Lee turned around when he heard his wife groaning about something that was obviously bothering her. He tried but failed miserable to stifle a laugh when he saw Dee trying to pull up her pants over her ever expanding belly. It was five months ago today that they found out they were going to be parents and it had been a roller coaster ride ever since.
The dreams she was having at the beginning of her pregnancy stopped after she started taking the nuerotin but they did stop right away. It took two weeks before the medicine started to work for Dee. Lee thought that Dee was going to lose her mind during those difficult weeks. The dreams had become longer, scarier, more detailed, and they all still ended the same way... with Lee's death.
After those first scary two weeks the medicine started to worked and both Lee and Dee had many nights of blissful dreamless sleep. But, even a dreamless sleep took it's toll on Dee. To have no dreams at all was quite the adjustment for her. She missed the escape and hope that her good dreams provided her from what seemed like an endless journey to find Earth.
With no dreams to contend with they were enjoying the joys of Dee's pregnancy. Lee remembered the first time he heard the babies heart beat. It was beating so fast it scared him. He thought something was wrong but Doc Cottle assured him more than once that it was a normal heart rate. Then there was the first pictures of the baby. Lee laughed at the memory because Dee came back to their quarters and showed him the picture from the sonogram and told him they were having a blob. He was sad he couldn't be there for the sonogram but they were down two pilots due to a training accident and he had to take the extra duty. Dee being Dee understood and told him to go and that there would be plenty of other firsts for him to experience. He didn't believe it but she was right and he was enjoying every single one of them.
Dee was still trying to put on her pants when she noticed her husband looking at her and smiling.
"Are you enjoying watching me struggle?" Dee asked.
"Yes, actually. You look so cute with your little belly sticking out." Lee said.
"Little belly? I feel like a whale and I'm only five months." Dee said then walked over to the mirror in their room.
"I look fat and ugly and did I mention fat." Dee said frowning at her reflection in the mirror.
Lee walked over to his wife and put his arms around her and smiled as he rubbed her stomach.
"You, Anastasia Adama, are not fat nor are you ugly. You are more beautiful now than when I first met you. I love you and this baby you're carrying." Lee said.
"We love you too. Don't we baby?" Dee said.
Then she felt it. A tiny little kick.
"Lee did you feel that?" Dee asked excitedly.
"No. What is it?" Lee asked.
Dee placed Lee's hand where she felt the baby kick but nothing happened. He was about to pull his hand away when Dee told him to wait.
"Hey little one. Daddy wants to feel you too. Show him you're there." Dee said to her belly.
The baby responded to Dee's voice and kicked right where Lee's hand was. He was amazed at the feeling.
"He's got a powerful kick." Lee said.
"He? You mean she." Dee said.
"No I mean he. That's a boy in there." Lee said.
"I beg to differ. I know I have a little girl in here. So don't be surprised daddy when a little girl comes out." Dee said.
Dee walked over to Lee's locker and took out a pair of his pants and put them on for now. She couldn't believe that she was now big enough to fit in a pair of his pants. She made a mental note to go to the Quarter Master for bigger uniforms.
"Well there's only one way to find out who's right." Dee said.
"I thought we were going to wait until the baby was born and be surprised. Now you want to know what we're having?" Lee asked.
"Yup. I have been thinking about it a lot Lee and I wanna know. Doc Cottle said we could find out on our next visit and that's in an hour. So please, can we find out?" Dee said.
Lee had to admit he had been wondering what they were having as well so what could it hurt.
"Sure. Anything you want. Now come on, you need to eat and we also have to go CIC to see if we got any word back from the Thera Sita today." Lee said.
"They're not going to answer. They haven't answered us for five months and frankly I'm tired of calling over to them. The nightmares have stopped thanks to the nuerotin and I haven't had any other problems so I say we stop calling them. As far as I'm concerned they can go frak themselves for not answering us." Dee said.
"Five months ago I might have agreed with you but now that your life and the baby's are at stake, I don't care how long I have to call them or what I have do to get them to answer. The only reason why I haven't had my dad send Starbuck and a few marines to go over to the ship and crack from some frak'n heads is because the medication Cottle gave you is working. But the moment I see that somethings not right with you and the baby all bets are off and there will be hell to pay for them not answering our calls sooner." Lee said.
"Lee, I don't think your father will send an assault team over their for just little ol' me." Dee said.
"Are you kidding me? He loves you. All I hear about when I go drop off my reports is how he can't wait to be a grandfather and how he's going to going to spoil our kid rotten. Then he says he wants to be called grandpa by the baby." Lee said rolling his eyes.
"Lee, you didn't laugh at your father when he said that did you? I think it's very nice that he is taking an active role in all of this." Dee said.
"I didn't laugh because my jaw was still on the floor from what he said. It was weird seeing the old man so...so..mushy." Lee said.
"Mushy?! Oh leave your father alone. He's a sweat heart and I'm sure that when a certain somebody holds their child for the first time they'll get all mushy too." Dee said.
"I don't know what you are talking about. Are you ready by the way?" Lee said trying to change the subject.
"Yes, I'm ready. Let's go and get disappointed by the Thera Sita." Dee said.
"You never know they might answer today." Lee said.
"Excuse me if I don't hold my breath." Dee said.
"Dee... remember... positive thoughts." Lee said.
"I'm having positive thoughts. I positively believe they will not answer us today. See positive." Dee said then opened the hatch door to leave.
"Oh you're a riot sweetheart. A real frak'n riot. Let's go before you use more of that sharp wit of yours." Lee said as he closed their hatch door.
When they arrived in CIC everyone was happy to see Dee and her every growing belly. Even Colonel Tighe managed a smile. Race Track and Sharon were also in CIC picking up some intel when they saw Dee. Soon all three were talking and squealing happily in ways that made all the guys cringe at once. Karl shook his head as he watched Sharon talk with Dee and compare notes on each other pregnancies.
"So you ready for fatherhood Lee?" Karl asked.
"I could lie and say yes. The truth is...I'm terrified. You and Sharon make it look so easy." Lee said.
"Easy? I don't know about that. There are days when Sharon and I feel like we don't have a clue about what were doing. When Hera drive us completely insane with crying and tantrums we wonder if the Gods chose the right parents for her. But you know for all those crazy times, there are ones that I wouldn't trade for anything. Like the first time I held her in my arms, the first time she called me da da, or the first hug she ever gave me. Those are the times Lee that make being a father the best job in the universe. I look at you and Dee and I see nothing but good things ahead for the both of you. If you or Dee need anything, and I mean anything, you can call on Sharon and I anytime. Day or night." Karl said.
"Thanks Karl. I really appreciate that." Lee said.
"Sure man. Are you and Dee here for the daily call?" Karl asked.
"Yeah. I hope our luck changes and they answer today." Lee said.
"Colonel, permission to have Mr. Gaeta call the Thera Sita?" Karl asked.
Colonel Tighe visibly bristled at the name Thera Sita. He was sick of those lousy Sagittarons not answering their hails. Everyday Galactica would call and everyday the Thera Sita wouldn't answer. In Tighe's eyes the Sagittarons were telling Galactica to quit calling and go straight to hell with your request. If the old man gave the word he would send some marines over there in heart beat. He may not let it show but Tighe knew very well that all the only family he had left was on this ship and if one of them was hurting then so was he. Tighe liked Dee and loved how she didn't take any crap from him, her husband, or Starbuck. If she had a problem then so did he and no one messes with his family.
"Permission granted." Tighe said turning to Gaeta who started hailing the Thera Sita. Tighe turned back to Lee who now had Dee standing next to him. "I have to tell you I'm gett'n pretty sick and tired of those frakers not answering us."
"I know how you feel sir. I wanted stop but Lee wants to keep trying." Dee said.
"Always the diplomat. Sometimes kid diplomacy don't work and that when that happens..."
"You send in a president." Laura said cutting Tighe off.
Laura walked over and gave both Lee and Dee a hug and shook Colonel Tighe's hand.
"Madame President. I didn't know you were here." Colonel Tighe said.
"I just arrived a few minutes ago. The Admiral explained the problems you've been having with the Thera Sita and I'm hoping maybe if they hear my voice they may want to talk. If talking directly to them won't work I'll reach out to their representative on the council and try to reason with them." Laura said.
"If that doesn't work then what?" Colonel Tighe asked.
"Then we'll send in the marines. If and only if diplomacy doesn't work and all other channels of communication have failed. I want answers for you two but I don't need any more internal strife for the fleet. In the mean time...how are you both?" Laura asked.
"Fine ma'am and we appreciate all you're doing for us." Lee said.
"It's the least I can do Lee. You've saved this fleet's ass more then once. I figured it owes you one. Now if you will excuse me I will join Mr. Gaeta's efforts and try to get the Thera Sita to answer us". Laura said.
Dee was about to say thank you when she felt a sharp pain in her back. It was so bad it made her wince and double over in pain. Lee looked over to Dee and quickly rushed over to her with Karl and Tighe right behind him.
"Dee, honey, you ok?" Lee asked.
"Yeah, I think I just need to sit down." Dee said.
Colonel Tighe quickly ordered the nearest person out of their seat so Dee could sit down.
When Dee sat down she felt the pain start to go away but then they came back more intense and sharper. She yelled out and grabbed Lee's hand.
"Oh gods Lee! Somethings wrong! Somethings wrong!" Dee yelled as the pain increased.
"We need a medic in here now!" Lee yelled.
Lee watched as his wife screamed out in intense pain.
"Where is the frak'n medic?! Dee, baby, just hold on. Hold on please." Lee pleaded.
Dee tried to answer Lee but the pain stole the words away from her. She felt the tears go down her face then another wave of pain hit her. She screamed out again from the pain. The last thing she heard before things went black was Lee begging her not to leave him. She then slipped into the peaceful painless black.
