Chapter 10

Kaiya sat on her bed and looked around the room that she hadn't seen for weeks. Her mattress felt hard and uncomfortable – not helped by the fact she had grown used to sleeping on anything Daichi could find in the Vice world. It was strange to be back in the Virtue world – the present world. Where everything was okay- for the time being. A gentle vibration on her bedside table made Kaiya pick up her phone to see who it was.

"Emma. What do you want?" she asked harshly.

"Kaiya – listen, I need to talk to you, about what happened before."

The teen clenched the phone in her hand. "That's all you've got to say. What you did to me and Daichi was unforgivable… Me and you are supposed to be family, but that didn't stop you doing what you did. Whilst we are back to talking, you can forget about putting me and him forwards for your stupid assessment to make sure that you get your promotion. Leave me and Lopmon out of this DATS stuff – we gave you the benefit of the doubt last time, and I think you know what went wrong there."

"I'm afraid it's not up to me, Kaiya… If you decide to walk away from DATS, then we have every right to remove Lopmon from your care and send her back."

Kaiya's eyes grew wide as she choked on the words she was hearing. She stared at Lopmon who was so busy surveying the view outside the window and looking at the estate below. At that moment, the teen plucked up the courage to say exactly what was on her mind. "You can forget DATS and you can forget about trying to take Lopmon from me."

Emma's voice switched was calm to severe. "And if that is your choice, then I will do exactly the same proposed action to Daichi. He can say bye bye to Terriermon."

"You wouldn't dare…" Kaiya stammered, wondering how far Emma would go in order to get her to work for DATS. "Leave Daichi out of it. This is between you and me. He's nothing to do with this – he was just caught up in everything last time and he is not going to be collateral damage this time either."

The phone line went dead and Kaiya refrained from throwing it across the room. Then the intercom buzzed. Someone was waiting for her. When Kaiya opened the door, she found one of the boys she had seen at the DATS headquarters standing outside.

"You're, Kaiya, right?" he asked calmly. "We met at the headquarters… I need your help."

Kaiya went to slowly shut the door, but the boy's hand and feet shot out to block the way. "Back off."

"I know about Emma – that she is your sister… She's the reason that you and Daichi went missing for two weeks-"

Kaiya frowned. "Four weeks. It doesn't matter what you know, because I'm not coming back to DATS." She smiled softly. "Next time you appear at someone's doorstep, it's best to start off with an introduction." She went to close the door completely.

"Ryan, my name is Ryan," he replied quietly, wondering why she was so against joining DATS. Seeing as he had no choice but to leave, Ryan started to walk away. He pulled his phone out his blazer pocket and dialled to Emma. "It's no use – she's adamant. This is going to be a lot harder to get her on your side."

"Not good enough Ryan – we need results. If you are to become a fully pledged DATS squad member, then you are going to have to get Kaiya on your side… Next time we speak, I want to hear good news from you." Emma hung up the phone without a moment's thought.

Ryan wasn't sure what to next. He glanced up at the block of flats where Kaiya lived. That's when he saw her looking back down at him. Without saying a word, Ryan coolly waved goodbye before stuffing his hands in his pockets and striding off the estate. In his mind, he hoped that Kaiya would come down and follow him. That would certainly help to seal the deal on his place in the DATS team.

He didn't agree with Emma's methods to get him- and Kaiya to cooperate. Deep down, Ryan had a feeling that there was more to her than met the eyes.

"Ryan!" a raspy and deep voice called out.

Dracomon was calling out to his human partner from his Digivice. It was killing both parties to have to endure he process of digitisation and realisation of the Digimon.

"Dracomon- what's up?"

The dinosaur like Digimon pressed his face up against the Digivice's screen in agitation, as if he could force his way through the screen with enough pressure to it.

"Let me out!"

"Not until we're home, Dracomon…" Ryan whispered, holding the device close to his mouth.

Out of nowhere, someone stepped out in front of Ryan. When Ryan looked up, he found himself looking at the boy who had helped rescue Relena – he was a Digidestined too.

"You… What are you doing hanging around Kaiya's estate?"

"Dai, I don't know what your deal is with Kaiya, but she's not really me type."

Ryan couldn't help but lie to Daichi – in all honesty, Kaiya was exactly his type of girl. She wasn't a complete girly girl who was into makeup and boy bands, but she wasn't a one of the guys girl. He may have only known her a couple of weeks, but her personality appeared so confident and bolt that Ryan got on really well with her. But with Daichi breathing down his neck, there was no way Ryan would be so obvious as to blurt out the truth. No, now was the time to start being smart.

Daichi nodded slowly. "There better not be – don't get in my way, Sampson. You'll regret it if you do, okay?"

Ryan rolled his eyes. "Yeah Daichi, you got it…"

The other boy heaved an irritated sigh and stormed off in a direction that went further from Kaiya's estate.

"Ryan!" Kaiya was running towards Ryan clutching her Digivice.

A soft light went on in Ryan's head as he saw her smile. "Kaiya- are you okay?"

She seemed a little flustered and nodded a little, appearing unable to keep eye contact with Ryan. "Yes, no- I'm okay… But you're right – I need to come and take this DATS test. It's the only way to resolve everything that's going on." Kaiya held out her hand. "Give me your phone."

"My phone?" Ryan stammered, putting his hand in his pocket to get at it. "Here."

"That's my number, you should ring me some time… and let me know when we have to take this test." Kaiya stepped forwards and hugged Ryan, wrapping her arms around his back. "Thank you…"

Another female voice called out to us. "Kaiya, there's a Digimon that's breached the barrier between our worlds."

Kaiya looked down at her Digivice. "Lopmon, where is it?" She rashly grabbed the teen's hand and started dragging him away, running quicker than the average. "Guess this will help decide whether I'm DATS material or not…"

Ryan called in the Digimon encounter and allowed Spencer Damon to guide him to the location. It was in the park under one of these antique bandstands. The Digimon was actually sleeping on top of the bandstand…

It was a large green Digimon that resembled one of the cactuses that Kaiya's sister loved to tend to. Apart from the fact that this one had chosen to accessorise with large red boxing gloves.

"Dracomon, realize!" Ryan called out, before looking at Kaiya in an encouraging way so that she would do the same.

She nodded slowly and released Lopmon from her Digivice. Lopmon was a soft chocolate brown with two long floppy ears that were almost as long as the little Digimon herself. She jumped at the sight of the large Digimon on the bandstand and hid behind her human partner's leg.

"Ryan, what do we do now?" Kaiya squeaked, squeezing Ryan's arm.

"We can fight and deal with it ourselves, or we can wait for someone to come and sort it out…"

Out of nowhere, a series of weapons clicked from behind Kaiya and Ryan. As they turned slowly, they were facing a line of soldiers. They were wearing all black with white letters stamped onto the right chest pocket. DATS.

"Ryan?" Kaiya asked again, seeking reassurance from him.

"Nobody move!" one of the soldiers called out.

Because this one soldier was a complete idiot, the Digimon woke up and slammed down onto the grass, creating two small crater like indentations.

"How about a Needle Spray?!"

Thoughts from AspiringWriterGirl = Another chapter completely, I had you enjoyed this one, or at least understood what was going on!
