Chapter 16: The Rescue II

A disgusting smell of cum hung in the air, making the male cringe slightly. Very briefly Toya wondered how many men had come to release themselves to obtain such a foul odor...

...It's probably the same number who had violated the blonde over the past two days. He shuddered slightly at the answer that came naturally at his thought..

Being reminded that he had also been one of the many who did the despicable act to Fai, a sense of guilt flooded over the man.

But all these didn't matter anymore. Toya watched, breathing a sigh of relief as Rikkudo bend over and lift the blonde in one swift lift before turning around. At least they got here in time. Toya could not help but let a small smile spread on his face. They had made it in time!

But the sight of the blonde immediately wiped the smile off his face and sent shiver down his spine.

In Rikkudo's arms was a broken Fai, all covered in blood. While picking him up, Rikkudo had thrown his white yukata over the blonde to cover him from the cold but the thin piece of cloth could do little to cover the damage that had already been done. Toya watched in horror as patches of red begun to grow and stain on the white sash.

Glancing back to the bed, a large stain of dried up blood bored into his eyes. How long has he been bleeding? And how much blood had he lost? Drained of blood, the already pale face now looked ghostly.

Shaking his head in disgust at his own inability, Toya took off his cape and threw it over the blonde. The air was cold outside.. but most importantly, he did not want to see the blonde in his current state. His opaque winter cape had effectively covered what he did not want to see most.

Please don't die. Helping the broken body onto Rikkudo's back, Toya prayed with a sinking heart. They then proceed on their way to the infirmary.

"Fai!" Kurogane yelled as he rushed down the stairs as fast as he could. But there was just too many.

"Fuck the damn stairs." The raven grunted as he quickly trotted down the top few before leaping down the remaining five flights of stairs. Round and round he went. It was as though there was no end to it.

Finally, Kurogane reached the final flight of stairs and in a jiffy he burst out through the exit into a long corridor.

What..

..in the world..

The sight before him took him aback.

Sprawled on the floor, three men lied in a blood bath all faced down on the ground.

"Fuck!" He cussed as he rushed forward to check the condition of the men. Two of them were lying face down on the floor with blood oozing out from their sides. While the last lie unconscious at the further end.

Kurogane flipped one over to check the man's wounds and a flicker of surprise flashed across those red eyes. His red eyes then darted to the two others.

Now that he was nearer to them, he suddenly realized how he recognized all three of them.

They were the underling of Shozu. Slowly but carefully, Kurogane reached out and pressed two fingers at the temples on the neck.

Thump- thump-thump..

He's still alive..

He moved on to check the other two's pulse..

They're all alive..

But what exactly happened here?

Kurogane examined the sword cut at the man's shoulder which was still damped with blood. It was stretched from the shoulder blade to his torso. The cut decreased in depth as it ranged across the body. How did he get these wounds?

Then the tall man looked up from his position at the gentle warm gust of breeze that caressed his face.

A door that was slightly ajar met his eyes. It led into the darkness. Wind? The tall man could not help but feel surprise. They were stories below the ground.. Where did the wind come from?

The red eyes squinted in suspicion as he took in the sight. Something inside him stirred, urging him to explore its insides.

Just as he was going to head inside the room, footsteps behind him took his attention. Kurogane swirled around, hands on his katana in preparation for any sudden attack.

"Kurogane." The voice triggered something in him, making his brows twitch. The tingle that rang in that voice.. Kurogane had no doubt who it belonged to. His temper flared up two notches.

"You son of a bitch." Kurogane spat with animosity as he plunged forward to confront the man whom he so wanted to kill now.

"Where the fuck did you hide Fai?" He growled as he drew his katana, striking forward for the kill.

But before he could get near enough to strike a deathly blow at the fat man, Shozu said something that made his blood chilled that split second.

"What did you do to my men?" The reply came curtly and sharply. Instantly, Kurogane stopped short in his tracks. His mind quickly the implication of him alone in the blood bath hit him..

"No.. I didn't do this." Kurogane stuttered just so slight at Shozu's accusation. The depressing feeling of being stuck in the dungeon flashed into his mind as devaju hit him flat in his face. No.. He's not going to get locked up for attacking fellow comrades again.. He didn't do it! He's not going back into that hell hole again! But.. The situation was not in favor of him.

Kurogane watched in horror as Shozu eyed his men who were all drenched in blood before returning his glaze back at him again. It was obvious what the fat man was thinking. No. Anyone would jump to that conclusion given the situation.

Swallowing the lump in his throat, Kurogane urged his mind to think of something to defend against his case. But none came. His mind was as blank as a piece of white paper.

"Shozu-sama.." A sudden whimper caught their attention, disrupting the silence in the air. Both men turned to face the shadow of the man lying on the floor at the far corner.

"Sorry we failed you.." The body moved slightly in attempt to push himself upwards. But collapsed back onto the floor once again.

"Kinomoto.." The man breathed heavily, panting slightly as though he had difficultly letting the words out.

Kurogane's eye widened slightly at his words. Kinomoto? Kinomoto.. the guy he met outside Mizuro's tent? What has he got to do with this? Was he the one who did this to them? .. But why?

"Kinomoto came.."

Wait. Kinomoto? The red eyes widened more as he suddenly recall something. No wonder the name sounded so familiar! Kinomoto as in Kinomoto Toya.. Sakura's brother?!

"Kinomoto? Toya?" He could not help but to voice out his surprise.

Arh.. Now that it all came back to him...The Toya he knew had brown hair and brown eyes.. This Toya had black hair and black eyes.. No wonder he could not recognized him at first glance! But what has he got to do with..

"..and took him away."

Those red eyes widened even bigger as his heart begun drumming. Took him away? What did he mean by took him away? Him as in Fai?!

"What the fuck do you mean.." Kurogane barked, his temper rising as he reached forth to grab the man by his collar and shook him. But the man's head simply rolled to the side as he slipped into unconsciousness.

"Seems like we came too late." The familiar voice sounded once again making the tall man snapped his head backwards at the fat man.

"What too late?" Kurogane boomed threateningly. Anger gleaned in his eyes.

He watched as a sad expression clung onto the man's face before averting his eyes away.

"I sent them here to save him." Shozu lowered his voice down to a whisper. His voice was strained and sounded almost too upset.

"But guess we were too late."

"What.." Kurogane's brows twitched in annoyance as he watched the man take a deep breath.

"Kinomoto had been holding Fai in custody for the past two days you were in dungeons."

Those red eyes leapt wide open.

There was a mad rush the moment the two reached the infirmary. Ryu, Kishimoto and Maguri were already waiting for them at the entrance. The moment their eyes laid on the blonde, they knew things were as bad as it seems. Without a single word, all five of them hurried inside.

The infirmary consist of a large tent partitioned into many rooms by screens and tent ages sufficient to cater to hundreds of soldier during post-war time. Columns and rows of beds lined the general treatment area which was mostly empty at this point of time.

Without a single glance at the patients currently residing there, the gang rushed past the area, heading deeper into the infirmary where the room Toya had requested for was waiting.

"Take a look at him. Toya instructed as he helped Fai onto the prepared bed. "He's in really bad condition."

"Please save him!" Ryu begged as tears begun to flow from his eyes once again.

Silently, the tall spiky black haired doctor nodded, giving a reassuring look before disappearing behind the flap of the tent of a room within the infirmary.

Solemn looks now hung upon each and everyone's while they awaited news from the treatment. Ryu was praying earnestly in one corner while Kishimoto and Maguri waited in another. Now that he had successfully gotten Fai out of the cell, the clock in Toya's mind begun to tick.

"Ryu. Go get Kurogane. Bring him here." Toya spoke as soon as the flap of the tent fell back into its original position.

Ryu jolted up in surprise at his name before nodding in agreement. In a split second he was gone.

The announcement had ended some time ago. Kurogane would be looking for Fai now. It would be best to get someone to bring him here.. Things would turn out bad if he were to find his way here.

Now that he had sent Ryu to get Kurogane, Toya had better things to worry about. How will he clean up this mess before Kurogane comes? If he found out what happened to Fai while he was locked in the dungeons.. or how the plan to get him out and watch over the blonde had failed..

Toya shuddered at the thoughts that were jostling in his mind.

Gosh. He don't want to know the consequences. No. Kurogane must not find out before they leave for the expedition. If he did, it would probably turned into a blood bath and the final chance to recapture the moon castle would be lost.

It'll be better if Kurogane doesn't know about all these before the expedition. Yes that's right. They'll have to hide the truth from Kurogane. Quickly, he thought of a plan and begun passing down instructions.

"Now. Everyone listen up." Toya started, a sense of authority reeked in his voice.

All eyes turned to look at him.

"Kurogane must not know what happen to Fai." Toya instructed, watching surprise flickered across the people's face.

"But.." Almost immediately, the protest came.

"Keep your mouth sealed." He insisted, staring hard at Kishimoto. "Imagine what he'll do if he found out." Understanding flooded over the boy's eyes and He immediately shut up, nodding slightly. It's the only way.

"He must not know until we leave for our expedition." Toya added.

That is if we come back. Toya added in his head. For all he know, they might not even come back alive.. And when they do.. Well.. He'll leave that problem to later.

"Don't speak a word and let me do the talking when Kuro-" He continued upon the nods on everyone's head but stopped short at the realization of a certain someone.

Wait..

"Where's Rikkudo?" He asked to receive puzzled looks from everyone.

"He left after he sent Fai into the treatment room.." Maguri said with a quizzical look upon his face. "I'm not sure where he went though.."

Just as he was about to question the guard further, a loud voice from behind took his attention.

"WHERE'S FAI?" The voice thundered.

Toya turned around to see the tall raven who just arrived two weeks ago stop short before him.

The black eyes widened in surprise... That was faster than expected?

"Kurogane-san." Despite his surprise, Toya greeted politely as he bowed gently forward.

"Kinomoto Toya." He introduced himself, reaching his hand forward.

"I'm glad Ryu had brought you here. You see.." Toya started to be interrupted by a highly irritated voice.

"Where's Fai?" The voice snapped again. The red eyes bore deep down into his black ones. A slight surprise flashed into those black eyes as Toya's brows plunged down just for a second. Something is not right.. That was not the reaction he had expected..

"Where's Ryu?" Suddenly noting the absence of the kid, Toya asked. Did the kid not bring Kurogane here..?

"What Ryu. Don't change the topic. Where's Fai." Kurogane's answer was short and crude. It was obvious the tall man wasn't in the best of moods.

Toya's heart sank for a moment. He did not know how Kurogane had found this place but apparently it was not Ryu that had brought the man here.

"He's inside.. Receiving treatment. You'll have to wait for a while." Toya sighed, once again at dismayed at how things never seemed to turnout to what he had expected

"Kusanagi will be out soon." He added softly.

"How is he?" There was a tinge of suppressed anger in his words. It was as though he was trying to prevent himself from erupting. Toya couldn't be sure but he thought the tall raven was clenching his teeth as he spoke... But why..?

But before he could figure out what was going on, Kusanagi exited from the room with a grim look upon his face.

Kurogane's attention immediately turned to the doctor.

"How is he?" The tall man spat between his words.

Toya stared at the tall spiky haired medic making sure he got his attention and shook his head. Don't tell him.

A look of understanding flashed upon his face as he nodded slightly before turning to answer Kurogane's question.

"It's nothing serious. He's suffering from malnutrition and insomnia. His lack of sleep together with insufficient nutrients probably caused the spasm he had two days ago. This happens as a warning signal to the person that the body deprived of food. I've already given him the required IV drops and his daily check-up."

"He's currently sleeping.. So it's better.."

Before Kusanagi could finish his sentence, Kurogane had already shove him aside and made his way to the room. In a matter of seconds, he disappeared behind those flaps.

Toya felt his heart thumped with anxiety. He had a bad feeling about this.

"Toya-sama! I couldn't find Kuroga-.." Just as he was about to follow after to enter the room, a young voice called out in panic as Ryu rushed in, bursting into the area.

"It's ok. He's here already." Toya shook his head slightly, sighing.

Confusion flashed across the boy's face at his words but Toya shook him off. There's no point in debating over this issue now. The fact that he's here.. That's good enough. Kurogane should be satisfied with knowing Fai was in good hands. At least that'll put his mind at ease for a while to allow him to prepare for the long trip ahead… right? Toya could only speculate.

Bang!

That's when a loud crashing sound sounded from behind the flaps. Everyone's attention perked up as silent gasps of air filled the air.

With an escalated heartbeat, Toya rushed inside just in time to register the tall man pulling at the new set of yukata which was don on the slender body. The futon that was covering the blonde had been flipped over, exposing the body. A broken jug of mug lay in pieces on the floor beside.

"Kurogane-san.. You should leave Fai-san to rest. He needs.." Toya urged with a tinge of nervousness. He need to get Kurogane away from the blonde while he cover up the tracks. Kurogane must not find out!

That was when Kurogane exploded.

"YOU FUCKING BASTARD!"

Without warning, Toya felt his whole body swirled a hundred eighty degrees around by a large force upon his shoulder. A gush of air rush by as his eyes caught a glimpse of red and black before something flashed across his face.

The next thing he knew, he landed on the floor with an aching pain across his chin.

A/N:

Sorry this came out abit later than expected. I had alot of problems with the Kurogane part. :/ Couldn't decide what to let him see/not see and if he's going down the stairs or not. :/ so many possibilities. So i ended up rewriting and changing 60% of the plot for this chapter..

As a result, this part turned out to be shorter than expect.. i split it into 2 again! -.-

Sigh. Anw i'm getting sick of writing this.. It just takes too much effort to churn out a chapter. I'm not even sure if people likes this story anymore. :/ But despite that, i'm really getting fond of Shozu. haha he's such a good liar that even i'm amazed at how he can twist the situation to benefit him so easily. I wonder what will happen to Toya, Kurogane and Fai now.. Sometimes i wish i'm the one reading this story instead of writing it. :( Life would be so much simpler..

PS: Thanks Kira-writer for the review haha hope this was as good as what you were looking forward to! :)
