A/N: Sorry this chapter is later than I planned. Good news though the next chapter is almost done so it shouldn't be that long of a wait. It has also taken forever for me to get autocorrect to recognize Castiel and Mycroft as actual words and not try and constantly correct them. Autocorrect is truly the spawn of santa... I mean satan. hahahahha yeah I'll shut up now. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own Sherlock or Supernatural. If I did I wouldn't be writing fanfiction now, would I?
Chapter 16
They were all sitting in the flat. All of the laptops were out as they tried to find a new case. After Deanna had informed them as to what Castiel had told her about the 66 seals they'd been desperately searching as to what the seals were so that they could stop them. Unfortunately they had no luck.
A knock sounded from the door. John stood up and walked to the door stating "I'll get it."
When John opened the door there was no one there. At first he thought that perhaps he'd been hearing things but then he noticed an envelope sitting in front of the door. He picked it up and brought it into the flat.
Inside the envelope was a gingerbread man that had been burnt to a crisp. Along with the gingerbread man was a note.
Feed me I survive, Give me water I die. What am I?
"Check this out." John said to the others.
The others came rushing over.
"I found this at the door." John said showing them the gingerbread man and the note.
"Feed me I survive, give me water I die?" Deanna questioned.
"Isn't it obvious?" Sherlock stated.
Deanna scowled at him. "We can't all be geniuses like you. Enlighten us."
"It's fire. Feed a fire it grows, give a fire water it diminishes."
"So we know what the riddle means, but we still don't know what the importance of the fire is." Sam pointed out.
"Maybe it's a clue for a case?" John suggested.
"Let's look." Sam said.
Half an hour later something had been found. It turned out that nearby there'd been a case of spontaneous human combustion, or at least that was what it was supposed to be. Sherlock looked at the screen in disgust before pulling out his phone and calling Lestrade.
"Hello Sherlock."
"Why didn't you call me?"
"Excuse me?"
"Why didn't you call me about the case of so called spontaneous human combustion?"
"Arsenal isn't really your division."
"For goodness' sake Lestrade! You should've known that I'd want this case!"
"I thought you'd gone AWOL."
"Well I haven't. I want this case. Where do I need to go?"
"It's not-"
"Not your division? It may be arsenal but someone died because of it! It's your division Lestrade!"
"I'm not needed there and you won't be either Sherlock."
"Why not? I'm the best detective in London!"
"Your brother took the case."
"Mycroft? He actually took a case? But that involves legwork!"
"Don't ask me why he took the case all I know is that he did."
"Goodbye Lestrade." Sherlock said hanging up the phone.
He threw it across the room in anger. He couldn't believe it, his brother the argogant dick had taken a case! Mycroft despised 'legwork' as he often told Sherlock. Why on Earth would he take a case?
The others were all looking at Sherlock in shock as they saw the phone collide with the wall.
"I'm taking the case." Sherlock said striding out the door with no explanation whatsoever. The others all stared at the door in disbelief trying to comprehend what had just happened.
"Only one of us needs to go after him." Deanna stated. John and Sam nodded in agreement.
"Dibbs!" Deanna yelled as she rushed out the door after Sherlock. John and Sam shared a look knowing better than to try and stop Deanna.
"So Sam, shall we do some research?"
"There's not much else to do." Sam said as he walked back over to where his laptop was sitting.
Deanna almost banged into Sherlock when she ran down the stairs towards the street. Sherlock had been standing on the stairs with his hand in the air in an attempt at hailing a cab.
"Sherlock wait!" Deanna yelled as a cab stopped for him.
"What?" He yelled back.
"I'm coming with you." Deanna stated as she climbed into the cab.
"Alright, fine. Just don't get in my way."
"Wouldn't dream of it." Deanna said, giving him a cocky smile. He just rolled his eyes and sat back watching as the scenery flew past the window.
When they arrived at the crime scene Sherlock made a beeline for the dead body. Well what was left of it. All that was left was ashes and bits and pieces of bone. Around where the ashes rested were burn marks but none could be found anywhere else in the room. Also where the ashes were there was nothing nearby that could've set the body alight.
Deanna stared in shock when she saw what was left of the body. Sherlock walked around where the body lay.
"You got a theory?" Deanna asked.
"Spontaneous human combustion." Sherlock murmured to himself with a laugh. "What a ridiculous idea, how would a person miraculously catch fire in such a way?"
"Supernatural involvement?" Deanna suggested.
"But why? What's the motive?"
"The seals? Perhaps this is involved."
Sherlock suddenly stopped and stared at Deanna.
"You're brilliant! Of course! It must be the seals, why didn't I realise it?"
"Because you want everything to be clever Sherlock." A new voice from behind them said. Sherlock whipped around to see none other than Mycroft Holmes standing the the doorway.
"Mycroft." Sherlock growled.
"Sherlock." Mycroft stated.
The two brothers began a very intense staring match. Deanna felt very awkward standing there so she stepped into their line of vision essentially breaking up the staring battle.
"Alright, that's enough! Can't you two just try to get along until this case is solved?"
Two chorused "he started it" sounded.
"I don't care who started it! Stop it!" Deanna ordered.
She heard the two brothers mumble a yes ma'am. She smiled despite herself.
"Now Microsoft..."
"My name is Mycroft." Mycroft corrected.
"Don't care." Deanna said waving her hand in dismissal. "You've been on this case longer than we have, what do you know?"
"The victim was a man in his mid thirties. He was perfectly healthy and generally well liked. He was last seen by his friend Joe on the 31st. He'd gone to Joe's for dinner before heading home around 10-ish. Joe said that he wasn't acting suspicious or anything. Seemed perfectly normal. The police were called three days later after the man had failed to show up for work. They found what we see before us."
"Well I can tell you one thing, he's been dead for 4... No, 5 days." Sherlock said interrupting Mycroft.
"Sherlock." Deanna said in a warning tone.
Sherlock huffed folding his arms.
"Thank you Deanna. As I was saying... The man was perfectly normal up until his death. The only logical suggestion as to how he died would be spontaneous human combustion as there's no evidence of foul play. Now would you two care to explain what you were talking about when you referred to 'seals'?"
"You wouldn't believe us if we told you so no, we'd rather not." Deanna said quickly. "Come on Sherlock, we're going."
"What? Why?"
"There's too much Microsoft here."
"It's Mycroft!" Mycroft yelled at her.
"Still don't care." Deanna shot back.
Back at 221B the only sounds heard were from Sam and John's relentless typing. But then they heard a knock at the door. They looked at each other to verify that they'd both heard it.
Sam got up and went to the door. Yet another envelope was on the ground. Inside was another burnt gingerbread man and a note.
Burn baby Burn.
"Burn baby burn? Isn't that from a song?" Sam questioned.
"Yeah it's from disco inferno."
"Maybe there's a clue within the song." Sam suggested.
They spent the next half an hour listening to the song carefully examining the lyrics. The lyrics held no solid clues. They suspected that perhaps the next victim would be a mother because the song said the line burn that mother down in the chorus quite often.
Even knowing that the next victim could possibly be a mother gave them no more useful information. In London there are heaps of mothers, finding the right one with no solid evidence would take a miracle.
Deanna and Sherlock had decided to walk back, mainly because neither one of them would have enough to pay the cab fare and they weren't about to ask Mycroft for help.
Suddenly they heard the sound of wings flapping. They both stopped and spun around to find the source. When they looked back in the direction they'd been walking they saw none other than Castiel in his holy trench coat.
"Deanna, Sherlock." Castiel said nodding to each of them.
"What do you want Cas?" Deanna questioned.
Cas tilted his head to the side. "Cas?" He questioned.
"Yes, Cas, a shortened version of your name."
Castiel nodded, though he still appeared somewhat confused.
"Well you're not here to debate Deanna's new nickname for you, so why are you here."
"There's a seal here which I need you to protect."
"Can't you do it?" Deanna whined.
"No, there are seals elsewhere that need protecting. I would if I could."
"So why do we have to do it?"
"Because you took the case."
Deanna glanced over to Sherlock and gave him a smug smile. "I was right!" She loudly proclaimed. Sherlock rolled his eyes.
"What were you right about?" Cas asked tilting his head sideways looking a bit like a lost puppy.
"I figured that our case involved one of the seals. So what's the seal we're protecting?"
"A seal will be broken when 3 innocent men are burnt at a cross."
"What? The man we saw had no cross anywhere near him."
"It likely burnt with the man which is why you didn't find it."
"Alright. How long until the seal breaks?"
"Two other men."
"Can you stay and help us find out who these men will be?"
"No, I have stayed as long as I can, I must return to Spain. Goodbye." Cas said as he vanished.
"That went well." Deanna quipped.
The first thing Sherlock and Deanna heard when they entered 221B was the sound of disco inferno playing on full volume. Deanna laughed when she spotted Sam trying to dance in the middle of the room. The second he heard her Sam froze and stared at her.
"How long have you been standing there?" He asked anxiously.
"Not long Sammy." She said with a laugh, Sam let out a sigh of relief.
"Well come on!"
"And do what?"
"Let's dance." Sam said grabbing Deanna's wrists and pulling her out onto the makeshift dance floor (aka the middle of the room).
They began doing that odd dance that couples often do at school dances. The one where they grab each others wrists and just sort of jump back and forth. Sherlock and John watched the pair with amused expressions as their dancing became more complicated and impressive.
John laughed despite himself and Deanna and Sam both stopped. They shared a look and smiled a smile of pure evil.
"Since you two have been enjoying watching us so much we think that it's your turn to dance."
Both Sherlock and John yelled no at the same time. Deanna just rolled her eyes and pushed them together. "We gave you a show, it's only fair that you give us one in return."
"Do you think we should play fair Sherlock?" John asked. Sherlock shook his head and gestured towards a discarded water gun. John caught his gaze and smiled. As they 'danced' they made their way over towards the water gun. The second they were close enough John grabbed it and shot a whole heap of water at Sam. Sam laughed as he found a water gun and armed himself. It wasn't long until they were having a full on waterfight. Mrs Hudson wouldn't be very happy with them...
Once a bit of back spray had hit Deanna she'd joined in the battle. She'd teamed up with Sam and they were both soaking John. After Sherlock had been hit by backsplash enough times he joined in the water fight as well, but he joined John's side.
They were all having so much fun that they failed to notice a small piece of paper slip through the door. Written on the paper was a note. If they'd only noticed the paper as on it were words that would make them fear for their lives.
On the note there was a small red heart drawn. The heart was surrounded by flames. Underneath the drawing was a small sentence.
I told you I'd burn the heart out of you.
A/N: Dun dun duuuuunnnnnn. I hope you enjoyed that and I'm sorry for yet another cliffhanger but that's just where the chapter ended. Keep your eyes out for the next chapter it'll hopefully be up some time in the next week. See you then.
