Last time we finished up Virmire and Commander Vanyali Shepard was forced to make a very difficult decision when the CryNet Phantom teams of Raptor and Serpent along with Wraith were ambushed by geth forces using a never before seen nanosuit jammer, at the same time that Ashley Williams and Kaidan Alenko were attacked by overwhelming geth forces in two different areas. Eventually coming to a decision Commander Shepard rescued the Phantoms and left the two Alliance Soldiers along with their Salarian teams to die to either the geth or the Nuclear bomb that they planted.

The cold hard metal floor was unsympathetic, a slight irregularity in the steel had resulted in a small bump just where her right hand was lying, supporting her weight. The knot was digging into the bone of her wrist rather uncomfortably, yet she couldn't summon the energy to shift her hand. And so she sat on the cold floor, the lump digging into her hand, her armor pinching slightly as she stared at the image of the crew that she had taken just a few days before. Of all the men and women on that image, Six of them would not be making it back to earth. She dimly heard her door slid open and closed, saw the figure enter and sigh upon seeing her. The phantom raised her hands to her helmet and twisted it slightly pulling it off with a soft hiss. She let her short red hair free as the almost identical face of Maela Shepard came into view. She sat down next to her twin pulling her close.
Vanyali was the first to speak "PFCs Bart Dove, Alexander Bourke, Justice Sharrat, Giuseppa Larson. Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams, Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko." Letting out a long ragged breath she finally shifted from her previous position, lifting her hand from its uncomfortable position to bring it up to her face where it joined her left hand. "Damnit. It feels like I killed them. I made the choice, I decided to save you instead of them. I made the right choice though two phantom teams… I mean at the time I didn't even know that the salarians would manage to make it to us. I was choosing the option where less lives would be saved but-" She slammed her fist against the cold unyielding floor.
Maela pulled her sister closer to her "The entire situation was FUBAR. Yes one could argue that from the standpoint of amount of lives, it would have been a better choice to go after Williams and the Salarians, but I have to say this Yali." She gently grabbed her sister by the shoulders and turned her to stare directly at her "I am very thankful that you saved me. And I can with confidence say that the rest of Serpent, Raptor and Wraith are all just as thankful. And while others may criticise you for the choice you made, saying that you should have gone to save more lives, what would that say about you as a human? Who let your own sister die? Your loved ones? People have this fantasized image of heroes in myths and legends. Men and Women who always do the right thing. Are selfless and help others no matter the cost to them. Yet I find that the galaxy is not that black and white. Its hard coded into us as humans to protect those close to us and while some might say that a good "hero" puts everyone on equal level, that's an unrealistic ideal at the best of times."
Vanyali turned away from her to look back at the picture of the crew. "It was just like Akuze." She said quietly " Me leading a unit into the unknown after Elysium. The brass thought I could do no wrong, hell it got to me a little bit. Then the Thresher maws hit. Tore everyone except for me and as I later learned, Corporal Toombs to shreds. Nothing that I could have done and yet you know how I was after that."
Maela nodded as her sister continued "Elysium taught me strength and pride. Akuze taught me survival and humility. Torfan taught me leadership and ruthlessness. Virmire has taught me something, I just don't know what yet."
"You will. You didn't understand what you learned from Elysium and Akuze until a few days after you were released from Akuze. I fully believe that you will rise from this stronger than ever before."
Vanyali drew in a ragged breath and stood, drawing upon the last remnants of her strength. "I need to report in to the council. They'll want to know what happened on the planet."
Maela raised an eyebrow "You sure you're up to it? I sure that they can wait for a little while."
Vanyali shook her head "I don't want to put this off. They need to know about Sovereign so that they can prepare."
"Alright but after you're done with that get some rest. And no it's not an option you will get some rest after that."
"Yeah ok."
"Promise?"
"I promise." Vanyali said seriously.
"Well then, go debrief the council then come right back here." Maela said standing and clapping her sister on her shoulder and turning to leave.
"I just need to get out of my armor first though." Vanyali said turning to the locker on the wall. "I'll be right out."

I cast a glance out of the med bay window over at Vanyali's quarters on the other side of the ship. Her sister had entered a few minutes ago and so I had decided to wait before entering, seeing that she was a better person to be talking to her at the moment, being her sister and knowing her better than I did. I glanced back over at where Chakwas was working on Prophet, I was supposed to be helping her with my expertise on the nanosuit, but so far Chakwas had shown quite a bit of knowledge on the subject. No doubt she had spent hours familiarizing herself with the nanosuit's medical capabilities ever since the incidents on Edolus and Therum.
"How's he doing?"
I looked toward the door to see Maela walk through, her helmet and mask held in her hands. "He should be alright." I answered. "Dr. Chakwas managed to get him stabilized before suit functions kicked back in."
"I've done what I could." The elderly doctor said, sinking into the chair at her desk with a weary sigh. "He'll pull through just fine now that his suit is back online, but it was a pretty close call. Far closer than it should have been."
"Agreed. I don't suppose we know how the hell Saren and the geth managed to find a way to disable our suits without an EMP?" The red haired phantom asked me.
I shook my head. "No. I'll make sure to go through the logs and send them over to CryTech for analysis. Hopefully they can find something in there."
"Good."
"How's your sister?"
"She'll manage. She's having to come to terms with the choice she was forced to make."
I nodded my head slowly "That's not a choice you ever want to have to make."
"No it's not." Malea's gaze caught something outside the medbay and when I turned to follow it I saw Vanyali exit her quarters, wearing her alliance uniform as she made her way up the stairs. "She's going to report to the council."
I nodded absently as I watched her walk from view.
"You should go wait for her, she'll need the companionship."
I turned to stare at the Phantom "I thought that that's what you were doing."
"I've done my part. Now it's your turn. Be there for her the way you were there for her after Akuze and Torfan. She's told me how much it meant to her to have you there in the darker times of her life. And if that isn't enough one of the lives that she did save was yours."
I gave her a long troubled look. "I suppose you're right." I said sighing. "Damn, when did everything get so fucked up?"
"My best guess? Mindoir."
I nodded my head faintly as bad memories threatened to claw their way up from the deepest reaches of my mind. "Yeah… probably."
"Go, wait for her and I suggest you shed the suit once you're there. She doesn't need the phantom, she needs you the human."
I nodded. "I have some clothes in my office, although I must admit I never expected to use them."
"That sounds good to me. Now, off you get." She said giving me a light push towards the door.
"Alright alright I'm going." I said as I made my retreat. Upon exiting the med bay I turned and strode past the sleeper pods, all of which were currently empty and entered my office. There I ruffled through my bag until I found the neatly folded suit that was stored at the bottom. While I had never expected to wear it I always kept a suit with me in case I needed to make a hurried appearance as the director. Leaving the jacket behind I grabbed the white shirt and black pants from the bag and left the office heading towards the captain's quarters. Waving my hand over the sensor I slipped inside as the door slid open. Looking around the sparse room I spotted Vanyali's armor lying strewn haphazardly on the floor in front of the armor cabinet. A photo of the crew stood on her desk next to a portrait of her and her sister standing in front of a large tree. Various datapads stood stacked on the bedtable along with a small lamp, but other than that the room was very sparse.
With a final glance around the room I raised my left hand, palm directed upward toward my face and when my visor recognized the gestures it brought up the various options inlaid over my fingers and arm. Starting to tap away at my fingers and various highlighted spots with my right hand I navigated my way through suit menus and commands as I slowly and safely deactivated the nanosuit. The first thing to go was the neural link which made me feel the full weight of the suit along with losing the sense of feeling that came with it as instead of feeling as if the suit was my skin I felt the suit on my skin. Movement became more difficult as it ceased to augment my movements with its own and I began having to use more of my strength just to move. Then the suit seals disengaged and it peeled open along the spine. I quickly pulled off the suit and undersuit and threw on my shirt and pants as I waited for the crash. As was expected it came quickly and hard as if I had been running on a massive rush of adrenalin or sugar. I felt the exhaustion crash over me accompanied by the many aches and pains that had been suppressed until now. I let out a groan letting myself fall into the chair at the desk as my legs gave out. I sat there limply for what felt like hours as my body refused to work properly until the door to the quarters slid open and I heard Vanyali's voice cut through my haze.
"Martin?"
"Hey" I said, my voice sounding raw as I raised a single hand in greeting.
"What- are you alright?" She asked concerned rushing over to me letting the door close behind her.
I tried to answer, let her know that I would be fine but all that left my mouth was "Nnnggh."
"Why aren't you in your suit? Should I get Chakwas?" She asked her face appearing in front of me green eyes expressing her worry.
The thought made me gather my strength and try to sit up. "No- ugh No I'll be fine, just some side effects of taking of my suit. It'll pass by fairly quickly."
"You sure?" She asked doubtfully.
I nodded as confidently as my aching body let me "Oh yeah. So how did the debrief with the council go?"
She narrowed her eyes at me but decided to drop the matter as she turned and sat down on her bed as she answered my question. "Alright I suppose. They weren't too happy that we detonated a nuke on a garden world, and I'm not sure they believed me about Sovereign, but they are apparently regarding Saren as a legitimate threat now. They're setting up a task force dedicated to dealing with him and the geth and have recalled the Normandy to the citadel."
"Well that's good news at least." I murmured carefully standing as the pounding in my head receded somewhat. I halfheartedly tried waving her away as she stood up and gently supported my weight. With a relieved sigh I sat down on the bed next to her.
Vanyali looked at me with concern "You really don't look too good. You can hardly stand."
"It'll pass soon enough. Just that when I take off the suit after having it on for a while, it takes its toll."
Her eyes narrowed shrewdly "Symbiosis?" she questioned.
I shook my head and waved my head dismissively. "Nah… well actually I suppose it would be, but it's merely the simplest form of such. Nothing can really be done to counteract it. Think of it like coming off of a massive sugar rush. All the energy that the suit feeds into you, the strength and power it grants you. Your body is constantly being helped along and when the source of that is cut. Well then you best brace yourself for the crash because it comes quickly. But within half an hour your body will have adapted and I'll be good to go for a couple hours before the second crash comes and I'll likely fall asleep where I'm standing. Then after sleeping for a while I'll wake up ravenous and ready to eat anything I can get my hands on, unless of course I put it back on. So really the effects are pretty minor. Unlike the other kinds of symbiosis the side effects of which could lay me flat on my ass for at the very least a day before regaining any semblance of normality this is pretty good all around in my opinion."
"Well then. I suppose since I only have a limited amount of time before you fall asleep on me there's no point in waiting any longer."
Before I could respond and question what she was waiting on I felt her lips cover mine as she kissed me. As she ended up pushing me over onto the bed and as our clothes eventually found their way scattered around the room I could find only one word to describe how I felt, a word that I could not honestly have described myself being for over a decade. Content.
As we lay there under the bed covers, just as I could feel myself slipping away into sleep, my fingers drawing invisible patterns into her skin, I stared into her eyes and murmured a single question even as my eyes slowly drooped closed against my will. "Would you like to go out to dinner with me?"
As I lost myself to the realm of sleep I could hear her response echoing with me as I navigated the dreams that populated that wondrous land. "Yes."

I regained consciousness wondering what had dragged me from my restful slumber wondering what had awoken me and refusing to open my eyes to the new day. My question was soon answered as the source of warmth that I was clutching moved and slowly started to pull away from me. Letting out an intelligible grumble I pulled it closer instead burrowing deeper into that wonderful warmth. I heard a sigh as it stopped trying to pull away and I heard Vanyali's gentle voice. "Martin, I need to get up. We're a couple hours out from the citadel and I'm going to have to report to the council."
I yawned opening my eyes to the sight of Vanyali watching me. Blinking owlishly I slowly sat up and stretched, releasing my hold on her. As she extricated herself from the bed she turned to me "You can keep sleeping for a little while longer you know. I just need to go check on everyone before we land."
I shook my head giving her a smile "Nah, I need to eat something…" I paused glancing down at my stomach as it rumbled loudly "Or maybe a lot of somethings."
She laughed leaning in to give me a quick kiss. "Well then, I need a shower, care to join me?"
I smiled "Well I suppose I am due for a shower."
An hour had passed by the time we both exited the captain's quarters, Shepard clothed in her officers uniform and me suited back up, grumbling about not being able to eat anything yet again. Vanyali turned to walk towards the stairs up to the CIC while I went the opposite direction towards my office where I spent the next hour with CARLA, calling various assets to the citadel in preparation for the offensive through the mu relay. Phantom teams would be conducting commando raids and reconnaissance runs alongside the Salarian STG, Turian Cabals and Human N7 teams, while Inquisitors would be acting as shock troopers on the front lines where needed. All five Phantom teams were currently on the way to the citadel with Eagle just over five hours out. Multiple Inquisitor teams had already arrived and were preparing to join the council expedition the moment they were given the green light.
"Operative Wraith, please report to the CIC. Operative Wraith to the CIC."
I glanced up at the intercom for a second before turning back to my terminal where the Holographic figure of CARLA was displayed. "Finish up securing logistical support for the teams. Also could you let Niel know to meet us in the council chambers? I'd like for him to be there."
"Of course Martin, I'll also make sure to get CABAL to set up a training regime in the meantime for our operatives to conduct while they are waiting."
I smiled and nodded "Thanks CARLA, if anything else needs to be done go do it."
"Of course."

"Ilos is only accessible via the Mu relay commander and as you know it is located deep within the terminus systems. If we were to send a fleet there, the only possible outcome is full scale war." While the only reaction that I revealed was a slight narrowing of my eyes, my internal feelings were far from subdued and a quick glance at where Anderson was telling Vanyali something told me that she was feeling similarly to me.
"One ship going into the terminus won't start a war. I can be discreet!" My narrowed eyes had turned into an angry glare as I continued watching the proceedings. I knew that Shepard's words would likely not change anything, the politicians were at work here and I could only hope that Niel could manage to speak their language.
"You detonated a nuclear device on Virmire. I wouldn't call that discrete." Sparatus shot back.
"Please Councillor" Niel interrupted quickly "I do assume that you've read the STG report that clearly states that it was Captain Kirrahe who came up with the idea and who instructed the Spectre's team in its detonation. We can not shift blame or responsibility to where it is not required, not to mention that Saren's base had to be destroyed and their options were running out. The fact of the matter is that the Normandy, or any other ship with stealth technology could quite easily reach Ilos undetected. Was it not planned to send the Normandy to Ilos accompanied by multiple Phantom teams to stop Saren from completing whatever it is he wishes to complete?"
"That was originally the plan yes." Councillor Tevos responded "Yet upon further review we believe that both the Commander's and the Phantom's style is extremely well suited in the traverse. The council knows this and so we merely wish to make sure that all of our assets are deployed in the most ideal method possible. Ilos requires a very deft touch, one that we have well in hand."
I ground my teeth in frustration and anger. The Phantoms were best suited for situations just like this, covert infiltration and extraction, the council knew this which made Tevos' words that much more worrisome. Evidently Niel had also recognized this "Councillor, far be it for me to question the will of the Council, but is this not precisely the area of expertise of both the Phantoms and the Commander?"
"Of that we are no longer certain. After the events on Noveria we believe that we will have to take a closer look at the Phantom project in general. As for the Commander she would be much better suited responding to any attacks that Saren could send. Secrecy was his greatest weapon. And it is precisely this that you have taken from him."
"Secrecy isn't his greatest weapon! The conduit is!" Vanyali exclaimed heatedly.
"Saren is a master manipulator commander. The conduit is merely a distraction from Saren's true goals." Valern explained, his voice as condescending as if he were explaining something to a child.
"This is just politics commander." Udina spoke "You've done your job now let me do mine." A smile grew on the ambassador's face "We've locked out all of the Normandy's primary systems. Until further notice, you're grounded."
"You double crossing son of a bitch." She hissed fury apparent in her tone "Fine. You want to all die when Saren comes knocking? Fine! Just come find me when you're ready to actually save the galaxy. I'll be waiting." Turning sharply on her heel she marched out of the council chambers at a perfect military march, with the rest of the squad arrayed out behind her.
"Well I wouldn't want to interrupt the council to plan your maneuvers against Saren." Niel spoke into the silence "And as apparently we need to re envision our operations we're going to have to go and do a short protocol run through of all CryNet assets. Make sure they are all up to snuff when you require them. I'm sure that you won't be too bothered while we do so. Information access can be a little… difficult during maintenance."
And so as me and Niel followed behind Shepard I saw Tevos glance worriedly at Valern and Sparatus before they vanished from my view.
"Send the order for all phantoms and inquisitors on the citadel to return to the base immediately. Additionally have all incoming phantom teams make sure to engage cloaking when they come in and deploy covertly at the base." I muttered to Niel as we exited the council towers a little ways behind Shepard.
He glanced at me with a worried look on his face "What are you going to do?" He asked resigned.
I raised my head slightly as I sped up "Make sure that the Commander can save the galaxy."
"Commander." I called as I approached the group from behind. Garrus and Wrex glanced back at me before parting and allowing me to come up to the side of the Spectre. "I suggest that you return to the Normandy and prepare for a quick getaway."
She stopped and turned to look at me with a surprised expression on her face. "What? Why?"
"Because I'm going to make sure that you can get to Ilos immediately. Now listen. The lockdown will likely have been done by the Normandy itself and the Citadel docking clamps. The clamp lockdown can be overridden by Udina's computer or the C-Sec systems. The Normandy's lockdown on the other hand is easily overridden. When the docking clamps are unlocked I'll need you to enter this command into the Normandy's computers. 'Initiate CryNet Command Lockdown override. Command code: N938-C413-E726-P873-H093.' That will give you control of the Normandy."
"What? How-"
"Sorry There's no time to explain. You need to get to the Normandy and prepare to leave ASAP. I'll make sure that the clamps are unlocked and that C-Sec won't register your departure until it's too late."
"Wait you're not coming?"
I shook my head slowly "I'm the only one who has both the suit and up to date knowledge on the C-Sec lockdown systems, which means I'm going to be infiltrating C-Sec and making sure that you can get to Ilos."
Vanyali swallowed heavily "I understand. Just- Just be careful. When C-Sec learn's what you've done they'll come down on you."
"Don't worry about me. I'll be in the CryNet base and while the Council and C-Sec will get real pissy, we can deal with that another time. But If Saren manages to bring back the Reapers? Then no one will give a damn what I did."
"Right. I'll be ready."
"Good. And Vanyali? Be very careful. There's no telling what's waiting for you on Ilos."
Sneaking into C-Sec was painfully easy with a Nanosuit, but even for those without a suit I could see multiple weaknesses in their defenses that I'd be sure to pass on once all this was done. A couple of times I had to flatten myself into a wall before an officer that I hadn't spotted coming would have walked into me but in the end getting in undetected was rather easy. Had they been expecting me it would likely have been a different matter entirely. But as it was C-Sec currently had no reason to expect an invisible person to try to infiltrate their headquarters. The difficult part was getting access to either a terminal or to connect my suit via a wired jack as the system that I wanted to access was not available over the wireless network, which while good for security did mean that it was that much more difficult for me right now.
After a few minutes of walking through the terminals and servers I finally managed plug myself into a data terminal and set my suit's TRAITOR algorithms to work. The sophisticated hacking program run by my suit AI quickly bypassed the C-Sec firewalls and navigated its way through the virtual mazes avoiding the VI defense programs until it reached its destination.
"Normandy this is Wraith." I called quietly over my suit comms, voice being nullified by my suit until it was little more than the whisper of a gust of air.
"We read you Wraith. Are you ready to bust us out?"
"Yeah, you all set on your end?" I asked glancing at a turian who had just entered the room where I was currently crouched in.
"We're set and ready for your mark."
"Copy that. Disengaging docking clamps now. Safe flight Normandy and get that bastard Saren for me will you." I said as SECOND disengaged the docking clamps of the Normandy.
"We will. Stay safe." Vanyali's voice said before the comm clicked off.
Immediately SECOND isolated the alert that was already sending out a message to C-Sec that the Normandy was leaving without clearance and with the smallest amount of delay the AI started mimicking the all clear signal from that alarm. This was why I had to stay here. The C-Sec security VI would detect any sort of abnormality caused by a regular virus and send an alarm. Only an AI could mimic the signals to such accuracy that the VI wouldn't notice a difference and only my AI had access to the up-to-date codes, courtesy of CryNet's data link to C-Sec, via my suit's QEC.
And so I kneeled there invisible, suit plugged into a data jack and keeping a close eye on the turian that had seated himself in front of a computer terminal facing me. I just had to hope that he wouldn't notice the wire that was running off into thin air.
Unfortunately luck wasn't on my side as a few minutes in, but still an estimated four and a half minutes until the Normandy was safely away the turian spotted the cable. The first warning I had of his perception was a sudden straightening of the turian as his eyes focused on where I was. Then came a confused exclamation from him as he stood up and began walking toward me his head cocked to the side as he took in the cable that just vanished into nothing in front of him. Luckily for me he was not that familiar with cloaking technology as it didn't occur to him until it was just too late what he was looking at. Unfortunately for him he couldn't do anything other than process what he was seeing before my hand closed around his throat and tightened my fingers slipping in between the protective ridges on his throat to cut off the blood supply to his brain. With the blood circulation cut off I merely had to weather his surprised but feeble attempts to free himself accompanied by panicked gasping for a few seconds before he became limp in my hands. Making sure that he was knocked out by checking his vitals through my HUD I released him before he could suffer any permanent brain damage. I wasn't here to hurt anyone after all. He merely would have to remain unconscious for a few more minutes until I could leave.
If I was lucky he wouldn't remember what happened to him, however it was far more likely that he would remember something if not everything. And so it was almost certain that C-Sec would realize that a Phantom had been here. Not that they wouldn't have found that out anyway. I thought to myself as the timer until the Normandy's Mass Relay jump ticked down to zero.
When it finally did reach zero and the unconscious turian officer hadn't regained consciousness and no other C-Sec officer had entered the room I breathed a short sigh of relief double checked the actual data and on confirming that the Normandy was gone unplugged my suit from the data jack and quickly began making my way out. Almost immediately I heard the alert go out that a ship had left dock without authorization which very quickly changed into a generally security alert when they realized that not only had the Normandy left without authorization but they were just now getting the message after the ship had already left the system. However before they could lock down the base I was already outside and quickly making my way to a nearby hover car that was waiting for me. As it took off toward the CryOps base, I knew that I'd be in for a long night.
A/N: I'M BACK EVERYONE! So I'm very sorry for the eight months between updates. Ouch that's a long time. My only excuse? I couldn't gather the will to do any more writing, I'd sit down try to write some, manage to write maybe a sentence before being distracted and I just couldn't write more than a few words. It was a bit easier for my other story Mass Effect: Deception but even that suffered. That all changed just over a week ago when I got a new laptop. Being able to write wherever I was and not at my desk, also not using a gaming keyboard the keys of which require a little bit of force but the laptop is a lot better for making my hands much more comfortable while writing and in general the creativity is coming right back!
I promise all of you right now that I WILL finish this, there are so many writers who abandon their fics and while it certainly seemed like I abandoned this since it's been so long since updating I can tell you now that I will do my best to finish this fic soon. After all we are reaching the endgame.
So this chapter we dealt with what happened last chapter (Obviously) but we also had a major moment in the romance. Now as a guy who's not in a relationship I'm not very knowledgeable in that entire field and I think that were I to change anything major about this fic I'd probably not have done any romance at all as really that isn't something that I'm too good at. But hey my younger self decided that a romance would be a great idea and so I'm now kinda stuck with it as I REALLY don't want to rewrite this fic again. Other than that we also have Wraith not going to Ilos with Shepard. Now the main reason for me not wanting him to go to Ilos is because I don't want to just rehash things the game has done. I've done that soo much already in this fic and my writing style has really improved (in my mind at least) and I'd rather write about new things.
Next chapter we will deal with the consequences of Wraith's actions. My guess is that this Fic has a little more than ten more chapters to go? I definitely think that by chap 40 the game events will be done and then I'll put up a couple more chapters about the aftermath and probably a teaser for the sequel, Nano Effect: The Collector Crysis.
Now I'm going to do my absolute best to get the next chapter of this written and released ASAP. ME:Deception's next chapter is already ready to be uploaded so all I have to work on right now is this in order to get it out to you all. My goal is to alternate chapters between those two fics for now until this is done. Then I'll probably focus on that until it's finished and get a good backlog of NE:TCC before thinking about releasing that.
Anyway this has been a long enough Author's note as it is so I'm going to leave it here. Until next time guys.
