"Where's Padmé? Is she alright?"
He waits a beat before answering, he knew this question was coming - and dreaded it. As much as he despised Amidala, he cannot help but feel a twinge of regret at her passing. He knows what it will do to his volatile apprentice.
"I am sorry, Lord Vader. It would seem, in your anger, you killed her."
"No!" Vader denies it vehemently. "Impossible! She was alive, I felt it!"
Palpatine says nothing, all the answer that is necessary. The Dark barely gives him warning in time to shield himself from the explosion that follows. His gut wrenches at the overwhelming grief pouring into the Force, and he curses the evil chance that led to Vader's wife's death.
