Chapter 6
She hadn't felt this afraid since she had faced Laurent in the woods while she was still human, the idea of her existence fading into black was a full possibility as a pair of clawed fingers dug into her shoulder causing her to scream, it burned like venom would burn and smoke lines appeared from the claw marks on her white marble skin.
She turned back to her assailant as the claws rigged into her and she held back her shocked scream. It was Jake, still mostly in his human form except for his dark yellow eyes, sharp claws and teeth.
Whatever was happening to Jake she knew she was to blame. He appeared to be stuck in the middle of his transition. But sooner or later he would phase and if he did she could seriously have some competition.
Until that moment, it had never occurred to her that the effects of her gift could be reversed. And the realization of it caused a deep wave of sorrow to overwhelm her.
She tried to move but he pinned her back to the floor.
She closed her eyes as the growl was terribly close to her neck. A piece of her was afraid but if she would have to die, she guessed it would be best if she died in the arms of an old friend.
She looked up at Jake's face, thinking about all the hope she had carried for the past few decades. How she wished for that adventure of wrapping her arms around him as he drove down the highway. How she wanted now more than ever the feeling of the cold air against her face and the warmth of his body inside his leather jacket. She could see it so well in her mind, how they would laugh and smile as they saw all the landmarks from the biggest ball of yarn to the Statue of Liberty.
But none of it was meant for her, she reminded herself. All those dreams were just dreams, she continued thinking before looking into his eyes, thinking to herself how much she had loved him in his human life and how much she had taken him for granted.
And then there were the Cullens. The happy sparkly family that she had never meant to hurt.
I deserve to die.
She looked into her dear friends face and whispered, "Do it."
Jake stopped growling instead his eyes registered sincere shock.
If it had been just a day before he would have had no second doubts to slash her throat and be done with it.
"Please, I deserve to die," she begged, seeing his reluctance. "Kill me."
She couldn't do this anymore. Couldn't be out in the world for eternity with all the guilt and all alone.
She closed her eyes and tears sprang through like a waterfall down her cheeks. Jake gasped. He pulled back. This was not expected. Vampires couldn't cry.
"I can't," he said, feeling confused.
Bella felt frustration form a knot in her throat. No, this had to be over, she couldn't do this anymore.
"Why not?" she screamed.
"Bella—I'm not going to end you. I just want answers and then you can leave this town and never turn back."
Exile. Didn't he know that that was worst than death?
She pushed him off her and stood up, no longer the pathetic creature she had been on that creek floor but instead something menacing and definitely not human. Her eyes were suddenly more vibrant and angry red.
"Do you know how many people I have killed?" she yelled. "I have killed thousands through the years. Small towns have disappeared overnight. And the worse part was I couldn't care to stop because the taste of blood made everything else not worth a second thought."
He shook his head as he watched the inkling of blood run down her arm. Did she realize what was happening to her, he asked himself. His heart began to pump rapidly in his chest.
Can it be possible? he asked himself.
"I can't," he finally answered.
She shook her head she was determined to convince him.
"Do you really want to know what happened to the Cullens?" she asked. She laughed and cried and laughed maniacally. And sank to her knees. "Oh God, Rosalie" she cried. "Esme, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." She kept repeating names and sobbing.
Jakes felt the pit of his stomach hurt.
"Bella what happened to them?"
