Chapter 8 – Eternity
Naru was getting impatient, while staring at the monitors, he glanced at Gene and then to Mai. He sighed, it's been two hours since they both collapsed and he's starting to get worried not for his brother, but for Mai. He reversed his stoic feature when the other members came back from their work that he assigned to them.
"Naru, you shouldn't bring Mai with us if she will only sleep for more than two hours" Masako said, and glanced at Mai.
"It's the same as saying that I shouldn't bring Gene with us next time" He said back, without leaving his eyes on the monitor
"Gene is different, he's having a vision" she defended
"And the same as Mai"
They all look at the door and saw Akira with a tray of cookies that Mai made earlier at the office, she placed the tray on the table and she glared at Masako.
"At least Mai is a reliable medium than you, she even know whether the spirit is a man or a woman. Unlike you, who don't know how to separate work from personal relationship, and always clinging at Naru like a child who's afraid to be separated from her father" she paused when she heard someone snickered "I really doubt your relationship from the start, are you sure you didn't blackmail him?" she asked.
A collective gasped was heard from the room. Masako went rigid and blanched for a moment, she clutched Naru's arm and glared at him. She heard him groaned.
"Don't talk to her like that Yukimura-san" Akira raised her eyebrow at him. He doesn't sound angry, he sounds as if he doesn't care at all and only said it just for a show. She tried not to smirk, and shrugged.
"Whatever. But you know Shibuya-san, you don't look like someone who is so low and will be blackmailed easily." She commented before she leave the room.
Mai groaned and blinked before she finally opened her eyes, she looked beside her and saw Gene yawning. She tried to stand but she felt her head is still floating at the astral plane. Then she felt a hand trying to massage her head.
"Easy" Gene said as he continue to massage her head. She smiled from what he's doing, it made her feel better.
"Thanks" she replied.
Naru cleared his throat to get their attention (and to cover his envy) "It seems that the two of you is awake now, care to tell us what did you see?"
Mai rolled her eyes "Geez Naru, can you give us a minute or two? Where still trying to recall what we saw"
Bou-san went beside Mai and pat her head "Of course jou-chan, take your time" she smiled at monk.
"We can't waste another minutes, the two of you slept for two hours and now you want to us wait for another minute?" Masako hissed.
"We are not just sleeping Masa–"
"'Hara-san', I told you not to call me so casually by my first name Taniyama-san" Masako cut her words off. Mai rolled her eyes at her childishness.
"Right. We are not just sleeping Hara-san, we are also gather useful information regarding the case"
Masako covered her mouth as she glared at the new member.
"Oh. So you can also do what Gene can do?" Yasu curiously asked
She nodded.
"Before I forgot" Gene pronounced, he looked at Lin "Lin, can you please help Mai train her ability? It seems that the spirit can tug her spirit to the astral plane, and yet, she's untrained"
"No need to trouble Lin, I can personally trained her" Naru sharply said, and glance at Gene only to see the teasing smirk of her brother. That idiot, he did it on purpose! He glared at him "Now, your dreams"
The team learned that the man that the people always saw chasing an airplane named Dan. One year ago, he fell in love with the girl named Mika, although they are equal when it comes to social status, the parents of both sides didn't agree in their relationship. One night, Dan's parents have an evil scheme, they throw out a party, and waited for their son to get drunk. And when he's already sleeping peacefully in his room, he didn't know that his parents paid a girl who will sleep next to him, so it will look like he's sleeping with another girl, and he's cheating.
The next morning, when Mika went to Dan's room, and saw him with another girl, she ran away crying. Dan tried to chase her but he still has a hung-over from last night party. Moments later he confronted his parents about what happened and why there's a girl sleeping next to him.
"You didn't remember anything?" is what all they say.
He went to the Mika's house but a more heartbreaking news awaited him – she's gone, she went to Paris and will never go back to Japan. He hurriedly went to the airport hoping that he will still catch her, but fate is cruel for both of them, the plane bound for Paris is ready for take off. He force his self to go to the runway, and chase the plane, and there he saw her sitting on the window side, and crying! He definitely saw him crying! He run, he called her name, until the plane leaves the ground. He was panting, and crying, shouting her name, when the guards and the personnel went towards him.
He went home and there he saw the girl who slept next to him, without a second thought he yanks her, and gripped her hands.
"Who ordered you to sleep in my room?" he angrily asked.
When the girl didn't answer, he tighten his grip and saw her winced.
"Who?!" he shouted at her.
With teary eyes, she answered "Your mother"
Dan widened his eyes from her answer, and let go of her hands. He ran his fingers thru his hair, he screamed – a screamed of anger.
It's already evening when he's parents arrived from work, and he immediately confronted his mother – who proudly admitted what she have done.
"Why? Why did you do that mom?" he raised his voice
His mother raised her eyebrow "Because I don't like that girl. End of argument." She plainly answered.
She was about to go upstairs when a certain international news caught their attention. "…flight 5J892 from Japan bound for Paris exploded earlier when the plane was about to land…"
His whole body trembled when he saw the news, he slowly turned to his mother, with a trembling voice he asked.
"Mom tell me it's not your doing!" he shouted
"Dan! Watch your words! Your mother is not a murderer!" his father shouted back
His mother glance at him "Of course not! I didn't even know that she went to Paris" and she went upstairs followed by his father.
He went to his room, and watched the news again. Tears keep flowing from his eyes when the reporter said that it's only a miracle if someone can survive from such tragedy.
Mika is gone. The only phrase that his mind was saying.
He went to his drawer, pull out a gun, put the silencer on it. And pull the trigger.
Mai was amazed on how they cleansed the spirit, she saw Lin made a wood effigy with Mika's name on it and formed into Mika. Dan's spirit explained everything to Mika's spirit - about his parents' scheme. The two of them finally be able to be with each other – 'til eternity.
All the equipment are packed. And they are preparing to take off.
"Thank you so much Mr. Shibuya!" the Wakkanai Airport manager bow at Naru when he is about to enter the plane.
"It's nothing. And thank you for your cooperation" Naru answered.
Akira closed the door. And heard his brother's voice saying to get ready for the take off.
She yawned.
Finally, they can go home to Tokyo.
