For the first time, Julia could hear the hesitation in Minho's voice.
"N-not exactly." He confessed and Nicole's smile seemed to drop.
"But he had dreams about you." Julia chimed in. They both looked at her quite confused. Her cheeks were still red and wet from crying. "Anyway, let's go to Jorge."
"Who's Jorge?" Nicole asked.
Thomas looked around after waking up. He felt dizzy and he swore he was going to puke. He saw some guy make his way over to Julia, but she dismissed him quickly.
"How long was I out?" He turned back to Teresa and Minho. They explained everything to Thomas – or at least as much as they knew. "Where's Newt?" Teresa glanced at him at Minho, but he stayed silent for a while. As if sensing something Nicole walked up to them and introduced herself to him.
"I wonder where he is, too. I don't see him for almost three years and that bloody idiot goes for a trip around a city." She tried to light up the mood but failed miserably.
"What's up with Julia?" He motioned the girl with his head. "And who's that guy?"
"He used to be one of the Gladers. He… kinda freaked out." Minho didn't want to go into the details. It wasn't his place, anyway. "His name's David."
They all heard footsteps and Newt walked into the room his face turned to the floor. Nicole shot up so quickly she startled him. He looked up looking completely ridiculous.
"Nicole?" He whispered in disbelief. When he said her name she couldn't help but ran up to him. He brought her closer.
"You remember me." She cried into his shoulder and he nodded rapidly.
"How could I forget?" How could I forget? Minho thought sarcastically. How about, because they wiped your shucking brain?!
"Where's Bertha?" They here Jorge asked and Markus pleaded him not to take her.
"Who's Bertha?" Thomas asked.
"Oh, you're gonna love her, hermano." Then he turned to Markus to beat him up some more.
Julia could no longer bear the sight and she quickly left the room. While she was walking away Thomas noticed how crimson her cheeks were. David tried to catch her hand but she slipped away. Surprisingly Newt didn't even spare her a second look. Nicole whispered something to him but he shrugged numbly.
"I'm gonna be back soon," Thomas whispered to Minho and Teresa. "I just need some fresh air." They nodded understandably. He followed Julia out and found her near the building in an alley. She was leaning against a wall as hot tears were streaming down her face. Though, when she saw him coming she quickly composed herself.
"Hey, what's wrong?" She almost believed he was concerned.
"Nothing." She tried not to sniffle.
"Alright, how about you tell me the truth." He suggested with a raised eyebrow. She wondered why exactly it was him who followed her.
Minho might have been too engaged in looking at Nicole and trying to find it in himself to speak up. Nicole was stack with Newt. For obvious reasons, she didn't want David there. She still didn't understand why didn't Frypan nor Teresa game.
"Why do you even care?" He was stunned so she continued. "C'mon Thomas, it's no secret we don't trust each other." She managed to chuckle at the expression that appeared on his face after her comment. "You seriously thought I didn't notice all the glares you've been giving me this whole time?" He swallowed loudly.
"I had no idea you noticed those."
"I'm not blind you know." She said somehow playfully. It surprised even her, but she figured she didn't care at the moment. "Newt… he trusts you."
"Are you guys… over?" She shrugged.
"It seems so. Yeah…" She tried off looking at the ground. "I know you won't believe me when I say I only ever wanted for him to be safe and happy-"
"I don't even know what happened." Thomas exhaled. "But… He was happy with you." He felt a sudden need to comfort Julia. He didn't see how she could hurt him.
"Well not anymore." She laughed cynically. Even Thomas could tell it was way out of character. "Just… I know I have no right to ask that of you, but… take care of him, okay? He… went through some atrocious stuff, mostly because of me." The pain and guilt in her voice were so clear Thomas could almost see it. He wondered what she meant by that. "I never wanted to hurt him." She couldn't believe she was breaking down in front of Thomas' very eyes.
"I believe you. In fact, I think he knows it too. No matter what went down between you, too." He told her and put his hand on her shoulder. Her head shot up so abruptly it made her neck hurt. "And I won't let anything bad happen to him." Her watery eyes met him and she found her in herself to smile.
"Thank you." He nodded. Seeing her like this didn't feel right.
"I don't know what I did to… lose your trust-"
"You really can't remember?" She nodded at the confusion in his eyes. "You worked for them. I mean I must've, too. When they order me to leave the Glade and threatened what would happen if I didn't… You were there. When Nicole, David and I tried to rebel against WICKED you stopped us. I was shot in the stomach and I'd been unconscious until Teresa unplugged me." Thomas absorbed all the information slowly.
"I'm very sorry."
"It doesn't matter now, I guess." She told him. "I mean… I've done some shucking insane shuck, too. As long as Nicole and David forgive you, I think I'm gonna be fine."
"Nicole's Newt sister, isn't she?" When Julia confirmed he continued. "And who's David?"
"He used to be a friend, until one day he tried something…" She didn't tell him what, but he got the idea. Blood boiled in him only at the thought, but he let her continue. "After that, he ran inside the maze. I thought he was dead. But back at WICKED, it turned out he was alive and that what he tried to do… for some insane reason, WICKED controlled him – they made him do, I mean, try that."
"I never told Newt of anything that occurred at WCKD's headquarters."
"That's why he's… mad?"
"He's resentful. I risked his sister lives, I thought she was dead and I didn't tell him that because I feared this would happen. But maybe this all could've been avoided if I were honest from the beginning." She sighed.
Thomas didn't know what to tell her. He didn't want to comment the matter. He believed that she didn't want to hurt Newt. Yet he understood why Newt was mad. He just couldn't imagine them separately.
"We should head back. Jorge seemed to be almost down when I left."
"You're right." She pushed herself off the wall. "You think safe-heaven is a real thing?"
"If I didn't we wouldn't be here."
