Chapter 24

The next day, I arrived at the park to find Madoka and her friends all gathered and waiting.

"Hey, good morning," I said as I approached.

"Good morning Ren," said Mami.

"Your looking better," I said.

"Not really, I'm barely holding it together," said Mami.

"Fair enough," I said, "Now, before we begin…"

I snapped my fingers and a barrier sprang into existence around us.

"There, now we won't be interrupted."

"So how do we use these Sacred Gear things?" asked Sayaka, looking impatient.

"Well, the first thing to do is activate them," I said, "Once you do that, you can call them out at will. Trust me, it's really easy."

To demonstrate, I cycled through a load of different armours, before allowing my Sacred Gear to dissipate.

"See?"

"Awsome!" said Sayaka, "So how do we start?"

"OK, you and Madoka need to focus, imagen the part of you you feel to be the strongest," I said as the two girls closed their eyes, "Focus on that and try to bring it to the surface. If it helps, try using a stance or an attack from an Anime you like."

That earnt me some deadpan looks.

"It worked for Issei," I said.

Sayaka scoffed and closed her eyes again, scrunching them up in concentration. I smirked as I felt the deeply buried power within her stur.

"I...I want to protect people," she mumbled, "I want to be able to fight. That is my wish…"

A faint blue glow appeared around her, before it flashed out and a huge number of swords that perfectly matched the ones she would have wielded as a Magical Girl suddenly appeared. I raised an eyebrow and crouched down next to the one that had appeared nearest to me and prodded the blade.

"Hmm, Demonic," I mumbled, "Your Sacred Gear is Sword Birth."

"Sword Birth?" asked Sayaka, staring around at all the swords she'd made in awe.

"Yep, thats actually a good thing," I said, standing up and pulling out my phone, "I know someone else who has the same ability. He can teach you to use it better than I can."

I dialed Kiba and, after a couple of rings, the Knight picked up.

"Hello?"

"Yo Kiba, I need a hand," I said, "You up for training someone with Sword Birth?"

There was silence down the line.

"Ren, exactly what have you been doing?" asked Kiba and I could hear the exasperation in his tone, "You haven't stumbled on another world with Godlike beings you'll have to fight, have you?"

"Errr."

"Fine, but you're telling Koneko when you inevitably get hurt. Where are you?"

"In the park under a privacy spell."

"I'll be two minutes."

He hung up. I slipped my phone back into my pocket and turned back to see Sayaka swinging a sword experimentally as the other girls studied the swords with interest.

"So what can these do?" asked Mami.

"These? Not much," I said, "However, Sword Birth can be used to create blades with a number of different affects. Kiba can make swords that negate elemental based attacks, but I'm pretty sure its not limited just to those."

"Indeed its not," said Kiba as he passed through the spells I've put up, "Technically, you can make nearly any weapon you want with Sword Birth, but I lack the imagination to do so."

"Wow, something the great Kiba is bad at, who knew," I drawled, earning myself a mild glare, "Anyway ladys, allow me to introduce Kiba Yuuto, also known as the Prince of Kuoh and the Knight of Rias Gremory. He'll be your teacher for today Sayaka."

The girls introduced themselves, with Homura eyeing the blond Swordsman warily and Madoka and Sayaka both looking curious.

"Well, its a pleasure to meet you all," said Kiba with a kind smile, "Do you want to start now or..?"

"Actually, I'd like to see Madokas Sacred Gear first," said Sayaka.

Kiba nodded.

"Alright."

I turned to Madoka.

"Alright Madoka, your turn," I said, "Remember, don't try to force it, just let it come naturally."

The pink haired girl nodded and closed her eyes. Almost immediately, I felt the power inside her spike and a faint aura of pink light appeared around her.

"Whats going on?" asked Homura, looking around warily, "I feel like something bads coming."

"I feel it to," said Mami.

"What are you talking about?" asked Sayaka, "I can't feel anything."

I glanced over at Kiba and noticed that he could feel it too, but unlike the Magical Girls, to him it felt good and pure. I know because I could feel it to. Then, a bright, pink light appeared on Madoka's chest and the power spiked again, this time enough to crack the ground at her feet as a huge, spectral figure appeared behind Madoka and enveloped her in its ghostly arms. There was a brilliant flash and the figure vanished, leaving Madoka stood there in a very different outfit to her school uniform. In fact, she was wearing the pink dress she'd have worn had she created a contract with Kyubey, including the bow.

"What the…" I started, but before I could finish, I found a gun barrel shoved in my face.

"What did you do?" demanded Homura.

"Whoa, I didn't do anything!" I protested.

"But thats..!"

"Calm down Homura."

Everyone jumped at the sudden voice and turned to face its source, Madoka. However, while the voice had definitely been hers and came from her direction, the pink haired girl looked every bit as confused as we were, staring down at the gem on her chest.

"What was that?" asked Kiba.

"That would be me," said the voice again, the gem lighting up, "Hello, I am Madoka-kami, the Spirit that dwells within this Sacred Gear, the Hope Rose."

A moments silence. Then…

"HUH?"

"W-what do you mean you're me?" asked Madoka.

"There are many timelines and realities in which every conceivable event occurs," said Madoka-kami, "Homura knows this as she has walked in a number in her quest to save us from our inevitable fate. In my reality, during Homura's battle with a very powerful Witch, I made a wish to Kyubey for the power to destroy all Witches before they could be born, resulting in the birth of a new world and me becoming what amounts to a Goddess. However, all worlds eventually come to an end and mine was no different, leaving me, an Immortal Spirit, alone. In that moment, I was approached by a being from the Realm Outside of Time and given an choice. To remain in the Darkness forever or to become a Sacred Gear and prevent another from experiencing this cursed existence of mine."

Madoka and Homura both looked like they had been slapped and Mami and Sayaka were no different. Kiba stood off to the side, keeping quiet as he watched and no doubt made mental notes to report to Rias later.

"You sure do know how to pick em," he said when he noticed my gaze.

"That I do," I said, "So what do you think, these girls good choices for recruits when I get promoted?"

"If they agree, most definitely," said Kiba, "Of course, Rias is going to want to know about all of this."

"Fair enough," I said, "I don't intend to keep this from her anyway."

I stepped forwards and cleared my throat.

"So, I assume you can teach Madoka how to use you?" I asked.

"Naturally," said Madoka-kami.

"Good, in that case…"

I was cut off when my head suddenly throbbed and my vision blurred. I staggered and fell to my knees, pressing my fingers to my temples.

"Ren? Are you OK?" said Kiba's voice, sounding like it came from far away.

I couldn't answer, being to busy trying to keep my brains from leaking out my ears. The nearby streetlights started flickering, despite the fact they were off. My hearing and vision seemed to fluctuate and I felt my barrier shatter, followed by the lights and finally my consciousness.

When I regained consciousness, it was to the feeling of something warm wrapped around my temples and soothing my throbbing head. I opened my eyes and, for a moment, all I saw was a green blur. I blinked and the blur resolved itself into Asia, who was looking down at me worriedly as she poured her Twilight Healing into my head.

"What happened?" I asked.

I winced as my throat protested violently, sending me into a violent coughing fit.

"Ah, don't try to speak yet!" said Asia.

I groaned and gave a thumbs up.

"REN!"

I twitched slightly as Koneko and Niko appeared on either side of me.

"Are you OK?" asked my sister, looking down at me worriedly.

I gave her a flat look.

"OK, point taken," said Niko, "What happened."

I beckoned her closer. She leaned in and I flicked her in the forehead.

"OW! What was that for?" she wined.

"Asking stupid questions," I croaked, this time thankfully without coughing my lungs up, "Can I get a drink?"

I slowly sat up, wincing as my head twinged and accepted the glass of water Kiba handed me.

"How are you feeling Ren?" asked Rias.

"Great, next stupid question," I grumbled taking a sip of water.

"Whatever it was a real number on the electronics in the park," said Kiba, holding up a mobile with a cracked screen, "Even our phones are busted."

Rias narrowed her eyes.

"Thats unusual," she said, "None of the abilities you have should affect electronics like that. Not only that, but when Kiba brought you in you were bleeding from the nose and ears. I have no idea what could something like that in a Devil."

"Demon blood would be my guess," said a voice from the door.

Everyone jumped and spun around to see Azazel leaning against the door frame.

"What are you doing here?" demanded Rias, "And what do you mean Demon blood?"

"I'm more interested to know how in the world you know about that," I said.

"Oh please, you don't think I don't have ways of finding out what goes on in Heaven and Hell, do you?" scoffed Azazel, "I know exactly what Yellow Eyes is planning."

"Of course you do," I grumbled, "So any idea when I'll be carted off to whatever little battle royal that yellow eyed bastard has planned?"

"Only that it will be some time soon," said Azazel, "Despite what you might think, the Blood has been affecting you for a lot longer than just the last few weeks."

"Whats that supposed to mean?" I asked.

"Its been nearly a year since you became a Devil," said Azazel, "And in that time you have regularly been afflicted with headaches. The fact you are a Devil meant that the Demon Blood didn't affect you quite as badly as the other Children."

My eyes widened at that. I always assumed that the headaches came from exasperation, but the idea that some of them could have been the Demon Blood.

"What are you two talking about?" asked Rias, looking between Azazel and I, "Whats this about Demon blood and whose Yellow Eyes?"

I sighed and closed my eyes.

"Rias…" I started, before my senses went haywire.

My eyes snapped open and I leaped to my feet, snatching up my scarf.

"Somethings coming," I said.

"Yep, that they are," said Azazel, "Here, catch."

He threw something at me. I caught it and found that it was a golden dagger with a purple stone in the hilt.

"What the…?" I started.

"With that, we should be able to find you," said Azazel, "Have fun and try not to die."

"Wait, what?" I asked, right before the windows exploded and a massive cloud of black smoke surged into the room with the stench of sulphur.

The smoke swirled around me, forcing the others back from the sheer amount of force the swirling mass was somehow exerting.

"Aw hell, this is gonna end badly," I muttered.

The last thing I heard before I blacked out (again) was someone screaming my name.

And there we go, thats the end. Next time, we're of to Cold Oak! Should be interesting.

Yeah, I don't think I really have to go over why I chose Sword Birth for Sayaka, do I? As for Madoka, her abilities will come out when I actually get around to have her battle someone. After Cold Oak.

And I think thats it. Hopefully, I can get the next chapter out a bit sooner than this one. Until then, ta!
