Chapter 22
"So, what does an Angel want with a Devil me?" I asked, narrowing my eyes slightly.
"Lord Michael sent me," said Castiel, "Tell me, are you aware of the existence of Demons?"
"I take it that they are different from Devils?" I asked.
"Yes," said Castiel, "As you may know, Devils were created by the original Four Great Satans by mixing their blood with Humans. What you may not know is that your kind are actually their second attempt at creating there own people."
"And Demons were the first?" I asked.
"Exactly. Demons were created by corrupting Humans and dragging them into Hell where they were tortured until they lost everything and were transformed into something else. Devils are created from living Humans, Demons from Human Souls. As a result, Demons can only have a physical form by possessing Humans and were written off as failures."
"But they're still around?" I asked.
"Yes. They make their home in the Burning Hell, the place where Evil Human Souls are sent, twisting those Souls into more of their kind and occasionally leaking through to Earth to cause problems. We actually wrote them off as a minor issue we could leave to the Hunters, but recent intelligence suggests otherwise."
"Let me guess, they're growing in power and are looking to resurrect Lucifer?" I asked.
"Correct."
"Er, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the original Lucifer dead?"
"He is, but they don't know that," said Castiel, "However, that won't stop them and if they do succeed, they will trigger the Apocalypse."
"Alright, now what does this have to do with me?" I said, narrowing my eyes.
"As part of their plans, one of the Demons gave his blood to a number of human children to create what would be the generals for the Demon army when the Apocalypse begins."
"And let me guess, I'm one?" I grumbled.
"You are," said Castiel, "However, your status as a Devil means that the powers you gain will be far more powerful."
"So what, you're gonna kill me off?" I asked, "Because that won't go down well."
"No, Lord Michael wants you to provide your strength in stopping the incoming war," said Castiel, "You will probably be summoned at some point in the not too distant future to engage in a test to see who is the strongest."
"And what, you want me to kill them all?" I asked.
"That we will leave up to you," said Castiel, "However, you must deal with them before they can open the Gates of Hell. Understand?"
"Perfectly," I said.
"Good."
He spread his wings and disappeared, leaving me alone in the park.
"Great, thats all I need," I groaned, rubbing my head.
I continued on my way home, taking a short cut past the local shopping center. As I passed it, someone brushed past me, making me pause as I felt a strange magic pass over me. I glanced at the person who had brushed past me and was unsurprised to see that it was Homura heading into the shopping center. I hesitated for a moment, before sighing and following after her. I made my way towards where I knew the music shop to be and, as I expected, I saw Madoka and Sayaka heading towards it. They looked pretty much as I expected, but were wearing the Kuoh uniform with a red necktie in place of the usual black to denote their status as middle school students. I looked around and spotted Rias Familiar stood nearby handing out Summon Flyers.
I headed over to her and tapped her on the shoulder.
"Oh, good afternoon Master Tenno," she said, bowing slightly, "Do you need something?"
"Could you give those two girls flyers?" I asked, pointing at Madoka and Sayaka.
"What for?" asked the bat in disguise.
"I just have a feeling that they will be good potential customers," I said.
The Familiar shrugged and headed over to the girls, handing both a flyer. I released a huff and headed off in the direction of the games shop. Since I was here, I might as well see what they had. I didn't need to help out with the battle with the Witch here after all. Plus, I don't know if I could resist the urge to char broil that little bastard Kyubey.
"I'm home!" I called as I slipped off my shoes.
"We're in here!" called Niko, "And you have a visitor."
I blinked. I wasn't expecting anyone. I walked through into the sitting room and was surprised to find Rias and Sirzechs sat on the sofa with cups of tea. I was doubly surprised because I couldn't sense them. I pause. No, thats wrong, I just hadn't sensed Rias because Sirzechs' power was blanketing my senses.
"My Lord Lucifer," I said, bowing to the Devil King, "What can I do for you?"
"Please, sit," said Sirzechs, "What I need to discuss isnt something you should be stood for."
I decided to ignore the indignity of being asked to sit in my own home and did as I was told, accepting a cup from Niko.
"Tell me Ren, are you aware of how promotion works in the Underworld?" asked Lucifer, "Social promotion I mean, not the Pawn ability.
"As I understand, it can be done either through accumulating power over time from Summon Requests, defeating an extremely powerful foe in combat or by doing well in Rating Games," I said.
"Correct," said Sirzechs, "Naturally, the first is the slowest and the third is the most common. The second option isn't really possible these days due to the cease fire, however, sometimes things happen that allow such battles to occur. Such as Kokabiel invading the school."
I paused.
"Wait, are you saying what I think your saying?" I asked, surprise clear in my tone.
"Ren, you defeated a Leader Class Fallen Angel while you were badly injured," said Rias, "Sure, we helped and he gravely underestimated, but it was mostly you. Not only that, but you have proved time and time again to be extremely powerful and are growing in power at a tremendous rate. I made the right choice when I decided to make you my Rook."
Sirzechs nodded and reached into his jacket, pulling out a large envelope.
"This is the invitation to the promotion exams," he said, "The next one will be held this weekend, but there's no rush. This permission has no time limit and, in the event you fail the test when you do take it, you can try again as many times as you like."
He got to his feet.
"I'll see you two at the Summit," he said, "Good day."
The Devil King vanished, leaving a calm Rias, Niko who looked like she'd been slapped with a fish and me staring at the envelope.
"I hope you know what an honor this is," said Rias, "For both you and me. You've barely been a Devil for a full year and yet you have already proven worthy to be promoted to Mid-Class. Most have to wait years for such an opportunity."
"I do," I said, "But I can't help but think that it'd be better if I waited a bit."
"Oh?" asked Rias.
"I may be strong enough, but I don't know enough," I said, "The exams have a written potion, right?"
Rias nodded.
"Yeah, I'm not ready for that," I said, "I don't want to disappoint you Prez, so I'm going to hold off for now. Plus, with everything thats been going on lately, I really don't want to add more distractions."
"Very wise," said Rias, getting to her feet, "I hope you'll take it soon though."
She said goodbye to us and left, leaving me alone with Niko.
"So, what are you going to do?" asked my sister.
"Well, I think I should probably ask Akeno for some help studying for the Exam," I said, "Right now though, I'm knackered. I'm going to bed, night."
"Goodnight."
I headed upstairs and dropped down on my bed, staring up at my ceiling unseeing as my mind swirled with everything that had happened today, from meeting Castiel to getting Summoning Flyers into the hands of Madoka and Sayaka. Frankly, the thing I was most worried about was the two girls since it was highly likely that the Brothers Winchester had everything under control and I only needed to be worried once Yellow Eyes dragged me off too Cold Oak. Even then, all I'd have to do is make sure they don't become twisted enough to actually join the Demons.
The issue of the Magical Girls however hit a lot closer to home. I happened to know that Niko and Mami were close friends and, if Mami went how she did in the Madoka Anime, Niko would likely be heartbroken. Then there's the fact that I really don't want to see any of the kids actually end up in Kyubey's grasp, so I'd be stepping in at some point to help them all out. Sure I couldn't grant wishes on the same level as the little rat, but I could at least do something to help out Sayaka and prevent her from ending up falling to Despair.
Finally, there was the surprise visit from Lucifer and his offer. That was something that honestly surprised me since I didn't really think I was powerful or influential enough to have earned the right to a promotion. Still, it could only be a good thing, so I'd do my best.
I let out a low groan as all the swirling thoughts and problems triggered a rapidly growing headache and curled up in an attempt to relieve the pain. I gritted my teeth as my head throbbed, feeling like someone had just rammed a Spear of Light through my skull, pressing my hands against my temples in a desperate attempt to relieve some of the pressure building. A part of me that wasn't trying to keep my brains from oozing out of my nose absently noted that the lights were flickering, right before the pressure in my head was suddenly released and the lightbulb exploded.
"Oh great, thats all I need," I growled as I sat up, "Looks like ol' Yellow Eye's blood is starting to do its work. I really hope it doesn't flare up during a fight."
Still grumbling, I waved a hand and the shattered lightbulb flew back together and flickered on.
"Thank Gods for magic," I muttered as I stood to change into my sleepwear.
And I'm going to end this here. So tell me, what do you think of the first new chapter of DotVN? In case you can't tell, the next arc will be Madoka based, although I doubt it'll be very long and then I'll get the Summit over and done with. Before I sign off, a few points.
Yes, that was that Castiel, but since Angels in the Supernatural Verse have Human forms anyway, he doesn't have to jack Jimmy.
The Demons are delusional since Luci is dead and not locked up. However, something must be in that cage, so its still a good idea to keep it firmly locked up.
Ren has beaten Kokabiel, a Campione and more. Sure he had help most of the time, but his fight against Kokabiel was mostly him so I'd say he's earned the right to get a promotion. It won't be for a bit though since he's way too busy. That said, I would be willing to take suggestions for folks who could join his Peerage when he gets one. No Angels or Campione though since I'm pretty sure they'd be immune to being turned into Devils.
And with that, I'm done. I hope you enjoyed this chapter enough to leave me a lovely review!
