"Shego?" Kim asked in alarm.
"Hello, Princess."
"What's going on?"
The green skinned woman grinned, "I'm asking you to dance, what'd you think was happening?"
"What? But you were talking to Daniel and you seemed to be having a good conversation and I was worried that you were going to fall for his bullshit again and I didn't want anything to happen to y-"
"I was talking to him about setting up this Masquerade. I'm paying him in cash, no other favors. Pure cash," Shego explained.
"But… why did you want him to set up a Masquerade?"
Shego rolled her eyes, "Seriously, Princess?"
Kim furrowed her brow.
"You know, for a supposedly smart girl, you're surprisingly dense."
The redhead was about to take offense to the statement when Shego suddenly pulled her onto the dance floor when the song changed. "We'll talk after this dance."
The hero was planning to protest, but the thought completely left her mind when Shego wrapped her arms around her.
Kim rested her head on the taller woman's shoulder and slowly melted into the dance. She hated how conflicted she was over it all. Everything about this situation told her that this was perfect, and that she loved it, but another part kept nagging at her telling her she shouldn't be doing this.
It was only when the song ended that the latter half seemed to muscle it's way to the forefront did she pull back from Shego and point to a booth saying, "We need to talk."
The villain took a deep breath and then followed the redhead to a table.
They sat across from each other and said nothing for the first few minutes.
Kim broke the silence. "This is confusing."
"What's confusing?"
"Whatever the hell it is we're doing. I don't even know what it is."
Shego frowned, "Well, what do you want to know?"
"First off, why the whole masquerade thing again? We did this already. That didn't end well, remember?" Kim asked.
"The first masquerade was an utter disaster. That's why we did this. I wanted it to turn out better this time. You know who I am, I know who you are. There's no anonymity here to confuse things. Also, my intentions are way more clear this time."
"I wouldn't say so, seeing as how I'm still confused," Kim said.
"Well, that's why I called you dense… but, seeing as how I want you to know my intentions, I think it's best if I just say them out now." Kim kept her mouth shut, waiting for Shego to continue. "I like you. As in I'd LIKE to date you. I've like you for a while now. Forget the whole masquerade thing. I liked you before then. Of course I wavered when the whole hot spring incident happened, but that didn't exactly stop me from liking you. I'm saying this flat out now because I'm getting mixed signals from you, and I don't want you getting them from me. I like you, Kim Possible. I would like to know how you feel because I need to know if I should just pretend all of this never happened, or if I have something to actually look forward to."
Kim sunk into her seat. Her cheeks were slightly red, but she knew she couldn't avoid answering, so there was no time to really get embarrassed. She had to think of her reply.
Licking her lips slowly, the redhead finally replied. "I like you Shego. I know it's more than I should, but I don't know how much I like you. I get jealous when you go near Daniel and I worry that you'll pick him over me. But… even though I know I think I'm starting to really fall for you, I don't think this can work. You're the villain, I'm the hero. It's not like we can just have a relationship when we're off duty and everything would be alright. You're always going to be the villain, and I'm always going to be the good guy. I want us to work out, I would love it, but I just don't think it will."
Shego pulled off her fedora and ran her fingers through her hair. "Right, the whole arch-enemy thing…" Shego chuckled slightly, "You know, I used to think about cleaning up my act, quitting the evil business and then possibly courting you. But you were with the buffoon at the time that I could've let my slate stay clean. The Lorwardian invasion was the perfect time for me to quit. My crimes were pardoned and I was still well off. But I didn't quit. I figured you'd never go for me. All our past history seemed to lead to us always fighting, even when I hadn't even done anything, like the first time Warmonga arrived on Earth. There was no way I could get you to think I was different, so I decided I might as well stay as what you expect me to be."
Kim frowned. "I didn't expect you to be anything like you are now. I know you were different as Ms. Go, and I thought you might be like her if we ever got along, but while of course we still share the same interests, you aren't the same. And… I think that's better. Ms. Go was like a sister to me, you're not. I like you way more than I should. I never thought I would, but after everything that's happened, I started to see you differently. But no matter how much I like you now, you're still bad, and I'm still good."
Shego smiled sadly, "Yeah. That was the one hurdle I didn't know what to do with tonight. I have too many crimes to my name right now, and while I'd gladly go good for you… I'm not going to spend years in prison. That's not how things work with me. I may vow to stop stealing and all that shit, but I won't serve time. Good chance I'll blow the prison sky high before I'm there longer than a week."
"So we can't do anything about us."
"Yeah… guess I was just hoping for one night," Shego sighed.
Kim smiled weakly, "Well, we can still aim for the one night… right?"
Shego couldn't help but smile at that, "Yeah, one night." She slid out of the booth and extended her hand. "Care for one last dance with the devil?"
The hero took her hand and smiled ruefully, "If only it wasn't the last."
