Chapter 15: The Rescue

"Are you sure of what you saw?" The taller male glared at the boy. With one hand on his shoulders, Toya bent down to meet shorter male's eyes.

"Yes.." Ryu sobbed, his eyes squinted shut with one hand wiping off the tears which were streaming down his face. "There-there's no way I could ha-have seen wrongly."

"Fai-sama.. Fai-sa-ma.." His words then dissolved into sniffles and sobs.

"Ehhhh… what's happening to Fai-" Kishimoto begun but stopped short in mid-sentence at the severely disapproving look from Toya. At his words, Ryu broke down into a hysteric bawl. Toya could only haul torrents at Kishimoto for being so insensitive and oblivious to the situation. There was no point in asking Ryu anymore questions.

Amidst Ryu's wail, Toya took a deep breath and let the information sink in. This is bad. Everything's going so wrong. He wanted to confront the war master and make him change his mind or maybe talk to Kurogane to further discuss the issue. But this.. This new bit of news is definitely more pressing than anything right now.

Closing his eyes briefly, Toya attempted to clear his mind. All things aside first. He needed to get Fai out of the cell first. But how..?

"Who's the guard guarding him?"

All eyes turned to look at Toya with clueless expression as the man spoke.

"Kishimoto." Toya enquired sharply. He had not missed the aversion of the dungeon guard's eyes when he asked the question. "Who's the guard guarding him?"

Kishimoto jumped slighted at the mention of his name. Very slowly, he met Toya's eyes and glanced away.

"It's Fujisawa." Kishimoto replied reluctantly.

Toya paused for a while, contemplating what to do before sending out instructions. Yeah. That's how he'll go about doing it..

"Alright. Then Kishimoto. You go get the key from him." With the new plan in mind, Toya begun instructing everyone.

"Ryu."

"Ryu, do you want to help Fai?"

"If yes, you need to stop crying first and listen to me."

At Toya's word, Ryu calmed himself down and his sobs were reduced to occasional hiccups. Taking a deep breath, Ryu wiped off the remaining tears upon his face and begun listening attentively to what Toya had to say.

"Go to the infirmary and get Kusanagi to prepare a room. Tell him to get everything ready when we come."

Both Kishimoto and Ryu nodded in silence at his command.

Yes. That's how things should go. The focus is now on the current mission to get Fai out of the cell.

"I'll head over to find Fai first." The leader's dark brows plunged into a frown. "But I might need some help.."

"I'll go too." Before he could finish his sentence, a voice from behind him sounded.

Toya turned around to see a huge shadow tower over him. The black eyes widened slightly in surprise but an acceptance gaze soon replaced his initial surprise. The tall man of eight-foot stood before him. Toya nodded slightly with approval. He would of good use..

"Kishimoto. Meet me at the building when you get the key. Ryu, stay at the infirmary and wait for us to arrive. If anything goes wrong, we'll gather at the infirmary. Do everyone understand what I'm saying?" Toya continued.

Everyone nodded in unison.

With that the gang parted and the two of them head off into the woods while the other two rushed to complete their individual task.

"Oi."

"Mizuro said that if I were to agree to go, I can have my freedom back," Kurogane grunted, his arms folded in front of him with an ultimate pissed off look on his face.

"So can I go now?"

The meeting had already ended for some time now and the war master had headed down to make the announcement of the meeting's outcome. Everyone had long left, leaving him all alone in the meeting tent.. well, with an annoying guard.

"I'm sorry.. But you can't.. Mizuro-sama had instructed for you to stay until further orders.." The kid guarding the door leapt up in surprise at his sudden words and stuttered.

"Fuck." Kurogane hissed. "What the hell is wrong with these people?" He mumbled, getting off his seat. He's not so free to sit around the whole day. Can't they see he got something to do? The tall man took huge strides towards the door.

"Kurogane-sama! Please just stay here!" The small body quickly ran to stand in front of him with both hands outstretched. The voice was almost pleading. "Please don't get me into trouble.."

"Tsk. I'm just going back to my tent." Kurogane growled, gently shoving the boy aside. "If Mizuro needs something from me, he'll know where to find me."

"Please.. Kurogane-sama.." Little did he know, the kid simply bounced right back on track and this time he ran pass him and stood in front of the door, blocking his exit.

"I'VE ALREADY AGREED TO HIS TERMS WHAT MORE DOES HE WANTS FROM ME." He boomed unable to handle his frustration anymore. It has been two days. Two fucking days since the incident with Shozu. And he has no idea how's Fai doing now. Nobody seemed to know what exactly happened to the blonde after he got himself all locked up. Now he has to leave with them for some fucking expedition.. and Fai has to stay. Where has all the reasoning in the world gone to? How can he leave Fai here all alone especially after all that had happened? Why wouldn't they tell him anything pertaining to the stupid idiot? Then another thought into his mind. ..well.. maybe.. they just didn't want to tell him?

"Kurogane-sama please calm down." The boy tried to appease the anger welling within him. Instead, it made him madder. Kurogane grabbed the boy by the collar, preparing to lift him off the floor.

Just as he was about to explode on the boy again, a voice from behind the door travelled into his ears.

"Mizuro-sama has sent the word. You may leave now."

Kurogane turned around to see Watanuki emerging from behind the flaps. Almost instantly, he released his grip. A small smile spread across his face as the red eyes rolled in annoyance.

"That's more like it. I have no fucking idea why would you'll want to keep me here." Kurogane growled as he headed toward the exit. "Now, where the hell is that guy."

With that he left the tent.

The first place Kurogane went was to their tent.

"Oi Fai!" He called as he lifted the tent's flip to enter into their room. An empty room met this eyes and the red eyes narrowed in suspicion. Fai's definitely not in.. but.. wait.. Kurogane could not grasp what exactly was it but something just doesn't seemed right.

Subconsciously, Kurogane leaned forward and rest his palm on the table in the middle of the room. A strange sensation upon his palm caught his attention. Slowly he lifted his hand up for closer examination.

A layer of dust coated his entire palm.

Surprise flicked across his face and he looked up, eyes darting to every corner of the room. Kurogane gasped at the sudden realisation at what exactly was wrong with their room. No.. to be exact, it's not that there's anything wrong with the room.. It's just that everything looked.. the same.

The room looked exactly like how it was when he left two days ago. The crumpled bedsheets on their bed, the change of clothes he absentmindedly threw on the chair, the half-drunk cup of water that was still on the table. The dark brows plunged at the sight before him. There's no way the neat freak idiot would leave things the way they were for two days straight. The blonde had always been nagging at him to keep his things tidy.

No. There was no doubt.

In the two days he was locked in the dungeons, Fai had not returned to their room.

Kurogane came to the conclusion that he did not want to believe in. If the idiot had not returned to their room for the past two days, then where is he now? A sickening feeling filled his guts as random images of the blonde flashed into his mind. Did something really happen to the blonde? He could not help but think.

"Oi! Have you seen Fai?" Kurogane barked, grabbing the guy who just happened to walk pass their tent.

Those black eyes of the soldier widened in shock as they instantly recognized the tall raven. "Kuro-gane-sa..ma." He stuttered, a look of ultimate fear flashed across his face. "You're.. out of.."

His own red eyes narrowed in suspicion as he glared at the man he grabbed in his hands.

"Yes. I'm free." Kurogane boomed, as he lifted the guy up and glared at the poor soul. "So tell me where is Fai. Now."

"I.. don't know.." The soldier he grabbed started, to receive a warning glare. His feet begun to lift off the ground and dangle loosely as Kurogane lifted him up.

"Alright! Alright! I'll tell you what I know. Just-t put me down" With his whole body dangling half way in mid-air, the boy panicked and fear filled his words. The collar which Kurogane was grabbing was starting to choke him.

"He's in the building at the end of the woods.." The guy sputtered.

But Kurogane continued to glare at him, lifting him another inch off the ground, urging him to continue on. The guy could sense raising anger from the male.

"That's all I know! I swear! Someone told me but I didn't go check to see its true..." He whimpered softly, tears had begun to well in his eyes. Very briefly he wonder what wrong had he done to deserve this treatment. He could swear that Kurogane would beat him into a pulp. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw Kurogane raised his other hand.

The soldier shut his eyes, waiting for the blow to land on his face.

But it never came. Instead, he felt the grip upon his collar loosen and the next thing he knew, a loud thud sounded. Almost immediately, a dull pain spread on his butt. Surprised at the sudden change in event, the gut reopened his eye and he found himself on the ground. The tall raven was nowhere in sight.

xXx

By the time the pair reached there, the sun had already set.

Darkness surround the area, casting eerie shadows under the gentle glow of moonlight. It hung low above their head, giving off light with its almost spherical shape. The air was still and silent except for the occasional rustling of trees in the wind and the heavy breathing of the two man running to their destination.

The moment they reach the building, the pair headed to the far corner of the first story and hurried down the stairs into the basement. No one spoke a word as the sound of footsteps echoed in the silence.. Round and round they went.. Even though Toya just came down this way just this morning, he still felt the endlessness of this stairway. The cell was almost four stories into the ground.

"What took you so long to get the key? Hurry! Get him out of here." An urgent voice sounded in the far distance from exit into the corridor. "Shozu-sama won't be pleased if we're gonna be late." The voice snapped.

The black brows plunged into a frown as his eyes hardened for the kill. Toya had already expected something like this to happen. There's no way Shozu would leave Fai here for long. Kurogane would eventually find this place sooner or later. Given Kurogane's character and temper, everyone also knew what kind of events would happen subsequently. But what Toya had not expected was for the fat man to move so fast. Seemed like they were one step faster than they were.

"Hand it over." Toya demanded as they burst into the corridor, appearing in front of the cell. The two of them had already had their swords drawn preparing for the battle ahead.

In front of them, a skinny guy, Ginkiro stood by the door, giving orders while the other two fumbled with the lock. Toya immediately recognised them to be Shozu's underlying. These three people was notorious in camp for being the hands and legs of the Captain to do his dirty work.

At Toya's words, all three of them jumped up in shock, their hands immediately reached down to their katana.

"Hand the key over." Toya repeated himself, easing his sword in attack position. Slowly, the three of them drew their katana and resumed a stance in preparation for the fight.

Two of them lunged himself at Toya and Toya lunged forward too. Clashing of metal filled the corridor as swords hit swords. The fight for the key into the room had begun.

Toya swirled around, evading both attacks from Ginkiro and Sakato. He then threw in a kick, tripping one of them. In a swift movement, the leg went upwards, sending a flying kick in the other's face. Both men stumbled backwards, slightly taken aback by his surprise attack.

Behind him, Rikkudo and Matsuda begun the battle of the giants.

It took a while but soon, Toya push the stealth of his katana forward, sending his two opponents sprawling on the floor, clutching their stomach, unable to get up.

"Rikkudo.." Toya turned around preparing to instruct the male to get the key, to realise that he did not have to say more.

The huge man Rikkudo, the man who had offered his help to save Fai had already defeated his opponent and was already disappearing behind the door. Following suite, Toya walked forth and enter the room himself. Squinting his eyes slightly, the soldier waited for his eyes to adjust to the dim lighting of the room.

xXx

"Building at the end of the woods.. Building at the end of the woods.."

Kurogane repeated these words over and over again as he headed into the woods in search of the place Fai was supposed to be.

"Fuck! Why is it so hard to find it?" The tall man swore as he wriggled out of yet another bush, to find himself in a foot-paved path.

Kurogane squinted in an attempt to focus on what lies ahead. In the darkness, the tall raven saw that the path twined and turn, disappearing into the woods in front. A path that lead to nowhere huh..

The red eyes narrowed at the baldness of the route. The grass which used to grow there were trampled into earth. Now all there was left was this bald route where no grass would grow. It was quite telling that this path have been used quite frequently.

Could this be the way to the building the soldier was saying?

With heightened alertness, the man marched forth.

True to his suspicion, the path lead to a single building standing at the end of the woods before a tall cliff that stretched almost ten stories high. Was this the building at the end of the woods that the guy was talking about?

Kurogane let the sight before him sink into his eyes. It was an old building of two stories, almost to the point of collapsing. If he were to pass by it he would have thought it was abandoned. Why would Fai be here?

The black brows plunged in worry. This place doesn't feel right. Immediately, the tall man sprinted forward into the building.

The corridor was vastly empty with broken windows hanging off its hinge. Kurogane quickly skimmed through each room as he ran across the corridor.

The top two floors were all empty, with nothing but a few tables and chairs. A thick layer of dusk carpeted the place. The musky smell which hung in the air suggested its long period of vacancy. It seemed like it used to be a office which had been abandoned for a long time.

Maybe the dude had just bluffed him. Maybe he really didn't know where Fai was and had simply given him a random location. But to be honest, he was also kind of glad he hadn't found Fai in the top two floor. He didn't want him to be here either. This place just isn't fit for an injured person to be in

Just as he was about to give up on this place, something in the dark corner caught his eye.

Cautiously, he moved forward. A flight of stairs going downwards met his eyes.

"Who knows.. So there's a basement in this building.." Kurogane mumbled to himself.

That was when he heard some commotion coming from below the stairs.

"Fai!" He yelled as he lunged himself towards the stairs.
