A/N1: To go along with season 4 starting up, heres the next chapter. Team WRNG's future members meet, and Wraith/Midas sees some familiar faces.
Chapter 2: The Arrival
As the first rays of the morning sun approached, announcing the arrival of dawn over Shadow Fall City, a single young man finished packing his bags. He'd done so many times before, packing and repacking in preparation for this day, but now that it had finally come its weight felt quite heavy.
"So you're really going through with this huh?" Jack Varric asked his little brother, as he leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. Wraith gazed back at his foster brother with a "new" conflicted look. "Yeah I suppose I am?" The white haired man said, before looking at his reflection in his dressers mirror.
Very amused by this new side of his brother, Jack walked over besides him; "Honestly bro, I know it's just to find the rest of your little keys. But I'd be lying if I didn't say "normal" looks good on you." Saying with a laugh, before he tussled Wraith's hair to lighten the mood up.
"Knock it off man, you know I hate when you do that, I'm not a kid anymore!" Wraith yelled at his brother with a slight blush, before smacking his hand away. "This is serious I'm not going to beacon for fun, the last thing I want to be is like those other "drones". This is just going to be another job for me no more no less…even if the thought of going under cover this long puts a knot in my stomach.? He said with a fire burning in his eyes, this wasn't about being "normal" it was about finally getting everything he wanted. Staring deeply at his masks reflection in the mirror.
Jack let out a single deep sigh, before bringing his hand in for a face palm. "Look I get it Wraith, your old man was a hunter and you hate anything that reminds you of him. But I'm telling you don't look at this as just another job, try seeing it more for like it is; a new chapter in your life. Try to live a little make some friends, this life's too short to isolate yourself forever." He said in a caring tone, to his stubborn little brother, before taking his mask off to look him face to face in the eyes. "Who knows when you let your guard down, you might just be surprised at how much fun you'll have. Just trust your big brother on this one huh?" Jack smiled at his precious little brother, still chuckling slightly from Wraith never realizing, he was generally nervous about starting school.
"I told you never to talk about him around me, I'm not going to be like him and spend my life in his arrogant shadow. I'm better then he'd ever been, I am my own person." Wraith said before putting his mask back on, clear anger from the mention of his father resonating with his every word. "That you are, but your also my crazy little brother to "big" guy. And I'm never going to stop nagging about wanting better for you. It just comes with the job heh" his brother said, before getting him in a headlock and a playful noogie.
"God again with this man, what did I just say!" Wraith said with a smile while struggling to get free. Both young men's laughter echoing off the rooms walls, as he did. Neither one knowing of the long series of good and heartbreaking times approaching the younger brother.
After saying his goodbyes to his brother, Wraith had left for the pick-up point of the airship bound for Beacon Academy. As he walked aboard Jack's words still rang true in the depths of his mind "This life's too short, to isolate yourself forever." Just thinking about those them annoyed him greatly, because deep down he knew they were true. He'd never really thought about it, but besides Jack he didn't have anyone else he cared about…well there was Yang, but it's been almost a year since they last spoke, so whatever they were was on hold for now.
"What does he know, I've gotten by just fine on my own, friends are just extra baggage to hold you down in life" Wraith thought to himself, as he sat down on a window seat on the ships view deck. Watching all the little "Drones" climb aboard ready to start all their "little" adventures. Getting ready for a long ride across the kingdom, he laid down with a book and took a nap. His own misgivings about this whole mission, fading away as his mind drifted off into slumber.
Gabriel still couldn't believe he was doing this, after spending all that time clawing his way to the top he threw it all away…but try as he might, he just couldn't get that man's words out of his head. "You still don't know what a hero really is". It infuriated him to his very core, how dare he look down on him, and then challenge him to "earn" his spot at Beacon. His pride demanded he prove that man wrong, and that's just what he'd done, when he blazed through the entrance exams for Beacon and got accepted.
Not only had he "earned" his spot at the Academy, he'd done so in the top five applicants, right beside his rival Pyrrha Nikos. "Just you wait old man, I'm going to show you were wrong about me, I am a hero!" The spirited young warrior, thought as he watched the ship take off from the viewing deck. As he did he noticed a white haired boy glare at him across the room, and in that instant both young men thought the exact same thing; "I don't like that guy."
"Looks like he's not a fan, oh well it's a big school we'll probably never see each other again. I've got better things then worrying about that punk." Gabriel thought after shrugging off Wraith's glare, before he being bombarded with a swarm of his fans in the ship.
"Your awesome Gabriel…I loved your last fight…it's so cool you're going to the same school as me…can I get your autograph!" God he loved being famous, he knew that was probably a bit arrogant, but he also didn't care to much either. If people liked seeming him fight and win all the time, who was he to stop them, it only helped spread his name out there more. "Yes now girls theirs enough of me to go around, everyone will get autograph or a picture you name it?"
After several group photos and autographs, Gabriel finally was able to sneak away for a certain meet and greet he'd set up. "Ah your still here, I hope it wasn't too long a wait? But you know how it is right Nikos?" he said with his best fake smile, to the girl with flowing red hair in bronze armor. "No I've learned not to expect much from you Azure, now what is this about?" Pyrrha said with a look of pure annoyance at her "self-proclaimed" rival.
Gabriel's grin momentarily dropped away from Nikos remark, before he regained his composure "Oh now that's cold Nikos, I just wanted to congratulate you on also making it into the top five spots for Beacon, like I did" extending his hand out for her to shake. "Perhaps that was a bit blunt, but I just want to portray that I'm not buying your act. If you want to be real with me then, I'll talk?" She said after taking Gabriel's hand in the shake, his grin disappearing for good this time.
With a slight chuckle, the blue haired young man pulled his hand back, "Quick and to the point as always I see, never could fool you. I really wanted to tell you, I'm finally going to knock you off that pedestal Nikos. Us going to the same academy is the perfect chance to end our little back and forth, don't you think?" Pyrrha just sighed and looked away from Gabriel for a few moments. "Why do you have to obsess so much over this Gabriel, I beat you a few times when we were kids, and you've been like this ever since. Why is being number no. 1 so important to you?"
Silence fell over the two, before Gabriel slowly took his sunglasses off, and looked straight at Pyrrha with a deathly serious gaze. "I wouldn't expect the "genius" with her perfect little life to understand, how could you everything is just so easy for you? But I'm done being second best in your shadow. I'm going to show the world, hard work trumps natural born talent like yours every time. Then when I'm done they'll never forget the name; "Gabriel the Hero". And it all starts this semester." He said to the stunned red head, before sliding his glasses back on and walking away.
Wanting desperately to say something anything to him, but finding no words good enough Pyrrha just watched the blue haired man stomp away. "Gabriel…why can't you see that you've never been in my shadow or second best? Why wasn't my friendship ever enough for you..." the lone red head thought, as she remembered better times, and a friendship she'd do anything to have back.
"Well it is officially too late to turn back now, welcome to the rest of your life Nova? I wonder if dad will ever return my calls, or did I burn that bridge now?" Nova Scarlet thought to herself as she stared out into the endless expanse of clouds in front of her, her recent act of rebellion still plaguing her.
Even weeks after her debut concert as "Super Nova", Mr. Ozpin's words had stuck with Nova. They really forced her to take a long hard gaze at herself in the mirror, was this the path she wanted to walk down? Was Atlas and a military career like her family expected really what would make her happy…it wasn't. Which is why she couldn't fill the Beacon application out fast enough, and send it. When she received her acceptance letter, it felt like the whole world was opening up for her…unsurprisingly though her father wasn't at all happy about her decision. They argued for days back and forth, "If you want to go then just leave!" still rung in her ears. She'd spent her whole life being told there was a plan for her, and that she was meant for bigger things. It took her resolve years to reach this point, but she was taking back control of her life…regardless of the rocky road ahead of her. She was done letting others decide for her.
With a renewed sense of pride in herself, the young red haired girl turned away to find a place to practice and clear her mind. "Oh I'm so sorry, I thought this room was empty. I was just going to practice, but I can try and find somewhere else?" she very apologetically said to a tall girl with black hair, after she'd walked into a waiting room on the second story. "…No don't mind me, go right ahead. You won't find much luck with free space on this cramped little ship anyway." The mysterious black haired girl said to her new guest, before gesturing to the other side of the small room for her to sit.
Happy that she'd been given the ok to let loose and practice, Nova galloped over to her seat and started unpacking her guitar. "Thanks I'll take you up on that offer, I've been dying to play for a while. It's been…rough these last few days. But that's not your problem, my names Nova Scarlet." Nova with a great big smile said to her new acquaintance after she got herself all set up. "…I'm Blake Belladonna, sorry to hear about your hard time I hope it gets better for you Nova?"
"Thanks Miss Belladonna that means a lot, in fact how about I return the favor, have any requests for a song?" Nova with a shine in her eyes said to Blake, while doing a few quick guitar strings. "Well alright I don't see why not, how about a calming melody to match my reading?" The raven haired girl said to Nova who nodded in acknowledgement, "You got it, one relaxing song coming at you…"
One life,
Is not a long time,
When you're waiting,
For a small sign.
Patience,
Is hard to find.
Shadows,
Seem to fill your life.
Don't be disappointed,
Don't let your heart break.
Don't spend another minute,
In this way.
It's okay.
Dry your eyes now, baby;
Broken wings won't hold you down.
You'll take flight soon, baby.
You'll be lifted up,
And you'll be there
Twelve hours,
Is a long night.
When you're searching,
With no hope in sight.
Aimless,
On the inside;
And the damage,
Makes you want to hide.
I know that it seems pointless,
I know that it feels fake.
I know you can't stand the thought of,
Being stray,
One more day.
Dry your eyes now, baby;
Broken wings won't hold you down.
You'll take flight soon, baby.
You'll be lifted up,
And you'll be there.
"Oh man I just barely made it on in time, why did mom have to stall me with all those pictures. Ah whatever the point is I made it, I have arrived…well sort of the air ship is still like an hour or two away from Beacon, but close enough!" The plucky spirited young Ray Luna proclaimed after she hopped aboard the transport ship, ready to take on whatever her new school life had for her…she wanted it to involve finding her new best gal pal. "Time to turn that page Ray, you've gotten into your dream academy, which means your super awesome school days are about to begin. Oooohhh I really hope I met a bunch of people with cool weapons, of course they still won't be as amazing as you two babies" she thought as she rubbed her two twin crossbows on her face for a few seconds.
Ray still wasn't entirely sure what she wanted to do with her life. But when she got accepted into Beacon last month she decided to be excited about it, instead of letting her fears drag her down. Once she had taken that time to come down for air, it had been amazing. She'd blazed through the rest of her junior school, and spent days talking with her mom about the must see spots at the academy and the town. It all came together in what she liked to call "Mom's guide to amazing Beacon Academy years."
It was a long flight to Beacon, but it flew by for Ray as she spent every second just exploring the air ship, and introducing herself to the other students. She was determined to make the most out of every moment, so she could start crossing things off in her guide to do list. No.1 being make some new friends, preferably a girl sense they'd be easier to have stuff in come in. Ray never really had much male friends anyway, it was just easier for her to talk with other girls…Despite this she quickly realized something, "That's weird no one wants to talk with me, could mom's advice have been wrong?" she said while pacing back and forth in place in thought. She just couldn't understand why no one would want to speak with her, she's awesome maybe they were just shy? "Yeah I'm sure that's it, I'm just to unapproachable."
"Or maybe it's because your bouncing off the walls everywhere, and they just want to take things slowly?" Wraith said from across the room to Ray, having been awoken from his nap by her constant greetings, and dashing back and forth.
Now Ray was a bit shocked at this mainly, because she'd completely forgotten that white haired guy had been back there the whole time. But he was the only one who'd actually talked back to her longer than a few seconds, "Ok fine baby steps."
"Well hello to you too sleepy head, and thanks I'll try and keep that in mind for after we land. My names Ray Luna by the way what's yours…hey don't do that!" Ray said with her best improvised smile to Wraith, who just shrugged it off and slide his book back over his eyes. Thinking quickly Ray took the book off, to keep the mystery boy awake to speak with.
"I just had to say something, this is what I get for following your dumb advice bro." Wraith thought after it became clear Ray wasn't going to let him nap any longer. "Your welcome Miss Luna, my names Wraith Varric now how can I help you?" the annoyed white haired man said with a slight of disinterest. "That's a cool name very mysterious, I just wanted to chat with you help pass the time. It couldn't hurt right? I mean we're almost there anyway." Ray said before sliding right next to Wraith, determined to get a full conversation out of him if it killed her.
"Well I think we both know; you won't be taking no as an answer will you? Fine I'll indulge you, now how about you champ care to join in as well?" Wraith said to Ray before leaning past her at a young blonde haired man, who appeared to be having quite the battle with motion sickness a few seats away from them. He'd noticed him on the way in, he looked "different" Wraith gave him that, but after the basic look over quickly forgot about him. "Ah sure maybe ta…talking with you guys will easy my…stomach. My names Jaune Arc by the by." Jaune struggled to say to the pair in front of him, while trying not to embarrass himself anymore then he'd already had.
Delighted that she'd now gotten two people to talk with her Ray let out a slight giggle, before shaking it off and trying to look cool. "It's very nice to meet you Jaune, I'm Ray and he's Wraith, so you got into Beacon to huh? Well obviously since your on the ship with us, but you know what I mean." Ray generically proclaimed to he two boys as the airship cut through the clouds. Revealing at long last Beacon Academy in all its glory just off in the distance.
Doing his best not to hurl, Jaune looked out the window at the academy. "Y…yeah it's…great, actually it feels unreal to be honest. But I'd say the family back home is even more excited for me it then I am. What about you guys, any family?" he said after turning his gaze back at the two. "Yeah actually my parent's back home, you should have seen my dads face when I got accepted here it was hilarious. I'm kind of still new at the whole huntress thing, but beacons kind of been my dream school for awhile now. My parents first met there, and I really want to see their old stomping grounds." Ray said while clutching her guide book embarrassingly.
"Thats a nice story, i'm sure Beacon is the perfect place for you then since it runs in the family? Now how about you Wraith, any family or special reason for choosing this school?" Jaune asked Wraith who'd remained perfectly silent for a long time during the conversation.
"...I don't really have anyone besides an older brother, I left him back home in Shadow Fall City a few hours ago. I'm also afraid it's nothing to special I just have some business at Beacon, get in get ou...I mean I really want to be a hunter you guys, been a dream of mine since I was a kid...yeah." Wraith with as little interest as possible said to Jaune and Ray who hung on his every word.
"No way your from Shadow Fall City, thats so coo Mr. Varricl! I heard the way the moon reflects off the water during the night there is unreal, lights up the water and everything!" Ray said exploding with curiosity having heard rumors about from her friends back home. "Isn't it also known for that Shadow Hawks gang to though? That can't be very good for the city reputation?" Jaune said thinking out loud, until he was shushed by Ray. With a slight chuckle at that comment Wraith laughed, "If you believe the stories, but trust me even "if" such a gang was rooted in my city its hardly the worst thing. The city could be over run by white fang thugs instead, i'd say that a lot worse don't you think?" he said with a smug tone to Jaune...before hearing a familiar voice that seized his attention causing his head to shoot around at it's source; "I can't believe my baby sister's going to Beacon with me, this is the best day ever!" Yang said before giving her little sister Ruby a great big hug.
Wraith stood on the edge of his seat stiff like a statue, he did not plan for something like this happening. Was his cover going get blown. "Crap what's she doing here! Ok calm down, she's too busy with her sister to notice you, just don't make eye contact and your good!" he thought to himself trying to regain his cool, snags happen all the time with plans no need to get wrapped in them. If he just avoided talking with her at all costs, then he could slide under the radar for his hopefully brief stay at Beacon. "Hey Wraith are you alright, you don't look so good? Do you know those two girls or something?" Ray having noticed the clear tone shift with Wraith, asked after tracking his gaze over to Yang and Ruby. Whatever this was she could tell it was juicy, and she just had to know why. "Ah...no I've never seen her... them before in my life. My scar just lit up giving me a headache is all, it does that occasionally hahaha..." He said desperately before grasping his eye scar with his palm in a fact pain motion. He needed to calm the hell down right now, Ray not buying it for a second...however it was obviously from his concerned look that gullible Jaune did.
Luckily just in the nick of time to save Wraith from this situation, a hologram of what they all assumed was a teacher at Beacon appeared in the middle of the room. And began to play a recorded speech for the new students;
"Hello, and welcome to Beacon! My name is Glynda Goodwitch. You are among a privileged few who have received the honor of being selected to attend this prestigious academy! Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future Huntsmen and Huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it. You have demonstrated the courage needed for such a task, and now it is our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world."
"Well looks like it's just about time to land and get off isn't it? It's been interesting chatting with you two however brief it was, but I have to go get my things. So I bid you farewell, maybe we'll see each other again." Seizing an opportunity to get away from them and avoid Yang, Wraith said before he got up to leave. "Ok but I'm going to hold you to that Mister, I still wanna chat with you, who knows we might even get put in the same class?' Ray joked as Wraith slowly backed away, nodding with his best fake smile…Until just as he turned away from her, his eye glanced over at Yang and their gazes meet for the briefest of moments.
She recognized him immediately, Wraith saw it in her expression this was going to be a pain now. "Something up sis?" Ruby asked her big sister, after her face lit up for a few seconds when she looked away. "Nah it's nothing, just some guy I know i'll get to him later."
Thinking quick he ran as fast as he could away from the viewing deck. "Ok so she saw me, but as long as I don't give her the chance to talk I'll be fine. Can't afford any slip ups with my act…dammit stop smiling you are not glad to see her…argh!" Wraith thought to himself as he ran away from the front of the ship, until he collided with someone knocking them both over. "What the hell was that for your idiot, watch where you're going!" Gabriel said after he pulled himself back up in a rage, after had run straight into him.
"Whatever man just move; I need to get my stuff from the storage cart…I'm sorry do you need something else?" Wraith said after dusting himself off to leave before Gabriel grabbed his arm and pulled him back around towards him. "Apologize now." The tall blue haired man said tightening his grip on Wraiths arm. "No thanks I'm good, you were equally to blame for what just happened as I was. Of course if you want to apologize to me for wasting my time I'm game?" Wraith joked with a sarcastic grin, after ripping his arm to Gabriel's surprise out of his grip, just as the ship touched down. Both stubborn men staring daggers at each other as it did.
A/N2: Alright now this chapter was really just about establishing Wraith as a loner (like I said last chapter everyone in team WRGN have character flaws his is trust issues), and moving the plot along. Next chapter is going to be the fun one, when the teams are officially formed, and Wraith despite his best effort is confronted by Yang who knows he's faking his normal student act. Then of course is Blake whose going to set him right off. This time I just had Nova sing the song "Wings" from the actual series for fun. Also I'll be heavily revising the earlier white and yellow chapters to round out the edges so expect that.
