "I'm Jack Dublin. I'm Sami's friend. You must be Samantha Parkington?" He asked.
Samantha got out of her seat and curtsied before shaking his hand, "Yes, that's me. Nice to meet you Jack." She greeted.
Jack looked toward Sami, who had not noticed him looking and was too busy refereeing the soccer game from afar to pay attention. Mindy kicked the ball hard enough that it went off trajectory and hit Dick in the private area, causing everyone to yell "Oh!" And cringe for him. He collapsed in pain, holding himself as he went down.
Sami sighed, "Damn it, Mindy, alright, time for a time-out. Dick, walk it off and take a break. I'll get you some ice. Jack, you're crowd control until I'm back outside."
With that, Sami went into the house to get Dick some ice. Jack sat back in his chair and watched everyone while Dick limped back on to the porch, sitting in Sami's seat. He continued to hold himself, as if doing so would lessen the pain. Within minutes, Sami returned handing Dick his bag of ice. He quickly placed it in his lap, groaning in slight relief. Sami pat him on the back, telling him to take some time off. He agreed without any protest.
Before she could sit back down, the sound of laughter cut through the air. The sound had caused everyone to turn their attention to the source: Esther. The little Russian girl stood in the doorway, taunting Dick. She said something along the lines of not being able to hurt something he did not have. Dick blushed, becoming frustrated with the girl. He told her to shut up and go back inside. She refused and continued with her taunting.
Mindy growled at the other girl, "Esther shut your trap and go the hell back inside. No one wants you out here!" She hollered.
Esther laughed at the blond's insult, "Oh? Like they want you and the other orphan here? Please. If Sami wasn't so worried about her reputation, you two would be out on your asses." Esther mocked.
"That's not true. I do genuinely care about the girls. Reputation or not, I would still care about them. Sorry the same can't be said for you." Sami growled, holding Mindy from attacking the raven-haired girl.
Silence filled the air as everyone else watched in shock. Samantha looked between the two, just as quiet as everyone else. In her eyes, though what Sami said wasn't nice, it was deserved. Esther was being mean to Dick, then she started on Mindy and herself, and then she had the guts to go after Sami. So yes, the comment toward Esther was deserved.
The Russian girl stayed neutral, but Mindy could see it in the girl's eyes. Esther was clearly angry. She looked ready to pounce Sami and strangle her for even saying such a thing. One thing was clear, Esther would not dare to go after Sami physically. She would not, for fear of getting in trouble with Peter or Bloom.
Before Mindy could tell her off completely, Samantha was already on her feet, causing Esther to flinch at the unexpected movement. The Russian stared down at the brunette standing just inches in front of her. Samantha just stared back through the sunglasses, secretly hoping the older would not strike her. She also hoped she was making the right decision,
"What is wrong with you? Why are you so mean?" Samantha asked.
Silence continued to hang in the air. Sami wanted to scoop Samantha up and get her away from Esther, not knowing what the insane girl would do to her. Frankly, she didn't want to find out. She released Mindy and gave her a gentle nudge, silently asking her to move Samantha away from Esther. Mindy was frozen in shock, not sure what to do. She didn't know that Samantha would approach Esther.
"Excuse me, Ingrate?" Esther ground out through gritted teeth.
Samantha gulped, but still stood strong, "Why? Why are you so mean? What did anyone do to you?" She asked shakily.
The raven-haired girl continued to stare at the younger, hand just itching to hit the brunette. Esther turned her eyes to look towards Sami, who is practically daring her to do something so the elder could take her out right then and there. Esther could not risk to do anything, because if Sami didn't do something, Bloom or Peter sure as hell would. The Russian girl huffed and decided not to do anything, choosing to walk away instead. She heard Mindy snort in disbelief.
As Esther retreated back into the house, Mindy shook her head. She muttered "unbelievable" under her breath. Ben and Dick pretty much had the same reaction as Mindy. Sami was angry, but was glad that this didn't escalate into anything more than a verbal dispute. Samantha just stood, staring at the glass door in frustrated confusion. They sat in silence.
"After she stirred up all this shit, she just decided to walk away? Predictable." Mindy asked, rolling her eyes.
