Also thank you to anyone who is still with this story or any story I have put up even though I'm not on as often as I used to be.
The hardest part about dying was watching Lily protect Harry by herself. To stand there beside her as Voldemort blasted his way into the nursery and saw how brave she was while she held our son in her arms was breathtaking. But knowing there was nothing I could do to help absolutely broke me even more than I had already felt. How could someone be so evil that they would kill an innocent child?
I stood there helplessly as Lily finally put Harry into his crib and refused time and time again to get out of the way. His offer to spare her life for Harry's would not get her to budge. That's my wife, the protector. But in the end the green light of the killing curse came to my eyes as she collapsed onto the floor by my feet and tears filled me.
"No." Is all I'm able to get out while she laid there motionless. Then the horrible sound of Voldemort laughing brought me back to reality and I watched him walk over to my only child crying in his crib.
"At last." His voice was so deep, yet so high pitched that it hurt my ears. "The boy who has been named to ruin my plans will be no more."
My first instinct was to run in front of Harry and shield him from the danger that was threatening to hurt him. But of course being just a ghost I was not able to do more than watch the green light of the spell pass right through me and head towards Harry. For a split second my heart sank as I thought I was about to see my sons dead body in his bed. Instead, the spell came right back and hit Voldemort and he vanished. Shock came to me while I watched my crying boy in his bed, looking at his mother for what seemed to be help. Then I heard a familiar voice.
"James."
I felt a chill go down my spine and I turn to see no one other than Lily. A smile came across my face so fast that I didn't hesitate to go to her and give her a hug.
"I thought I lost you." She says in my ear.
"As did I."
Harry's crying spread throughout the room so loudly that we just had to look at him in sadness.
"What do we do?" Lily asks me.
I just shrug. "There's nothing we can do now. We will have to hope that someone comes and finds him soon."
Someone did come to the house. But it was someone very unexpected. I watched as this thin and tall greasy black haired man in an all black cloak walked into my sons nursery and kneels down next to Lily. Sobs came from him and he scoops my wife up into his arms and hugs her. It's my old enemy from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Severus Snape. The Slytherin who gave me a run for my gallons as we competed for Lily to notice that we liked her. The same one who couldn't take care of himself half the time without Lily stepping in and then had the nerve to call her a Mudblood for being his only friend.
"What the devil is Snivillus doing here."
"James."
"What?"
"Be nice."
"Be nice?" I half yell. "He is a Death Eater. He should not be standing in this house. Let alone holding onto my wife like he actually gives a rats ass about what happened since he turned to the dark side."
"I'm so sorry." I hear Severus Snape mumble from under his breath. "I didn't mean for this to happen. You were supposed to be safe. He promised."
"If he actually thought Voldemort would keep a promise like that then he's crazier than I thought."
"Well we thought that Peter was trustworthy of being our secret keeper for this hideout since we feared that the Death Eaters would automatically think that it was Sirius. Yet here we are watching our dead body's because he failed to keep a promise too."
Then we hear a loud thumping sound on the stairs and a rumbling of the ground shaking.
"Hagrid?" I say as I look at Lily.
She nods. "Possibly. Who else would make the floor shake like that."
Then Snape jumped to his feet and disappears in a shimmer of nothingness just as our giant friend (literally a giant) Hagrid walks into the room. He looks around the room in awe for a few seconds, fear and concern on his face as the door was blasted on the floor next to Harry's crib. Then he spots Lily and his giant sobs fill the room. In no time he grabs Harry and walks out. We follow as he takes him downstairs and out of the house.
A motorcycle came into view a few seconds later and we see my best mate Sirius Black climbing off it. They are in a deep conversation about what happened and how Hagrid needs to take Harry back to the headmaster of Hogwarts school Dumbledore.
Sirius pleads and begs him to give Harry to him. "I'm his godfather. If anyone should take him it's me."
But Hagrid did not let up. He just shook his head and said he was sorry.
"Fine." Sirius says. "Then at least take my bike." He points to the motorcycle.
Hagrid nods in agreement and we watch him speed off in the night. Seconds later the bike is flying way in the sky and off to wherever Harry would be going to next.
