The Wolf who fell in Love with Red Riding Hood
Father
Once upon a time, there lived a man. He wasn't like all the other people in the village. He was different. He didn't fear the things the villagers feared. He didn't fear wolves. That man wished that were peace amongst the two creatures; humans and wolves.
He thought that if two beings could respect on another, that there will be no conflict between the two. Soon he found a love of his life. The two lived happily together but she worried over him about his involvement with wolves.
"It'll be alright," he would say with a smile, "As long as you don't do anything to provoke them and stay a distant, they won't hurt you. Wolves are awe-inspiring creatures; strong and agile. Don't be afraid, my love."
If only he knew that his 'awe-inspiring' creatures would turn against him.
Blue eyes locked into one another as Len stared at Rin's mother who looked at him fearfully. Rin's mother eyes drifted to Rin's bloody body.
She drew in a sharp breath. "What have you done to my daughter?!" she shrieked.
Please madam! I didn't do anything to Rin! But she needs medical assistance! Quickly! Len gave her a desperate look. If Rin continues to be left like this, she would… He didn't dare to think of that possibility.
"…The wolf speaks…," Rin's mother bit her lip. "Fine, come in," she replied and opened the window fully. Len leapt in. He gently allowed Rin to slip off his back onto the floor. Her mother hurried out and to get medical supplies.
Len licked Rin's blood away. There was so red on her, even parts of her golden hair was soaked. Her breathing was a mere breath, in and out with a long pause in between. She was barely alive. Please, please don't let history repeat itself…
Rin's mother returned and quickly treated Rin's wounds. Len had to turn away when she went to treat Rin's hip wound since Rin's nightgown had to be removed. Rin's head, shoulder, chest and hip were wrapped in bandages.
After she finished, Len took a step closer. How is she?
Rin's mother gave him a wary eye before replying, "She's received knife cuts to her shoulder and hip and her head had received a hard impact. She's lost a lot of blood…so she needs to rest. She'll live."
Len let out a sigh of relief. Thank goodness… Rin's mother watched him carefully. Suddenly Len noticed that the sun was peeking from the horizon. I must go. I wish for Rin's full recovery. And he quickly leapt out of the window. Rin's mother strolled over and looked outside, just in time to see Len's transformation.
He's that boy…
Rui helped Rei to lie down in his bed. She made him comfortable and crouched beside his bed.
"Rest," she urged, "You went through a lot."
Rei weakly nodded and closed his eyes. She smiled and stroked his black hair. Suddenly the door of Rei's hut flew open.
"Rei! Rin's hurt! I mean, she's barely alive! And her mother saw me as a wolf! And-"
Len clamped his mouth shut when he saw Rui, blinking at him with her honey gold eyes. Rui slowly raised to her feet then flashed a smile to him.
"Hello Len," she beamed, "It's been a while, huh?"
Len was rendered speechless. "What…How…But…," he stuttered.
"I was reborn Len," Rui replied, "I had a second chance." She shook her head, "Enough of me. What happened, Len? Rin was hurt?"
Len collapsed onto a nearby chair, burying his face in his hands. "Zatsune…Zastune was responsible," he weakly replied. He ran his clawed hand through his blonde locks. "History repeated itself…," he muttered.
"I beg your pardon?" Rui walked over to the wolf, "What do you mean by that statement? And how does Zatsune come into this?"
He looked up, locking his azure eyes with her honey eyes. "Because Zatsune knows…that I killed Rin's father."
Rui's eyes widened, "What…?"
"Mummy?" called young Rin as she tugged on the skirt of her mother's dress. "Where's Daddy? He should be home by now."
Her mother looked at her with sad eyes filled with grief. She crouched down so she could be the same level as Rin. She stroked Rin's hair then her cheek.
"I'm sorry Rin," she sniffed as tears welled up in her eyes, "Daddy isn't coming home anymore."
Being young, Rin didn't understand. She looked at her mother with innocent eyes. She cocked her head naively. "Why?" she asked.
Her mother's hand on her cheek trembled. "He's… he's gone, Rin…," she choked, "He's gone…"
Rin's eyes flew open. She felt hot and the blankets seem to cling to her body. Her body… it felt as if it's made of lead; all heavy and stiff. Also her head felt as if it weighed a ton. She tried to sit up but pain shoot through her body, making her give up.
"What happened…?" she whispered. Suddenly memories flash across her mind; that man who pretended to be her father, their fight, her knife wounds, she falling off the cliff…
A cold sweat crept up onto Rin. Falling off a cliff… just like… Voices were suddenly heard.
"May we see her?"
"Of course, she's in her room."
Rin heard her bedroom door creak open. "Little Red Riding opened the door…It creaked, allowing her to see her grandmother in bed…"
"She's awake!" cried a familiar high-pitch voice. Miku's cheerful face came to Rin's view. "Rin-chan, how are you feeling?" she asked as her face turned to concern.
"Miku?" rasped Rin, "What are you-"
Suddenly there was a thump at the end of Rin's bed. "Rinny!" Meiko's face then appeared beside Miku's. Her redish-brown eyes were filled with disbelief and fear. "I heard you fell off a cliff!"
"M-Meiko…?"
"I knew you were clumsy," Neru said who was standing at Rin's bed end with a piece of Pocky in her mouth, "But I didn't know you were THAT clumsy."
"Um…er…," stuttered Rin.
"Girls," Rin's mother appeared by the doorway, "Please…Rin just woke up." The three princesses quickly took a step back from Rin's bed, giving her some space.
"Thank you for coming to visit me," Rin smiled, "You're good friends."
Miku kneeled beside her bed. "Rin-chan, is it true that you fell off a cliff?" she asked, her voice filled with worry and fear.
Rin stared at her friend. Both their eyes locked into one another. "Miku…," Rin whispered.
"Yes it's true," her mother sighed, "Rin did fall off a cliff." The princesses gasped. "But a boy saved her," her mother continued.
Rin looked at her. A boy? Could it be…?
"He brought Rin here so she could be treated. If he didn't…Rin probably wouldn't be alive now," finished Rin's mother.
The princesses and Rin stared at the woman. She had a thoughtful look in her eyes. They all had good suspicions of who the boy is.
Rin looked at of her window. Len…
Zatsune sat at her desk, flipping through papers that were spilt out from a vamilla folder. A faded 'K' was printed on its crinkled, cream surface. Suddenly Zatsune's ruby red eyes lit up when she came across a certain document.
"Find it~" she cooed. She scanned the paper and smirked then laid it onto her desk. It was an old clipping of a newspaper. There was a blurry black and white photo of some beast and the headlines read 'Wolf Attack! Beloved Villager Killed!'
"A wolf always gets the blame," she muttered as she strolled over to a coat hanger. "Of course, the role of a Big Bad Wolf isn't given for a reason."
Zastune ran her slender hand along Zeito's hunting coat. Suddenly she dramatically pulled her hand back, holding a tuft of dirty brown hair.
"But the wolf isn't only a creature of destruction," she whispered, "There are many other beasts that exist in the shadows." She then walked over to a table with glass beakers filled of different colour liquids.
"With the right method…you can bring those creatures of darkness back to life." With a smile of evil, the witch dropped the tuft of fur into a beaker.
A/N: For thoses who haven't realize the creature from chapter 4, the one who attacked Rin, got hunted down by Zeito in chapter 5. So basically it's dead until now...
"He befriended me. The kindest human being I've ever met ever since I took the role of the wolf," Len recounted, "He didn't shun me, he didn't shout abuse to me… He was like…Rin."
Rui sat on another chair in front of Len, listening to his tale.
"Because of how he treated me, I fooled myself to think that all humans were like this. We formed a strong friendship. Called me 'his friend' and 'partner'. He was the first to know my true identity. It happened when he woke at sunrise to check on my health when I caught a small cold."
A small smile came to Len's pale face as the nostalgic memory crossed his mind. Rui's heart sank slightly when she caught the sight of his eyes. There was a dreamy look in them however a haze of sadness clouded them.
"It was a foggy, wet night," Len's voice dropped low and husky, "He was worried about me. If only he didn't worry too much then he could be still alive. Or should I blame myself for my clumsiness? I still haven't recovered from that flu…and weather's conditions were harsh; heavy rain and damp fog. My senses were blurred…I wondered to the cliff face. He found me. If only I wasn't sick, then I could have alerted him. We were attacked."
"By what..?" Rui rasped.
"A werewolf, a mad one. It was terribly skinny…you could see the shape of its bones underneath. Foul brown fur covered its body. Its eyes were blood-shot and it was snarling, hissing for the taste of human flesh. The fog concealed our fight. I fought with all the energy I had. He could merely watch."
Len's face had whitened and his eyes were wide. Rui had never seen him like this before. He dug his fingers deeper into his skull.
"I was concentrating on the fight so much, I lost consideration of him. The fight moved in on him... and all he could do is to back away, towards the cliff's edge." There was a long pause. "I...I accidently knocked him," those words were a mere whisper, "To his death..."
Rui draw in a soft breath. His hands fell onto his lap. A minute passed before Len found his voice.
"As soon as I realised what happened, I delivered a last attack to the creature; a menacing swipe across its hideous face and raced down to the bottom of the cliff. His body was limp and lifeless and was ghostly white in the moonlight. A pool of crimson ran from his head," Len swallowed. His voice had become shaky.
"That must have been a terrible sight...," Rui whispered.
"It was...," Len rasped, "To see your best friend like that. Same goes for the person whom you care very much about," he clasped his clammy hands together, "If only I was more aware... If only I didn't fall ill... Then Rin would have her father with her still."
"How did you know that he was Rin's father?" Rui quietly asked.
"Her personality," Len replied almost instantly, "She also has his eyes... When Zatsune gave me the hint...I knew immediately. I hope Rin's alright."
The swan watched as the wolf closed his eyes, allowing a tear to fall down his cheeks.
Reviving the creature that was a cause of history's event... Will the whole story repeat itself again? Will the characters repeat the tragedy that was written long ago? Only time will tell my friends... Only time will tell...
