I'm back! I finally finished this chapter.
"So, how long has it been since they broke up?" Sam asked.
Emily chuckled, her head resting on his shoulder. "About thirty years ago," she supplied. She smiled softly, watching her father and Ellie sleep, leaning on each other. "You know," she continued, "I don't think Dad ever stopped loving her."
"Ellie was married, right?"
"Yeah, she got divorced last year, remember?"
Sam nodded, looping an arm around her. They were sitting in the hold of a cargo plane, their ticket to BioSyn's sanctuary. By Emily's estimates, they were probably within an hour of the sanctuary. Both she and Sam had slept earlier in the flight.
"Hey," Sam said after a while, "did Casey ever leave the dig? I know he had that new job."
Emily nodded. "He left last week. There's not a single member of the old dig team left besides me. Paleontology just doesn't pay like it used to…"
"That's why it's a good thing that I make decent money."
"Decent?" Emily deadpanned. "You make twice as much as I do."
"Yeah, trophy husband and all."
Emily chuckled quietly and they fell silent again, content in each other's company.
"Oh yeah," Sam said after maybe ten minutes. "I'll be in Pennsylvania for three weeks on my next trip, since I took a week off to do this."
Emily sighed, already mentally running through the dates he'd be gone and what she'd be doing.
"Sorry…"
"No, don't be. I'm the one that pulled you into this. I'm sure Dad can help me with Becca."
"Don't blame yourself, we've talked about this. If you're going to go get involved in some dinosaur shit, I'm coming with you.
Emily stretched her legs out, deadpanning, "You forgot to add again after dinosaur shit."
"Eh," Sam said, shrugging. "You're the expert at this point."
Emily smiled faintly, rolling her eyes. Beside her, Sam reached down to his backpack and checked for the flashdrive yet again. They'd told no one else they had it.
He sat back, satisfied that it was still there.
"S7, right? That's where we plug it in?" he asked.
Emily nodded. "Yep. S7."
Her eyes flitted back to her father and Ellie as Sam fell silent again. She shook her head fondly. Years ago, she'd made a bet with Tim, probably after one too many beers, on how long it would take her father and Ellie to get back together. And by the way they were completely leaning on each other, Emily was going to win that bet.
After a few minutes, she felt the plane beginning to descend. Across from her, Ellie stirred first, realizing that she was practically laying on Emily's father.
Emily caught her eye and raised an eyebrow, earning herself a faint glare from Ellie. Emily just laughed silently as Ellie woke her father.
He blinked awake, looking startled.
"We're landing," Emily supplied, grabbing her backpack to keep it from sliding across the plane.
He nodded, reaching for his hat. They remained seated until the plane landed.
The pilot opened the cargo hold doors, helping all of them out.
Emily blinked at the much brighter light, taking in the surrounding mountains and busy airstrip.
"There's a helicopter waiting for you over there," the pilot said.
Emily nodded her thanks and glanced over her shoulder, checking that everyone else was behind her, then started walking away from the plane.
Sam jogged to catch up to her, "See that Stegosaurus they're transferring over there?"
She followed his gaze.
"That's the one I was telling you about on the phone the other day."
"Oh, the one you let those students treat?"
"Yep," Sam said, practically beaming with pride. "And they did a spectacular job."
"You let students treat a sick dinosaur?" Emily's father asked from behind them, sounding skeptical and a little surprised.
"With supervision," Sam amended. "I'm not that crazy."
When Emily glanced over her shoulder, donning her hat. She could tell her father had a few choice words he still wanted to say.
But they were distracted as a tall, thin man exited the helicopter. He walked toward them, holding out his hand to Emily, who was in front.
She took it, shaking it firmly. "Dr. Emily Grant. Paleontologist and dinosaur expert."
"Ramsay Cole, communications," he responded warmly. His handshake was steady and firm.
Sam shook his hand next, saying, "Dr. Sam Grant, paleoveterinarian."
Ramsay nodded, moving onto Emily's father, who introduced himself as well.
"Dr. Alan Grant. Paleontologist."
Ramsay chuckled, "That must get confusing."
"From time to time," Sam said as Ramsay shook Ellie's hand.
"You'll be happy to know I'm not a Grant," Ellie warmly said. "Dr. Ellie Sattler, paleobotanist and biologist."
He laughed now, starting to lead them toward the helicopter. "I have to warn you," he said, "everyone is very excited to have all four of you here. Your work is the basis of so much of our knowledge on dinosaurs."
Emily's brow furrowed. Depending on what of her work they were using… Mills and Wu had used her research on Owen and his raptors to create the Indoraptor. If BioSyn made that same mistake…
"You must be confusing us with someone else," Ellie said.
Emily shook her head.
"You know," Ramsay continued, "it's great that all of you are still so close with Dr. Malcolm–"
"Some of us," Emily's father muttered.
"-I mean, sometimes you meet your heroes and they're disappointing, but he's exactly the way you'd want him to be. Such motility of thought. It's incredible."
One look at her father's face had Emily holding back laughter. "How much time do you spend with him?" she deadpanned, mostly to stop herself from laughing. It was a well known fact amongst them that Ian endlessly got on her father's nerves.
"Too much," her father muttered.
Ramsay didn't hear him, "Well, I know that was sarcastic, but honestly not enough."
Emily nodded, ignoring her father.
Gesturing to the helicopter that was now just in front of them, Ramsay said, "Please after you and watch your head."
They climbed inside, Emily's father, Ellie and Sam taking the three seats at the back of the helicopter, and Emily and Ramsay sitting in two lone seats with their backs to the pilots.
Emily fastened her seatbelt, glancing across at her dad and giving him a face. He made one right back, silently telling her to shut up and she patted her seatbelt and nodded to his. Ellie caught what they were doing and shook her head, smiling.
Ramsay signaled to the pilot and the helicopter took off, soaring over the Dolomite Mountains.
Emily looked out the window, holding her hat in her lap. The lighting on the mountains was beautiful, brightening the steep, snow covered peaks. A quick glance at her husband told her that he was itching to whip out his camera and take photos.
She smiled, shifting her gaze to Ramsay as he started to speak.
"BioSyn bought this land for the amber deposits back in the 90s, but we've managed to turn it into a safe haven for about twenty displaced species. The first generation came from Sorna–"
Emily's father stiffened.
"Most of the Nublar dinosaurs that you two helped rescue–" he nodded to Emily and Sam, "-are here too. It took Fish and Wildlife three years to capture the T-Rex."
"T-Rex?" Emily's father asked incredulously as Sam said,
"They weren't going about it very well. It took me two hours and one flare to tranquilize her. When did she come in?"
"Yesterday night. Just before you guys," Ramsay answered.
Ellie sat forward, asking, "And she's the original Rex? From Jurassic Park?"
Emily nodded, "I've never encountered a different one."
"Our aging tests confirmed it," Ramsay added.
Ellie nodded thoughtfully, sitting back and looking out the window.
Emily's father just stared at her and Sam incredulously, as if he was just realizing something. Emily sighed, shifting her gaze back out the window.
As she watched, the helicopter flew over a long, frozen lake, then over a short dam, clearly holding back the water. On the other side of the dam was a thick coniferous forest.
"Aerial Deterrent System: active," a female voice said over a speaker.
"ADS. It keeps the pterosaurs below 500 feet," Ramsay explained.
Emily nodded. Good. They'd learned from previous helicopter disasters.
"I'd been wondering how you kept them contained," Sam said.
Ramsay nodded. "It's restricted airspace too. Just in case."
Emily nodded. They were taking precautions, thinking ahead about worst case scenarios. Another good sign. Still didn't change the fact that they were trafficking dinosaurs though.
"Is that, dreadnoughtus?" Emily's father asked incredulously from his seat across from her.
Ellie gasped as Emily quickly looked out the window.
Far below them, in a lake, there was in fact a dreadnoughtus, reaching out with its impossibly long neck to graze on some trees.
"Oh wow…" Emily murmured.
"Beautiful, right?" Ramsay said. "Her name means–"
"Fear nothing," Emily finished.
He chuckled, nodding.
"What do they graze on?" Ellie asked.
"Hawthorne and fern. All indigenous, nothing stocked except for the deer population for the carnivores."
Sam looked away from the window. "What deer species do you feed? Is it all live?"
"Yes, all our dinosaurs are allowed to hunt for their prey. It's actually a species that was native to Isla Nublar. The, Nublar Tufted Deer I believe."
"Yeah," Emily said. "That's right. I thought they were extinct."
"There was enough of a DNA profile on file to bring the species back and use them as feed. We felt it would be feasible, since a lot of the carnivores hunted them when they were free on Nublar."
Emily nodded. That particular piece of evidence was Sam's research, from when they'd gone to the island in 2018, right before the volcano blew.
"Besides the Rex, what other carnivores do you have?" Emily's father asked.
Ramsay thought for a moment, "Pyroraptor, Composagnathus and Giganotosaurus to name a few."
Emily turned to look at him. "Giganotosaurus? That must be the apex predator then?"
"Yes, you'd be correct."
"You don't let people in there, right?" Ellie asked.
Ramsay shook his head. "No, no people. All our research stations are raised off the ground, and connected via underground tunnels. We conduct all our field research with the utmost regard to human safety."
He added after a moment, "If we have to, we can just herd the animals remotely using a neuro-implant that sends electrical signals directly to the animal's brains."
"Neuro-implant?" Sam sounded concerned. "Does it hurt the animal?"
"We have no indication that it does."
"Still," Ellie said. "Does that strike you as a little bit…"
She struggled for the word and Emily's father finished, "cruel?"
"Do you know how much voltage was in the electric fences at Jurassic Park?" Ramsay countered.
"Yes, exactly how much," Emily's father said, looking Ramsay in the eyes.
Emily quietly supplied, backing up his point, "A minimum of 10,000 volts."
Ramsay glanced between the two of them and conceded with a nod.
The flight continued and they soared over a large, forested valley. As Emily looked out the window, she could see a large, circular building. Grass grew on its roof and there was a large, central courtyard.
"That's the main compound, where we have all our offices, labs and lecture halls," Ramsay supplied.
Emily nodded, glad she'd brought a notepad to take notes on, because there was definitely going to be a lot of information.
The helicopter landed shortly, and they followed Ramsay down into the compound and out into the courtyard.
Emily walked in the back with Sam, watching young, college age kids weaving between the large, brass, prehistoric tree sculptures that were scattered around the courtyard.
Leaning over to Sam, she said, "Everyone's so young…"
"Not that different from being on campus, huh?"
She shook her head.
"We attract the best and brightest minds, and one of our main goals is to educate," Ramsay called back.
Emily just made a face at Sam when Ramsay wasn't looking. Best and brightest… God, it was almost too much, especially given what she knew.
Sam stifled a grin, putting his hand on her shoulder to squeeze it briefly in sympathy.
In front of them, there was a middle aged man approaching. He extended his hand to Ellie, introducing himself.
"Lewis—"
"Dodgson," Emily finished as she recognized him.
He nodded, putting on a smile that felt a little too forced for her liking. "CEO of BioSyn." He shook their hands. "I can't tell you how excited I am to have you all here."
"We're excited to be here," Sam said.
Emily's father made a face that suggested he very much wasn't excited.
Dodgson smiled that fake smile again. "All of you are experts in your respective fields, I might even dare to say legends."
Emily and Sam exchanged a look as he plowed on.
"Do you mind if we take a picture?" Dodgson asked.
Ellie answered for them all, "Not at all."
"Good, good," Dodgson said, arranging them all in a line, and placing himself between Emily and her father.
Two photographers appeared out of nowhere and snapped pictures before Emily was ready. She just plastered on a smile, hating that BioSyn would use this as PR, to make it seem even more like everyone liked them.
Just as quickly as they arrived, the photographers left, talking inaudibly to each other.
Dodgson smiled, turning back to them. "Great, that was good. I have to go, things to do, but you'll be in capable hands with Ramsey. He's like a young me, only better."
Emily glanced at Ramsay and he just looked mildly confused and uncomfortable.
Dodgson appeared not to notice, awkwardly backing away from them. "I hope to see all of you again, maybe we can talk more then. Ramsay, do you have any food? One of those bars?"
"I, no. No, sorry I don't."
Emily exchanged a glance with Sam, eyebrow raised.
"That's alright," Dodgson said. "I'll figure something out."
The CEO waved, and was gone.
There was a long pause, then Ramsay seemed to recover and said, "Right, if you'll follow me.."
He led the way toward a tall building.
Sam grabbed her arm, slowing his pace till they were at the back of the group.
"What the hell was that?" he murmured.
"Good question…" Emily replied. "But it didn't make me feel any better about this."
He sighed, putting his arm around her as they walked. "Just promise that when things go sideways this time, we'll stick together."
"Don't worry," Emily murmured. "After last time, I have absolutely no intentions of doing anything else."
Just in case you were wondering, yes, Emily is absolutely rooting for Alan and Ellie to get together again.
Leave a review if you liked it! I make no promises on when I'll update next, but I will finish this fic and every review helps!
