Chapter Ten
Prentiss was ready to throw in the towel, because honestly, this case was just getting more and more ridiculous. She was over the whole 'vampires are real' thing. That was old news. Morgan and Rein bursting through the doors and hollering about a magic box, a blond college girl that could kill vampires and vampire ashes? Eh. At this point, she could take it. Reid telling everyone they should drop the case and fly back to the base? Prentiss had looked out the window, watching carefully for any flying pigs.
It was an unsaid truth that the worst thing that could happen in the BAU, besides dying, seeing someone die and finding out that someone died, was not being able to close a case. Everyone agreed, from the management who never left the office to the janitor that had to clean the garbage. It meant there was still a killer on the loose, innocents were still in danger and that their efforts had been absolutely useless. It didn't happen often, less than five times since Prentiss had been working there and each time, it took a few weeks of no information and a general consensus that they weren't helping. So when Reid told everyone that they should give up, Prentiss had been astounded.
"What are you talking about, Reid? You and Morgan just cracked this case wide open!" She exclaimed, glaring at her co-worker.
Everyone in the room mirrored her reaction. Hotch and JJ looked shocked, Rossi looked more confused than anything else, while Morgan looked angry.
"Reid, explanation," Hotch ordered sharply.
Reid looked down, "There's nothing we can do."
"There's always something we can do," Morgan muttered.
Rein glared at Morgan, "There will always be more vampires! We can't arrest them or kill them."
"We can't just let a whole town die!" Morgan replied angrily.
Jeez, Prentiss could practically see the tension between them. She had a sense that they were continuing an argument.
Just before Reid fired back, Rossi spoke up, "Calm down! Now, none of us want to leave this town with vampires killing them."
"We don't have a choice! We're useless here. They can't be killed by us," Reid said.
"Well I'm not leaving," Morgan stated, eyes challenging. Then, the phone rang. Everyone looked around for who to pick it up. As a general rule, the BAU wasn't supposed to answer. The officers who worked in Sunnydale were, but they weren't around. It continued to ring.
Prentiss walked towards the phone and picked it up, "Sunnydale P.D, how can we help you?"
"Hello, 9-1-1 operator here. We need an immediate dispatch to 177 Crescent Street. Reports of a dangerous group of people fighting," The operator stated.
Prentiss glanced around the room. Reid and Morgan were still arguing, but quieter so that the operator wouldn't hear them. Everyone's attention was fixed on them.
"Hello? Sunnydale PD, are you here?" The operator demanded.
Prentiss moved towards the phone and picked it up, "Sunnydale PD responding."
The operator breathed a sigh of relief, "Good, Sunnydale. I believe the crowd is armed with, uh, barbecue forks."
Prentiss groaned, this had to be a joke. She glanced up at her coworkers, "We'll be on the scene as fast as we can," She hung up. She took a deep breath before standing up.
Morgan was waving his arms in frustration as Reid sat in a chair, looking as calm as water, "We need to stay!"
"Hey!" Prentiss shouted. Everyone turned towards her. She took a deep breath, "A group of people are fighting."
Morgan stared at her incredulously, "That's a job for the police. We need to help the town with the vampires!"
"Listen!" Prentiss yelled. Morgan fell silent. "According to the operator, they're armed with barbecue forks."
Cue five pairs of dubious stares.
Hotch sighed, "Looks like we're not going yet. Everyone, get to the SUVs. Reid, we'll discuss further, but for now we're staying in Sunnydale."
The team divided into the two SUVs and drove to Crescent street at top speed. Prentiss was beyond sure that Morgan's driving wasn't safe, but considering the lack of police, she was pretty sure they'd be fine. They blew past houses, park and graveyards. Prentiss was sure she'd never seen that many graveyards in that small of a town. Finally, she spotted Crescent street, "There!" She exclaimed. Morgan drove until they hit 177.
Prentiss shook her head in disbelief, "This has to be a joke." Outside of the car was yet another graveyard, with a plaque reading 177 attached to the fence.
"Joke?" Morgan asked.
"Vampires, in a graveyard, at night. Isn't that a little too ridiculous?"
Morgan raised an eyebrow, "Tell that to the vampires." They jumped out of the car as the other SUV pulled up beside them.
Hotch followed them, "Alright. We go in, but stealth is our plan, understand? We only get involved if there's a civilian nearby. These vampires are powerful and we don't have any experience with them."
The team nodded in agreement, before they ran inside the graveyard. In the moon's dim light, Prentiss found it hard to figure out where was what. She had tripped over two small gravestones already, with bruises on her shins to show for it, but she kept advancing and Morgan himself had stubbed his toe. Finally, her ears perked up as she heard a noise. It sounded like a scream.
"Somethings in the direction of northwest!" She spoke into her walkie talkie. Morgan made eye contact with her and the two crept towards the sound. She held her gun steady as she got closer. There was definitely screams now, getting louder and louder with each step. She noticed Morgan speeding up, hitting more tombstones. She put a hand on his arm to slow him down. The last thing they needed was him falling and accidentally unloading his gun. Morgan pulled his arm away, annoyed, but he got the message. He proceeded at her speed.
Prentiss looked around for the other agents. No one was in sight. The separate pairs had spread pretty far before Prentiss heard the scream, so it wasn't unexpected. But still, she would have preferred the comfort of knowing she had five fully trained agents at her back, instead of just one.
They were so close that she could hear the fighting. A few trees blocked her view, but she knew the sound of punching and kicking well enough. Morgan tensed up. Prentiss froze behind a tree. Morgan was about to burst into a sprint, before Prentiss pulled him back.
"Wait for backup!" She whispered.
Morgan shot her an angry glance, "Someone could be getting hurt!"
"And if they're as strong as you say, they can break us in half without a thought!" She reminded him.
Morgan paused. Prentiss peaked out behind the tree. They were at least fifty meters away, but she could make out the fighters. There was at least seven of them. A mix of ages and genders, but they all seemed to be attacking the same person: a small blond girl. Didn't Morgan say her name was Buffy? She watched as they fought with inhuman strength, throwing each other across the graveyard and delivering powerful punches and kicks. But she could tell Buffy was loosing her ground and getting tired. More punches seems to make contact and she was steadily retreating backwards. She felt Morgan tense up again.
Prentiss had a bad feeling, "Morgan?"
"She needs help," He muttered.
"Morgan, stay here," Her voice was powerful.
Morgan stayed transfixed on the battle, "She won't last much longer."
"Don't you dare," Prentiss warned, fearfully.
Morgan looked back at her. She could see the desperation in his eyes, "Stay here, Prentiss. Wait for backup." Before she could say anything, Morgan was sprinting away. Prentiss inhaled sharply, pressing herself closer to the tree. Suddenly, she felt very alone.
She looked around for the other agents, only to realize that they weren't here. She clutched her bulletproof vest close to herself and steadied her gun, before peaking out of the tree again. Morgan was running full sprint towards the six vampires and Buffy. Then, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. A shiver ran up her spine. Prentiss froze.
Then, her neck felt like it was being ripped out. She let out a scream of pure terror as she felt pain like she'd never felt before. Cold arms with the strength of steel wrapped around her, pinning her arms to her body. She felt her gun drop to the ground as her fingers went cold. Her blood, she could feel her own blood, leaving her body, through her neck.
Distantly, she noticed Morgan pivot and stare in her direction. She watched as one of the vampires tackled him to the ground, pinning him there.
Prentiss' eye lids flickered. She felt herself collapsing into the creature's arms, loosing the ability to stand, all the while her neck burned with pain. She sight was getting hazy. She could see dimly see a fight taking place between Buffy and a vampire, but she couldn't see Morgan. Finally, she felt herself go limp in the vampire's arms. The pain in her neck continued, but Prentiss didn't have the strength to stand up anymore. She struggled to keep her eyes open, as she caught a last glimpse of Buffy throwing the vampire to the ground, before she fell unconscious.
Damn, it's been 3 years since this was first published! That's just amazing in my eyes, since I was such a different person back then. I'd like to thank everyone whose reading this for sticking with me and my horrible update schedule (It's been like 9 months since chapter 9. Sorry)
