Chapter Six
The next day, Samantha sat quietly in Bloom Parker's garden with her nose buried in the book she was reading. She had come to discover this newfound hiding place while she had toured the home. Having been exposed to gardening for the duration of her life at Mt. Bedford, she had become mesmerized by the beautiful garden. It seemed like it had jumped right out of the pages of one of her books. It was just so...magically unrealistic but beautiful. Someone cleared their throat behind her, causing the young brunette to turn around and look toward the source of the sound.
Sami stood not too far behind her, watching the smaller brunette with interest and curiosity. Samantha placed the book on the bench before she stood up and curtsied, asking if the elder needed anything. Sami shook her head, informing the younger that she had been curious about where the young girl had run off to. The younger apologized, admitting that she had been admiring the garden and decided to read. Sami nodded, sitting down on the bench where Samantha previously sat. She looked down at the book, canting her head to the side in order to read the title without touching the book.
""The Wizard of Oz". Good choice. L. Frank Baum is an excellent story teller." Sami said, turning back to look at the younger.
Samantha smiled and nodded. She picked the book up and sat next to the elder, "I have read it a hundred times before. I used to own one of the first copies ever released, one of the first ones he signed. Grand-Mary took me to the bookstore in town to meet him. He was such a nice guy." she explained.
"That's pretty awesome. Must have been pretty exciting." Sami said.
Samantha nodded once again, "It was. The line was really long, but it was definitely worth the wait. I wish I still had that book, his signature was so beautiful and neat. The book itself was beautifully printed and just...so fantastic. From the bindings to the parchment paper." she said dreamily.
Sami raised a brow, "Do you remember what had happened to the book?" she asked.
Samantha shook her head. She either left it at her old home in Mt. Bedford, or had taken it with her to New York City when she had moved with her Aunt and Uncle. She became sad at the thought, wondering what had happened to her Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia while aboard the Titanic before their deaths. Of what had happened to Nellie and her sisters while with her Aunt and Uncle. She wondered if Grand-Mary had been worried. Another thought crossed her mind as her brain reminded her that this was a different time, that her family might be...dead. Tears escaped the younger girl's blue eyes, causing Sami to embrace her.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked." Sami whispered into the other's hair, holding Samantha to her chest.
Samantha hugged her back, burying her face into the elder's chest, "It's okay. You just asked me a question and I drifted off." her muffled voice responded.
Sami laid her head on the other's, looking at the bushes not too far away. A thought came to mind; didn't her father know a couple historians in the Mt. Bedford area? They kept some of the houses preserved up there to act as more of a museum. If she looked into it, maybe Samantha's old home was one of those houses. Sure, Gohan had brought her clothes from Samantha's other home in New York City, but the child had lived elsewhere before that hadn't she?
"Samantha?"
Samantha sniffled as she looked up at the elder, "Yes?"
Blue eyes met blue eyes, "What if I told you that I could take you to your old home?"
"Like New York City?"
"Try Mount Bedford."
Samantha smiled, "Really?"
"Really."
One quick phone call later, Peter had contacted his old teammate Amadeus Cho, who worked with the Historical Society in the Mount Bedford area. Though it had taken some convincing from Peter, Amadeus agreed to let the Parker Family come up and take a look at some of the homes. So, after packing the family in both Sami and Peter's cars, they made a very long drive up to Mount Bedford, New York. They had to make a quick detour at the Osborn Manor to pick up Jack, who wanted to tag-along. He had been forced to sit in the back with Mindy and Samantha after Ben stole shot-gun.
The entire ride up, Samantha continued to stare up at him, trying to figure out the connection between him and Sami. The real connection, not just the best friends part. There had to be more to them. Otherwise, why would Mindy and Ben teased Sami and Jack, insisting to Samantha that the older teens were a couple? The whole way up they sang some silly song about Sami and Jack in a tree, Jack shook his head, reassuring the tiny brunette that he and Sami were best friends and just knew each other for a really long time. Samantha nodded, but was not convinced. The two were too touchy feely with each other to just be friends.
At least, that is what Grand-Mary and Uncle Gard had taught her.
An hour and a half later, they had reached their destination. The Parker family was in awe at the luscious green lawns and Victorian style houses. The Hudson River sparkled in the sunlight. After parking the cars, they all filed out of the cars. Amadeus stood next to one of the houses, holding a couple files at his side. Peter and Bloom walked over to greet him, both shook his hand.
Amadeus brought Bloom's hand up to his lips, kissing the back of her hand, "How did such a beautiful and charming woman find a guy like Parker here?" he asked, playfully winking at Peter.
Peter gave a mock smile, punching Amadeus in the arm, "Ah, Amadeus. Still the same old kidder. How's life treating you?" he asked.
While they went into normal conversation, the teens and kids went on a search to find Samantha's old home. Amadeus stopped the group, informing them that they were allowed to take the things from one house, so it better have been the right one or he would be in so much trouble. Sami and Jack nodded. Sami even promised to find duplicates to replace the items, but Amadeus told her not to worry about it. Though surprised, Sami thanked the Asian male before taking the group to find this house. Esther stayed behind with Amadeus, Peter and Bloom, not at all interested in their silly little game.
"All of these houses. Where to first?" Anya asked, running ahead of the group. She had slept in when everything had went down this morning so the only thing she knew was that she had a new little friend and that they were going on a trip to New York. Due to the limited space in Sami's car, and the fact that Esther did not bother her, she rode up with Esther, Peter and Bloom in Peter's car.
Sami bent down in front of Samantha, "Can you remember exactly which house it was?" she asked.
Samantha nodded before running ahead with Anya. A groan escaped Ben, making a comment about "hating exercise" before running ahead as well, Mindy hot on his heels. Sami and Jack chuckled, maintaining a quick jog behind the younger teens and kids. Along the way, Anya or Ben would point to random houses that they passed, asking if "It was this one" or "what about this one?" Samantha did not reply, indicating that none of those houses were hers. Mindy let out a playfully grunting noise, asking "Are we there yet?".
"Don't start." Sami said, flashing the blond a smile.
"But why not?" Jack asked in a mock whine, smiling at Sami's glare.
Before Sami could make a remark, Samantha came to an abrupt halt, causing the rest of the group to do the same. Ben tripped at the last second, sending him tumbling to the ground. Sami and Jack snickered, but helped the brunette off of the ground. Mindy called him a klutz, but brushed the dirt out of his hair for him. Sami brushed the dirt off of her little brother before turning her attention to where they were.
The house was definitely quite the hike away from the entrance, surrounded by a vast amount of space. The closest house was just beyond the tree-line, but still two-three minutes away on foot. Definitely owned by someone with wealth and who wanted their privacy. The house itself was painted a pale blue with white accents and screamed Victorian Luxury. It looked just like a dollhouse. The Hudson River was not too far off, a blue and white boat house sitting right along the river. After everyone had caught their breaths, Anya and Ben both asked Samantha if this was the house. The brunette nodded.
"Finally!" Anya yelled, throwing herself backward into the grass, lying on the cool ground. Mindy did the same.
Sami playfully tapped them with the toe of her shoe, "Ey! No lying around on the job! We just got here!" she said.
Mindy and Anya groaned in unison before getting to their feet, with some help from their companions. After they were off of the ground, Samantha led them to the front door. She reached out tentatively, but drew her hand back. What was she going to find once she opened the door? Would everything be as though she had never left? Would things be missing from the home? Had someone moved in after her and Grand-Mary? She heard Sami behind her, encouraging her that everything was going to be okay. After gathering up her courage, Samantha twisted the knob and opened the door.
The grand foyer was illuminated by the sunlight that bled in through the window, illuminating the white marble floors. The word "whoa" escaped Mindy and Ben as they trailed into the house. Samantha looked around, recognizing the various paintings and statues. She saw various family portraits of her own family, smiling at the picture of her, her father and her mother. She ran her fingers the frames sitting on the tables around her, smiling at the memories. There were a couple pictures she did not recognize. One was of her Uncle Gard, Aunt Cornelia and Nelly and her sisters, but Aunt Cornelia was holding a baby. After some more investigating, there had been more pictures of the baby who grew up into a girl with brown hair, only Aunt Cornelia and Uncle Gard as well as Nelly and the girls were no longer pictured. They had died on something called "The Titanic". The same girl had her own family and aged to be a grandmother. One of the plaques under her single portrait read "Samantha Edwards".
"That's my cousin." Samantha realized.
Sami came over after looking at the parlor from the foyer, advising Mindy, Ben and Anya not to go too far into the house and not to touch anything. The trio nodded before heading off to search the home. Sami looked up at Mrs. Samantha Edwards. The girl in the picture must have been around Sami and Jack's age when this was painted, she looked strikingly similar to Samantha Parkington, except Edwards had brown eyes whereas Parkington had blue eyes.
After his curiosity had gotten the better of him, Jack wandered to where the two brunettes were standing, looking down at Samantha before looking to Sami. If one did not know any better, despite Samantha's Edwardian fashion, Sami and Samantha could have been related. Even their last names were similar: Parker and Parkington. Both came from somewhere in New York as well. His eyes wandered to another painting, one with Samantha and whom he could only guess was her parents. The mother looked like a mix of Samantha and Sami if both had a clone that was in her thirties.
"Are you sure you two aren't related somehow?" Jack asked.
"I've run several DNA analyses; all of them came back negative. Just coincidence is all." Sami explained with a shrug.
"Did you try running your Dad's or Mom's DNA? What about Bruce's?" Jack asked.
"My mother would come back negative anyway; she's from another dimension remember? Dad or Bruce? More likely Dad. Bruce's family never left Gotham permanently and there are no Wayne lineages anywhere in New York on record."
Jack only nodded in response.
Samantha looked back at the picture of Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia's family in front of a giant red and black boat: The Titanic. She had known that they had died on the ship, but did not know the full story. She turned to Sami and Jack, asking them what the Titanic was. Sami took a deep breath, explaining that the Titanic had been a grand ship that sailed from England to New York April of 1912. It had sunk when it had struck an iceberg. Due to pressure, the ship had split in half sometime during the night. There were survivors but thousands of people died. Sami explained that Samantha's Aunt and Uncle and their family had died, all except for this Samantha Edwards, because the baby had been left behind with Grand-Mary in Mount Bedford. If she was still alive and they had managed to find her, she would be in her late 90s. Her other relatives would also be alive as well.
Samantha perked up a bit. So there was still hope. The unfortunate part would be that none of these relatives would know who she was and how she was still alive. Maybe Samantha Edwards had heard tales of her, but there would be no guarantee that she would even know of her existence. Maybe the girl had been raised by Grand-Mary like she had been. She would find her family...but would they accept her? Would they take her in? She didn't want to just up and leave the Parker Family, she just wanted to know about her family and all that she had missed.
"Do you think she'll like me?" Samantha asked, looking up at Sami with those big blue eyes.
The older brunette's heart melted as Sami gave the younger a comforting hug, "She'll love you." she replied.
"Hey! Guess what I found!" Mindy called, running down the grand staircase with a book in hand.
Samantha let go of Sami as her eyes widened in excitement, "My copy of "The Wizard of Oz!" Where did you find this?" Samantha asked as Mindy handed her the book.
"I found it in the attic." Mindy said.
"When/How did you get into the attic?" Sami and Jack asked in unison.
"I have my ways." Mindy said as she put her hands on her hips in a superhero-esque pose.
The blond was forced to drop the pose when Samantha embraced her in a big hug. Mindy was a little shocked at the sudden contact, but hugged the younger back. Samantha said a long chain of thank you's, to which the blond chuckled, telling her that she was very welcome and that it was really no problem. Sami smiled at the sight, sneaking a picture of them hugging on her iPhone. She reminded the blonde that she had specifically said no touching anything, but before Mindy could protest, Sami said that she would make this case an exception and that she was proud of her kindness and generosity. Mindy dropped the scowl and smiled with pride.
Samantha led the blonde upstairs so that they could collect some of the brunette's clothing and belongings, leaving Jack and Sami in the foyer. Jack looked around, suddenly curious about Ben and Anya's whereabouts. Sami looked around as well before calling Anya's cell while Jack called Ben's cellphone. Not even a second later, they heard two different ringtones coming from somewhere in the back of the house. The teens exchanged confused looks before investigating the source of the sounds. After going through the parlor, kitchen, and laundry room, they had made their way to the back porch. Sitting on the wooden deck, left abandoned were Ben and Anya's cellphones.
Sami picked up the devices, looking down at them in confusion. The teens would not just leave their phones here. They never left their phones just lying around like this. So, either they went swimming in the Hudson or...
"Jack, something is wrong." Sami said.
Elsewhere, Ben and Anya fought against their captors. Five men in winter gear dragged the struggling teenagers to the former Ryland Home and hauled them into an Ice-Cream truck, being sure to cover their mouths with gags and hold their arms and legs. The man holding Ben's arms held the boys arms and fingers to prevent him from accessing the Omnitrix while his partner held Ben's legs tight. The three, yes three, men holding Anya held her by her arms, legs, and middle. She had been thrashing around to the point of wriggling out of their grasps, thus the need for the third guy.
"Hurry up with these brats! The boss needs them alive in order to bait out the others." one thug commanded.
The two were tossed into the truck none-too-gently. The henchmen were on them in a heartbeat, preventing Ben from his Omnitrix and Anya from escaping. Once the doors shut, a sixth and seventh henchmen sped off. Ben had managed to loosen the gag off of his mouth by quickly jerking his head, neck, and mouth. He was about to yell out until he got socked in the nose, causing stars to appear in his line of vision. Anya was free of her gag, but she had no interest in yelling out. Instead, she was hell-bent on getting answers.
"What do you want with us, freaks? You know you and your boss won't get away with this!" Anya said defiantly.
"Stay frosty, brat. I know you're just chilling with excitement." one thug replied.
Ben, who was barely conscious, raised a brow at the thug, "Did you really just make a damn cold and or snow joke? Are you serious? Are all you goons this freaking lame?" the brunette asked, looking between the thugs.
He did not receive a response as the goons chose to ignore the boy. The truck was silent as they drove to wherever they were supposed to be going. Anya and Ben exchanged bored looks.
"Ten bucks says it's an ice themed villain." Ben said.
"Fifteen says they want Samantha." Anya replied.
"Deal." they both said.
The truck came to a screeching halt, indicating that they had arrived at their destination. The two henchmen in the front seats got out of the truck before coming around to open the back doors. There was a momentary second of blindness as the bright hot sun rushed into the truck. Both teens did not get a chance to adjust their eyesight as they were forced out of the truck. They landed hard on their knees, right at the feet of even more thugs. They were then hauled into a large factory-like building, Ben was able to see the "Boyle Cryogenics" signs on the way in. He flashed the Latina a smirk, earning him a roll of the eyes, informing him that that did not mean anything.
The temperature dropped as they descended further and further into the factory, passing various tubs of ice, intricate ice sculptures and walls, as tanks of liquid nitrogen. One room held what looked like a giant fish tank with a body in it, but the thugs moved too fast for Anya or Ben to be sure. The two were thrown on to mechanical hooks, hanging by their cuffs before the thugs left the room. Ben smiled, saying that this was going to be a piece of cake. Just as his fingers reached the Omnitrix face, a cold blast shot out and froze his hands in a block of ice. Another blast shot at Anya's hands as well.
"Going somewhere?" a mechanical voice called out.
Out of the shadows, a robot looking being made themselves known. Their suit was entirely mechanical as it gave off a blue glow. To top off the whole suit was a helmet that looked like a gigantic fish bowl, making them think that maybe Mysterio was the one behind this. Except the villain would be more into magical illusions and not so much ice. Though foreign to Anya, Ben had recognized this fiend from Sami's files. More specifically; the Gotham Files.
"Mr. Freeze, is it?" Ben asked, putting on his best defiant look.
"Who?" Anya whispered.
Mr. Freeze chuckled, "Aren't you a smart one. It's a shame I don't know who you are. Either of you. I do, however, know your sister." he said.
There was an air of silence for a moment. Before Ben wiggled around victoriously, "I knew it! You owe me ten bucks, Miss Anya!" he shouted.
"Enjoy your time, children. Once I get the child, you won't have much of it left." Freeze said, as he went over to the beeping computer.
"...And you owe me fifteen, Mister Ben." Anya said with a smirk as Ben scowled at the wall.
