Late afternoon in the Gaming Corner at the College "Hub".
Andy walked through the graveyard of virtually comatose people, their gravestones reading, "Acer, Asus, HP, Dell, etc."
There were a few people up surfing the web using "old-school" fingertips, studying for midterms, or chatting about news, whether social or otherwise.
Andy was surprised to see his friend with her SNC off. "Cathy! Why aren't you gaming right now? Got tired of S4?"
Cathy turned, "No, S4 is still fun. Just doing research."
Andy was surprised. "On what?"
"Oh, air hugging. It looks like a very useful trick."
"Haha, only that? Why not more useful stuff? Like wavedashing, platform sniping, and, oh I-don't-know, your Government and Calculus midterm."
"One, I have already studied for those midterms. Gonna ace like a boss. Are those more techniques? Do you know any shortcut jumps?"
Andy was pulling out his laptop. "Yeah. Just Google 'S4 League Tricks.' There should be a forum page with all the known techniques and maybe even jumps. But to know 'em is one thing. To be able to do 'em is another. Jumps are kinda freestyle; it's up to you to make up."
"Thanks Andy. Now let me study for my "midterms" in peace." Cathy turned back to her laptop, switching between class notes and forum pages.
Andy booted up his Acer laptop. Logging into his email, he found a curious piece of school news.
"Hey Andy." Jill woke up from her game of Portal 1/0.
"Hi Jill. Did you get one of these?"
Jill took a peek, "Hmm.. No. I didn't check my email all day today. Hey Cathy! Did you see this?"
Cathy turned to Andy's laptop. "No, I didn't. What is it?"
Andy read aloud. "March XX, 20XX: Computer Science and Game Design Meeting in Ballroom C. Guest Speaker Darius "Phoenix" Nightwatch will come to discuss computer game development. See you all there!"
Cathy was perplexed, "So? What's so great about this Nightwatch guy?"
Andy explained, "He is a rising game designer, pushing for better designs to make F2P games more balanced between the paying players and the free players, without dropping the games' income. It's win-win. He's been responsible for the creation of new games and also the revitalization of old ones. He's one of the new gamemasters of S4 League. He's pretty much one of the main reason S4 is still around."
Cathy thought a little. "Hmm maybe he can show me a couple of tricks, and maybe tell me what happened in the training simulation. Maybe he can explain why I have those semis. I hope he won't ban me."
Andy thought about it. "I don't think he would. One, they aren't hacked in by you. Two, he is one of the more lenient GMs in S4. He does ban hackers for the usual hacks, ya' know, inf ammo, etc. But he either ignores or temporarily bans players who simply hacks in skins."
Cathy declared, "Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!"
And thus, the trio went to the meeting. After an hour of the presentation, discussion, and questions from wide-eyed upcoming game designers, the three approached the speaker. He appeared to be no older than a grad student, dressed in dark jeans and a blazer.
Cathy introduced herself, "Hello Dr. Nightwatch. I am Cathy. These are my friends Andy and Jill."
"Please, call me Darius. I have no doctorate; I'm only a game designer. What do you need? Planning to make your own games?"
Cathy smiled, "No, not yet. My friend Andy here told me that you are a GM on S4 League, I was wondering if you can teach me a couple of tricks."
"After a boring lecture like that? Sure thing. Let me collect my stuff first." Darius started collecting his notes and laptop.
Andy jumped in, "Brilliant presentation, Darius. I must say, I will implement your concepts in a game I plan to make."
Darius laughed, "My presentation wasn't that brilliant. It's only common sense." He sighed, "I wish people would stop titling me as "Brilliant" or "Genius." I only got to where because I felt like following my dream. I have ADW. I am only (A)ble to (D)o what I (W)ant to do."
"Hey, that's from 'Denpa Kyoushi'!" Jill exclaimed.
"Good to know that there is a fellow otaku." Darius shouldered his bag. "What are we waiting for? Let's go!"
