"Sawamura, there's a Hufflepuff outside asking for you." an underclassman tells him.
"Oh, that's probably Raichi." Sawamura says. Usually Todoroki would text him before coming over, so he wonders if something is up.
He doesn't wait too long to get the answer to that, because as soon as he meets Todoroki at the common room entrance, Todoroki launches himself into Sawamura's arms.
"Eijun, I need your help!" he cries.
"Raichi? What's wrong?"
Todoroki shakes his head. "Not here. Can we go somewhere private?"
Sawamura takes him upstairs to his room. Whatever it is, he's happy that Todoroki trusted him enough to come to him over his regular friends. They've been friends since their first practice match together. At first, Sawamura hated the fellow fifth-year Beater for the way he played Quidditch. Todoroki's wild style of flying and scary strength when it came to hitting Bludgers threw Gryffindor off their game. Hufflepuff ended up winning that match. Both teams lined up once it was over to bow and congratulate one another, and they ended up standing across from each other. Sawamura had every intention of continuing to hate him, until Todoroki said quietly:
"That was a cool move you did, tricking Sanada-senpai."
"Thanks. It was cool how you hit the Bludger out of the stadium too."
It was friendship at first sight.
"Okay, now can we can talk. What's up?" Sawamura says once they're sitting down on his bed.
"You have a boyfriend, right?" Raichi asks, cautiously.
"Yeah, why?"
Todoroki brightens. "I need your advice, Eijun. None of my friends know anything about relationships."
It feels good, to have more experience in something than other people for once. "Yep, I know everything about relationships! Ask me anything."
"I have this, um, friend who just realized he has a crush on his teammate." Raichi scratches his head. "Maybe he always had a crush on him and didn't notice it until now. Is that weird?"
Sawamura thinks about him and Miyuki and shakes his head. "No, that makes sense."
"He keeps thinking about how much fun he has when it's just the two of them. His teammate is really cool, and he always listens to him even if he's saying something stupid. And he can hit Bludgers almost as hard as my friend can!"
As Todoroki lists all the things his "friend" likes about his crush, Sawamura feels kinda jealous. He never got to talk about everything he loved about Miyuki. It all happened so fast, realizing his feelings and actually dating Miyuki, before he actually got to sit back and think about why he couldn't get him out of his head. Not like it mattered, Kuramochi would snap his arm off for getting too mushy.
Sawamura interrupts him. "Why doesn't your friend just tell him how he feels?"
"I—he can't do that!" Todoroki shakes his head furiously. "They've been friends since they were kids. He sees him as a little brother."
"Then he has to get him to see him as something more!" Sawamura snaps his fingers. "Like with a singing Valentine."
Todoroki nods enthusically. "See, you're better at this stuff than I am. You have to help me."
"I don't know." No one has ever come to him for romantic advice before.
He grips Sawamura's hands. "Please! You're the only one I can trust with this."
The earnest look in his friend's eyes convinced him. "Okay, Raichi. Starting from today, I'll be your love coach! By the time we're done there's no way Sanada-senpai won't notice you."
Todoroki's face explodes with color. "W—What?! Who said anything about Sanada-senpai?"
"No."
"What—I haven't said anything yet!"
"In case you were going to ask me something, the answer is no."
Sawamura slumps down in the seat across from Miyuki. "Maybe I wanted to ask you to take the next step with me, in our relationship."
Miyuki flips to the next page in the book he's reading. "With you, the 'next step' probably means buying a Quidditch broom together."
Sawamura crosses his arms. "Fine, I won't ask."
He glares at Miyuki and waits. Then waits some more.
"Fine. If you're that desperate, I'll take the 'next step' with you." Miyuki says with a grin.
"That's not what I wanted to ask you!" Sawamura says, which got him a sharp warning from the librarian to keep his voice down.
"Go ahead. Ask what you wanted to ask me."
Sawamura smiles. "Thank you. Okay, I want you to become friends with Sanada-senpai."
Miyuki stares at him blankly.
"You remember, the ace Seeker from Hufflepuff? He's a sixth-year just like you." Sawamura continues.
"I know who he is. I'm trying to figure out why you'd want me to be his friend." Miyuki leans back in his chair. "If it were anyone but you, I'd think you wanted me to steal the Hufflebook playbook."
"I'd never ask you to do something like that!" Sawamura responds immediately. "Cheating takes all the fun out of Quidditch."
"Yeah, you're too naive to think of something like that." He keeps going before Sawamura can figure out whether that's an insult or not. "So what do you want from Sanada Shunpei?"
He avoids Miyuki's eyes. "I think you two would make great friends. You both like Quidditch and…" He racks his brain for something else they had in common. "And lots of other things too."
"Wow, this must be a big favor then. You only lie like that when it's something bad." Miyuki taps his fingers against the table. "Spit it out, the librarian is giving us the evil eye."
"I need you to become friends with so I can find out what type of guy Sanada-senpai likes!" Sawamura says all in one breath.
Miyuki raises his eyebrows. "Please don't tell me you have a crush on Sanada."
Sawamura turns red with embarrassment. "Not for me! For my friend Raichi. He asked me to be his love coach." he says, proudly.
Miyuki looks like he's trying very, very hard to hold something in. He's about to ask what's up when Miyuki gives up and lets out the loudest laugh he's ever heard. The librarian wastes no time kicking the both of them out of the library.
Miyuki is still laughing as they walk away. "Love coach," he wheezes.
"It's not that funny!" Sawamura snaps.
Miyuki calms down a little. "Why would anyone come to you, the most oblivious person in the world, for romantic advice?"
"Hey, I'm the perfect person to come to for romantic advice. I'm in a successful relationship right now!"
"Oh, really? With who?"
Sawamura kicks his shin.
"Ow!" Miyuki rubs the spot where Sawamura had kicked him. "I'm just saying, you're slow when it comes to romance. We're only here now because of an accident."
"That's not true." But when he goes all the way back to that first confession, he sees what Miyuki means.
"If not for that love potion, we wouldn't be together right now."
Sawamura changes the subject. He doesn't want to imagine some alternative universe where he and Miyuki aren't together. "You have to help me, Miyuki. You're better at researching people than am I. And you could use more friends! You don't have any outside of Gryffindor."
"Yes, I do."
"Friends that don't try to break up your relationships."
"...Fair."
Sawamura slipped his fingers in between Miyuki's. "Please. I promised Raichi."
Miyuki sighs. "Alright, I'll do it. On one condition."
Sawamura hugs him. "Thanks, Miyuki! You'll like Sanada-senpai, he's really friendly." He pulls back. "Wait, what condition?"
Miyuki looks him up and down. "I'll think about it."
Sawamura's face burns with the thought of what he might want. "Pervert." he mumbles under his breath.
"Hey, you're the one that brought it up first."
I shouldn't have said yes, is the first thing Miyuki thinks as he stands outside the entrance to the Hufflepuff common room.
There are many reasons Sawamura is the worst person to come to for any advice, one of them being that he's not very good at coming up with plans. Honestly, he's proud of Sawamura for getting this far. The problem is, he's got no clue how to make friends with Sanada.
It hurts to admit it, but Sawamura is right. All of his friends are pretty much in his House, except for Narumiya. But that doesn't count, since they knew each other as children. Narumiya himself told him once that that was the only reason he stayed friends with Miyuki after they got sorted into different Houses (it took them both by surprise, his being sorted into Gryffindor). The way he sees it, the other Houses are his rivals in Quidditch, so they're his rivals in everything. He doesn't mind being friendly, but he doesn't see the point in getting close with people he has to compete against.
Which makes him the worst person to try and befriend anyone in general. He wasn't even sure what he should say. "My name is Miyuki Kazuya and I'd like to be your friend"? Right. They'd throw him out without hesitating. He meant to tell Sawamura all of this, but he made it as hard as possible for Miyuki to say no. One look, and Miyuki heard himself agreeing to do something he knew he wouldn't want to do.
"Are you lost, senpai?" a tiny Hufflepuff girl says, making Miyuki jump.
"What? No, I'm not lost. I'm looking for Sanada Shunpei, can you tell me if he's in there?"
The girl keeps her eyes on the ground. She must be a first year, Miyuki thinks to himself. "Um, I'm not sure. You can go in and look for himself, the password is on the wall." She points to the wall next to the common room entrance and there is, in fact, a sticky note with the password on it.
That's hard for Miyuki to believe. "You put out your password for anyone to see?"
She shrugged. "It's fun when other Houses visit us." She said Treacle Tart and held the door open for him.
It's like there's a party going on, with the amount of people in the room. Classes have just ended, so everyone is still in their uniforms. He sees Gryffindors, Ravenclaws, even Slytherins. In the center is Sanada, surrounded by a large group of people.
Miyuki walks up to him and clears his throat. "Sanada."
The eyes of everyone around Sanada swivel over to stare at him. Sanada, however, takes it all in stride with a smile. "That's me. What do you need?"
Miyuki has nothing to lose, so he says, "My name is Miyuki Kazuya. Let's be friends."
Sanada blinks. Miyuki's stomach sinks.
Then he gives Miyuki a wide smile and a hard pat on the shoulder. "We're going to the courtyards to practice our Defense Against the Dark spells. Come with us."
He's taken aback. It can't be that easy, right? "Um, sure."
Sanada pats him on the shoulder again. "Good. None of these guys are good at casting counter-spells."
"Oi, that's not fair!" Mishima says.
"I can cast a good counter-spell! Just watch me, Senpai!" Todoroki jumps in, way too eager.
Todoroki Raichi. That's the one who's into Sanada. Though, he could've figured that out without Sawamura telling him. This guy looks at Sanada like he's God's gift to the world. But to be fair, so do most of the people in the room. He gets the impression that Sanada is a popular guy around here.
Sanada is popular. Now I've got something to tell Sawamura. Miyuki smiles to himself. He may as well put his full effort into this.
"See, the Muggles have the right idea. When they have a need, they create something to fulfill that need. Inventions that we would've never thought of, because we depend on magic too much." Sanada stretches out on the ground, arms behind his back.
"Why wouldn't we? Magic is meant to be depended on. Believe me, Muggles would jump on the chance to have magic, that's why we have to keep it a secret from them." Miyuki responds, laying back on the grass.
Sanada shook his head. "Think all the stuff we're missing out on. It's quick and easy to Apparate, but the Muggles have bicycles and cars. You get to where you're going the same way, except you get to see the scenery pass you by."
Miyuki chuckles. "You're delusional. No one rides bicycles anymore."
Sanada laughs too. "You should take Muggle Studies next year. You'll see where I'm coming from."
This is a weird experience for Miyuki. He hasn't made a new friend since fourth year, when he'd joined the Quidditch team. He's forgotten what it's like to talk to another person about everything, learning things about them along the way. Sanada's favorite subject is Care for Magical Creatures. His Divination classes have told him that he's either going to become extremely rich and famous or die a very painful death. He's self-conscious about his face, because he used to have acne as a kid.
He tells all this information to Sawamura because he hasn't forgotten he has a job, even though looks forward to going to the Hufflepuff dorms after class each day. He never knows exactly what Sawamura does with the information, he only sees the after effects. Todoroki throws a tiny stuffed animal version of a Thestral at Sanada without saying anything. He hands Sanada positive horoscopes he's ripped out of magazines (magazines Miyuki knows for certain came from Sawamura, the most superstitious human being alive). And speaking of, he notices Todoroki walking up to them right now.
"Sanada-senpai." Todoroki states. It's an improvement from every other time, where he either tosses something at Sanada or stands around until Sanada notices him.
Sanada sits up and gives him his full attention. "Yeah?"
Todoroki opens and closes his mouth, nearly losing his nerve. Thankfully he manages to get out, "In Potions, for you, I—I made—here." He thrusts a bottle with a mysterious substance into Sanada's hands. "It's lotion."
Sanada accepts the gift with a sunny smile. "Thanks, Raichi."
Raichi nods stiffly and walks away. Sanada watches him go, still smiling.
"I wouldn't use that if I were you," Miyuki advises.
Sanada swirls the lotion around in the bottle. "Raichi made this for me. I have to use it at least once."
Miyuki feels sorry for Todoroki, he truly does. Because he's been watching all of their interactions, and they all go about the same way. Sanada's face brightens when Todoroki comes up, sometimes casually cutting off a conversation to talk to him. He accepts each of Todoroki's gifts with a smile, and he seriously listens to the things that Todoroki says. The problem is, that's the type of guy Sanada is. He smiles at everyone, he listens to everyone, he treats everyone the exact same way. He's the exact kind of people-person that Miyuki normally hates, and type of person he would never have a crush on, because it's hard to tell who a person like that finds special.
He tried to subtly ask Sanada about his feelings once after another one of Todoroki's failed attempts at conversation.
"Secret admirer?" Miyuki asked.
"What? No, no! We're friends." Sanada was flustered, a good sign.
"Oh, I couldn't tell."
"We go way back, me and Raichi." Maybe his eyes softened when he said that, Miyuki wasn't sure. "He's just been acting weird lately. I'm sure it's nothing."
Miyuki didn't push it then, they weren't close enough yet. Now, he's not sure what to say.
He wonders whether Sanada has ever had a crush on someone, or if he divides his heart equally among all the people he surrounds himself with.
The next day proves Miyuki right. Whatever was in that experiment Todoroki called lotion, it reacted in all the wrong ways to Sanada's skin. His face is covered pimples, small pimples and angry, red, large pimples.
"You owe me a Galleon," Miyuki says once they get out of Herbology.
"It might not be the lotion that did this." Miyuki gives him a look. "Okay, maybe not. Maybe I applied it on wrong."
"Maybe it's a bad idea to put mystery lotion all over your face."
"Like I said, it probably wasn't meant to put on my face." Sanada shrugs. "Whatever. Raichi tried his best, that's all that matters."
Miyuki scoffs. "Okay, either you're the nicest guy in the world or…"
"Or what?"
Or, like a normal person, you like Todoroki. "Nothing. Give the lotion to me, I might be able to create an antidote if I can figure out what ingredients he put in it."
Sanada takes the bottle out of his pocket. "Thanks, man. You're a lifesaver."
"I'll catch up with you later." He already has a good idea where to find more information about the mystery potion.
So he goes straight over to the common room and set the bottle down right in front of where Sawamura is sitting.
"Why do you have Raichi's special lotion?" Sawamura says.
"I knew you had something to do with this." Miyuki slides into the seat next to him. "Tell me what you put in this."
He shrugged. "I got it from a magazine. It's supposed to make your skin smooth."
"Sanada's skin disagrees with that."
Sawamura pales. "Oh no, did it not work?"
"That's an understatement." Miyuki hands Sawamura a piece of paper and a pencil. "Write down what you can remember."
While Sawamura is writing the ingredients down, Miyuki says, "Maybe lotion wasn't the best idea. Potions isn't your strongest subject."
"Raichi's trying his best, unlike you." Sawamura snaps. "It's been weeks and you're no closer to finding out how Sanada feels!"
"I can't just walk up to him and ask how he feels about Todoroki!" Miyuki sighs. "I'll ask soon, okay?"
"Wait!" Sawamura says as Miyuki turns away. "You don't have to make the antidote right now."
Miyuki scrunches his eyebrows. "Why not? I've got the time now."
Sawamura looks away. "You spend all your time in Hufflepuff every day. We could, I don't know, take a walk or something."
Miyuki smirks and steps closer to him. "I didn't think you'd miss me so much."
"Go to hell! It's your fault for never being around!"
He gives Sawamura a quick kiss on the lips. "It's better if I do this as soon as possible. I promise won't take too long."
He's out the door before Sawamura can call his name again.
Sawamura snaps the pencil he's holding in his hand, clenching it too tight while he did his homework. That was his third pencil today.
The stress and frustration from everything in his life is starting to weigh down on him heavily. He's not gaining anymore speed on his broom, and where is he now isn't good enough to rival Narumiya or Sanada. He's still struggling in most of his classes, even though he's doing just well enough to stay off of academic probation. And there's Miyuki.
He snaps another pencil. Number four.
He hasn't seen Miyuki, that lying bastard Miyuki, in a week, despite being constantly told that "they'll hang out later" or "he'll be free in a minute". He's happy that Miyuki is taking this so seriously, or he was at first. Now he's tired of fighting for Miyuki's attention and ready for all of this to be over.
Of course, Sawamura hasn't told him any of that. Every time he tries to, Miyuki makes fun of him. Sawamura's too embarrassed to get Miyuki to take him seriously. You're allowed to miss someone you're dating, right? Shouldn't Miyuki care whether they see each other or not?
Just when he thinks he can't feel any worse, Todoroki walks in with a literal gray cloud over his head.
"Raichi, you've got something over your head." he says.
"I know. My friends cast it on me as a joke." He's never heard Todoroki sound so gloomy before.
Sawamura uses his wand to blow the cloud away. "What's up?"
"Eijun, I don't know how to tell you this." Tears appeared at the corner of his eyes. "I know who Sanada-senpai likes."
Sawamura jumps up. "What? Tell me!"
A shadow falls over Todoroki's face. "It's Miyuki-senpai." he mumbles, soft enough that Sawamura barely catches it.
"Sorry, I think I heard you wrong. It sounded like you said Miyuki."
Todoroki shakes his head. "I'm sorry, Eijun."
Sawamura feels like his entire stomach has dropped from underneath him. "You're wrong. They're just friends. Miyuki's helping us, remember?"
Todoroki shakes his head again."I saw them on the grass. They were holding hands."
He leans on the table to stop himself from collapsing to the ground. "No. No."
Todoroki puts a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay. We'll get through this together. Miyuki-senpai doesn't…"
His own thoughts drown out Todoroki's voice. This is a mistake. This has to be a mistake. There's no way Miyuki has feelings for Sanada. Even though he talks about him all the time. And he spends all his time in Hufflepuff these days, even eating lunch with them sometimes. And Sanada is better than Sawamura in so many ways.
"Sorry, Raichi." he interrupts. "I think I want to be alone right now."
Miyuki yawns and opens his eyes, blinking a few times. Shit, we fell asleep again. Miyuki thinks. His hand is brushing up against something warm, which turns out to be Sanada's hand as he turns around to look.
He nudges Sanada awakes. "Move over, you're drooling on my shoulder."
Sanada stretches his arms above his head. "Man, you woke me up right at the best part."
The sun is shining on Sanada's face, and the mood between them is completely relaxed. There's never going to be a better time than this, so he goes for it.
"Hey, Sanada." He pauses, not sure about the right to phrase this.
"Yeah? What's up?" Sanada sits up, more awake now.
Miyuki clears his throat. "Is there anyone you like right now?"
Sanada scrunches his eyebrows. "Like as in, like like?"
He rolls his eyes. "Yes, like like."
Sanada blinks a couple of times, then scratches the back of his head. "Miyuki, I had no idea you...Um, I really appreciate our friendship. I don't want to do anything that would ruin it."
His response confuses Miyuki, until he realizes what Sanada is trying to say. "Wait, are you rejecting me? That wasn't a confession!"
Sanada lets out a huge sigh of relief. "Thank god."
"I'm already dating someone, you know that!"
"I don't know, maybe your feelings are that strong!"
"They're not." Miyuki lies back on the ground. "You must have a serious crush on someone to reject me."
"Don't flatter yourself." he says, but his cheeks are pink. So he does have a crush on someone.
"So? Who is it?" he asks casually.
"Why do you care?" Sanada avoids the question again.
Miyuki thinks quickly about how to answer. Obviously, he can't tell Sanada the truth, because the truth is crazy. Especially if Sanada doesn't feel the same way about Todoroki. But he doesn't want to lie, because he and Sanada actually are friends now. He wants Sanada to be happy.
"You seem like you're in another place most of time. I thought it might because of someone. " That's a lie, Miyuki hasn't noticed anything truly off about him. "I thought you might need someone to talk to. Sometimes it's better to talk it out.
He knows from experience. He'd never, ever, ever say it out loud, but he doesn't know what he'd do if Kuramochi didn't put up with him.
Sanada is silent for a long time. Then, he begins to talk.
Miyuki quickens his pace down the hall, stopping short of running down the hallway. He doesn't mean to be dramatic, but he needs to find Sawamura as fast as possible. He's scanning the faces of everyone he passes until he actually sees Sawamura, walking with his head down.
"Sawamura!"
Sawamura's head snaps up. To Miyuki's surprise, there are tears in his eyes. The minute their eyes meet, Sawamura turns around and runs.
Without hesitating, Miyuki takes off after him. So now, his day has devolved into a high speed chase with his crying boyfriend. At least dating Sawamura is never boring.
He grabs Sawamura's arm and drags off to a place they can talk in private. "Let go of me!" Sawamura protests, struggling against his grip.
Miyuki pushes him against the wall. There are still tears running down Sawamura's face, and Miyuki feels an intense rage rise up in him. He'd kill anyone that hurt Sawamura.
"What happened?" Miyuki says softly. "Did someone hurt you?"
Sawamura keeps his head down and shakes his head. "Don't tease me, Miyuki. Just break up with me and get it over with."
"What?!" He's almost certain he misheard Sawamura.
"I know that Sanada is cooler than me, and more popular, and a better Seeker, but I didn't expect you to fall in love with him!" Sawamura wipes his eyes with his sleeves. "You could've told me you were feeling unhappy. I would've understood."
Miyuki pinches the bridge of his nose. "Back up. I'm in love with Sanada?"
"Stop joking around!" Sawamura raises his voice. "Raichi saw you holding hands with him on the lawn."
"On the lawn?" Miyuki racks his brain to figure out what he's talking.
Then it clicks. "We weren't holding hands! We fell asleep, and I guess our hands ended up next to each other."
"You guess." Sawamura says flatly.
"Yes! I'm not breaking up with you for Sanada! Do you trust me that little?"
At that, Sawamura's head snaps up. "Of course I trust you! But I know you have a thing for Seekers—"
"I do not have a thing for Seekers!"
"—and you and Sanada-senpai get along so well! I couldn't help but think that...maybe you two would be better together."
"How I feel about Sanada is nothing compared to how I feel about you!"
Miyuki's admission shocks them both into silence. Now, they couldn't look away from each other even if they wanted to.
Miyuki clears his throat, a little red. "I'm starting to realize that we don't talk as much as we should. So I'm telling now, you never have to worry about me and someone else. You're the only I like." He reaches over to gently grasp Sawamura's hand.
Sawamura smiles, and Miyuki feels like he can breathe again. "Okay, I believe you."
He pulls Sawamura into a hug. He notices that Sawamura is gripping the back of his sweater tightly, so he hugs him even closer. Really, you're the only one for me. He's not brave enough to say it out loud, because it's too close to what he actually wants to say, the three words he hasn't allowed himself to think.
"So, what were you going to tell me then?" Sawamura asks, voice slightly muffled from having his head burrowed into Miyuki's chest.
Miyuki pushes him back. "That's right! Sawamura, I found out who Sanada has a crush on."
Sawamura's eyes widen. "What?" Why didn't you tell me before?!"
Miyuki gives him a look. "I got slowed down by an idiot's fantasies. Anyway, the person Sanada likes is—
—Raichi." Sanada told him, face redder than Miyuki had ever seen it.
It took everything in Miyuki to school his face into a mask of blankness. "Your Beater? Huh, I never would've guessed that."
Sanada's face softened. "Raichi's amazing. He sees every obstacle in his path as a new challenge and greets it with a smile. Even when we've all given up, he keeps smiling. He makes me want to get better, so I can impress him."
"Wow, you really like him." Miyuki knew, because he understands exactly what Sanada is feeling.
He nodded. "I do."
"Then why don't you tell him? He might be into you too. Honestly, it seems like most of Hufflepuff is."
Sanada shook his head. "Raichi's different. We've been friends since we were kids. Coach is like a second father to me. That's why I'm sure he only thinks of me as like a big brother or something."
Miyuki had to hold himself back from explaining exactly what Todoroki thinks of him. "You have no way of knowing that unless you confess."
Sanada smiled sadly to himself. "I don't want to make things weird between us. I'm fine with just being friends."
Miyuki groaned inwardly, because somewhere along the way this stopped being about doing Sawamura a favor. Against his will, he began to think of Sanada as a friend. So now he had to help him out, because now he cares about Sanada's happiness or whatever.
He patted Sanada on the shoulder. "Don't worry. I have a feeling it'll all work out."
"This is great! I have to go tell Raichi!" Sawamura turns to run away, only to be held by Miyuki's grip on the back of his shirt.
"Wait a second. You can't just tell Todoroki how Sanada feels."
"Why not?" It seems pretty simple to Sawamura. Now they know for sure that Sanada feels the same way, there's nothing stopping Todoroki from confessing.
"It's not that simple. First, knowing that your feelings reciprocated doesn't make it any easier to confess. Second, it's not our place to confess for them. That's why I didn't tell Sanada how Raichi really felt."
Sawamura thinks about this. If someone told him that Miyuki liked him, what would he have done?
"I guess I understand." he finally says. "I'd be scared to tell you my feelings even I knew how you felt, because I'd be afraid that you'd still reject me." Miyuki's the type of person who puts his feelings second. It's one of the things that Sawamura likes about him.
He also thinks that day, when they first revealed their feelings for each other. It was embarrassing and awkward and sweet and he would never want that experience taken away from him. He definitely doesn't want to take that from Todoroki.
"What should we do then?" Sawamura says.
Miyuki has a look of deep concentration on his face. "We have to make them confess their feelings for each other. But I don't have any idea how to make them do that, short of throwing them in a closet together.
That makes a lightbulb goes off in Sawamura's head. "I've got an idea!"
He tells Miyuki, who shakes his head immediately. "No. Anything but that."
Sawamura crosses his arms. "It's the only way."
Miyuki sighs. "Fine. Let's do it."
Sawamura ambushes Todoroki in the library. "Yo, Raichi! What's up?"
Raichi doesn't look up from his book. "Nothing much."
"What's with the sour look? I told you, it's not like that between Miyuki and Sanda. It was all a misunderstanding."
"That doesn't mean that there's any chance of him liking me." Todoroki shakes his head. "I've decided to give on Senpai. I'm okay with being just friends him."
Sawamura puts a hand on his shoulder. "Don't give up yet! You never know when Sanada-senpai might start paying attention to you."
Todoroki smiled sadly. "I don't wanna get my hopes up again. I'm sorry for getting you involved, Eijun. You don't have worry about it anymore."
"Raichi…" It takes everything in Sawamura not to tell him everything. But, he remembers Miyuki's words. "...come with me to Hogsmeade tomorrow. I'll buy you a Butterbeer and we can talk about something other than love!"
Todoroki nods, looking a little brighter. "Yeah, sounds good!"
As Sawamura walks away from Todoroki, he thinks, I did my part, Miyuki. You better do yours!
Across campus, Miyuki and Sanada are walking down the hallway together. Sanada is going on about something that happened in Herbology, but Miyuki isn't paying attention.
He sighs to himself and cuts in. "Sanada, you wanna go to Hogsmeade together this weekend?"
Sanada glances at him. "I thought you spend Hogsmeade weekends with Sawamura."
Miyuki's a little embarrassed that he remembers that. "Sawamura wants to go with some of his friends this week, so I thought I'd hang out with you."
Sanada considers it. The longer he takes to answer, the more he puts Miyuki on edge. Come on, Sanada. Just say yes.
Finally, he smiles and says, "Sure, that sounds like fun. But drinks are on you!"
As Sanada laughs to himself, Miyuki thinks, I did my part, Sawamura. This plan better work.
He doubts it, though.
"Miyuki, Sanada-senpai, what a coincidence running into you here!" Sawamura practically screams. He's dragging Todoroki with him to where Miyuki and Sanada are, standing in front of the entrance to Three Broomsticks.
"Miyuki, you didn't." Sanada says.
Miyuki avoids his gaze. "I have no idea what you mean." Sawamura, you've doomed us both.
That's how they all ended up sharing a booth, with Sanada glaring bullets at him and Todoroki doing the same. Sawamura looks around at all of them, confused at the silence. Miyuki slumps in his seat, resigned. He's not surprised, because this is what he expected to happen. This is why he hates double dates.
They're awkward and uncomfortable and about as intimate as making out in front of the entire school. At best, it's a competition to see who can "out-couple" each other. At worse, it's like it is right now, filled with awkward silence.
Sawamura kicks him under the table. Say something! his face seems to be telling Miyuki.
He gives him a look back that says, What do you want me to say? But Sawamura is looking at him so insistently that he knows he has to make something up.
"Did anyone else catch the Kestrels game last night?"
At this, Sanada perked up. "I did. Their Keeper made some great blocks."
"Their Beater made some great plays too. If Hasegawa keeps up this performance, they really might have a shot at the Cup."
"You think so? The Wasps have a better offense, though."
"You're underestimating the Kestrels' Seeker. He plays better under pressure."
They go back and forth like this, until Miyuki realizes that now he's got Sawamura staring at him along with Todoroki. Both of them look pissed.
"Um, what do you guys think?" Miyuki says.
"I missed the game." Todoroki grumbles.
"I only care about the Harpies, remember?" Sawamura responds in the same tone.
Back to silence. Only this time, the mood is icier than before. He almost cries with relief when the waitress puts down their Butterbeers.
Todoroki lightens up for the first time all afternoon and quickly slurps down his drink. Miyuki hears quiet laughter next to him, and sees Sanada giving Todoroki a fond look. Wow, he must really be in love, he thinks wryly.
Sanada takes a few sips of his own drink, then said, "Huh, I'm not that thirsty. Raichi, do you want my drink?"
Todoroki looks up, startled. "Are you sure?"
He pushes it in Todoroki's direction. "I'm sure."
Todoroki smiles and grabs it, taking a big gulp of the sugary drink.
Sanada watches him and says, "Remember when Mishima dared you to a Butterbeer drinking contest?"
"Oh yeah! And then you showed up and drank more than the both of us."
"You both have weaker stomachs than I thought. I expected you to put up more of a fight."
"You have a monster stomach, Senpai."
"And then when we passed Coach on the way back, you threw up on his shoes." The table shakes with Sanada's laughter. "The look on his face!"
"That wasn't funny for me! Dad made me run laps at the end of every practice for a month."
"He's so cruel to you." Sanada jokes. "Oh, there's foam on your lip."
Without even thinking about, Sanada reaches over and brushes his hand softly against Todoroki's lip. Todoroki blushes instantly, which makes Sanada blush once he's realized what he's done.
For once, the mood seems to be going in the right direction. Which means it's time for Miyuki and Sawamura to disappear.
He's about give Sawamura the signal to leave when Sawamura slams his hands on the table and stands up.
"I have to go to the bathroom!" he yells, then promptly stomps off into the direction of the bathroom.
"Uh, me too." Miyuki says, taken aback.
When he gets to the bathroom, Sawamura rushes up to him.
"Did you see that? It's pretty obvious now to anyone how Sanada feels." he says excitedly.
Miyuki nods. "Yeah, this is going way better than expected. We should—"
"We should wait in here for a bit then sneak out of the back exit." Sawamura talks over him.
"That's exactly what I was going to say." He puts a hand on Sawamura's forehead. "Are you alright? I've never seen you be this be this reasonable before."
Sawamura smacks his hand away. "I'm serious about this, Miyuki. Raichi and Sanada-senpai deserve to be happy."
Miyuki smiles and ruffles his hair. "I feel the same way. Let's check and see how they're doing."
They wait around the bathroom for a bit. Eventually, Miyuki opens the door slightly and peers around it with Sawamura. Sanada and Todoroki are talking to each other and looking around, though more often than not they keep their eyes on each other.
Sawamura follows their movements intently. "Man, I wish I could hear what they're saying."
Miyuki pulls out his wand from his pocket. "We can. Audientia Augere!" he whispers.
The outside noises around them quiet down except for Sanada and Todoroki. It's almost as if the room had darkened except for those two, who had a shining spotlight on them.
"I guess Miyuki and Sawamura snuck off without us." Sanada says. "Then again, I can't blame them for wanting to be alone."
"Yeah." Todoroki agrees.
"In that case, do you want to go to the tea shop together? They've got better food."
"Really? Sure!" Todoroki says, grinning. Sanada responded with a wide smile of his own.
They get up to leave, putting back on their coats and scarves. Then the smile on Todoroki's face drops, and he shakes his head.
"Senpai, you don't have to do this."
Sanada pauses in the middle of zipping up his coat. "Do what?"
"Be nice to me." At Sanada's confused expression, he says, "That's not what I mean. I don't want you to be mean to me, but you don't have to force yourself."
"I'm not forcing myself to be nice to you, Raichi. Why would you think that? Is that why you've been avoiding me?" he asks, a hurt tone leaking into his voice.
Todoroki shakes his head again, frustrated. "You're one of the best people I know. You're nice to everyone and you always try to help people out, even if you don't want to. So you don't have to take me out to be nice. You should do what you want to do."
Sanada swallows, and with a determined look on his face he grabs Todoroki's hand. "Then the truth is, I really want to go out with you. Like on a date, instead of just friends."
Todoroki is shocked into silence. Sanada's grip trembles the longer the silence goes on.
"Um, is that okay?" Sanada asks.
"What? Yes!" Todoroki blushes. "It's okay."
They walked out of the pub, hand in hand.
Sawamura turns around to give Miyuki a high five, shouting, "We did it!"
The bathroom door swings open in the middle of their celebration, hitting Miyuki in the back of the head.
"Ow!" he yelps. He turns around to see Kuramochi staring at the both of them.
"Oh." He's at a loss for words.
"Kuramochi, we can explain." Sawamura begins.
Kuramochi puts a hand up. "I don't wanna know. If you two are involved, it's definitely something stupid."
He shoves past them. "Now move out the way so I can piss."
"I heard Sanada-senpai wants us to go on a double date next weekend." Sawamura tells him, a few weeks later.
"No way," Miyuki says, not even bothering to look up from his homework.
He collapses in the seat across from Miyuki. "Come on! It'll go better this time."
"No. Now do you want help with Potions or not?"
Sawamura pulls out his textbooks reluctantly. "Party pooper."
As they're working on their separate assignments, Sawamura says, "It wasn't an accident."
Miyuki pauses what he's writing. "Huh?"
"You said that before, that we got together because of an accident." Sawamura explains. "But helping Sanada-senpai and Raichi, I don't think that anymore. I think we would've ended up together, no matter what happened. Because if we feel this strongly about each other, why wouldn't we find each other eventually?"
He can't look away from Sawamura. Sawamura mesmerizes him in a thousand different ways that he's gotten used to since they started dating. And yet, he still has the ability to surprise Miyuki with his words.
"Sorry, I guess that sounded weird." Sawamura replies at his silence.
"No, I mean, Sawamura I…" Love you, he thinks, and it scares him how strongly that thought makes him feel. It's almost overwhelming.
"I feel the same way." he finishes lamely. He beats himself up about how much of a coward he is, how Sawamura deserves someone who isn't afraid to share his true feelings.
Sawamura smiles at him just the same, though, and it fills him with warmth just like it always does.
Miyuki hopes that one day, he'll be able to gather all the Gryffindor courage he has inside of him and tell Sawamura those three words.
