The Wolf who fell in Love with Little Red Riding Hood
A Meeting with Smiles
An author was stumped on how to spin her tale successfully. One day, a girl approached the author with the promise of making the still story move once more. However, there was a price; to allow the girl the entrance to the world within the tale.
The writer obliged, unaware of the girl's desire to stain the white pages of the tale with blood. Now with the interference gone, the author stares at her tainted work. An illustration of a devastated wolf can be seen. Only a single last page remains clean, the last page.
How a happy ending take place with all characters gone and the incapability of continuing a story that has already ended?
Unless…
A mist cloaked the moist earth, covering the bodies of the dead as if attempting to bury them. Its misty fingers clung to the soaked clothes of Len. He still held onto the cold corpse of Rin, refusing to give her away to the ghost like hands of the mist. The wolf slowly looked up. His azure eyes had lost their light and dark shadows hung underneath them. He no longer had any tears to shed.
That was when he saw it, dimly illuminating amongst the fog. The small faint light spoke of warmth.
Hesitantly, he stretched a cold clawed hand towards it and grabbed it. It was a pearl, the size of a tennis ball. It had the faint smell of sea water but the dominant scent was of cherries, Zatsune's scent. It must have rolled out of her jacket when she fell… It felt warm in his cold hands but nothing could replace the warmth of his love.
"Rin…" Len croaked. Oh, what he would do to get her back.
Suddenly the light from the pearl intensifies, until it was like the rays of a miniature sun. The light enveloped the wolf.
Then, there was only white.
Azure eyes fluttered open. Len jolted up to find himself in an endless white. Where am I? He stood up and looked around. White stretched out for miles. There was no sound, no smell, no one in sight.
Len looked down; even the floor was white making it seem as if he's not standing on anything at all. That was when he realised Rin was no longer in his arms. Panic erupted in him.
"Rin?! RIN?!" Disorientated, he scanned the area for the precious girl.
"You have no means to panic Len."
A voice echoed through the space. He spun around, there was no there. The white was making his head spin. "W…Who's there?"
"That is not important instead the question that must be asked is this: what is your wish?"
Len blinked, "My wish?" he repeated, "What do you mean by that?"
"The pearl you grabbed is a mechanism that allows one to grant any wish they desire."
"Any wish…?" Realisation struck the wolf, "I wish all innocent lives to be restored!"
"I'm deeply sorry Len, although the wish is possible, it isn't the wisest in this situation."
His heart sank, "Why…?"
"Once a story is penned down, it cannot be changed. If a character dies within the story and is resurrected, they will live that tragic story over again until they fall once more. It's like a wheel, there's no way out of it."
Len's eyes widen. Rin dying over and over again? That's even worse than just having her die once! And since he was the only character that survived that ill-fated tale that would mean… He will bear witness Rin's death over and over again. The wolf fell to his knees.
The voice had fallen silent.
Moments ticked by. Slowly an idea began to develop in Len's mind. Should I…? But it's risky. I don't know what will happen afterwards. Will she remember? Will I remember? Len's clenched his hands together. This might be the only way… He slowly rose to his feet.
"I've decided on a wish," he boldly declared.
"And what is your wish?"
He took a breath, "I wish for this story to be rewritten."
The voice said nothing.
"…For the story to be reset to the beginning so that the characters are free once more because they can write their own story instead of living to their grim designated fate… So everyone can be happy once more!" Len gave a pause, "Please fulfil my wish, and let the true author pen down their story!"
As soon as those words left his lips, the entire area glowed to a blinding whiteness.
When Len opened his eyes, he found himself in another dimension. He was floating in a sea of pages. Pen-written words lined the place.
"Where am I now?" he muttered.
Suddenly the pages around him started to flap then flip past him in a fast pace. The papery sound surrounds him until the voice spoke again.
"Once upon a time there lived a girl who dressed in rags. In a strange twist of Fate she was able to attend a royal ball by the help of her fairy godmother. The girl and the prince fell for one another and were reunited by the single glass slipper."
"However…"
"When the girl took to the throne with her husband, the first order she gave was the execution of her step-family. Soon she grew into a ruthless ruler with her husband having no power against her."
"No…I don't want that!" cried a familiar voice. Len turned around and saw Miku in the distance. She had her eyes closed and hands clutched together in a prayer. "I don't want to be like the true Cinderella! I want everyone to be happy, to be treated kindly," she opened her eyes, "And that's what I will do!"
Miku faded away and Zatsune appeared in her place, facing away from Len. "You wish for happiness and equality," she spoke, "I wish for vengeance; vengeance that requires the spillage of blood… You will be the first to fall then Cinderella." Zatsune then too disappeared.
Len blinked, "What's going on?" he muttered to himself. That was when he realized the direction of the flipping pages. They were flipping backwards. Could it be…? Am I seeing how the story started? How all the characters came to be?
The wolf stood in the midst of the story, watching how each of the characters are determined to change their character's lifestyle; Meiko's refusal to be fragile like the original Snow White, Neru's yearning to venture out and do something instead of waiting…
Rei and Rui appeared next, each facing away from one another.
"I…I don't want to shed blood with my own hands," the woodcutter's voice was soft and uncertain, "I want to be heroic but in order to be a hero, would that mean I must kill?"
The black swan placed her hands on her chest. "They say Odile tricked Siegfried into loving her thus causing him to proclaim his love to her." A single tear fell from her closed eyes. "But what if Odile's love is real?"
They too disappeared. Len watched them with sympathy. Kaito slowly came into view.
"I'll protect the one that I love most," vowed the prince, "I protect you from anything that causes you pain, that includes your dark past. I'll shelter you from the darkness."
The huntsman then appeared behind the prince. "I want to protect the one I love too," Zeito proclaimed, "However in order to do that I must be evil… Even so, I don't mind because it's for you."
Pages whirred around the wolf in a crazed manner. The vows of each characters overlapped one another until it become a low buzz. Len stumbled. His head spun. His ears drooped under the weight of the noises. Len squeezed his eyes shut.
Then it stopped.
Silence became dominant until someone spoke.
"I don't want to someone who merely runs errands."
Len's azure eyes slowly opened.
"I want to be free, experience new things, and meet new people."
He straightened up.
"I want to love as well… and be loved."
Len turned. A red figure stood a few metres away from him. Is that…?
"And last of all, I want to show everyone that wolves can be loved."
He raced up and hugged her from behind. A gasp escaped her lips as his arms wrapped around her small torso. Her orange blossom scent filled his nose. "Rin!" he sobbed.
"L…Len?" She turned and her aquamarine eyes met his azure ones. Her heart brimmed with happiness. "Len!" she exclaimed then returned his embrace with tears streaming down.
The two sank down to their knees amongst the words of the story, holding each other in their arms. Rin looked up at Len. "How could I see you..? Didn't I…?" she paused, "What happened…?"
"I made a wish," he whispered, "And now the story is being reversed until it is back to the start, to be re-written."
"Re-written..?" echoed Rin, "You mean everything that has happened, all the deaths… all the grief… are being erased?"
Len nodded.
"But wouldn't that mean… Wouldn't that mean all the moments we had together are being erased too?" she choked.
He gravely nodded.
Tears filled Rin's eyes. "No…" she softly cried, "I don't want that… Even though they were small moments, I still cherish them…"
She still remembered them; the first time they meet when Len was a wolf who was caught in a steel trap, the constant visits to him and the time when he first appeared to her as a human. Those times although she was scared and unsure were the stepping stones for her feelings to grow deeper. He had always loved her, he always protected her and through hard times he was always there. Every moment they had together was precious…
The words around them started to fade.
Len stroked her silky gold hair reassuringly. "I cherish them too," he smiled, "But…" He made Rin look into his eyes. "Kagamine Rin, do you really love me?"
Aquamarine eyes widened. A blush came to her cheeks and she shyly nodded, "Yes. Yes, I do love you Len."
His face softened. The pages are now disappearing around them. "Then when we do meet again Rin, in the new story, I'll fall in love with you again and make you fall for me too."
Rin's aquamarine eyes widened and she blushed a shade deeper. A small smile creep onto her lips and she gave another nod.
White now surrounded the two. Their bodies now glowed and were fading away. Len held Rin close to him and she embraced his warmth. The two shared a soft and tender kiss.
"Len?"
"Yes, Rin?"
"I love you."
"I love you too."
And with that, Red Riding Hood and the Wolf dispersed into small pages.
Once upon a time…
Birds were hopping about amongst the branches of a tree, chirping a joyful song. The sun was shining in the blue skies with lazy clouds drifting by. The sunlight shone through a window of a bedroom. The bed was neatly made with a bunny rag doll beside the pillow.
A blank sketch pad laid on the wooden surface of the desk. A vase containing a branch of orange blossoms towered over the sketch pad. Books were neatly stacked at one corner of the desk. Two photo frames stood at the back of the desk; one containing a photo of a happy family while the other contained a sketch of a creature.
A wolf.
There was movement in the room and the sound of material rustling was heard before the creak of a door opening followed by footsteps.
Leather boots were placed on the wooden floor before they were slipped on. Red material was draped across petite shoulders. Slender fingers secured the pins that were holding a golden fringe.
"Rin!" called a voice.
A girl turned revealing aquamarine eyes and a crop of gold hair cut short. She was wearing a red hood. "Yes Mother?"
"Don't forget the apples," reminded a woman who had the same long blonde hair as her daughter yet her eyes were emerald green.
Rin laughed as she pulled out a small piece of paper from the basket that was around her arm. "Don't worry Mother. I wrote the grocery all down!" she smiled. She was about to leave when the front door opened.
A tall shadow was cast over Rin and she looked up. A muscular man towered over her. His crop of brown hair was windswept and messy. His bright blue eyes were sharp but immediately softened when they fell upon Rin. A warm smile formed on his lips.
"Hello my rabbit," laughed the man as he affectionately patted her on the head.
"Father…," smiled Rin, "Welcome back. You took your time."
He laughed as he rubbed the back of his neck, "Well the hens put up a quite a fight today but I managed to get six." At that, he held up a small bucket.
Mother clicked her tongue from behind Rin and shook her head but she had a smile on her face. Rin's Father moved over and kissed her on the cheek.
"Well I'm off now," Rin announced as she went through the front door.
"Take care Rin," her Mother replied.
"Oh Rin!" her Father called.
The girl turned and blinked.
"Can you get some oranges too?" he smiled.
Rin laughed and nodded before heading towards the market.
The marketplace was bustling with people. Rin expertly weaved her way through the crowd, often pausing between the stalls to purchase the groceries. When she checked her list to ensure she had everything, Rin returned home. Then she ventured back out to enjoy the fine day.
In the town square, the fountain sparkled in the sunlight and laughter of children filled the air. They were kicking a ball about. Rin watched from a far and when she spotted a girl with long teal ponytails playing with the children, she waved.
Miku paused for a moment to wave back to her friend. She was dressed in a dark brown dress with an apron around her waist and a white bandana tied over her head. "Hello Rin!" she called out, "Do you want to join us?"
"I'm fine thank you Miku!" Rin called back.
Suddenly the ball flew past Miku and attempted to catch the ball but failed. Miku raced after ball in pursuit. The ball rolled up and stopped when it came into contact with fine leather shoes. Hands bent down and picked the ball up.
Miku stopped and stared as she watched the man hand the ball to her. He had dark blue hair and eyes which capture the blueness of the ocean. He wore an attire of the royal family. "Is this yours?" he kindly asked.
Miku shyly nodded and took the ball from his hands and bowed. The man followed Miku back to the square. "R-Rin," Miku stammered, "This Kaito, um, he's a friend of mine. Kaito, this is Kagamine Rin."
Rin quickly bowed, "Your Highness."
Kaito bowed his head in Rin's direction. After a short conversation, Rin left Miku, Kaito and the children as they resume their game.
"Aaah…" The smooth surface of a macaroon was broken as teeth sunk into the sweet. A girl with sandy brown hair tied into a single side ponytail sat at a table underneath an umbrella. A bowl of various sweets sat in front of her. Her hooded eyes were scanning pages of a graphic novel.
"Hi Neru," greeted Rin, "Where's Meiko?"
Neru looked up. "Yo Rin," she yawned, "Meiko? Oh she's over there." Neru stretched before pointing in a certain direction.
A woman with brown hair cut beneath her ears was standing at the entrance of the weapon shop. She was having a deep conversation with the blacksmith who was a young man. He was holding a slim crossbow in his hands and they seemed to be discussing the different parts of the weapon.
"She's been talking for a while," said Neru, "Enough for me to finish two volumes."
"So you're planning to wait for her?" Rin asked.
"Yep," replied Neru, "Besides I got enough to keep me preoccupied." She tapped a stack of manga with her foot that sat underneath her chair.
Rin laughed nervously, "Okay. I'll leave you to your reading then."
Neru waved to her friend as she left then turned back to her book.
Rin ventured into the forest as the sun rose higher into the sky. The overgrowth of leaves and branches of the tress provided a cool shelter from the hot afternoon rays. The forest path was speckled from the shadow of the trees.
Occasionally a rabbit would hop out of the bushes onto the path before darting into the other side. Birds sang overhead and cicadas buzzed along. Rin loved the forest; the environment would be quiet and tranquil and it was calming to watch the animals go along their business.
She visited a lake and to her amazement saw a ballet performance with a girl and a boy dressed in black and white. They were dancing out in the middle of the lake, on the water's surface as if it was glass.
They had gold eyes and were so entranced by one another, Rin felt guilty if she called out to them so she watched from the bank until the dance finished with the pair holding each other in their arms, where she left them in silence.
Rin returned back to the forest path and continued her stroll. The path split into two and she took to the left. The forest was lusher here. Scents of flowers and the earth reached her nose. Rin stopped and closed her eyes, allowing a gentle breeze to cascade over her. Her hood flapped gently.
Suddenly a strong gust of wind made her eyes snap open. And that's when she saw it.
That's when she saw him.
A boy with blonde hair tied into a small ponytail and a spiky fringe laid stretched out underneath the shade of an oak. Brown furry ears protruded out of his golden crop and a bushy tail lay beside him.
Rin stood there, with wide eyes staring at this boy. Her mouth was a small 'o'. One of his ears twitched and his eyes slowly opened. Rin's breath was taken away by how blue they were; azure blue.
He slowly sat up and stared back at her. Another breeze blew once more, a gentle one, across the two.
Somewhere in a dark dimension is where a girl stood. She watched an orb of light which reflected a wolf boy and a girl in red, slowly drawing closer to one another, watching each other in curiosity.
Her ruby red eyes had a far-away look. "They met again, even though they had no memories of the past story. Their vowed to meet again and now here they are," she muttered, "Is that what they call love?"
She looked down at her hands. "I ended many innocent lives due to unrequited love… I didn't allow myself to recover… Instead I merely dwell on the pain and that pain grew to anger… I planned to wish for the tragic story to replay…"
She looked back up to the orb. It now showed the different characters who all had smiles on their faces; a mother who lost her love was reunited, a prince and commoner met by a pure meeting not by an assassination quest, two princesses enjoying life and two lonely hearts are together in dance.
As Zatsune replayed the events of the past story, she slowly realised something. "He was always there as well. He did everything for me despite them being…" She slowly sank to her knees, "I never gave him a chance… Yet he died for me…"
A hand gently rested on her shoulder and Zatsune jolted. Zeito quietly smiled at her as he helped her to her feet. "Will you give me a chance now then?" he whispered.
Her eyes widened, "How are you…?"
"We are not fictional characters," he explained, "We have merely crossed into the world of fiction from reality and became characters of a story. We 'died' as those characters but we're still alive as humans."
"Zeito…," whispered Zatsune, "I'm sorry…"
"I know," he smiled, "Come." He took her hand. "Let's return back our world."
She gave him a small smile and both of them walked away from the orb, hand in hand. They didn't look back.
Aquamarine and azure stared into one another. The boy now had stood up. Rin slowly took another step closer to him. She didn't know but she wanted to know more about this boy.
Suddenly he smiled at her. Her heart jumped and she blushed. Then she gave him a small smile.
And so a new story began…
Although the book has now closed, it doesn't mean the story is finished. The characters still live on, they live on in the pages, they continue to pen down their own story. They also live on in the reader's mind. So my follow readers, whether a story ends with 'Happily Ever After' or merely 'The End', let the characters still live on in your imagination. If you do that, then the story will never end.
True End
That's it.
Yep, that's it.
