The trio eyed the ground with shaking eyes. Dot finally ended her coughing fit but nobody payed any attention to that. They payed attention to the small, yet beginning to pool, specs of blood. "D-Did I do that?" Dot asked in a hoarse voice. "Maybe.." Yakko replied, still looking at the floor. Wakko unconsciously put his arms around Dot, and didn't dare say a word. "What does it mean...?" Dot asked again. "I dunno, sis." Yakko said, now wrapping his arms around Dot.
That night the three slept huddled together, trying to block out the cold wind. Tremors wracked through their bones as they snuggled closer to each other.
Except, one Warner was restless that night.
"All of that work, for nothing." Wakko whispered, playing with the end of his tail. He crawled out of the grasp of the shaking bodies. He pulled the blanket higher on his siblings before walking out to the middle of the tower. His white bare feet hit the cold ground, and protested within every step.
His whole body still ached from the year worth of work, that went down the drain. He was scared. He really, really, was. He just didn't want to admit it to his siblings. Ever. The thought of him being scared was not what they needed right now. They needed a Wakko who was ready to do anything they put up at him.
He finally managed to reach the middle of the water tower, and sat down on the small stool that was next to his homemade harp (as he liked to call it). He decided not to play it, not wanting to wake his sibs. He instead continued playing with his tail. He sighed, kicking at a rock with his foot.
Knock. Did he hear that right? Knock. Okay... maybe he was not dreaming. KNOCK! He definitely wasn't dreaming. Wakko sat up, and ran to the lopsided piece of wood they called a door, and opened it.
"Hello, dear."
It was Lady.

The moment he heard footsteps Yakko Warner pushed up his covers and ran to the middle of the tower. If one sick sibling made him a worry wart, two would make him bonkers. What he saw was Wakko talking to some random lady at the door.
"Lady! What brings you here?" Wakko asked, looking up at the large woman.
"Wakko Warner!" Yakko yelled, standing by their curtain. "What are you doing?"
Wakko's ears and tail drooped. "Oh. This is Lady, she's the one who gave me the ha'penny!" Wakko said, sticking his tounge out in a lopsided smile, and lifting his ears and tail back to place. Lady? What kind of name was that? "Oh, hello. I'm so sorry I never got to properly introduce myself, Mr. Warner." Lady said. "It's okay, Miss." Yakko replied. "My name is Eveline. What a pleasure it is to meet you." She said. "Pleasures mine." Yakko replied, trying to be as formal as he could. "Have 'y put that ha'penny to good use?" Eveline asked.
Shoot. The ha'penny. "Ehhhh... about that.." Yakko said, him and Wakko sharing the same embarrassed face. Eveline's smile dropped. "Taxes?" She asked. "Yes, Ma'am." Him and Wakko both said.
"Pssst." Eveline whispered, "I'm not on the kings side either. Here, take this." She tossed a few coins at them. "I know it's not a ha'penny, but 's all I got." She said, smirking.
They looked in awe. "Y-You're a saint!*" Yakko exclaimed, holding the bits of change. "Well varmint, I get that often." She said. "G'luck. To the three of 'ya."
"Thank you Ms. La- I mean Eveline." Wakko mumbled. "Y' welcome, kid."

They had went into the office the next day, placing the few pieces of change on the counter.
"Will this be enough, sir?" Yakko asked Dr. Scratchansniff. "You are a few cents short, kidsie." He said. "Please can you give us a... ehhhh, discount?" Yakko pleaded. "No. We live in a dying economy, ja?"
A frown crept onto Yakko's face. "Please, my sister is dying." The answer was the same.
Yakko walked out of the building, cradling his sleeping sister, and making sure Wakko was holding his tail. He was furious. Did the poor in taste elixir dude not get what he was saying!?
Dot's whimper took him out of his thoughts. "Shh, it's okay. Go back to sleep." Yakko's frown deepened. If he could just find small work, he could earn the small amount of money they needed.
"Yakko, are you mad at me?" Yakko stopped in his tracks. "What..? Why would I be mad at you, Wak?" Yakko turned to look at his charge. "Because, I didn't earn enough money. If I had earned more we would have still had money left." Wakko said, his face deadpanned. "Bud, that wouldn't matter. The bloodthirsty monster would have just taken more money if there was any." Yakko replied, kneeling down to face Wakko.
The middle child looked away. "Are you sure?" Yakko nodded, gripping Wakko's shoulder. "Yes, I'm sure."
Wakko smiled. "Thanks."-
"Of course, buddy."

He tucked both siblings into bed. His job done for the day. Comfort and care for siblings...
If only there were someone to do that to him...
