A/N: I decided to reread this story last night and found out that I have a good bit written. So I'll probably post what is already written, and I may do some more work on it. We shall see. For now...here we go.
Regina had placed the call, and scheduled the sonogram with Whale. She didn't know if it would help, but she hoped it would. Of course, if he told her that she was carrying a boy, that would do nothing for her.
She laid on the bed, eyes closed, trying to keep herself calm. The baby was moving. Something pressed, and then moved back. Opening her eyes, she pressed her hand against it.
Beside her, Robin leaned forward with interest.
"Is it-?"
"Yes," Regina lifted her hand. Robin smiled. Regina hesitated for a moment, and then pressed his hand over the spot in her abdomen. Robin flexed his fingers against it. Beneath his large hand, something moved.
"Oh...Robin breathed." Regina smiled at his enthusiasm. She felt bad. If this wasn't his child, if she couldn't keep it, she'd crush him.
"Ok," Whale entered the room, "let's get started." Robin squeezed Regina's hand. She nodded nervously.
She flinched only a second as the gel hit her skin. Robin's hand was warm and solid on hers.
Whale studied the screen, he brought the image in closer.
"Hmm."
"'Hmm'?" Regina asked.
"Something odd always shows up on your ultrasounds." Whale frowned at the screen. "I don't understand it at all. It's always," he pointed along the side of the screen, "there."
"Well what is it?" Robin pressed.
"I'm not sure." Whale zoomed in on the screen. Regina could see one of the images becoming bolder. She didn't need Whale to guide her to what she was looking for.
"That's the baby." She stared at the screen. "On the left." Whale turned, following her line of sight.
"Yes, that's it." He traced his finger along the screen. "There's the head. And the nose. There's one hand-I can't find the other right now."
"Can you tell what it is?" Robin sounded annoyed.
"I'm sure I can, it's big enough." Whale zoomed in on the screen. "Wait, what-?"
"What?" Regina and Robin both exclaimed.
Whale heaved out a sigh. He took another look at the screen before turning to face them.
"Well," he motioned to the screen, "I've finally identified that mark."
"What is it?" Regina demanded. Whale searched for his words.
"It's a second baby, Regina. Twins."
He let his words go for a moment. Robin tensed. He could only imagine her reaction. He waited, held his breath.
"Twins?" Regina whispered. "Twins? Two? There are really two in there?"
"I warned you that might be a possibility." Whale looked up at the screen and then back to Regina. "When you were so sick in the first trimester, that can be an indicator."
Regina pressed her face into her hand. Her head was pulsing. Now there was the chance that not one, but two Sidneys were living inside of her.
"Two." She whispered the word. "Two." She knew the men were waiting, they were wanting some type of reaction. She thought they expected hysterics. She didn't feel strong enough for them now.
"What's the sex?" She lifted her head. "What am I having?" Whale looked at Robin. Robin merely shrugged. Whale moved the transmitter once more. He zoomed in, examined closer.
"Well, I can tell the one. You are having a girl." He pointed to the large image on the screen.
Regina looked at the monitor. She focused on the image. She'd told herself she could do better with a girl, that she could raise a girl because a girl would be like her...not like Sidney. Now she had that chance.
"A girl." She nodded firmly. A daughter. Her daughter. Robin's daughter. "What about….what about the other one?"
Whale switched focus. He examined the other baby. Regina could now see the faint image of the child's head.
"I can't tell on that one., so it won't be a surprise to you that it's a 50/50 chance of its sex. There's no way we can promise it to be another girl."
Another girl was what she wanted. Desperately. Regina didn't want a boy. She couldn't handle one in this case.
"Why is it so small?" The words came out nervously. Regina knew why. At the end of the day-boy or girl-that was her child too. If it was unhealthy….
"I don't know." Whale didn't look up from the monitor. "It might just be small. It might always be small. It might have some growing to do to catch up with its sister. I can't say for sure."
"Does it need...something?" Regina asked cautiously. She'd seen the movies, read the books, where a baby needed surgery before birth. She knew full well Storybrooke didn't offer that.
"Not that I can tell." Whale turned to her. "We need to keep vitamins into you, and we have to get your stress level under control." Regina frowned, but Whale shook his head. "Regina, I mean it. We're getting further into this pregnancy, and your blood pressure is damn near uncontrollable. Do you want a list of health issues you are setting yourself for?"
"I'm sorry." Regina slumped back on the pillows. "But this pregnancy isn't exactly relaxing. I didn't decide on this. It's hard to relax when you might be-."
"I know." Whale cut her off. "I know what's wrong. But Regina, your health is seriously at risk. I don't care how you feel about these children, you have two others at home that you have to think of. If something happens to you, Henry and Roland lose out."
Robin's hand tightened on Regina's. He watched her tense for a fight, but Whale was right. He didn't want to lose her over this.
"Regina," he began gently, "please. For me. For the boys."
It hurt. It hurt to tell her not to think of the little girl they now knew was coming. But Regina wouldn't respond to that. She certainly hadn't so far.
Regina lowered her head sadly. She didn't know what to do anymore. She'd tried therapy, but she was now at a loss.
"What do I do?"
"We all know stress management isn't your best feature." Whale rolled his eyes. Regina narrowed her eyes.
"I don't have to listen to a man who got his degree from a curse."
"Enough." Robin muttered.
"Sadly, I'm your best option." Whale put the transmitter away. "You need to find exercise, meditation, anything that will calm you down. I don't want to put you on medication, but if we don't get things under control soon we'll have to."
Regina nodded, squeezing Robin's hand.
"I'll try. Really."
