"Carter!" Jay's voice was filled with enthusiasm as he moved forward to embrace her, laying his cane on the table. Once he released her, "We really didn't do a great job of going back and forth for visits, did we, kid?"
She shook her head, wondering why he didn't answer her initial question, "We both got much busier than we imagined.' She changed the subject, "Barry needed to come over here for some help and I missed you."
Jay placed a kiss on the top of her head, "Where are my manners? Let me introduce both of you to Dr. Joan Williams. She's been helping me get my speed back."
Carter moved closer to the woman, offering her hand, "It's nice to meet you. I hope you're having some success getting him back to his former self. Running isn't as fun without him," she glanced at Barry, "Do you want to tell Jay why we're here?"
Barry began explaining how he needed help after suffering an antimatter injury while Carter zoned out from the conversation. She was wondering if she should tell Jay her news or keep things to herself. Her instincts were leaning toward the second option because of Joan, who looked just like Barry's mother.
"Are you alright?" Jay asked as he wrapped an arm around Carter's waist while Joan was working on Barry, "You don't really seem yourself," he added.
She nodded, "I'm good. Just sad that we didn't see each other more, I guess. But, we're together now and that's what matters," she leaned into his touch.
He placed a kiss on her forehead before replying, "Are you planning on sticking around after Barry gets what he needs or are you heading back? I really miss you around here," he confessed, lowering his voice as he moved his lips to her ear.
Carter sighed before she spoke, "I have to go back. There's something really bad coming and I can't let Barry and the others face it alone. We could really use another speedster on our side," she finished with a smirk, placing her lips to his. She smiled against his lips as she felt him deepen the kiss, pulling her onto his lap until she was straddling him, allowing her to feel her effect on him,
"You have missed me," she teased as she rolled her hips over his erection, causing her to gasp. "Do we have time for this?"
"Always," he whispered as he ran his hands over her body.
Once they were done, Jay and Carter rejoined Joan and Barry to find Barry unconscious while Joan was reading poetry to him.
Carter let out a laugh, "I'm not sure what you did to him, but this is how we wake him up on our Earth." Her tone had a bite she didn't intend for as she pulled out her phone and started playing 'Poker Face' by Lady Gaga.
"Did you use the new device on him to get his mind past the wall of antimatter?" Jay inquired causing Joan to nod.
Barry came to and he was in a state of panic. Carter moved to his side, "What did you see, Bar? I could have been the guinea pig for this," she added, earning a frown from Jay.
"No, it had to be me," Barry replied, his voice soft, "I saw a billion different timelines and the only one where everyone lived was the same one where I died. I have to die," he confessed causing Carter to lose her footing.
Jay had his arms wrapped around her to stabilize her.
Carter shook her head, "There has to be another way. I don't accept that," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Joan and I can work on it," Jay offered as Joan nodded in agreement.
Barry tried to sit up but stopped as he was hit with a wave of pain and dizziness, "I need to get back. I have to see Iris," he pleaded, upset by his weakened state.
Joan exhaled, "We can take you back, but you need to take it easy. Do you understand?"
"I'll make sure he behaves," Carter offered, "Take us back to S.T.A.R. Labs if you don't mind," she requested, regretfully, wishing she could spend more time with Jay.
"Of course," Jay agreed before he helped Barry up and began the process of taking them back to Earth 1.
Jay, Joan, Carter, and Barry arrived in S.T.A.R. Labs within thirty minutes of waking Barry to find the place in chaos.
"What's going on?" Carter asked, noticing Caitlin was back in Frost's place.
"Cecile was trying to help Allegra," Caitlin began before realizing she needed to give the shorter answer, "There's a meta named Ultraviolet at the Police Station with the power to burn people and any device. Cecile and Allegra are there," she finished.
Carter nodded, "I'm on it. Barry needs to rest." She turned around and placed a kiss on Jay's cheek before she raced out of the room to put on her suit and head into action.
Jay let out a long sigh, "I wish I could go with her. I've never liked the thought of her facing these dangers."
Caitlin was slightly distracted by the new face in the group as she replied, "I wish you could too. She shouldn't even be out there. Can I talk to you for a second?" she requested, causing Jay to nod as they walked away just as Iris walked in and helped Joan get Barry to the medical area.
"What's up?" Jay asked once he and Caitlin were alone, "Why are you worried about Carter? She's always racing off without thinking," he added, frowning as he thought over what he said.
Caitlin shrugged, "It's nothing. This meta is just more dangerous because Carter only needs to make one small mistake to get severely injured," she slightly changed the subject, "How has she been?"
He thought over the last few hours he'd shared with Carter before he answered, "She has seemed slightly off, just not really herself. Is there something I should know about?"
"That woman you brought here," she began, "She is an exact doppelganger of Barry's mother. Carter might be worried that you're meant to be with her. I just wanted to give you that information," she shared, avoiding the other information he would be interested in having, causing Jay to nod.
"Thank you for letting me know," he stated, truly grateful, "I noticed she seemed to have an irrational dislike for Joan and now I know why. She has nothing to worry about, though. I'm crazy about Carter McKinley and no one can take her place in my heart."
Caitlin smiled at his words, making her think of Ronnie, "Let her know that," she placed her hand on his shoulder before she turned to head back to the Cortex to check on Carter's progress with Ultraviolet.
Carter was able to stop Ultraviolet while only suffering a small burn to her arm. She returned to S.T.A.R. Labs to find Jay and Caitlin waiting on her.
"How's Barry?" Carter asked, not even thinking of herself or her baby.
Jay moved to pull her into his arms as he guided her to the med bay, "He's getting better but it'll take a week or so before he's fully healed. Are you alright? You gave me quite a scare, kid," he inquired before placing his lips to her cheek as he sat her down.
Caitlin began treating the burn, knowing she couldn't check on anything else until Carter came clean or Jay left her side.
Carter's lips curled into a mischievous grin, "I told you that you can't be around here on the regular because you worry too much. I'm ok," she changed the subject, "How much longer are you staying?"
"I have to leave once I know you're alright," he replied, his voice soft, "Dr. Williams and I are going to look for solutions for the crisis that's coming. Are you sure that I can't convince you to join us?"
Carter shook her head, "I wish I could because I miss you so much, but I need to be here. For now, anyway. It's ok if you need to head out. We'll see each other soon," she added before she placed her hand on his cheek, pulling him closer until she could take his lips with her own in a passionate kiss.
Jay removed himself from her touch before he spoke, "Don't be a stranger this time, kid."
"The same goes for you," she replied with a wink as she held back her emotions while she watched him leave … again. For the first time, at her request.
"Why didn't you tell him?" Caitlin asked once Jay was gone.
Carter let out a long breath, "The timing wasn't right. Don't look at me like that," she added, "I'll let him know once I'm ready."
