The word "new" got real tiresome real quick. New New New New New NEW new new new, some odd new york was where we were landing. If all this time travel was true(and I assumed for the time being that it was), humanity had to be given props for it's consistency. Albeit a bit redundant. (There was no Future Canada yet. They were probably smart and took a whole other planet for themselves).
I hobbled towards open doors to a place very different from Asheville. It was night; the city lights brightening up the horizon like too many christmas trees. I was never a huge fan of christmas, but I was rather fond of shining horizons. So this was okay with me.
"Welcome to the future of Humanity!" The Doctor announced, speaking with his hands. I stared blankly at the many city lights. Had I a photographic memory, I would have had an instant science-fiction backdrop to keep behind my eyelids. From the corner of my eye I watched the bow-tied time traveler. I could feel the resonating pride leaking from his face. Like a child showing off his homemade treehouse or sharing his secret not-so-secret clubhouse.
I leaned against the door frame of the TARDIS. With a huff, a small smirk, and a shake of my head. I took it all in. Or at least the best a human could do.
Usually, I held an upright disposition; full of self confidence and a sense of direction that fooled most 21st century civilians. But it was different here. I was plucked from my almost element and dropped into a bottle of spiked-fizzy beverage. With a flamboyant tweed puppy and an injured limb. I was still underaged for this I'm sure.
Yes. This was exactly the adventure I was looking for. (Please note my sarcasm. For it is an elusive creature at times).
I marinated in the scene for a long while. The Doctor became impatient.
"Well?" He asked. I turned to face him. Good lord he sounded as adorably happy as he looked. Those barely-there eyebrows rose high on his head with a closed lip smile. I smiled back, scoffing a little and raising an eyebrow of my own. They were much thicker and 'there' compared to his. I wondered for a moment if this made me more manly than him. This would be awkward as I was a female.
"Eye candy. I'll give you that." Was my response. With a pointing finger I addressed him deeper. "But are ethics still enact?" I wasn't actually looking for an answer to that. In the long run it wouldn't really affect me. I'd like to believe it still mattered.
The Doctor blinked. His face changed to an emotion I couldn't quite give a label to. Perhaps he was thinking.
Then he smiled again as if he nearly forgot what his face was doing.
"It's humanity." He stated in that older, weathered kind of tone. I could call this disposition 'Grandfather' with 95% confidence. "Give your species a little credit."
"My species?" I joked. "Who said I was human?"
He pulled out his sonic screwdriver, flicked it at me a moment and eyed it for another few seconds. He shook the device in his hand as it shrieked it's little sonic noise.
"Humans work jobs with their dads in cities like Asheville."
I grin a little bit and looked back at the science fiction environment in front of me.
"So do other species I'm sure… besides, Am I working right now?"
"Well-no. But you will be. Once we get that leg on the mend."
"Darn limbs." I muttered. The pain was creating a heartbeat in places where there should not be a beating heart. I moved only slightly, but hissed in pain seconds after
"I am a category of one, Doctor." I added with a grunt. "I associate with humanity, yes. But let my actions speak for me. Not the actions of those before or after."
He watched me and my words. I could tell he was simmering on them. I didn't expect my statement to be anymore original than the last human he had encountered (as I guessed he knew quite a few in his adventures).
"Action number… 4-er 5?" I thought aloud. "It would be wise for me to use some sort of wheel chair." I lifted my hurt leg up as best I could while resting all the weight on my other limb.
The doctor stood up a little more straight, shuffling his feet and fixing his bow tie.
"Yes. Good idea" He splurged excitably. "You need a nice set of wheels!"
He rushed off after reassuring me of his return. I only watched him a little bit before I turned away. There was no way I would remember which hall he sauntered off to or what exactly it was supposed to hold.
I stayed leaning against the door, listening to the comforting white noise of the TARDIS' engine. With a sigh, my face faded. Or I'm guessing it did. I wasn't really paying attention to my facial features while staring at the city beyond. A dread of over stimulation washed over me.
Wait a minute….What was I doing?
What was really happening?
It was like my life was some boring tangent that some writer got bored with and just decided to fudge it all for the sake of adventure and science fiction. Good Lord I hoped they weren't into romance.
I must have made a face of distain at that point I'm sure.
A loud clang made me jump. I turned to the direction of the noise. It was the hall the Doctor had entered. He was a clumsy physician, wasn't he?
Bah. I shouldn't care about all that anyway… I didn't care about leaving my everything for a time traveling doctor's appointment, right?
Who was I kidding? Of course I cared! I was the most logical person I knew! I was the one who would stay grounded when the begging question of a spontaneous road trip came up. I was the one who would make the tough decisions and ground everything to something useful.
This wasn't useful. Was it? Well it sort of was. But it wasn't at the same time.
What the heck, me?!
My heart felt heavy in my chest. The pounding in my leg rivaled that of my head and heart. Maybe I was loosing blood. I looked down. No major blood loss. Maybe I wasn't breathing. I took some deep breaths. Still breathing I suppose.
I hated panic with a passion. I swore I would never fall victim to it. Especially like this. What even was 'this'?
"There you go!" Came the Doctor's voice. "A nice set of wheels!" I looked at the Doc, hiding my surprise at his sudden entrance into the main room again. Beside him hovered a light, but comfortable looking chair. It was stream lined and futuristic as one would assume. But at the same time, I could see bits of grunge poking out of the design. All metallic grey, with black padding inside.
I put on a smile, wiping the sense of doubt off my face for the childish traveler.
"It's fantabulous!" I exclaimed, taking another subtle deep breath. I would be fine. I'm absolutely fantastic and yes all would be well. I could get my leg going and look! I get to ride in a fancy chair! I love fancy chairs.
Yes.
Everything is wonderful...
