Chapter 14: Everything is in a Mess
"Ryu!" Toya yelled as he weaved around the tents looking for the messenger boy.
"Where the hell is he when I need to find him most?" Toya cussed. He could feel the anxiety within him increase with each passing second.
The sun had already begun to set. In matter of time, the meeting would commence and it would be too late to do anything then. Toya wanted to hit himself. How could he let such a big loophole slipped through his fingers? That's so unlike of him. He had always been able to analyse things objectively. What in the world just happened to him?
"Argh!" The man swore once again, letting out a frustrating hiss. Time is ticking. With each passing second, the chances of him trying to right the wrong would decrease. There's no point in finding the boy now. He'll have to convey the message himself. With that decision, he quickly turn around and head for the dungeons. Hopefully Kurogane would still be in his cell and he could try to negotiate terms with the dungeon guards to let him talk to him. His brisk walk slowly translated into a quick jog as he turned around the corner heading towards the south end of the camp.
"Ouch!"
A yelp of pain travelled to his ears as his chest hit something hard. A loud thud followed after before another cry of pain sounded as someone landed on the ground.
"I'm sorry." Toya grunted in annoyance. In the midst of his hurry, he had not notice someone turning around the corner and had accidentally bumped into him. Toya threw a concern look at the teen to check if he's alright before rushing off. He's in a fucking rush now. Trust anyone to hinder him now.
"Urgh.." A growl of pain reached his ears as the teen bend over clenching his leg. The boy had remained on the floor for a longer time then he expected. Concern shot through his head as he stopped completely in his tracks.
"Are you alright?" Toya enquired, reaching out to give a hand. It looked like the kid had hurt himself during the collision.
"Yeah.. Thanks! I'm fine..!" The teenager replied awhile after flexing his leg and he helped himself to the hand which had been hovering before him. With the aid of the black-headed male, he pulled himself up right and pat the sand that clung onto his clothes as a result of the fall. Toya could not help but noticed a cut through his pants and a dark liquid seemed to be seeping through those thin cloth.
"Are you sure you're alright?" Toya asked again, his eyes focused the teen before focusing on the entrance to the dungeon that was just metres away. Under normal circumstances, he could definitely have made the kid go to the medic with him but.. now is no normal circumstance. He need to get to the dungeon.. He need to get there fast, before Kurogane get shipped off to the meeting.
"If you don't mind, I'm in a hurry.." Toya added, returning his attention to the teen.
Toya-sama." Toya watched as he greeted him politely, bowing slightly before looking up at the tall male. He noticed a small but deep scar at the top of his brow. For a brief moment, he wonder what could have gotten him the scar.
"I'm fine! It's just a small cut. No worries. I'll clean the wound up later and it should be fine." The teen said with a smile, his eyes beamed into a slit.
"If that's the case, I'll go first then." Toya eyed the teen to double check before turning around to head on his way. He only took a few steps when a call from behind made him paused in his tracks once again.
"Toya-sama!"
Toya turned around slightly to catch a puzzled look upon on the teen's face.
"Are you heading to the dungeons?" The black brows frowned in slight bewilderment. The scar upon those brow disappeared just so shortly into the rest.
"Yes I am." The tall man paused in his tracks once again. Maybe this kid can help pull some strings to let him talk to Kurogane. "Do you know who's in charge of that area? There's someone inside I need to speak to urgently."
"Huh? I'm the one in charge of the cells." Surprise now replaced the puzzled expression on the teen's face. "Who do you want to talk to? There's no one there anymore."
This time it was Toya's turn to be surprise. This boy is the one in charge of the dungeons? So if he asked him.. Maybe he'll let him speak to Kurogane? But what did he meant by no one there anymore?
"Isn't Kurogane kept there?" Toya could not help but feel a sickening dread spread across his guts. Did they move him out to another place? Or had he left for the meeting? How is he going to find him now?
"Oh! You wanted to speak to Kurogane-sama? He's not there anymore." As though some sort of enlightenment hit him, the teen replied, cocking his head sideways. "If you want to meet him, you'll have to wait for a while.. but.." Then a look of deep thought flashed across his face and he added, "hmm.. you're not even supposed to meet him anyway..?"
"What do you mean by he's not there anymore?" Toya questioned sharply, staring hard at the teen, shooting him with his murderous glare. Dread now engulfed him, attacking his body with almost surreal intensity. He better..
"Hmm.. He had some business.." At the question, the teen shifted his eyes away slightly, his feet shuffling on the same spot as though he was trying to hide something.
Business?.. That could only be..
"What?! Wasn't the meeting supposed to be at 7pm? It's not even time yet!" At his words, Toya exploded. His worst fears had come true. Anger erupted within the tall man like a volcano, spilling its lava across the land.
"Oh. You knew about the meeting? Hmm I thought it was supposed to be a secret." Toya watched as surprise flickered across his face before a sigh of relief left him. "Since you already knew about it, there's no point in me keeping mum..."
"Well, Mizuro-sama pushed the meeting forward.. So it started earlier.." The teen with the scar on his brow added. "I brought him to over almost an hour ago."
"We saw you leaving his tent. Toya-sama also went to find Mizuro-sama just now didn't you?" The teen added lightly, ignorant of the murderous atmosphere that suddenly attached itself to the air.
No.. Toya could feel his head throbbing in pain as a headache spread around his skull. Things are going real bad. "Fuck." A swear word left his mouth. Did he just missed the chance to talk to Kurogane face to face? This is totally not going well. Then a sudden thought flashed across his mind and the furrowed brows stretched apart.
"Wait. You're the guard of the dungeons?"
Maybe there's still some hope..
"Did Ryu come to pass Kurogane a message?" If Ryu didn't make it.. Maybe it's still not too bad.. There might be some probability of salvation if that's the case.. But the answer that came from the teen was not what he had wanted to hear.
"Yeah he did! Were you the one who sent him?" The teen replied with a tinge of excitement before a worried look flashed upon the face. "He was looking pretty grim when he came over. I was kinda worried.."
Oh no.. No. No. No.. Kurogane got the message.. So he'll agree with whatever Mizuro has in mind for him even if it wasn't part of the plan? That's bad! No.. maybe he would disagree.. What are the chances? He couldn't be sure. How could he be so confident of his plan when there's so many unknown factors revolving it? He must have been crazy to think that it would all work out.
Panic now came crashing like waves upon the cliff on a stormy day. Anxiety filled his guts and a pang of uneasiness shot up his spine. Frantically, he turned around to head off to Mizuro's tentage. He need to interfere with the meeting now..
"Hey Kishimoto! Have you heard the news? Mizuro's calling everyone for an announcement!"
A loud voice from behind the teen sent a bullet through his thoughts.
Announcement? Toya felt his heart clenched and paused for that second.
"We're supposed to gather everyone in the parade square in 5 minutes time!" The voice continued to get louder. "What are you doing here…"
"Oh.. Toya-sama." The male stopped short in his sentence and greeted him with a bow upon seeing him.
"What announcement are you talking about?" The black eyes widened in horror as he grunted with his teeth all clenched together. Toya's heart had almost leapt to his mouth, threatening to escape as an impossible cold water of dismay poured on top of him, drenching him from head to toe. He could feel a thousand million shivers stinging his skin. Could it be what he was dreading?
"I'm not too sure.. But it should be pretty important? Everyone is rushing around in the main-"
"Kishimoto! Maguri! Come on! We need to get going now!" A new voice broke into their conversation as another male ran passed them. "Toya-sama too!"
"Hmm.. Guess we should hurry up and head there already-…" Toya didn't even bother to listen to what the Kishimoto's friend has to say. The voice simply got softer until it disappeared into the silence of the night.
Without another word, Toya had already sprinted off into the darkness. Before long, the rowdiness of the parade square took over.
There was no doubt.
The meeting was already over.
Toya ran all the way to the parade square and arrived just in time to catch the starting of Mizuro-war master's opening speech.
Up on the makeshift platform which Yasha-ou and all the important generals, captains and war master usually sit during formal occasion, a tall man of forty years old stood demanding for attention. The lines upon his face had shown the vast amount of hardship he had been through the years and the tan and toned skin of his was telling of the amount of time he spent out in the sun training and on battle. He stood tall and mighty, emitting circles of power and position.
At the sight of the war master, the entire parade square of soldier hush into silence. Toya proceeded to join the last in line from his division. Everyone stood in attention waiting for their leader to begin his speech.
"For those who have been here with us for a while would know that this has been happening for a long time now." The man begun. "For the longest we have fought for Yasha-ou's sake. And it is still Yasha-ou's wish to regain the castle to its rightful owner."
There was no point in trying to stop the meeting. The meeting was already over. The decision had been made. The only thing he could do was to wait and pray for the best.
"But alas.. it's been taking far too long to accomplish this small task. This war has been going on for many years now. The fight against Ashura had been continuous.."
"Many of you who have recently join would not know. But those who have been here since two year ago would know."
Yes of course.. Toya shut his eyes as memories from the past flashed into his mind. The splatter of blood... the heap of bodies.. the unseeing eyes..
"You are the ones who survived the battle."
Yeah.. We both did..
"Just a year ago, we sent two teams out to conquer what seems the impossible. But none survived to tell the story."
"Now, the time has come for it again. There will be new dangers, new unforeseen challenges. But this time we will strive to gain the upper hand and accomplish this mission."
"It's our final chance to do it."
"Thus, to ensure that the mission would be a success.." The War master paused for a moment, taking what seemed like a deep breath.
"I.." He exhaled. "..will personally lead this expedition."
Toya's eyes widened in surprise before frowning slightly. Mizuro on the other hand, paused, allowing his men to take in this shocking information. Silence engulfed the area before a series of chatter filled the air.
This was not what he had expected.. But.. it may not be bad either.. His brain begun to calculate and infer the implication of this new news.
"Huh? Mizuro-sama's leading the expedition? Who's gonna lead the army now?"
"I don't know.. May one of the captains?"
"But why would Mizuro-sama suddenly want to go? That's so weird.."
The discussion got louder with each passing second.
"Silence!" His loud voice boomed across the arena, demanding attention. Almost immediately, the crowd hushed and a pin dropped silence filled the air.
Despite his confusion, Toya could not help but be marvel at the man's leading capabilities. A weak smile spread across his face. His friend has definitely became a better leader over the two years he had not seen him.
"We had a meeting to decide the candidates for the expedition and around fifty people have been decided on. Those names called will be joining this expedition."
With that, Mizuro ended his speech and stepped back. Toya watched as Watanuki took his place and begun reading from a scroll.
"Kanto Sasuki "
"Rikkudo Teppei "
"Itsuki Hikari "
"Unagi Akihito "
"Sadamori Kei.."
As more names were announced, the chatter of the crowd increased. Some expressed excitement for the trip while other expressed concern.
"Fuma Monou"
Toya knew the exact implication. Looking at those excited young souls, he could not help but let a wearily smile don on his face. Probably half or more would not make it back to the camp alive. But that's not the main issue at hand. He needed to hear the remaining of the name list to know Mizuro's decision.
"Watanuki Kimihiro "
"Akami Ryou "
Patiently, the man waited attentively for his name to come. He prayed it would come..
"Hey! There you are, Toya-sama!" A familiar voice rang out against the loud chatter in the background. Toya took his attention slightly away from the list of names and turned to the source of the voice.
"We were wondering where you suddenly ran off to. I've just got the word from Watanuki that Kurogane's in the meeting room now." The teen, Kishimoto, he had just bumped into, wriggled his way through the crowd and presented himself to the man. "You can go meet him now if you want."
" Kakaname Shouta"
"I can meet him if I want?" Confusion spread across those tan face. Isn't Kurogane supposed to be locked up and forbidden to meet anyone?
"Kinomoto Toya "
At the sound of his own name, Toya lifted his head in relief. So he's going to be part of the expedition. The war master had agreed to his terms! He could feel the sense of relief seeping through him.
"Yeah! He's no longer in confinement." Kishimoto replied him with a smile, confirming his hypothesis. "Mizuro-sama has granted him his freedom."
Very briefly, he looked in the direction of the war master, giving a gentle smile of gratitude. But the war master did not match his eyes. His sight then followed on to the announcer, the slender personal guard of the war master, Watanuki.
For a brief moment, the eyes of the the two men met. But it only lasted for that short an amount of time. Watanuki's eyes lingered upon Toya's for a brief second before looking away.. That look.. He looked almost apologetic.. Why..?
"And last of all.."
There was a short pause. And the blabber of the crowd over took the arena.
"But in return, he has to go to for the expedition." Kishimoto commented just as the name he had not expected sounded.
"Kurogane Youo."
The black eyes widen in shock. Wait. Did he hear it wrongly? This was not supposed to happen. Kurogane was supposed to..
As though an ear muff was placed over his ears, silence engulfed the area before a chatter louder than before filled the air. Toya could feel the rippled with a mixture of protest and support as his heart started pounding in agony. The throb in his head intensified as his headache returned.
No.. If Kurogane were to go with them for the expedition, then who would be left to protect Fai?
"While I'm away, the camp will be in the hands of our captain, Shozu." Mizuro started speaking once again as though answering the question in Toya's head.
The black eyes widened in shock. Shozu?
"We will move out in 2 days' time." Mizuro added. "Those who are involved, get ready."
MIZURO! A sudden surge of anger gushed up into his brain. Was it on purpose? Did he just..
"TOYA-SAMA!"
Just as he was about to shove his way through the crowd to interrogate Mizuro, a loud panic wail stopped him in his tracks as he felt a huge tug at his sleeve.
A dishevelled-looking boy with his body bent forward and his hands resting on his knees met his eyes.
"T-hank goddess. I found you."
Ryu panted, his chest heaving heavily as he tried to catch his breath.
"I-t's bad."
All eyes looked expectedly at the boy. He looked like he was about to break down into tears.
"Fai-sama.."
"I think he's d-ying.."
Toya's eyes widened in horror as yet another shocking news hit him.
"What do you mean by he's dying?! Explain yourself!" Toya demanded. How did things turn out this way?
"I don't know.. You told me to go to the building at the far end of the camp before visiting Kurogane.. And I did!"
"I found out.. what they're doing to Fai-sama.." Ryu said with a gulp as he swallowed the lump in his throat.
"So just now before the meeting, I was worried.. So I thought I'll go visit Fai-sama again.. You know, to check on him.. But when I got there, the queue-the queue was gone.. So I tried to sneak in.. "
"And Fai-sama was just lying there.."
"There was a lot of blood.. "
"On his fingers, wrist.. his body.."
"More.. from his neck.."
With that, Ryu broke down completely. Tears now streamed down those black eyes.
"The door.. locked.. didn't know what to do..
"Fai- Fai-sama"
"P-lease help him! Toya-sama!" Ryu sniffled between his tears.
