Jorge took them to Bertha, which turned out to be a van. Most of them gave him a confused look but didn't argue when he told them to squeeze into the back seats. Newt whispered something into Nicole's ear and moved to the front seat when she nodded in agreement. Julia's gaze followed him longingly but not even once did he turn to her.
She sighed taking a seat next to the window behind the driver's seat. David wanted to sit next to her, but Thomas outran him.
When Thomas and Julia came back, everyone else was ready to leave. David was by her side as soon as she entered the room, and though Newt would never admit it, Thomas noticed how hurt and disappointed he looked when the girl did not push David away.
Meanwhile, Nicole was talking apprehensively to both Minho and Teresa.
"Kids, we gotta go if we want to reach mountains before dusk," Jorge called out to them, having put his backpack on.
"Alright," Thomas agreed. "Take us to Bertha."
Most of them were excited, given it had been a lifetime since they didn't have to go by feet. Besides, those mountains were the most exquisite thing they had ever seen.
Minho gasped soundlessly when he felt a warm palm cover his own. He looked up to see Nicole looking past him, gazing at the picturesque view.
"It's magnificent," a whisper escaped her mouth as a smile spread as she observed.
Julia tried to appreciate it as well, but considering the circumstances she found it hard to enjoy it. Little did she know Newt was glancing at her every now and then through a car's narrow window.
Everything that had occurred back at Marcus' came back to him and suddenly became too real. A pinch of regret crept into his mind, and he tried to shake it off unsuccessfully. The very thought of David being so close to her made him sick. What's more, he was the one to push her even closer to him. And after everything that shank had done to her.
With a corner of his eye, Jorge gave the poor boy a wary glance. He had no idea what came down between two lovebirds, but he knew he had to act gently with them.
He was also worried about Brenda. Whatever had happened back in the almost abandoned city, had a giant impact on her, and she was acting alarmingly out of character. She didn't even look at him. Though the girl allowed him to hold her after he had found them at Marcus' there was some, not specifically coldness, but numbness in her. He had thought he liked Thomas, yet he wasn't so sure anymore.
None of them had known for how long they were driving when they reached the mountains. They had to stop for the road turned out to be covered in rusted cars.
"All right, kids, I guess, we're on feet from now on," he announced and walked out of the car, slamming the door afterward. They all followed in his footsteps.
That's when someone fired at them.
"Everybody hide!" Thomas yelled at them to take cover, and soon they were all behind or under vehicles. They waited patiently. Thomas decided it would be a good idea to look around for whoever was attacking them.
Another gun was fired barely missing his head.
His voice echoed as he asked what they were going to do. Julia saw Jorge give him something, but she couldn't make anything of it. She was hardly breathing when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned briefly to see Nicole with a worried expression. She nodded to calm her friend yet she knew it didn't work. They both turned when Jorge yelled.
"Everybody run to the truck when I tell ya to," he announced. "And hold your ears."
Yet, before he could have done anything, someone crept behind him and told him to drop the device that he was holding. She - or at least the tone of the person's voice made Julia think it was a girl - repeated the sentence, this time it came out squeakier.
"On your feet now!" She yelled again. "Don't be stupid."
"I know that voice," Nicole whispered and stood up before Julia could stop her.
"Stop or I'll shoot ya!" The girl screamed, but Nicole dared to take another step.
'You're from Maze B," Nicole's voice was shaky for the fact she was pointed at with a loaded gun. Newt was by her side in mere seconds, holding her back.
"How'd you know that?" The girl asked obviously startled by Nicole's knowledge. Nicole could not answer for Aris stood up and also walked up to them. A smile slowly crept onto his face. The girl put the gun down.
"Harriet?" The boy asked with tears in his eyes. She didn't answer just ran up to him and pulled him into a tight embrace.
"Sonya's here, too," Harriet cried into Aris' shoulder.
"She is?" They were all standing at this pointed looking at two friends for answers when Minho spoke up.
"Um... I'm glad you guys have a little reunion, but mind telling us what's going on?" Harriet and Aris turned to him, and the boy said the most obvious thing at this point.
"We were in the maze together." After that Harriet yelled into space for 'guys to come down'.
Later they got to meet Sonya, a beautiful blond girl. They took them to a small base on the other end of the road. Meanwhile, Harriet partially explained to them why they were there and where they would go. 'Some other base' she yelled to some guy.
"How did you know she was from the Maze B?" Julia whispered well aware that Nicole used to work for WCKD a long time.
"I always loved her hair," She shyly admitted and Julia couldn't help but giggle at the confession.
"Get in," Harriet ordered.
"Wait," Thomas raised his hand in confusion. "You know where the Right Arm is?" Harriet and Sonya exchanged a knowing look with smirks.
"Hop in."
