Chapter 4: Fitting In

Even though Kurogane had prepared himself to face the formidable opponent, he was nevertheless surprised by the sheer appearance of the creature.

When the crate burst open, a monstrous beast of almost ten metres sprang out of the crate. Three ivory horns protruding out from the top of its head lurked menacing threatening any single person in front of it. Its whole body was covered in a silvery grey fur with enormous muscles which could be seen budging from beneath those fur. It was a miracle a creature of its size can fit into the small crate that had been holding it captive.

Its black eyes stared right at them like huge black holes, sucking all the surrounding light into its depths as though they were evaluating the both of them.

A hissing voice sounded deep from within the beast's throat as it turned its attention to the right of Kurogane.

It half sounded like a low growl and half like he was actually speaking... like it was calling Fai's name.. but he probably heard wrong.

Out of compulsion, Kurogane threw a slightly concerned glance at the blonde. Fai was too staring back at the beast, slowly, but definitely he took one step backwards then another.

A puff of smoke escaped from its nostrils as the pair of jet black eyes locked fast upon the blonde's.

At the sight of the blonde's reaction, all concern flew out into thin air as urgency and flooded his mind.

Fai took another step backwards.. then all of a sudden, he turned and ran.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THE BLONDE DOING?

"FAI!" He yelled.

As though triggered by the mage's sudden movement, the beast sprang forward right in the blonde's direction.

"DON'T RUN!" Kurogane yelled again as he too dashed diagonally forward towards Fai, one second after the beast set off.

Then everything seemed to happen in slow motion before returning to its original speed.

Kurogane watched as the blonde's eyes widened in shock at his voice and turned to look at him.

At the same moment, he saw the long claws of the beast strike forward, aiming straight at the blonde's back.

Kurogane could almost see the scene of those long poisonous claws strike the idiot, sending blooding spurting in all directions in the next few seconds

With all the strength he could muster, he leap forward, hurling the blonde into his embrace as he used his momentum to propel himself out of the the claw's way.

If he were a few milliseconds faster, he would have evaded the attack completely. Sadly he was a tad too slow and the blow ended up scrapping his shoulders and back, leaving three long cut marks and a flood of blood in its wake.

The last thing he remembered was the beast swinging its huge arms at him which sent him flying off.

As his breath got knocked out from the huge impact by the beast, he vaguely saw three arrows fly towards the beast, the first landing straight into the monster's right eye. He watched as his vision bounced when he landed heavily on the ground, he could not continue on to see where the other two arrows land. But strangely, he had a hunch that they were going to hit their mark.

The impact with the ground sent his ears buzzing as his vision start to blur. He caught sight of the blurry figure in the far distance with what looks like a bow. A light mob of yellow seemed to catch his eye. With much sheer willpower, Kurogane tried to hold on to his conscious.

But the impact was ultimately too much for him and he had no chance but to succumb to the silence darkness that was so ever inviting.

xXx

When he woke up, he was already in the Yasha camp with the blonde tending to his wounds.

He had no idea what happened after he was knocked out and nobody spoke of it..

...

More like there was nobody to tell.

When he found himself in the camp, Yasha-ou was nowhere to be found, neither were any of the men that were present on the day.

It was as though they had never set foot in the camp before.

Well.. technically there's still the stupid blonde whom he cannot even communicate with.. which was as good as nothing.

And the fight with the monstrous beast.. he briefly recalled snippets of it but overall, he had very little impression of it.

He only remember someone shooting those arrows at the beast.. Was it the blonde? He thought he saw.. But he couldn't be sure. Did the mage defeat the beast by himself? Did he finally use his magic? Or did someone come to save them?

One thing or another, he was pretty sure the blonde must have done something to impress the King.. to convince him to let them in.. but guess there was no way to find out now.

All that he could get out from the people he had trained with thus far was that he knew was that they arrived around two days ago. And that shortly after he gain conscious, they were to join their training.

He simply assumed that the both of them had been successfully admitted into the camp..

"Kurogane-sama!" A little boy of about twelve years old came bursting into his tent as though the world have collapsed. In this army, usually two to four men would share a tent.

"What? Did the enemy attack?" Kurogane eyed the boy in suspicion, his hand hovered above his sword in preparation to fight. But he had a hunch it wasn't.

"No.. It's Fai-sama.." The boy panted, his words came in broken pieces as he attempted to catch his breath.

"URGH! What did the blonde do again?" Kurogane growled, letting out a sigh of frustration as he marched forward exiting the tent. "Lead the way."

Maybe it was his unusual appearance that caught the interest of the bullies in the army.. Well, there weren't many blonde-headed. more like there was none. Everyone's a brown or black headed here..

Or maybe it was just the blonde being his usual annoying self, or maybe it was the language barrier that caused misconceptions, but the blonde had been getting into quite a few trouble with the people lately and every time, he had to step in to resolve the matter.

He remember the first time it happened was when he woke up to some distinct shouting outside the tent. He had no idea what exactly happen, but when he got out to see what was happening, he saw the blonde grabbing a soldier by the collar, his fists already in the air as though ready to land his blow on him.

The soldier was trembling in fear and calling for help when he approached them. Upon seeing such a scene, Kurogane, of course stepped in to stopped the fight. He could not remember exactly what the man was saying but the story was something along the line of how Fai stole his clothes and he was simply asking him to give them back. Then Fai refused to returned them and got offended, threatening to beat him up.

At first he was skeptical of what the soldier had said.. maybe it has been some sort of misunderstanding.. after all, without the meat bun, the blonde couldn't understand their language. It could just be a communication problem that lead to a misunderstanding. So he tried to double confirm with the blonde by pointing at his shirt.

He watched as the blonde eyes widen, as he shook his head furiously as though he was denying with all his might.

"Check the back of the collar. It has my name imprinted on it." He recalled the fat man saying.

And true to his words, there was two large words imprinted at the back..

Only then the blonde looked at him in an apologetic manner, giving his usual grin.

He almost want to beat him up himself.

In the end, he had to apologize and promise to return the shirt to the soldier the next day.

Then..

there was the time when he was caught lurking around in some prohibited area.

Once again he had to apologize on his behalf.

And the time when he found three men cornering the blonde by chance.. He was passing by when he heard sounds of fighting in the distance. Initially he had wanted to ignore but a distinct mob of blonde took his attention and he walked forth to see three men ganging up on the blonde. His clothes was all tattered and torn by the time he got there. And in his anger, he beat the hell out of the three men..

..To find out that he was actually the one who started the fight.

The embarrassment when he realised he had sided the wrong person..

That incident earned the both of them a serious warning as fighting among men outside of training was strictly prohibited.

He did recall some messenger boy telling him that they have to strictly obey to the rules and regulations upon joining the camp and that any violation will result to harsh punishment. It was like any other army.

He had wanted to pass the days in the army peacefully but the blonde seemed to cook up trouble faster than he could cook a meal.

So what did the blonde do this time?

xXx

When Kurogane got to the scene of the crime, he saw that some one else had already reached there before him.

And that's definitely not a good sign.

"Mizuro-War master." Both the messenger boy and Kurogane greeted in sync. In this army, right after Yasha-Ou, was the War master who helps the King to strategise and lead battles. And this man, Mizuro was him.

"What just happened here." Mizuro boomed, his eyes swiped the five men sprawled on the floor. Beside, Fai stood restrained by two of whom Kurogane thought to be Mizuro's men.

Each one five men were done in heavy bruises as though they just had a very bad thrashing by the blonde.

Goodness.. Did the blonde get into another fight?

What the fuck is wrong with him?

"We were just walking by when he jumped upon us and attacked us!" One of the men exclaimed.

"I think he just enjoys attacking people." The second one grunted.

"I know right! I have no idea what's wrong with him!" The third agreed, nodding solemnly. "I swear we didn't even go anywhere near him."

"What do you have to say."

Kurogane watched as the first man opened his mouth to say something but was immediately cut right in by Mizuro.

At those words, Kurogane's heart sank.

To his expectation, his question was only met with silence.

"He.." Kurogane opened his mouth in attempt to help the blonde.

"What do you have to say?" Mizuro asked again, making Kurogane swallow back his words. It was obvious the War master was asking Fai and not him.

And it was also obvious that Fai would not be able to answer.

For a brief few second, a thundering silence hung in the air.

"Did you know he almost wanted to beat Shozu-sama up before?" The first man added in a small voice as though trying to add another sentence to Fai's crime list. "It wasn't the first time."

"I have no idea what did I do to him to make him hate me so much. " The man Shozu finally spoke.

"I think he's unbalanced."

There was this unmistakable pity which hung in his tone.

Kurogane raised his brows for a moment as he eyed the man who had just spoken. For some reason, the man seemed very familiar.. That scar which cut across his face.. where did he see it before?

His eyes then traveled to the blonde who was staring at the fat man with hatred. There was this crazy look upon his face that even surprised him.

Did he really intentionally attack the man?

Why?

As though finally noticing him, blue eyes met the red ones. Then the blue eyes narrowed as those lips curled up into a smile.

Did he find it funny? Was he playing a prank?

He had been getting really edgy these few days..

What the fuck is the blonde thinking?

Kurogane could only stare back as he tried his best to figure out what exactly was the blonde thinking.

"According to Code 32: No men shall fight one another outside of training hours and training grounds."

"Fai Flourite, you are now punished to a night at the wooden cross."

Kurogane continued to eye the blonde wearily as they proceed to take him away.

He did not know what to think.

Maybe he ought to let him learn his lesson for once.
