The Wolf who fell in Love with Red Riding Hood

Roses and Blood are Red

Once upon a time there lived a poet. Writing played an important role in his life. Once he picks up his pen, the words he wrote are filled with emotions that stir the heart. But lately, the poet had trouble writing poems. The cause of his troubles was lack of inspirations. He can no longer write hymns, poems…just because inspiration had left him.

Parchments and papers were left untouched for years. The ink well was never opened.

The poet had nearly come to the decision to abandon his talent… until she stepped into his life. Roses of love and violets of faith bloomed. Inspiration flooded to the poet as he wrote about his beloved.

'Roses are red, Violets are blue…'

But is the poet aware that blood is red and tears are blue?

In the white world, the girl blinked her golden eyes. She then sluggishly sat up; her head swaying heavily around. She lifted her heavy head up, strands of her raven black hair clung to her pale face. Her dull eyes scanned the endless white.

"…Where am I?" the girl muttered.

She felt a tingle on her back and ran a slender finger down it. She felt a dried cut on her skin. Suddenly images flashed across her mind and voices echoed.

"NOOOO!"

"Rui!"

"Please…be free…Break your strings…"

"I've… always loved y-"

Images of blood flying through the air, Len's stricken face, Rin's shock face and… Rei's mournful, tear-stained face… his cry of anguish screamed through her head.

Her eyes widened and she clutched her head in pain. Her breaths came out sharply.

"I remember…," gasped Rui.

Suddenly voice whispered to her; "Rui…"

She spun around, "Who's there?!"

A careless step back had left her plummeting through the air. A scream escaped her pale lips. Her red hood flapped underneath her. Her empty hand was stretched out, in hope of grasping something. But nothing came to her aid. Someone, help me! She was about to hit the hard ground when…

Rin's eyes flew open and she sat up with a jolt. Her short blonde hair stuck in all sorts of directions. Her chest heaved in and out. What a dream…, thought Rin as she ruffled her messy hair. Suddenly the sheets felt uncomfortably hot against her skin so Rin decided it's best to get up. She threw her blankets aside and undressed. Her dream unsettled her.

Falling off a cliff…that happened to-

"Rin-chan! Are you awake?"

Slipping her arms through the lace sleeves and freeing her head from underneath the fabric, Rin shouted back, "Yes Mother!"

"Okay! Breakfast is ready!"

Rin skipped out of her bedroom. The smell of cooked eggs wafted to her nose. On the table were two plates, each with fluffy scrambled eggs and two sausages. There was a wooden cutting board where a fresh loaf of bread sat, finished with a jug of orange juice. Rin's stomach gave a rumble.

Her mother walked out, wiping her hand on a tea towel. "Well?" she smiled, "Aren't you going to eat?"

Rin laughed and sat down. Her mother joined her. As she ate, the dream came back. Rin swallowed her eggs, along with the uncomfortable lump in her throat. It was just a dream. It doesn't mean anything. Nothing at all.

"Achoo!"

Len rubbed his underneath his nose. He drowsily sat up and rubbed his spinning head. His ears buzzed and his nose felt stuffy. Shivers ran up his spine.

"No," he grumbled, "I can't have caught a cold…"

Len slumped back down against the sturdy of the tree overhead. Sunlight shone through the leaves, making shadows dance across Len's face. His bangs fall over his eyes as he let out a sigh. Len's wolf ears drooped. Although the sun was shining on his skin, shivers constantly travel through his body. My instincts tell me…something bad is going to happen… The last thing Len saw was a tall figure before his eyes drew to a close.

Rin looked up at the clear blue sky. Hmmm….something doesn't feel right. Her mother and she were at the market.

"Rin-chan, can you help me carry some things?" her mother called.

Rin quickly snapped out of her daydream, "Ok, Mother~!" she called and quickly rushed over to her side. She just took a paper bag off her when she heard a voice.

"RIN-CHAN!"

They both looked back to see Miku waving frantically as she tried to make her way to them through the dense crowd.

"Is that Hatsune-san?" her mother asked.

"Rin-chan!" cried Miku, "Hurry!"

Sensing the panic in Miku's voice Rin quickly excused herself to her mother. "I'm sorry Mother but Miku seemed agitated about something," she apologised as she bowed.

Her mother heaved a sigh, "Its ok," she replied, "You may go."

Rin quickly hurried over to Miku. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"I-it's Len!" Miku cried, "He has a bad fever!"

Rui looked around. But she saw no one, where the voice could have belonged to. Rui didn't like the sensation she felt. It was like someone was watching her but she couldn't see who and no one was in sight in the large white area.

"Who's there?!" she tried again. Her voice shook as she spoke.

"No need to fear, Rui. Or should I say Odile?"

Rui gasped, "You know, my role as well?" she questioned.

"Yes. I know everything about you… Of course, a mother should know her daughter."

Rui's golden eyes widened as a transparent woman with long black hair appeared in front of her. "M-Mother?" she choked, "No! It can't be! I'm a creation! A mere puppet made by Zatsune!" she cried.

A sympathetic expression came over the woman's face. "Oh, how she tricked you for so long…Once you believe you're a creation of hers then you become one…"

"No…," rasped Rui, "You can't be my…"

The woman smiled at her and reached out and stroked Rui's short black hair. She flinched at the action of motherly love. "We are all creations, my dear; creations of the one who created the story…this whole entire world."

"The person who created the story?" echoed Rui.

The woman nodded. "Yes, the Narrator. The Narrator gave me the role of your mother, that I would give birth to you and. The Narrator also designed my fate, my death." Rui stared at her mother as tears welled up in her golden eyes.

"S-so you did die Mother…," she sniffed, "Does this also mean…I'm dead as well?"

Her mother gently wiped away her tears. "There, there Rui. Don't cry. That's why you're here in this world."

Rui looked around at the endless white. "What world is this?"

"A world where you'll shall be reborn," her mother replied.

"What? R-Reborn?" repeated Rui.

"Yes," nodded her mother, "It wasn't your Fate to die, not yet. Someone else is toying with the story, someone who isn't the Narrator, someone IN the story."

Rui stiffened. "Zatsune…?" she muttered. Suddenly white feathers whirled around her. "W-What's going on?!" Rui cried as she was lifted up from the ground.

"You shall be reborn back in your world, my dear!" her mother replied joyfully, "Please take care of yourself, Rui-chan! Farewell!"

"Wait!" Rui reached her hand out towards her mother. "What about you?! I only just met you, Mother!"

Her mother gave her a ghost of a smile. "This is my Fate. But I'm glad I could see you for one last time."

"But…!" Rui tried to fight against the whirlwind of feathers as they took her further away. "Mother!" The last thing she saw was her mother still smiling before the feathers completely cover her view.

"Len? Len, can you hear me?"

Rin was kneeling beside Len's body. Meiko walked up with a pail of water and placed it next to him. Rin placed her hand on Len's forehead but quickly drew it back.

"He's burning up, alright!" she gasped.

Miku got out her lace handkerchief and dipped it in the cool water, wringed it then applied it to Len's forehead. "Meiko-chan found him like this in the morning," she explained. Suddenly they heard panting. Neru appeared with a small bag.

"Never…make…me run….like that…again!" she gasped. Neru then straightened up and threw the bag to Meiko. She caught it. "There," Neru huffed, "I got the medicine."

"Thanks Neru," Meiko grinned, "You need to run, more daily exercise."

"Don't you dare say that word in my presence!" growled Neru.

Meiko merely laughed and handed Rin the medicine. Miku helped brought the pail to Rin's side. Rin shook one pill out of a bottle and gently shook Len's body. "Len?" she whispered.

Len's azure eyes fluttered open. There was a feverish look in them. He stared straight up, seeing double-ups of Rin. "…..Rin, is that you?" he rasped.

"Shh, don't speak," Rin hushed, "Here take this pill and some water." She gently placed the pill in his mouth and scooped some water in her hand, helping Len to drink. The three princesses all smiled to themselves, thinking how adorable those two were.

"Thank you…," Len whispered then immediately fell back to unconsciousness. Rin wetted Miku's handkerchief and returned it to Len's sweaty brow.

"I've never seen a fever this bad before…," Rin muttered.

"It was easy~!" sang Zatsune, "Just throw in some fire flowers, a dash of pepper cherry seeds, anything spicy and hot and just crush them together! Viola! A powder for a burning fever! No pun intended!"

Zeito laughed as he watched Zatsune dancing around. Just seeing her smiling made him happy as well. Her long black piggy-tails swirled around her as she danced. Her ruby red eyes sparkled when she laughed. Even her pale skin seems to glow. Zeito shook his head, clearing those thoughts. "May I ask Zatsune dear, why did you plague the wolf with the fever?" he inquired.

Zatsune stopped. "Sorry Zeito. I didn't mean to leave you out." She strolled over to a rusted file cabinet and opened a drawer. She fished in it for a bit before pulling out a folder. Zatsune flashed him a smile before throwing the folder on her desk.

Its cream cover was crinkled and the edges were singed. Zeito slowly walked up to the desk and ran his finger along the edge.

Zatsune rested her chin on her hands and continued to smile. "Look inside and read it," she urged.

Zeito flipped the folder open and his crimson eyes skimmed the context. They widened and he looked up to the witch.

"Yep," she beamed, "You shall disguise as that character."

Rei stepped out in the lake's clearing with a fresh array of lilies in his arms. It had become his daily routine to sail an array of lilies on the lake's surface. If only if I had realized sooner that I was really in love with Rui. Then…none of this would have happened.

When he reached the bank, Rei knelt down and placed the lilies on the water's surface. That was when he noticed something. The wind had sent white feathers scattered about on the lake. Rei picked one feather up and held it in front of his face, examining it closely.

"A feather?"

The feather was white and pure and it seemed to glow in the light. He hadn't seen any water birds roaming the lake. In fact, there had been no birds on this lake before…except for Rui.

A breeze blew causing the trees to shiver and rustle. Len opened his eyes to see the moon high in the sky, watching over him. Len stirred, moving his aching bones. Then he felt something. Something had been draped over his body; a red hood. Rin had used her hood to keep him warm.

Len smiled to himself. Rin and her friends must have looked after him while he was plagued with feverish dreams…that he rather not think about. Len raised his muzzle up high, gazing at the moon.

Suddenly a dark cloud passed over the celestial watcher. Another breeze blew, shaking the trees around him. Len's instincts told him something is going to happen…something bad.

"R…in…"

Rin's eyes flew open. There it was again. That voice which she thought was the wind or her imagination. She lay still in her bed, waiting to see whether she's hearing voices or that…

"Rin…"

She bolted up. Yes, this time she distinctly heard it; a male's voice calling her. Rin threw her warm blankets aside and place her feet on the cold floor. That voice was coming from outside. She slipped on her boots and quietly slipped out through her window, out in the night air.

"Rin… come…"

Curiosity overpowered fear as Rin followed the voice, through the forest. Trees towered over her as dark figures. The forest floor was bathed in the ghostly light of a moon that had gone into hiding. All was silent, even the crickets were mute.

"H-Hello?" called out Rin, "A-Anyone there?"

Something drifted past, behind Rin. She spun around but saw nothing.

"Over here…Rin…"

She ran in the direction where she heard the voice. The voice…it sounded so familiar but she couldn't place her finger where or when she had heard it before. As Rin ran, she wasn't aware that she was heading to the cliff face.

Paws thudded against the forest ground, alongside with human feet. Rei and Len were running in between the trees.

"I'm sorry for bothering you at this hour," panted Len.

"No it's fine," Rei replied, "Beside, my remaining strings are telling something is not right either." He glanced at the blue-eyed wolf running beside him. To think this was the wolf he had loathed and was fated to kill. Now, he's helping it- no, him- to find Little Red Riding Hood.

They had checked Rin's place but found her bedroom empty. This had caused more anxiety to Len, for he had a feeling Rin was involved once again. "How are you doing there, Len?" Rei asked.

"That fever has left me weak," Len huffed, "But if Rin is in danger, I won't stop."

Rei stared at the wolf. His azure blue eyes were filled with determination. If Rui was involved…I'll probably do the same.

"Oh? What do we have here?"

The woodcutter and the wolf skidded to a halt. There, under a beam of moonlight, was Zatsune. She skin looked milky white and her hair was darker than ever. Her red eyes glowed in the moonlight.

Zatsune smirked, "Ah, why isn't it my wolf and marionette."

Rin ran out where the trees had ended, only to find herself on the cliff face. OhI didn't know I came out this far. She looked around. I've never been far before. This must be an edge of the forest since the trees stopped.

"…Rin…"

Rin looked straight ahead and there, near the cliff's edge, standing in front of her was…

Her eyes widened, "…Father?" she whispered.

'Zatsune?' A growl escaped from Len.

"Oh, that's a nice way to greet someone who saved your life," Zatsune pouted.

Rei stood there, frozen stiff. "…Mistress," he choked.

Len swiftly looked at Rei. 'What?! Did you call her 'mistress'?!' (A/N: Remember when Len is in wolf form, he uses telepathy to communicate)

"Yes. She was the one that… that controlled Rui and I," Rei rasped. His wide golden eyes were locked on Zatsune. Memories flooded back to him. How Zatsune tricked him into falling for Rin, how she made to him to kill Len and the results of that attempt was…Rui's death.

'What are you doing here, Zatsune?' Len decided to ask since Rei seemed to have gone pale and lost his voice.

"I was merely taking a stroll in the woods," Zatsune answered innocently.

Len shot her a glare. 'Lair.'

"That AND executing a plan of mine," she winked and stuck her tongue out.

Suspiciousness rose in Len. 'A plan? What kind of plan are you plotting, Zatsune?'

"Oh, I already planned it!" she corrected, "Actually it's in action right now!" A cruel smile spread across her face. "Should I tell you more of my plan?" she taunted, "It does involve the person you fools are looking for."

Rei stiffened and Len was holding back from ripping Zatsune to shreds. "What is going to happen to Rin?!" demanded Rei.

"Hmmm," Zatsune pretended to think, "Let's say, she's meeting up with her father."

"Father?!" repeated Rei, "But Rin's father passed away!"

Now it was Len's turn to turn pale and fall quiet. Her…father?

"I'll add another hint too," Zatsune's smile deepened, "History will repeat itself."

Len's azure eyes widened and bolt away, letting out a howl. RINNNN!

"Len?!" called Rei.

Zatsune chuckled, "So he worked it out, such a smart person."

Rei glared at the witch. He whipped out a small knife. "What are you doing?" he asked in a soft dangerous voice. Zatsune didn't replied, she continued to smile that cruel smile.

Rin took a step closer to the pale figure. "Father…?" she whispered, "Father, is that you…?" She took another step closer.

Her father gave her a smile. "Yes Rin. It's me," he replied.

Tears welled up in Rin's aquamarine eyes. "Father…," she sniffed, "I missed you so much…"

He held his arms open, "Come to me, Rin; my precious little girl."

"Father!" she cried joyfully. Rin ran forward. Suddenly something flashed in her mind; a memory.

Flashback

"Daddy, daddy!" called a young Rin. She was running as fast as her little, short legs could carry her.

A tall man turned and smiled a lovingly smile at his daughter. He crouched down as he could be levelled with his daughter. "What is it, Rin?" he asked.

Rin gave a twirl, making her dress spinning with her. "Mummy made me a new dress!" she giggled.

Her father patted her on the head. "You look beautiful," he commented, "My little rabbit."

End of flashback

Rabbit… He called me 'my little rabbit'… not 'my precious little girl'…that's was his nickname for me, 'my little rabbit'. She skidded to a halt.

Her 'father' looked at her puzzlingly. His smile faded away. "My girl, what's wrong?" he inquired.

"Rabbit…," Rin whispered.

"I beg your pardon?"

"Rabbit," Rin said a little louder, "You always called me a rabbit…Father," she said the last word as if it was now a foreign word. Her 'father' didn't say anything. She fixed him with suspicious eyes. "…You're not my father," she said, "Then who are you?"

A smile came to his face and the man gave a small applause. "Bravo," he smiled, "You have quite a sharp memory. I would have never thought you'd remember a mere nickname that your deceased father gave you."

"Who are you?!" demanded Rin.

"My mission is to eliminate you, Little Red Riding Hood," the man replied coldly. Suddenly a glint of steel caught her eye. A dagger was held in the man's hand. "Now its best not resist, little girl, "smirked the man, "It'll make my job a lot easier."

Rin stared at him with wide, frightened eyes. How could I be fooled by him? It must be the moonlight… also how he impersonates Father's voice and he must be wearing a disguise! Rin swallowed the lump in throat. She closed her eyes. No, I can't be afraid. She opened her eyes, facing the man. Not when he mocked Father's nickname for me! Biting her lip, Rin fixed the man with a hard look.

RINNNN!

Len let out another desperate howl. Suddenly he felt like all the air had been knocked out of his chest. His mind spun wildly as he scanned the dark woods. Curse that fever. If I hadn't fallen ill, I won't be able to reach her much faster.

He tried to use his nose but it was still blocked. A feverish mind wasn't helping Len in this situation. Come on, Len! Think! Where the heck would she be?!

Len remembered Zatsune's words; "History will be repeat."

Suddenly it dawned to him. Her father… died at the… He bolted in a certain direction, praying that the one he cares about is unharmed.

Rin quickly moved aside as the man swiped his blade at her. She stepped on an untied lace of her boots, causing her to stumble and fall to the ground. Rin had to swiftly roll to one side just as the man brought down his knife.

Quickly scrambling to her feet, Rin slipped her hand into one of her boots. Please be there, please be there… Her fingers came into contact with something; a hilt. Yes! She pulled out the object just as the man brought down his dagger again. Sparks flew as the steel of the attacker's dagger clashed with Rin's army knife. She struggled to hold back the weapon as the man exerted more pressure.

"I wouldn't have thought that a sweet girl like you would carry a weapon with you," he sneered.

Clenching her teeth firmly together, Rin was able to force him off. "Well, I guess you underestimated me!" she snapped.

"Don't get cocky," the man mused and suddenly lunged forward. A cry of pain escaped Rin's lips as red flew through the air. She was lucky to have turned but the man was able cut her upper arm, near her shoulder.

Her army knife slipped through her sweaty fingers as she clutched her wound tightly, hoping that the pain would leave if she held it tightly.

"Ha, I did warn you," chuckled the man.

Tears welled up in her eyes but she quickly closed them. No way was she going to cry in front of this man. She quickly bent down, grabbed her knife and charged. The man was taken by surprised by her action. Rin swiftly raised her weapon and brought it down to his chest.

Rei was thrown to the ground. His dagger clattered a metre away from him.

"You fool!" hissed Zatsune as she wiped away blood from a cut on her cheek, "How dare you attack your Mistress!"

Rei gave a groan but fearlessly looked at her, "You're not my mistress anymore!" he declared.

Zatsune's eyes flashed with anger. She snapped her fingers together, sending a red bolt of electricity through Rei's body. He cried out in pain. She then dramatically whipped a pistol and aimed to at the paralysed woodcutter. "That's enough out of you!" she snapped.

Satin ballet slippers raced across the forest floor.

She fingered the trigger. "Useless puppets like you," she spat, "Deserve to die!" Rei's golden eyes widened when he saw the barrel. "Goodbye foolish woodcutter!" she cried.

"Stop!"

A whirlwind of white feathers burst through the area they were in. The whiteness of the feathers became almost blinding in the moonlight. Zatsune shielded herself with her arms. Rei was breathless watching the feathers dancing in the air but the thing that had truly taken his breath away was…the person who was standing in front of him.

Her arms had become wings, spreading out protectively in front of Rei was Rui. Her black feather clip had turned white and her tutu was white but still had black feathers on the rims of her bodice and hems. She stared straight at Zatsune with fearless saffron eyes.

Zatsune lowered her arms and she drew a quick breath when she saw Rui. "….It can't be…," she gasped, "The White Swan, Odette…?" Zatsune then took note of Rui's features. Her eyes narrowed, "No, it's Odile…," she muttered.

"Don't hurt Rei," Rui warned. Her voice was soft yet there was a serious tone to it.

The witch stared at the swan that was reborn. So she was brought back to the story, huh? Interesting… She looked right into those honey gold eyes of Rui. No, it'll be too risky to go against a character that had just been brought back...

Zatsune sniffed and turned away from the two. "This doesn't mean I've given up," she announced and disappeared into the shadows. Rei was released from paralysation. Rui lowered her wings and they morphed back into arms.

She turned to face Rei. "Are you-" She was suddenly cut off when Rei had launched himself forward and embraced Rui. She stared straight ahead with wide eyes.

Rei hugged her tightly. "Rui…," he rasped, trying to keep tears in, "I…I missed you."

Rui's expression softened and she embraced him back. "I missed you too," she smiled as tears too spring in her eyes.

The sound of metal scrapping metal was heard. The man had been quick enough to block her attack. Rin gave a yelp as he threw her back.

"Good try," he smiled, "But really, this is taking too long." He swiftly thrust his arm forward and Rin gave another cry of pain. She had to be quick on her toes otherwise he would have impaled her stomach but the man had gotten her hip. She staggered backwards, groaning in agony.

The man's eyes lit up momentarily. "Now to finish this," he announced.

Distracted by her pain, Rin couldn't fight back. A scream was released when she was pushed off the cliff's edge. Her nightdress flapped in the wind as it whistled past her ears. Tears lifted off into the air from her lashes. No…No! There was a crash and, what felt like, thousands of tiny finger piercing into her skin. She could also feel her life liquid flowing out of her wounds. Her chest heaved in and out before stopping as she took her last breath and blacked out.

Sapphire blue eyes flew open. Rin's mother quickly sat up in her bed. Her breath came out sharp and quick. Something wasn't right, she could feel it. Something happened…something bad, no terrible. She nervously swallowed. The sensation was horrifyingly familiar, just like the time when… She turned to her bedside table. In the moonlight, she could see the family photo. Young Rin beaming happily, herself and… her eyes rested on her late husband.

No…

Len burst through the trees where the cliff face was. It was empty, not a person in sight. No, no… Rin! He planted his nose down to the ground, sniffing desperately as he walked. Nothing, no scent could penetrate his cursed blocked nose. Suddenly he felt something wet on his nose and quickly straightened up. Len licked his nose. (A/N: Yes, haven't you noticed dogs can lick their noses?)

Blood, he tasted blood. Len's eyes grew wide as he scanned the ground. There were splatters of red, shining dimly in the moonlight. He walked around, not taking his eyes off the ground. Apart from small puddles of blood, there were marks where soles of footwear had dug into the dirt. He analysed the direction of the tracks. Len's bones stiffened. Oh no! Please no!

He raced to the edge to the cliff and peered down. It was a long fall… Rin! He turned and raced away. He quickly found the path that led to the bottom of the cliff. This is all too familiar… As if luck was on his side, a wind blew into Len's face clearing his nose for this vital moment.

Len held his nose high in the air, smelling. Deer…rabbit…orange blossom…orange blossom?! Len bolted in the direction of the scent. The smell came from a tree, near the rock face. He can smell blood strongly now. Len raised his head and froze. A limp body was lodged in between branches. The moonlight shone on it, making her skin look porcelain white and hair gold. It also emphasised the red on her white skin.

Rin!

Len placed his front paws on the truck of the tree. Damn it. She's too high. He fell back onto all fours and slowly backed away. This better work. Len charged forward and threw his body weight against the truck. The impact shook the branches overhead, Rin's body shifted a little. Len repeated this action again. Rin's body shifted more. Backing away even more, Len burst forward and threw his entire body onto the truck. Rin's body was dislodged. He quickly ran away from the truck and Rin's body landed on his sturdy back.

He turned his head to face her. Her face was inches away from his nose. A slight breath escaped through her lips. Len breathed a sigh of relief. She alive… He then felt her blood sweeping through his fur. I better get her some medical treatment. Making sure Rin was in a safe position on his back; Len slowly broke into a jog. He had to be careful on how he moved. He didn't want Rin to slip off. Len headed in the direction of the village. I could slip in Rin's bedroom window, hopefully I can open it with her on my back… then I can have a look for some medical supplies for her.

But as he neared the household, he noticed the lights in Rin's bedroom were on. What? She couldn't have left the lights on… Suddenly a figure approached the window. Shoot! He quickly backed away from the window but stood on a dry twig. SNAP! Len cringed and silently cursed the object.

The windows flew open. "Who's there?!" demanded a voice. The light from Rin's room shone on him. Although the light was shining from behind the figure making her face quite difficult to see, Len knew it was Rin's mother. She stared at him with wide eyes. The light had made his azure eyes glow and Rin's bloody body visible.

"You…," she rasped, "You're the wolf…that killed my husband."
