As the phone rang, Jacob answered on the other end. "Hey man, how you feeling?" he asked.
"I'm doing alright," Adam replied. "I just got out of the hospital today."
Jacob let out a relieved sigh. "Thank goodness," he said. "I was worried about you, man. What happened?"
Adam explained the situation to Jacob, leaving out the details about his strange dreams and his research on REM sleep. "I just need to get away for a bit," he said. "Do you think I could crash at your place tonight?"
"Of course, man," Jacob replied. "You're always welcome at my place. I'll make some dinner, we can watch a movie, just hang out."
Adam smiled. "Thanks, Jacob. I really appreciate it."
"No problem, man," Jacob said. "I'll see you in a bit."
Adam hung up the phone and took a deep breath. He felt a sense of relief knowing that he could escape to the rez for a little while. Maybe being around nature and his friends would help him clear his mind and figure things out.
He packed a bag with some clothes and essentials, making sure to grab his laptop and some books on dreams and sleep that he had found during his research. He didn't want to give up on trying to figure out what was happening to him.
As he snuck out of his house and made his way to Jacob's, he couldn't help but feel like he was running away from something. But for now, he just needed some peace and quiet, and some time away from his confusing and unsettling reality.
Adam waited until it was dark outside, careful to not make any noise as he gathered his things. He didn't want to risk waking up his dad or sister or anyone else in the houses nearby. He grabbed a small backpack with some essentials - a water bottle, a flashlight, and some snacks. He also made sure to bring a warm jacket since it was a bit chilly outside.
Once he had everything he needed, he made his way out of his bedroom window and onto the roof. He carefully climbed down the trellis, making sure not to slip or make any loud noises he did so with surprising ease. Once he was on the ground, he checked his phone for the time. It was almost 10 pm.
He started walking towards the edge of town where Jacob would meet him. It was a bit of a hike, but Adam didn't mind. He welcomed the chance to stretch his legs and clear his mind.
As he walked, he noticed how quiet it was. There were no cars on the road, no people walking around. It was as if the town had gone to sleep and he was the only one awake. The only sounds were his footsteps and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.
After about half an hour of walking, he saw Jacob's car approaching from the distance. He waited on the side of the road, trying to blend in with the shadows. As the car got closer, he could see Jacob's face in the headlights. He gave him a nod and got into the passenger seat.
"Hey man, thanks for picking me up," Adam said.
"No problem, bro," Jacob replied. "What's going on? Why'd you need to sneak out like this?"
Adam hesitated for a moment before replying, "I just needed to get away for a bit. Clear my head."
Jacob nodded understandingly, his tired but eager features showing that he was willing to go along with whatever Adam needed. "I get it," he said, his voice rough with fatigue. "Sometimes you just need to escape for a bit. Where do you want to go?"
Adam shifted nervously, feeling grateful for Jacob's understanding. "It's up to you Jacob," he said, "I was thinking the Rez. It's been awhile since I've been there."
"The Rez is no problem," Jacob replied, his tone brightening a bit. "I think some folks would love to see ya again there."
"Ah, so Seth and Leah are still around," Adam inquired.
"Ey, it's a little complicated," Jacob admitted, scratching his head. "But Seth's only a bit older than me. Course he's still around."
"Yeah, of course," Adam said, feeling a bit foolish for asking such an obvious question. "But things change over time, you know?"
"Well, La Push really hasn't... not much anyways," Jacob said, his voice trailing off as if lost in thought. "Well, c'mon Swan, get your ass in here," he said, opening the door of his beat-up truck and gesturing for Adam to climb in.
Jacob nodded, a tired but eager expression on his face as he gestured for Adam to get into his vehicle. It was a rusty red Ford Tempo, with mud caked on the wheels and scratches on the doors from years of use. The interior was just as well-loved, with a faint smell of old leather and pine air freshener.
As Adam climbed in, he couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over him. It had been so long since he had been on the rez, and he was looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.
Jacob started up the engine, the roar of the old truck filling the night air. They drove down the dark and winding road, surrounded by towering trees and the occasional glimmer of moonlight filtering through the branches.
After a while, they arrived at the rez, and Jacob pulled into a small clearing where a few other cars were parked. Adam could see the faint glow of a bonfire in the distance, and the sound of laughter and chatter filled the air.
Jacob turned to him and smiled, "Here we are, home sweet home."
As they approached the bonfire, the sounds of laughter and chatter grew louder. One of the kids turned around and noticed Jacob, immediately jumping up and eagerly walking over. Adam couldn't help but notice the excitement on the young boy's face as he approached them.
"Seth!" Jacob called out, grinning from ear to ear.
Seth's face lit up at the sight of Jacob, his grin matching his. "Jake! Didn't think you'd be coming, man!"
Adam watched as the two embraced each other in a tight hug, patting each other's backs roughly in greeting. After a few moments, Jacob turned to Adam.
"Seth, this is Adam. We've known each other since we were kids," he mock introduced, turning back to Seth.
Adam rolled his eyes. At Jacobs reintroduction to Seth. Jacob was no doubt a bit jilted he was gone for so long, without much contact. Besides a few letters here and there.
Seth turned his attention to Adam, a look of recognition dawning on his face. "Adam Swan! Damn, where have you been all these years?"
Adam chuckled, returning Seth's friendly greeting with a handshake. "Just been out by my mom for the past few years, highschool was killer and havn't had time to visit"
Seth nodded, still grinning. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. But you gotta come by more often, man. It's always good to see some familiar faces around here."
Jacob roughly grabbed adams shoulder "Well thankfully Adams stuck here for awhile, first order of business is to get him to grow his hair out again"
The bonfire crackled in the background as the trio continued their conversation, the sound of the waves crashing on the shore in the distance. Seth's smile faded slightly as he mentioned Adam's hair, but he quickly regained his composure, focusing on their friendship.
Adam raised an eyebrow at Jacob's comment, "Grow my hair out again? I don't think I can handle the 'surfer dude' look anymore."
Seth let out a chuckle, "Yeah, I remember those days. You used to come out here with your board try to surf and show off for all the girls."
Adam chuckled awkwardly, "And you were always there to remind me that I wasn't as cool as I thought."
Jacob cleared his throat, "Alright, alright, let's not get too nostalgic here. We're all adults now."
Seth nodded in agreement before turning to Adam, "So, what brings you back to the rez?"
Adam took a sip of his drink, "Just needed a break from the city, you know? It's been a while since I've been back here, and I wanted to catch up with some old friends."
Seth nodded, "Well, you came to the right place. The rez may not have changed much, but the people sure have."
As they continued to chat, Adam noticed the warmth of the fire and the sound of the waves slowly easing his tension. It was good to be back, even if just for a little while.
As they continued catching up, another member of the reservation, Embry, approached the group. "Hey guys, what's up?" he asked, greeting everyone with a smile.
Jacob turned to Embry, introducing him to Adam. "Embry, this is my friend Adam. We go way back."
Embry shook Adam's hand warmly. "Good to meet you, man. You visiting La Push?"
"Yeah, just for a little while," Adam replied. "It's been too long since I've been back."
As Embry finished the handshake to, he still wore a smile, but it seemed forced and fake. Adam couldn't help but feel a sudden unease. Embry's demeanor had changed, and it was almost as if something else had taken over him.
Embry's tone turned chilly as he began making subtle jabs at Adam's appearance and lifestyle choices. "So, you're living in the city now, huh? Must be nice, living the high life while the rest of us are stuck here in La Push." Embry's words were laced with bitterness, and Adam could sense a hint of resentment in his voice.
Adam tried to brush it off, thinking that maybe Embry was just having a bad day
"I mean i've always lived in the town… when I came here besides the handful of times i've stayed over night by Jacob's house."
Jacob noticed the tension building and tried to lighten the mood. "Hey, come on, Embry. Don't be like that. We're all just catching up here."
Adam felt a headache starting to flare up, and he tried to change the subject. "So, Embry, what have you been up to lately?" he asked, hoping to redirect the conversation.
But Embry just sneered. "Oh, you know, just living the dream here in La Push," he replied sarcastically. "Unlike you, I don't need to run off to the big city to find happiness."
Adam could feel his frustration rising, but he tried to stay calm. "Hey, man, I'm not saying one way of life is better than the other. I'm just here to catch up with some old friends."
Embry snorted. "Yeah, right. You don't belong here, Adam. You never have."
Jacob intervened again as tensions seemed to just continue to rise. "Alright, Embry, that's enough. Let's just enjoy the bonfire and catch up, okay?"
But Embry just shrugged him off and turned to leave. "Yeah, whatever," he muttered before disappearing into the crowd.
Adam furrowed his brows, confused by Embry's sudden change in demeanor. "What's that about? I thought we were all cool here," he said, gesturing to the rest of the group.
"Sam Uley!" Seth spat out the name, his expression turning sour.
Jacob shot Seth a warning look, but it was too late. Seth was already worked up. "What, Jake? You gonna defend that asshole too?" he said, his voice rising.
Jacob sighed, "No one's defending anyone, Seth. We just don't need to bring up old drama."
But Seth wasn't having it. "Sam broke my sister's heart for no reason, Jake. You can shut the hell up," he said, his fists clenched.
Adam could feel the tension in the air, and he wondered if he had unwittingly stumbled into a feud. "What happened with Sam and your sister?" he asked, trying to diffuse the situation.
Jacob hesitated for a moment, looking uncomfortable. "It's a long story," he finally said, rubbing the back of his neck.
But Adam pressed on, "I've got time."
Jacob let out a sigh before reluctantly launching into the story. He explained that Sam and Seth's sister, Leah, had been dating for a few months when suddenly Sam had broken things off with no explanation. Leah had been devastated and had retreated into herself, refusing to talk to anyone about what had happened.
As Jacob spoke, Adam could see the hurt and anger in Seth's eyes. It was clear that the wound was still fresh, but he couldn't help but wonder if Embry's strange behavior was somehow related to this old drama.
Though it seemed like a sore topic, though anyone who managed to hurt Leah well was a dick plain and simple, and was surely in for a nightmare if the fear she caused, not only him and Jacob but her own brother in their youth was any indication.
Adam turned to Jacob, his expression curious. "I didn't know Leah was involved with Anyone if im honest. Is she okay?"
Jacob sighed heavily, his expression pained. "She's been through a lot, man. Sam broke her heart, and she's been struggling to move on ever since."
Adam felt a pang of sadness in his chest. He had always been fond of Leah, and it hurt him to think that she was going through such a difficult time. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
Jacob shook his head. "I wish there was, but Leah's just gotta work through it on her own. She's a tough girl, though. She'll get through it eventually."
Adam listened to Jacob's story, feeling a mix of sadness and anger at what had happened to Leah. As he was about to say something, a sudden wave of nausea hit him, and he gripped his head in pain. Dark images flooded his mind, of a wolf ripping into flesh with blood coating its fur. Howls filled the air, and other wolves answered in chorus. The wolf's fur seemed to be alive, consuming the flesh of its prey as it tore through them with savage abandon. The scene was so vivid, it was as if he was watching it happen right in front of him.
But the horror didn't stop there. As the wolf continued to devour its victim, patches of fur began to burst out of the human's skin, almost like it was trying to consume them from the inside out. The sight was grotesque and made Adam's stomach churn.
The howls of the wolves continued, growing louder and more frenzied with each passing moment. It was as if they were calling to something, something dark and primal that lurked just beyond the edge of his vision.
Adam's grip on his head tightened as the vision finally faded, leaving him feeling disoriented and shaken. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, but the image lingered in his mind like a nightmare he couldn't shake.
He tried to shake the vision off, but the pain only intensified. He heard someone calling his name, but the sound seemed distant and muffled. The next thing he knew, he was lying on the ground, with Jacob and Seth hovering over him.
"Adam, are you okay? What happened?" Jacob asked, concern etched on his face.
Adam groaned, trying to sit up. "I don't know, I just had this… I'm fine, just a little lightheaded," he replied, trying to play it off.
But Jacob could sense something deeper was going on. "That didn't look like just a little lightheadedness, Adam. Are you sure you're okay?"
Adam shifted uncomfortably, not wanting to share his dark vision with them. "I don't know, it was just a weird feeling. Maybe I just need some fresh air."
Seth and Jacob exchanged concerned glances, but decided not to press the matter any further. "Alright, if you need anything, just let us know," Seth said, patting Adam on the back.
Adam nodded, grateful for their concern, but still feeling uneasy about the vision. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was somehow connected to the Rez, But he didn't want to alarm his friends and risk going back to the hospital or worse, so he kept his thoughts to himself. What was this another new development so soon? Why can he not just get a break.
Seth noticed Adam's uneasy expression and gently nudged him on the shoulder. "Hey man, you okay?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.
Adam took a deep breath and shook his head, "Yeah, I'm good. Just got lost in my thoughts for a bit there."
Seth gave him a reassuring pat on the back, "I know how you feel. Whenever I get too caught up in my head, I like to focus on something peaceful to get my mind off things. Maybe you should try that."
Adam smiled, appreciative of Seth's efforts to cheer him up. "Thanks man, I'll give it a shot."
He remained fairly quiet the rest of the night, but he did take Seth's advice just enjoying the happy atmosphere and the warmth of the fire that danced below the moonlight
"Did it work?" Seth asked, before he headed home
Adam nodded, trying to put on a brave face. "Yeah, I'm good. Now"
As Seth headed off into the night, Adam made his way over to Jacob's house. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep, not after the vision he had just experienced. The last time he had slept, he had ended up in a five-day coma, and he didn't want to risk it happening again.
But as he settled in for the night, he couldn't shake the feeling of dread that was creeping up on him. The howls of the wolves in his vision still echoed in his mind, and he couldn't help but wonder what it all meant.
Engaging in the hourly spurts of rest throughout the night was not the most fulfilling, but he supposed it was better than nothing, certainly better than ending up in another coma, then came his 5th hour of sleep.
Adam jolted awake to the sound of Billy Black's booming voice. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and tried to focus on what was happening. Billy was demanding that Jacob talk to Charlie and apologize for something, but Adam wasn't sure what. Jacob looked just as confused as he was.
After a few minutes of back and forth, Billy handed the phone to Adam. It was Charlie on the other end, and he sounded angry. "Adam, what the hell is going on? Your mother is beside herself with worry when she called to talk with you, And I check your room and you are not there. You were in a coma just yesterday, and now Billy's calling me telling me you're out the past day in a half with Jacob?"
Adam groaned inwardly. He had failed to tell either of his parents about his plans to stay over at Jacob's. He quickly tried to explain the situation to Charlie, telling him about the bonfire and the vision he had, but Charlie wasn't having it.
"You need to take better care of yourself, Adam. You can't be running around all night after what happened. I want you to come home right now and rest."
Adam nodded, even though Charlie couldn't see him. He could tell that Charlie was only upset because he cared about him. Though the idea of rest terrified him… he lost five days of his life, and now it seems whatever is going on with him has gotten worse. What was that terrible vision last night.
"I'm sorry, Charlie. I didn't mean to worry you," Adam replied. "I just didn't want to sleep and miss school today. I need to get back into my routine."
Charlie let out an exasperated sigh. "Adam, you were in a coma yesterday. You need to take it easy and let your body recover."
"I know, but I feel fine now. I just want to see how a day back at school is," Adam argued, hoping to convince Charlie to let him go.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before Charlie finally spoke. "Fine, but I'm going to call the school and let them know what's going on. And if you start feeling even slightly off, you call me immediately."
Adam let out a sigh of relief. "Thanks, Charlie. I won't let you down."
Jacob looked guilty as he sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm sorry, man. I didn't think about how this would affect you."
Adam sighed. "It's fine. I just need to be more careful. Was my idea anyway jacob if you remember."
Jacob sighed, clearly annoyed at Adam's response. "Yeah! Thanks a lot, man. You know my dad's gonna ground me for the next month now," he grumbled.
The drive went quiet for awhile after that though as they got closer to the highschool, Adam decided to voice something not entirely sure of himself. "Jacob, have you ever felt trapped in dream? Does your tribe have anything like that in their legends?, Jacob's annoyance faded, replaced by curiosity. "Not really," he said, shaking his head. "Some tribes have stories about that kind of thing, but it's not really something we focus on in the Quileute tribe as far as I know."
Adam nodded slowly. "Well, I don't know if it was just a dream, but...that's what my coma felt like. Like I was trapped in a dream, unable to wake up." He shuddered at the memory.
Jacob frowned in concern. "That sounds pretty rough, man. But I don't really know what to tell you. I mean, I'm not exactly an expert on this kind of thing."
Adam looked at him earnestly. "I just don't want to be trapped in a dream again, you know? Do you have any advice or anything?"
Jacob thought for a moment before responding. "Well, I don't know if this will help, but maybe try focusing on something in the real world. Like, really focusing on it. Maybe it'll help ground you and keep you from slipping too far into your dreams."
Adam considered Jacob's advice, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Thanks, man. I'll definitely try that."
Jacob sent a smile Adam's way at that and the quiet returned briefly as they pulled into the parking lot of the school, many eyes seemed to turn towards jacobs car, whether it was at Jacob himself, or Adam due to the coma situation he couldn't say he'd wager it was more the latter than the former though. Which made a certain more relatable teenage dread build within him. He was readying himself to say goodbye to jacob. As he parked. Though Jacob held up his hand,
"Wait a minute man I got something for you,Just hold onto it, maybe it'll help ground you and remind you that you're awake." He then reached into his bag and pulled out a small, intricately woven cedar rose. "This is a symbol of our tribe. My mother made it for me when I was younger, and she said it would bring balance to our lives after she passed."
Adam took the cedar rose and examined it closely. It was beautiful, with delicate petals and a sweet, woody scent. "Thank you, Jacob," he said, his voice filled with gratitude. "I'll make sure to take good care of it."
Jacob chuckled. "Don't thank me yet. I'm not giving it to you, I'm loaning it to you. And you better bring it back in one piece."
Adam smiled, understanding the significance of the gesture. Even if the cedar rose didn't do anything for him, the fact that Jacob was willing to lend him something so precious spoke volumes about their friendship.
As they arrived at the school, Jacob pulled over and Adam got out of the car. "Good luck today, man," Jacob said, giving him a reassuring pat on the back. "And remember, if you start feeling like you're trapped in a dream again, just focus on that cedar rose. It might help ground you."
Adam nodded, feeling more at ease than he had in days. "Thanks, Jacob. I'll see you later."
Jacob waved goodbye and drove off, leaving Adam alone to face the challenges of the day ahead.
A.N. This was originally gonna cover both the Rez visit, and Adam's perspective of his school day before alice/jasper intervene, but opted for just the rez visit because the chapter was getting long, and this way we will get Adam's perspective as well as the actual conversation with alice, and who knows what else. The cosmos are yearning for more content it seems.
So you may have noticed some events that arn't talked about or shown until the 2nd book/ movie are shown here wonder why that is? Also the car jacob is driving is actually Billy's car in the book I went this route because I knew he wouldn't have the car he has in canon yet, so figured he'd borrow his dads.
Hope everyone enjoys this update, things will be gradually picking up the pace from here.
