Princess Fantasy D X-2

A/N: I have never been inspired enough to write stories about any fanart before, until I saw the work of deviantart artist Skirtzzz, specifically her Final Fantasy Disney Dressphere series. With her blessing, this will be another part of a series of final scene rewrites, using the powers of the dresspheres to possibly change the script, or failing that, make the scene worthy of a Final Fantasy series. Replicating the feel for such an incredible franchise will be a challenge, but I swear I'll do my best!

If you haven't seen any of the movies or their endings, this could be a little spoilerific, but if you have or don't mind, hang on for the ride!

The Cursed Cosplayer

As the two frogs, the firefly and the alligator swam off into the bayou in search for their riverboat, the ancient voodoo queen Mama Odie stared out into the sunlight in their general direction. Chuckling to herself, she strolled back into her boat-treehouse, confident that everything would turn out alright.

"Hee hee, young folk these days," she tittered to herself, "always gettin' what they want and what they need all jumbled up." Her snake familiar, Juju, hissed in agreement. "Well, if they dig a little deeper, I'm sure everything will work out fine."

However, no sooner had she taken two steps into her home than a shiver suddenly ran down her spine, a cloud muted the sunlight streaming into her house, and she froze in her tracks. Within her ears, a distended voice echoed.

"Eh? Whaddya say?" she called, picking at her ear. "First my eyes, now my ears… I'm gettin' too old fer this. Say that again?"

"…Mambo Asogwe Odelle… we are in need of your skills…" Juju went completely still, as if sensing the words.

"… well, cover me in crawfish and call me étouffée," muttered Mama Odie after a moment. "I ain't been called that in ninety-seven years…" She reached down and Juju slithered into her hand.

Using the snake as a cane (which he was none too pleased about), she walked to her bubbling cauldron of gumbo and leaned over it. After a few tries, she found her cudgel-like coco macaque and started stirring, mumbling under her breath.

As the mixture swirled around, the ripples on its surface slowly merged together to form the vague outline of a snake curling up in a spiral, which then flickered with golden light. Although she couldn't see, Mama Odie could still feel the spiritual energies rising from the pot.

Then, the ripple snake slowly raised its head out of the surface of the gumbo and looked straight at Mama Odie with beady yellow eyes. Its mouth opened in a serpentine smile. "Well, good morning to you, Mama Odelle. It'ssss been sssso long ssssince we've lassst talked, hasssn't it?"

"Ninety-seven years by my count, Papa Damballa," Mama Odie replied smartly, "and it's Mama Odie now. That's what everyone else's been calling me."

The snake chuckled. "Ninety-sssseven years sssince you left the Big Easssy and moved into the bayou to retire. You sure did usss Loa proud as one of the besssst Voodoo Queenssss around."

After that, Papa Damballa's tone turned serious. "But thisss isssn't time for reminissscing. Ssssomething's happening in New Orleans… sssomething that could turn the entire sssscity into a graveyard overnight. And you can thank dear Dr. Duval Fassscilier for that."

At the name, Mama Odie let out a long-suffering sigh. "That Shadow Man's dove so deep in the shadows to get what he wants, he doesn't realize he's in too deep to climb out. But I shouldn't be surprised; the man never did learn to properly fear the shadows, only how to bargain with them." She sombrely stroked Juju's head.

Papa Damballa's snake form rose out of the gumbo enough to look Mama Odie in the face. "Indeed, and the good doctor may have finally made a bargain with the wrong shadow. He has sssstruck a deal with Kalfu."

The moment the snake spoke the name, a cloud seemed to cover the sun and all of the sound coming from the bayou outside stilled, as if cowed by the mention of that name. Juju felt a shiver go down his long spine, and even Mama Odie was taken off balance at that.

"Kalfu? Maitre Carrefour? Land sakes, Facilier's really stepped in it this time!" she lamented. "If the Shadow Man's got him messed up in his scheme, nothing good is going to come of it. Nothing at all!"

"I fear you are not wrong, Mama Odie," said Papa Damballa solemnly. "If it weren't for one of the baka Fassscilier frequently deals with being a sssservant of mine, we never would've found out his plan until it wasss too late."

"Apparently, the frog prince and his friend are a bigger part of the plan than we thought," the Loa went on, "by getting ssssome of the prinsssce's blood into a talisssman, Fassscilier has allowed an accomplisssce to take the form of the prinsssce himssself. Then, onsssce the accomplisssce is wed to the daughter of the local ssssugar baron, the Doctor will have accessss to his wealth by proxsssy, which he will take control of by ssssympathetically murdering the baron."

"And onsssce that happensss," Papa Damballa finished, "he will have the influencssse to conduct deals with the baka on a much larger sssscale, allowing Kalfu to exert his dark influence on the entire sssscity, until every ssssoul is pinned under his black thumb."

For the first time in almost a century, Mama Odie was stunned into silence by the scope of the plan. "All of New Orleans… trapped under Kalfu's shroud of cruelty and injustice… surely the Loa won't allow it."

"Indeed we will not," agreed Papa Damballa, "but assss per our lawssss, we cannot directly interfere with the mortal realm; even Kalfu issss resssstricted to exsssterting his power through bokorssss like Fassscilier. And right now, there issss only one perssson in New Orleanssss in possssition to sssstop the doctor."

"What, old Bayou Jeb?" snorted Mama Odie. "Oh, only thing that old coot's good for is tobacco puffing! He gave up dealing with shadows years ago, and he ain't half as sprightly as me, let alone little Duval!"

"… no, but as an old Houngan Assssogwe he sssstill has enough of a connection to the Loa for Legba, and that's enough for us to passsss on the messsssage to the one we have chossssen…"

"… the unintended victim of Fassscilier's curssse."

Mama Odie tilted her head. "Little Miss Froggy?"

The ripple snake nodded. "The sssspell cast on the princssse was sssspecially made for him, and when it was passsssed to Msss. Marshall, its energy has become unsssstable by cursssing ssssomeone it wasn't desssigned to cursssse. And, Legba thinks that if she were to take in a catalyssst of sssorts, he could possssibly give her the sssstrength needed to confront Fassscilier and sssstop him."

"And that is why I have come to you for assssissstance, Mama Odelle," the avatar of Papa Damballa rose up until it was nose to nose to the blind retired Mambo Asogwe. "I need from you, a gris-gris to help open one's earssss to the voices of the Loa."

The old voodoo queen looked nonplussed at the suggestion, but it quickly changed to a toothless smile. "Well, if old Papa Damballa says what the girl and this city needs is a new connection to the Loa, who is this old queen to say no?"

The snake gave a smile of its own. "I knew you wouldn't let ussss down, Mama Odie. Legba will have old Jeb waiting for the gris-gris as ssssooon as you're ready. I trust there will be no problemssss?"

"Oh, pshaw!" tutted Mama Odie. "I've only been out of practice for ninety-seven years; I haven't gone rusty yet, you old snake!" She flicked the watery snake on the snout, and it collapsed back into her pot of gumbo with a splash.

Papa Damballa's susurrus of a laugh echoed from the thick liquid. "Just checking, Mama, just checking." With that, the snake's ripply outline faded away and the glow from the pot dimmed.

The old lady chuckled, her overlarge earrings jingling. "Looks like Miss Froggy is gonna find what she needs after all. Oh, Juju!" The snake slithered around her waist and coiled itself around her neck. "Be a dear and get mama what she needs; I've got a lot of work to do."

The snake saluted and glided off amongst the shelves, picking out the ingredients and pulling them off the shelves, while Mama Odie raised her coco macaque cudgel, chuckling to herself.

The New Orleans cemetery was never a place anyone wanted to visit at night, especially a night like this. Even with the color and festivity of Mardi Gras coming from the town, the iron fence, random trees, and assorted crypts, shrines and tombstones still cast a grim and eerie air over the place, especially with the overcast skies and thunder and lightning crackling way off in the distance.

And it was this creepy place that a bead of light darted into, looking around.

Ray the Cajun firefly flitted past the many stone monuments, searching for the friend that had hopped away. They both had been taken aback at what they had seen at the Mardi Gras parade, but she had taken it harder than most.

And who could blame her, when she had seen the man she thought she loved about to marry someone else?

Soon, his light managed to catch a glimpse of her, sitting in the shadows of a crypt. Tiana Marshall, the woman who was drawn into this entire voodoo debacle by sheer happenstance and transformed against her will into a frog, had literally gone through a swampload of adventures to try and find a way to turn her and Prince Naveen back human, but the whole ordeal seemed to have taken its toll, and now all the spark seemed to have been drained out of her.

Tentatively, Ray flew up to her. "I know what we've seen with our eyes but... if we just go back there, we gonna find out your fairy tale come true."

"Just because you wish for something doesn't make it true," Ray had never heard Tiana sound so bitter. "I should've known better than to put faith in stupid stuff like wishes."

"Chère, come on, don't say it like that," Ray pleaded. "There's gotta be a reason for what we saw! We can't give up hope now! It's like my Evangeline always said to me ..." His eyes looked up to the sparkling ball of light in the sky.

"Evangeline is nothing but a star, Ray!" snapped Tiana. "A big ball of hot air a million miles from here!" She let out a breath, trying to retain her composure. "Open your eyes now… before you get hurt."

She likely would've said more, but suddenly, an elderly-sounding voice spoke calmly, "Oh, I don't know about that, dear; you can see your loved ones if you look close enough at the stars."

Tiana's head shot up, she and Ray looking around for the person who said that, but all they saw was a large floppy-eared dog crouching on the other side of the fence, looking up at them with round, moist eyes.

Tiana stared back in confusion. "Er… did you say something?"

The dog panted, but didn't respond. Instead, the voice, coming from around the corner, said, "Don't mind Portail, he doesn't talk much. But, little miss, I believe you have something to say, don't you?"

The tap-tap of a simple hook-topped cane was heard, as an old, stooped, dark-skinned man rounded the corner into view. His rather spindly frame was dressed simply in slacks, a red vest and long-sleeved shirt, and his wide-brimmed straw hat covered his face in shadow, aside from the smoke rings puffing from a corncob pipe.

When he got close enough, he pushed up his hat with one finger, revealing eyes that, although rheumy with age, still sparkled with life. "Well now, the Shadow Man sure did a number on you, didn't he, Ms. Tiana?" he commented.

Tiana was taken off guard by his words. "…what? How did you know…?"

"Sorry, I should've introduced myself," said the man, tipping his hat. "The name's Jebediah, but everyone calls me Bayou Jeb. And as for how I know you, being a retired voodoo priest in touch with Mama Odie has its advantages."

This brought Ray flitting closer. "Wait, Bayou Jeb? My gramma told me about you! Said something about you being Mama Odie's old partner, the voodoo houngan to her mambo! Where'd you been all these years?"

Bayou Jeb just chuckled. "You must be Raymond; Ms. Frannie's told me a lot about her grandson and his girl Evangeline. Keeps me and Portail entertained on my trips down the river."

However, Tiana was less than enthused. "More voodoo, that's just what I need! What's next, you're going to turn me into a tree so I at least don't have a heart to break?"

To his credit, Jeb just raised an eyebrow, but his wry smile never faltered. "My, my, Ms. Tiana, such hostility! I could've sworn that Eudora and James taught you better manners than that."

When he was met with Tiana's slightly gaping look, he gave another of his soft chuckles. "Now, don't look so shocked. Everyone in the neighbourhood knows of the best seamstress in New Orleans, her soldier husband, and her little girl with big dreams. 'Course, I'm not seen as much more than an eccentric tobacco seller, so people don't normally cross my path that often."

Tiana blinked, then let out a sigh. "I'm sorry, Mr. Jeb… It's just been a long few days. Losing my daddy's dream, then being dragged into this whole mess, made to believe in wishes, and then having that torn away too… I guess I just don't have much patience for magic any more."

"No, I understand, dear," replied Bayou Jeb, crouching down to her level, but with visible effort. He paused to groan and rub his back.

"Days like this I wish I aged like Mama Odie," he muttered, "why all she lost was her sight while I can barely walk is beyond me." The dog Portail rested his head on his lap, and he gratefully scratched the pooch under the ear. "Thanks boy. Now Ms. Tiana, why would you think that about magic and voodoo?"

" 'Cause all it brings us is grief when it tricks us into taking the easy way out," Tiana answered, her tone gradually becoming more bitter again. "I mean, look at us; Naveen wanted the easy life, made a deal with the Shadow Man, and he got turned into a frog. I wanted the money for Daddy's restaurant, kissed a frog prince, and I got turned into a frog! Then to get turned back, we go to Mama Odie, and all she gives us is some cockamamie advice on how to get out of this mess!"

Ray cringed at her words, while Bayou Jeb just raised his other eyebrow. "Cockamamie? How so?"

"Because her advice was for Naveen to kiss a princess, and then we'd both go back to normal!" said Tiana, aggravation at the man's serenity slowly overriding her bitterness. "But now he's up on that cake with Lottie about to marry her, and I'm… I'm…" Her voice trailed off.

Bayou Jeb's hands closed around his cane, and his smile grew larger. "Yes?"

"… still… a frog." Tiana looked down at her webbed hands and feet in confusion. "But… but how? Mama Odie said that when Naveen kissed Lottie, we'd both turn back human… was… was she lyi-"

"Now stop right there, miss," Jeb interrupted, blowing out a smoke ring as his grin vanished for a brief second. "Mama Odie may be many things, but a liar she ain't. Take it from me, if the Prince was turned back human by kissing that LaBouff girl, you would be too."

"Are you saying that Naveen… wasn't turned back human?" Tiana said, trying to wrap her head around the whole situation. "But if he wasn't, where is he? And who is up there with Lottie…"

She blinked, as a memory suddenly came back of her asking the exact same thing when she first met Naveen at the party. ' "If you're the Prince, then… who was that waltzing with Lottie on the dance floor?" '

"The impostor from before…" she realized. "But if he's up there… wouldn't Naveen be trying to stop them?"

"I'd think so too, chère," agreed Ray, "but if he's not…"

"He must be in trouble!" gasped Tiana. "We have to find him!" Both of them jumped up, but Jeb's words interrupted them.

"But are you sure you can find him and stop the wedding before midnight, all while keeping Dr. Facilier and his shadows at bay?"

Tiana only paused for a second. "I don't care about any of that! I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I did nothing to save him! I love him too much! I –" She almost choked when she realized what she had said.

Ray's grin threatened to split his face, while Portail panted happily. Bayou Jeb just gave his signature chuckle. "Well in that case, I guess I won't have to convince you any further to accept a little of Mama Odie's own voodoo."

At Tiana's confused gaze, he explained, reaching into his pocket. "It's something about voodoo and the Loa that you really have to live to understand. Facilier's lived his whole life chasing shadows, but even he has never fully understood the light side of voodoo. Mama Odie and myself on the other hand…" He brought out a small gris-gris bag sewn out of a pale-green fabric, "… our lives were literally built around it."

He untied the bag. "Most people only see the dark side of voodoo, and think it's all shadows, curses and bad luck. What they don't realize that communing with the Loa can also bless, strengthen and heal, and those that practice the light side and respect its power will benefit. How else do you think Mama Odie and I have lived for nearly two centuries?"

Slowly, he poured out a glittery white powder into his hand. "And if you're going up against the Shadow Man, you'll need some of this white voodoo. It's just something of Mama Odie's, and it will allow you to channel the powers of the Loa. It might just give you a fighting chance against him, his minions, and his spirit providers."

Tiana stared at the powder. "What sort of power?"

"That is up to the Loa you'll be channeling. But don't worry, they too believe that what Facilier is up to needs to be stopped, and will do all they can to assist you."

"But how do I know I can trust them? You heard what happened the last time I got involved with voodoo."

Jeb just smiled that wry smile. "That, my dear, is why you never give up on miracles; when it comes to the Loa, you just got to have faith that they'll come true, and if you do good, more often than not, they will."

Tiana still hesitated, but Ray interjected. "Chère, we don't have time to argue! If we don't get going lickety-split, your Lottie friend will be married to some crook, you and Naveen will be stuck as frogs forever, and this whole town will be in some deep mal pris! Even if ya lose all faith after this, just believe in wishes one more time!"

The transformed frog looked between her firefly companion, the powder and gris-gris in Bayou Jeb's hands, his dog Portail, and finally at the old houngan's face with the reassuring smile.

She bit her lip and closed her eyes. Ray was right. If there was any time to have faith in wishes, this was it.

"Alright, Bayou Jeb, I agree. Let's have that blessing, and let us go save my friends!"

"Now, that's what I want to hear," Jeb said, raising his palm in front of his mouth. "But I'll do you one better: I'll send you to the wedding is right now! Odds are, that impostor would want to keep the real one close and out of trouble. Good luck!"

He took a deep breath and blew, the powder blowing over Tiana and Ray's small forms in large streams. Both of them were lifted off the ground by the swirling dust, then in a small explosion of white, both of them had vanished from view.

To Charlotte LaBouff, this evening was literally a dream come true.

She was standing on top of a wedding cake float, in a pink wedding dress that felt like it was pulled from the pages of a storybook. Her father was standing beside her, dressed like a king and looking as proud as punch, while Prince Naveen stood before her, looking her in the eyes like she was the most beautiful thing in the world. She barely heard the presiding priest's words; she was so, so happy.

So it was understandable that she, nor anyone in attendance that was focused on the event, noticed the small explosion of white dust that appeared within the shadows of a nearby alleyway.

"Oh, my head… Ray, where are we?"

"Ugh… give me a moment, chère… I think that last trip blew out my butt…"

"Wait… I think I can see the wedding float! Come on, Ray; we've got to stop that impostor! Then we can find out where Naveen is!"

"Right behind you, girl, I'll – wait, when did you get so big?"

"I – what? Hey, when did you get so small? And what in the name of Heaven am I wearing?!"

"It… it must be the voodoo powers! Bayou Jeb said that the Loa chooses what power you have!"

"Well, are they choosing to just laugh at me? I look ridiculous! How am I supposed to save Naveen wearing this… wait…"

"What? Wait for what?"

"I… I don't know… but I think I know what I can do now… Ray, come here."

"What? Why?"

"I think I can give you a way to see voodoo magic, and it might be our only chance of finding Naveen in this chaos without the Shadow Man catching on to us before we find him."

"Well, why didn't you say so earlier, chère? Let's have it!"

"Alright. Yeux d'Ayizan – Frog Sensor!"

A moment later, Ray flew out of the alley, his eyes having taken on a shimmering quality. As he scanned the crowd below, he was amazed at how his vision had changed: although the raucousness of the Mardi Gras parade was still echoing in his ears, everything seemed to have had their colours muted, so that Ray was now seeing the entire street and everyone in it in grayscale.

But as Ray continued to look, he could see that not everything had lost its colour. Within the shadows of the crowd, formless blobs in an ominous deep blue pulsated and stretched, and the firefly shivered when a few of them briefly sprouted wicked grins and claws. Turning away from the hiding shadow beings, he turned next to a small streetside balcony alongside the church, and saw a literal bonfire of purple light in the shape of a thin human, staring at the main float. Ray swallowed a gulp when he realized exactly who he was looking at.

When he finally flew over the oversized wedding float, where the Prince Naveen impostor stood in real life, he instead saw a red outline of a short, squat human that looked too many years past his prime to be marrying the southern belle next to him. Shaking his head, Ray looked down, and his eyes lit up when he saw a humanoid shape outlined in green inside the shape of a chest, desperately beating against its inside trying to escape.

Quickly, Ray darted back down to Tiana. "I found him, chère! He's in a box on top of the float, next to that fake prince! And damn, that guy needs to go on a diet…"

"You found him?" Tiana exclaimed excitedly. "Great! But how are we going to get them down?" She looked out at the crowd. "Whatever tricks this getup has, I don't want to start slinging them around in front of everybody. We've got to find a way to get him out of sight!"

When she turned her head and laid eyes on the church, a light went on in her head. "Ray, you've got to try and free Naveen and get that impostor down here! If we can get him into the church, we'll have all the time to figure out how this whole mess started to begin with and stop it."

"Leave it to me!" Ray saluted. "But we'd better hurry; I think they've almost got to the 'I do's!"

While Ray zipped back out towards the float, Tiana slipped out of the alley and trotted towards the church. She paused at the doors, looking up at the structure, and quickly made the sign of the cross before ducking in.

Ray flew past the priest, who was by now saying something about 'forever holding your peace', and darted to the chest. "Hey, Cap! You okay in there?"

"Ray!" Naveen's voice was filled with relief. "Get me out of this box!"

"Give me a moment, cap! This is going to take some doing!" Ray flipped over and flew into the keyhole, prodding and pushing at the tumblers.

Outside, the priest was finishing his sermon, with no-one aware of what was going on at their feet. "Do you, Prince Naveen, take Ms. Charlotte to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live to live together after God's ordinance, in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love, honor, comfort, and cherish her from this day forward, forsaking all others, keeping only unto her for as long as you both shall live?"

With the prospect of Eli "Big Daddy" LaBouff's money so close, the impostor almost forgot to answer. "Oh, I do! Yes, I'm all for it."

Ignoring his slight eagerness, the priest continued, "Charlotte, do you take Prince Naveen to be your your lawfully wedded husband, to live together after God's ordinance, in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love, honor, comfort, and cherish him from this day forward, forsaking all others, keeping only unto him for as long as you both shall live?"

"Oh, I do," breathed Lottie, staring deeply into the man's eyes. Everyone's eyes were on the couple, which meant that none of them noticed the chest lid flipping open.

"And so, by the power vested in me by the state of Louisiana, I now pronounce you man and-"

"GYAAAH!" The priest's declaration was abruptly cut off by the transformed Naveen leaping onto the impostor's shoulder and yanking hard at the talisman hanging around his neck, as Ray flew up and flashed his glowing rear in his eyes. Staggering backwards, the fraudster toppled clear off the caketop, bounced down several tiers, and landed flat on the pavement, Naveen sprawling alongside him.

Seeing Naveen, the fake Prince seized him and sprung to his feet, even as Lottie called down to him, asking if he was alright. Before he could answer, a whisper of "Main de Shango – Gale Tongue" flitted past his ears, seconds before a long tendril that seemed to be made of solid air reached out and buffeted him backwards.

"Hate to do this, Lottie, but believe me, it's for your own good," murmured Tiana, before pulling the church doors open and ducking out of sight. The floundering fake Prince was yanked through the doors, carrying Naveen with him. Ignoring the outraged shriek from a certain balcony, Ray darted in after them, right as the doors shut on Lottie's outraged shrieks.

On the floor of the church, both Naveen and his doppelgänger skidded to a halt on their faces. This time though, Naveen recovered first and hopped rapidly away from the false prince. "Lawrence, why are you doing this?" he shouted in a panic. "What did I ever do to you?"

"What did you do to me?" shouted the impostor irately as he struggled to his feet. "You treat me like trash; like an insect; like a slave! You humiliate me at every opportunity, and you don't even notice it, when your mind is only on women and money! This, "sire", is what is known as payback!"

"Grâce d'Azaka – Frog Overgrow!" suddenly barked Tiana's voice, and a pink lash of energy materialized out of nowhere and wound its way around Lawrence's body. The next moment, the energy metamorphosed into a tangled mass of plant matter that left Lawrence tottering around on bound legs, before falling flat on his face.

"Tiana?" Naveen looked around. "What in the world was tha…" His voice trailed off when he caught sight of her.

In between the rearmost pews stood someone who was obviously human, but dressed in something completely out of place for a church: a full-body frog suit, sewn out of green and beige fabric, complete with webbed hands and feet and a full-on crafted frog head. But despite its looks, there was something about its colours, its shape and the way it stood upright that made Naveen recognize the person under it instantly.

"Tiana?" he cried. "How… how did you… did you break the spell? Then why…"

"Sorry, Naveen, the spell isn't broken," replied Tiana, her voice coming out clearly through the frog head, "just altered a bit by one of Mama Odie's friends and a bit of voodoo. I'm just stuck in a different form than you are. We'll still need that kiss, but this should make getting it a lot easier."

"But enough about that," she stepped forward to stand over Lawrence, "who is this and how is he looking like you?"

"That is Lawrence… my old servant," answered Naveen rather shamefully, "I… wasn't very nice to him, so… he's decided to take revenge by teaming up with the Shadow Man. He's got this amulet with my blood in it that makes him look like me." He glanced at Lawrence's, who was trying to regain his bearings. "I don't suppose I could make it better by saying sorry?"

The ex-servant was too dazed to reply.

"What, this doohickey?" Ray asked, lifting the talisman's thong around the impostor's neck. "Well then, let's just get it… ACK!" He was abruptly cut off and sent flying to one side, as Lawrence was roughly hauled upright by a laughing humanoid shadow on the wall.

Naveen and Tiana gasped as the tall, lanky form of the local voodoo bokor Dr. Duval Facilier stalked through an adjoining door, his lip curled in annoyance. "Well, well, isn't this a surprise," he said. "Who'd have guessed my plans would be foiled by the local workaholic, eh, Ms. Marshall?"

"Shadow Man," breathed Tiana.

"I must admit, I never expected you to find a way to change up that little curse of mine," commented Facilier, strolling into the room and twirling his cane. "Mama Odie and Bayou Jeb never did know when to keep their noses out of my business. Shame she's too far away and he's too old to do anything about it."

He slung an arm around Lawrence's shoulders, as his shadow reattached itself to his feet. "But it doesn't really matter now. Fact is, now that you know I have a stake in all this, I can't have you trying to stop that little wedding between the good prince and little Princess LaBouff, so you'll just have to stay here until its all over."

He put his fingers to his lips and whistled. From under the door, through the skylights, and every opening imaginable, shadow beings flowed into the room to completely blanket the walls, outlined by what little light there was flowing into the room and warbling with unholy noise.

For some reason, in her costume, Tiana didn't feel as afraid of them as she used to.

"Don't worry, my dear, they'll keep you company until its all over," continued Facilier, shooting a grim grin at Tiana. "Now, if you'd just hand over the little froggy prince, things won't have to turn ugly."

"Hey, stop talking about me like I'm some good to be traded!" cried Naveen indignantly.

Tiana's posture showed extreme agitation. "You know, Shadow Man, even if I didn't have a bone to pick with you for turning me into this, that's my best friend out there you're trying to marry that goon to, and there's no way in hell I'm letting that happen! And even if she wasn't and I don't care what happens to her, let me get one thing straight."

The frog head's fake eyes seemed to glint as she stared at Facilier, moving forward so that she was between him and Naveen. "Naveen is precious to me, more than anyone else I've ever known barring my parents. If you want his blood, you'll have to go through me."

Naveen stared up at Tiana, head spinning at her words. For once in his life, he was speechless.

Facilier's face turned ugly. "Then I guess we'll have to do things the hard way. Just know, girl, you brought this on yourself." Aiming his cane at the two of them, he commanded, "Restrain her, and bring him to me."

The shadows responded with a howl and surged for Tiana, Naveen and Ray, covering the floor around them with a sea of blackness. Clenching her fists, Tiana retaliated. "I'm not afraid of you anymore; not with the grace of the Loa on my side! Fureur d'Ogoun – Ember Tongue!" A blazing halo suddenly materialized around her head, and another long whip, this time forged of flames, erupted from her mouth. With a flick of her head, she skimmed it along the floor, its brightness forcing the shadow beings into retreat.

"Yeah, chère! Keep it up! We've got them on the run!" shouted Ray, rear bulb at full glow and ricocheting off the walls of the church, burning away the shadows with every flash.

Facilier's jaw dropped low enough to touch the floor at the sight, before he managed to regain composure. "The Loa… how did she gain their favor?" he uttered, pulling out a handful of magenta powder and taking a deep breath.

Naveen spotted the Shadow Man's actions just in time. "Tiana! Behind you!"

Tiana spun around right as Facilier blew the handful of powder at her. Quickly she shouted, "Coquille d'Agwé – Frog Veil!" and ducked as a blue light shone off her body to form a shimmering barrier in the shape of a seashell, the powder blowing off its surface in a billowing cloud.

Facilier's view of Tiana was briefly obscured, but when the smoke cleared, the frogsuit-wearing woman was nowhere to be seen. "What the – where'd she go?" he cried, looking around frantically, but it was only when he glanced up did he see Tiana, having jumped higher than any human should've been able to, come down straight at his face.

The voodoo sorcerer ducked just in time, leaving Tiana to land right next to him, but Facilier's relief was short-lived when she cocked one long leg. "And this is for the voodoo curse!" she snapped. "Colère d'Erzulie – Frog Strike!"

Her body whirled around, leg outstretched, and Facilier went flying from the devastating kick, crashing clear through the rearmost pews to land in a heap on the ground.

Naveen watched everything with a sense of awe, but a shuffling sound caught his attention, and turning around, he saw Lawrence trying to bunny-hop towards the front doors. "Oh no, you don't, Lawrence! Get back here!" he yelled, hopping after him.

Lawrence was almost to the door when Naveen landed on his neck, yanking furiously at the talisman. "No! Get off me! Get off me!" howled Lawrence, hopping back and forth to try and throw Naveen off, all while desperately trying to keep his balance.

Seeing the talisman in danger, a few surviving shadow beings made a beeline for the grappling man and frog, but Ray managed to see them in time. "Don't worry, cap; I got your back!" he shouted, shooting for the shadows and managing to disintegrate them just in time.

Just as Naveen managed to get a good grip on the talisman, the church doors suddenly flew open, and a familiar, pink-dressed, veil-wearing southern belle came flouncing in. "Prince Naveen?" Lottie called out, trying to see through the gloom as the doors shut behind her, "your shining bride is worried for you! Please come out and tell me every…thing's… all… right?"

Her last words trailed off into a squeak when she saw Naveen and Lawrence struggling, and both of them froze when they caught sight of her. At that point, the thong holding the talisman on broke and Naveen fell to the ground with it, and like pulling a valve, Lawrence instantly untransformed from a young, handsome foreigner to an old, fat, balding British man in an ill-fitting robe, still trussed up in vine, all right before Lottie's eyes.

Lottie just stood there, staring at the two of them, her mouth opening and closing like a fish as the blood drained from her face. Naveen, trying to be helpful, piped up, "I assure you, Ms. LaBouff, this isn't as bad as it looks."

And just like that, Lottie's eyes rolled back and she collapsed in a dead faint.

"Oh my, this can't be good," uttered Lawrence. Naveen glanced up at him, then gave him a kick on the thigh that toppled the man over like a felled tree.

Groaning, Facilier pulled himself from the splinters of the pews to see what had happened with Naveen and Lawrence, and seeing the frog with the talisman, his temper all but exploded. "No! All of you, get me that talisman!" With that, all the remaining shadows, including Facilier's own shadow, rushed like a tidal wave towards Naveen and his shadow on the back wall of the church, completely passing by Tiana.

Tiana gasped when she saw their target. "No! Naveen!" But before she could do anything about it, Facilier was upon her, snarling and swinging his cane. His first strike would've left a nasty welt on Tiana's head, even with the padding, if she hadn't ducked in time.

"I can't afford to fail here!" he shouted, coming after her again. "I'm too close to the payday of my dreams, and if I don't make it, I'm dead meat!"

"Back, you fiends! Back! Back!" Ray hollered, doing his best to stem the oncoming tide of darkness, but the shadows were too numerous and absolutely ravenous in their goal. Naveen let out a yelp as he was hauled into the air by his shadow, suspended by dozens of immaterial arms. Facilier's own shadow cackled as it yanked the talisman away from Naveen's struggling hand.

"Haha! Now we're cooking!" laughed Facilier in unison, as another thrust almost caught Tiana in the stomach. "Get him over here, boys; we'll be back in business soon!"

"Think… again!" Tiana shouted. "Beauté d'Ayida – Rainbow Tongue!" Another halo, this time one of vibrant, multicoloured light, appeared around her head, and Facilier found himself crumpling to his knees, trying to catch his breath, from a whiplash of solid, coruscating colors jabbing into his solar plexus.

Tiana withdrew her rainbow lash and flicked it out again, this time at the mass of shadows holding Naveen hostage. As the unearthly beings screamed and melted away from the light, Naveen landed back on the ground and hopped to Tiana's side.

"Tiana! The talisman! Up there!" he called, pointing upward. Tiana cast her eyes up to see Facilier's shadow flying across the ceiling, the talisman suspended in mid-air by its shadow. Pooling her remaining energy, the final strike of her rainbow lash was shot up at it, and although the shadow just barely avoided being incinerated, the rainbow struck its occupied hand and forced it to drop the amulet.

"I got it! I got it!" Ray vaporized two more shadow beings and shot for the falling talisman, and although he was dragged down by its weight, he managed to haul it all the way to Tiana, where she caught it.

"Thanks, Ray!" Tiana nodded, before clenching the clay bauble in her hand. "This thing has caused enough trouble!" She raised it above her head.

"No!" uttered Facilier, pulling out another handful of powder. This time, at such close range, he didn't miss.

Tiana gasped as the powder enveloped her entire body, lifting her off her feet. The next thing she knew, she was no longer in her frog suit fighting in the middle of a church, but instead was in a fancy white evening gown, feather boa and heels, and standing in the middle of a huge, picturesque dining hall, filled to bursting with people and patrons.

She couldn't suppress her gasp. It was her Place, her restaurant, just like she'd always dreamed it.

But as she looked around, she realized that both Ray and Naveen were nowhere to be seen. The only people around were patrons, employees, and a few musicians playing a piano and a ukelele, neither of which, she noticed sadly, was Naveen.

"Now ain't this a whole lot better than hopping around the bayou for the rest of your life?" Facilier suddenly said, and Tiana whirled around to see him seated at a table, sipping from a champagne glass.

"What did you do?" Tiana demanded. "Where is Naveen?"

Facilier didn't answer her question, instead getting up and drawing his deck of tarot cards. "Gotta hand it to you, Tiana; when you dream, you dream big. Just look at this place! It's gonna be the crown jewel of the Crescent City!" He fanned out his cards, and amongst them, Tiana could see her father's restaurant poster, that reminded him every day of his dream.

"And all you gotta do to make it a reality, is hand over that little old talisman of mine!" he finished, stretching out his hand.

"So all I'd have to do is throw away the dreams of everyone else?" Tiana responded, eyes narrowing. "You're out of your mind if you think I'd agree to that!"

"Come on now, darling; what gives them any right to have their dreams while you don't?" Facilier continued in his oily tone, throwing a ball of smoke in the air that resolved into Lottie's face. "Little Charlotte hasn't had to lift a finger in her life, yet with her daddy around, all she has to do is ask for something and she'll get it. Doesn't that rankle you that if she wanted your dream of owning this place, even with all your hard work, she'd be able to buy it out from under you with a snap of her fingers?"

"And what about Mr. Prince Naveen?" Facilier continued, Lottie's face flowing into Naveen's. "He told me his wish: he wants LaBouff's money to go back to his free life, wining, dancing, and wooing every girl he can get his hands on. Even if you did help him, once you did, he'd just as soon forget about you for the next girl on the street, even Ms. LaBouff herself."

Tiana's face had gone stony with that, but Facilier wasn't done yet, pulling open the drapes of a nearby window to reveal Tiana's old house. "And don't forget about your daddy. Oh yes, I know about old James's dream of owning a restaurant this size. Shame that all his life of double and triple shifts, earning every penny he could while working himself to the bone, never got his restaurant dream any further off the back porch."

"But you, Tiana," Facilier finished, almost whispering in her ear at this point, "You're so close to making his dream come true! Everything he ever wanted! Once I get what I need, with my help, you'll be back to normal and this whole place will be yours! It's as simple as that!"

Tiana had been silent for the last part of the voodoo sorcerer's spiel, when she suddenly closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Turning away from Facilier and the window, she asked, "Answer me something, Shadow Man. Do you know why the Loa gave me their favor?"

Now it was Facilier's turn to fall silent, stunned by the question.

"It's because I know exactly what I need, and what it means to get it the right way. If I just asked you and your voodoo plan for my Daddy's restaurant, maybe I would get it, but you know what? It would mean absolutely nothing without every ounce of love and effort that would only come by earning it with my bare hands, and it would mean even less if I trampled all the dreams of the people I love and care about to get it!"

She whirled around and fixed Facilier in a furious glare she couldn't give behind her frog head. "It's the work and effort that goes into a dream, and the love of people that help you get there, that makes it beautiful and worthwhile! That love is what my daddy had, what he needed! And knowing that, that's why I have the favor of the Loa, unlike you who only sees the dream and the easiest way to get there!"

Tiana's whole body started to sparkle with a pale green light, clenching the talisman so hard it might've cracked in her hand, as every part of the restaurant around them started to blur like the illusion it really was. "So I hope you'll excuse me, Doctor, when I tell you to take your offer and stick it where the sun don't shine! Esprit de Loco – Frog Purity!"

A wave of what appeared to be a mixture of bubbles and feathers exploded from Tiana's body, blowing back the bokor and washing away the illusion, leaving them back in the church and Tiana back in her frog suit. "Now, where was I?" she said, lifting the talisman and throwing it to the ground.

But just before she let go, she suddenly found her arm unable to move, and she turned around to see Facilier's shadow, struggling to both keep her arm still and pry the amulet loose from her hand. Before she could think of trying to throw it away, Facilier struggled upright and yelled furiously, "That does it! I'm through playing nice! Tear her apart if you have to, but get me that talisman!"

Like a horde of wasps, every surviving shadow piled onto Tiana's shadow, forcing her to her knees. The pressure put on her threatened to wrench her apart, and the pain was almost unbearable. Facilier pushed himself up and stormed towards her, cane raised…

… only to be intercepted by a still-transformed frog landing right on his face, pulling at his eyelids, ears and nose. "Stay away from her!" Naveen yelled, hanging on with all his might and trying to dodge Facilier's flailing hands.

"Hang on, Chère! I'm coming!" howled Ray, plunging at the mass of shadows holding Tiana hostage and burning away at their bodies. As their grip slowly lessened, Tiana managed to get one hand free and raise it into the air.

"Ray! Get over here!" she shouted. Ray turned around and dove right into Tiana's hand. Almost instantly, his light burned brighter than it had ever had before, as she shouted out her deadliest spell.

"Montée de Legba – Firefly Star!"

All at once, Ray's miniscule body turned into a corona of light, illuminating the church as bright as day, and it shot towards the shadows like an earthbound comet. This time, the shadows didn't even have time to scream or run before the intense light completely obliterated them, as Ray ricocheted off the walls to light up every corner of the church. Facilier screamed as the blinding magic seared his shadow, sending echoes of pain through his very soul.

"This can't be happening!" he wailed, finally managing to shake Naveen loose. "I had my friends backing me up! I even had Kalfu backing me up! How can I be beaten by a slimy frog, a bug and a girl in some stupid Mardi Gras frog outf-"

"Marque de Brigitte – Frog Cross!" barked Tiana, flicking a silvery cross from her webbed hand at the bokor that slapped over his mouth, sealing it shut at last. "That's enough out of you! And I have news for you, it's not slime; it's mucus!"

With that, she threw the talisman into the air, right into Ray's path. The energized firefly smashed right into it, and in an explosion of white and purple light, the voodoo amulet was shattered into a dozen pieces.

Dr. Facilier let out a muffled "NOOOOO!" as he saw his plan and his only means of paying back his debt almost literally go up in flames. He scrambled to the talisman's remains and tried to scoop them back together, but turned around in horror as offshoots of multicolored light from the explosion started to whip around through the air, focusing on one point. Then, from the midst of the point, a black spot blanked out the light and began to grow.

Tiana, Naveen and a slowly dimming Ray backed off in fright as an ugly, horned, demonic-looking mask emerged out of thin air, growing until it was twice the size of a man and almost filled the church's entrance hall. It turned green, glowing, baleful eyes on the trembling Facilier, who had fallen to his knees in panic, trying to explain his case in muffled mumbles. Slowly, its mouth began to open.

But suddenly, out of nowhere, a long golden chain suddenly flew into view and constricted around the mask, abruptly constricting it back to its original face-size. The chain locked itself with a conjured gold padlock, and the mask landed on the floor, pulsating in fury.

"Shame on you, Kalfu," a familiar, calm, but oddly resonant voice tsk-ed, and from a doorway on the other side of the hall, Bayou Jeb walked in, his cane supporting his frame and his eyes hidden by his hat. "Did you really think I or any of the other Loa would not notice if you appeared in the real world, inside a church of all places? Especially one devoted to St. Anthony?"

"Bayou Jeb?" said Tiana, stepping forward slowly. "What is going on…"

Jeb turned to her and lifted his hat, and everyone swallowed when they saw that his rheumy eyes were replaced by two bright, white orbs. "Not quite, Ms. Tiana. The name's Legba, Loa of Crossroads. I'm just borrowing Mr. Jebediah's body for a little while. He knows and he doesn't mind."

The three onlookers were speechless as they watched the old man, now walking with much more strength than before, walk over and pick up the trussed-up mask, as it trembled and growled at him. "Come on, brother of mine. I'm sure Papa Damballa would like a nice, long talk with you about that little deal you made with Duval here. And don't get me started on what the Baron wants to do with you; you know he hates people swiping souls away from Guinee, especially a whole cityful."

Straightening up, he flicked his cane into his hand and hooked Facilier around the neck as he tried to slip away. "Not so fast, Duval; I haven't forgotten about you. We Loa take the theft of souls very seriously. The day has come for you to pay the piper, and I know Baron Samedi would love to meet with you."

With that, he walked towards the door he came in, taking a suddenly unresisting Facilier and the Mask of Kalfu with him. But before he exited, he paused, turned back to Tiana and added, "Just so you know, Ms. Tiana, you were right about your reasons. A dream means nothing without the hard work to get there, and the support from your loved ones that keeps you on that path."

And with that, he rapped his fist on the doorway, opened the door and disappeared through it with Facilier, leaving them all alone in the church.

When Lottie finally regained consciousness, the first thing she saw, to her shock, was a giant frog head looking down at her. But before she could scream, Tiana's voice suddenly came out of the frog. "Lottie, calm down! It's me, Tiana!"

"Tia?" Lottie gasped, swallowing her scream and sitting up. "Oh, Tia, I'm so glad you're here!" She grabbed her best friend in a huge hug. "I just had the most awful dream; I dreamed I was having the greatest Mardi Gras wedding ever, but my prince ran away, and when I chased after him, he turned into some ugly old man, and then a frog said-"

"I assure you, Ms. LaBouff, this isn't as bad as it looks?"

"Yes! That's exactly what… it… said…" Lottie's face went pale again when she looked down and saw the large green frog looking up at her.

"Should I have said that there was a perfectly good explanation instead?" he asked.

Lottie's eyes went as wide as saucers, and she looked like she was going to faint again, but Tiana quickly got control of the situation. "No, no, Lottie, just hear us out! This is the real Prince Naveen of Maldonia!"

As predicted, Lottie perked up immediately. "Did you say Prince?"

"Yes, the real Prince Naveen!" answered Naveen. "The Shadow Man captured me, turned me into a frog, and used his power to turn his accomplice into me, all so he could marry you and get your father's riches!"

"But don't worry, Lottie; I talked to your dad and got that accomplice sorted out," Tiana said quickly, pointing outside. Lottie turned around to see Eli LaBouff watching Lawrence being shoved into a waiting police van.

"Anyway, I somehow got dragged into this mess and was turned into a frog too, but we have a way to get out of this!" Tiana continued. "If you kiss Naveen, we both will turn back human!"

Lottie's eyes lit up. "And then we'll get married and live happily every after?"

Tiana was about to say no, but Naveen spoke up first. "Yes, anything you want."

"What?" Tiana turned to Naveen in shock.

If possible, Lottie's smile grew even bigger, but Naveen wasn't finished. "But on one condition: once we do, you give Tiana all the money she requires for her restaurant. She needs it, or she might lose the building for good, and her dream will never come true."

"Whoa, whoa, hold on there, cap!" Ray interjected, flying up to him. "I get that you're doing this for Tiana, but what about you? You were about to propose to her; don't you love her?"

"That's why I have to do this, Ray!" answered Naveen. "I do love her, but this is the only way to get her her dream!" He turned back to Tiana, whose hands were clutching her cheeks in agitation. "I may mean a lot to her, but we both know her dream means a lot more to her than I do."

"… you're wrong, Naveen," Tiana murmured, causing Ray, Naveen and Lottie to look at her, surprised by how trembly her voice sounded. She reached over and picked up Naveen, holding her up to her false head. "Even if you did get me my dream… it wouldn't be complete… without you in it."

She took a deep breath, and said it out loud. "You mean just as much as my dream does to me. I love you, Naveen."

Naveen almost couldn't believe his ears, and a tentative grin spread across his face. "Warts and all?"

Even though he couldn't see her face, he knew that Tiana had a smile just as radiant. "Warts and all."

Lottie had never been as touched as she was at this very moment, and tears trickled down her sniffling, made-up face. "All my life, I read about true love and fairytales… and Tia, you found it!"

Reaching out, she took Naveen from her best friend. "I'll kiss him! For you, honey! No marriage required!"

"That's great and all, chère, but do you think you could hurry up? I don't think the night can wait much longer!" Ray called out, pointing up. Tiana glanced up, and saw that the big town clock was now reading 1 minute to midnight. Gasping, she took the initiative, and pressed Lottie and Naveen's puckering faces together.

The reaction was instantaneous. Light sparked from where their lips touched, and grew to the point where it lit up the entire inside of the church. Lottie and Naveen actually rose into the air as energy whipped around them, wrapping around the frog and hiding him from view.

At the same time, light flashed around the seam that connected Tiana's mascot head to the body, and the next moment, the head popped off the body, flew into the air, and exploded into a cloud of smoke. Sparkles materialized out of the smoke and rained down on everyone, as the remainder of Tiana's frog suit began to glow and flicker.

When all the lights finally died down and the energy faded, Naveen, now restored to his handsome human self and wearing a princely outfit in pale green, stood tall and still embracing Lottie. Glancing down at herself, Tiana gasped in delight when she saw her own human hands once again, clad in a beautiful green ballgown and carrying a strange card in her hand.

Slowly Naveen and Lottie separated, and the prince grinned widely when he looked down at himself. "I'm human! I'm human again! Thank you, Ms. Charlotte! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!" He seized Lottie in a huge hug, and a tearing Tiana moved forward to embrace both of them. Ray was somersaulting through the air in joy, tracing hearts in his excitement.

Lottie kept her dreamy, delighted expression on her face for a few moments, before coughing to get Naveen's attention. "I gotta say, sugar, I don't think I'll ever have another kiss as great as that… but I think there's someone else over here that deserves your kisses more than me, don't you?"

Naveen blinked, then smiled and turned to wrap Tiana in his arms, who eagerly reciprocated. Lottie extricated herself and stepped back to watch the happy couple, who'd gone through more than two days of life-changing events, now back to their old selves and together at last. It was enough to make her tear up again.

Ray leaned against the doorframe to watch his friends enjoy their happy moment, but a loud jazz trumpet solo broke him out of his reverie, and he turned around to see their other bayou friend Louis the alligator, dancing up the street while playing on his horn.

Spotting the firefly, he danced over, a huge reptilian grin on his face. "Ray, there you are! Man, this has been the greatest day of my life! A whole night of playing with the big boys… oh, I almost feel like I could cry–"

He suddenly cut himself off, when he looked into the church and saw a human Tiana and Naveen sharing the biggest kiss he'd ever seen, with a pretty southern belle looking on with utmost glee.

Louis blinked, then blinked again. "What the… what did I miss?"

Ray just laughed and set himself on Louis's large head. "Oh, brother, do I have a story to tell you tonight!"
