As soon as Ward had shown up Simmons had ushered him into their Lab on the Bus to patch him up where he would tell them what happened, and everyone minus Koenig followed them. Currently, several bloodied patches of Guaze littered the table next to Simmons as she tended to Ward. Naruto as per usual was floating mid-air, meditating, lotus style.
"I'm afraid this might scar." Simmons announced
"Upside, you'll look badass. Dangerous." Skye commented cheerfully
"He's gonna be fine, though, right?" Fitz asked concerned
"He will if you back up and give me some room." Simmons answered as she pushed her boyfriend out of her way
"So what then?" Coulson asked
"By the time we got to the Fridge, it was too late. It was overrun. HYDRA everywhere. We couldn't stop them." Ward answered getting a nod from Coulson
"What were they after?" May asked
"Everything." Ward answered "They took weapons, alien artifacts, anything they could grab."
"I assume that means the prisoners are no longer prisoners?" Coulson asked only getting a nod from Ward
"So Ian Quinn?" Skye asked causing Ward to turn to her
"I'm sorry. He's out. They all are." Ward answered
"And Garrett. Did he get away?" Fitz asked
"Couldn't stop them from taking the Fridge, but I wasn't gonna let Garrett walk, not after what he did." Ward answered as Simmons backed up
"Is he the one that did this to you?" Skye asked
"He was a tough son of a bitch." Ward answered
"Was? Past tense?" May asked
"As soon as I had the upper hand, I put two in the back of his head." Ward answered
"Good." Fitz said
"One for me." Ward said before he turned to Triplett "One for you."
"I would have emptied the mag." Triplett responded
"You're all set. Well, I mean as set as you can be with two cracked ribs, and a zygomatic fracture." Simmons announced
"Uh, for those of you that don't know what that is…" Fitz started
"That's a hairline fracture to the cheekbone." Fitz/Triplett said talking over one another before Fitz glared as Triplett
'I'm getting sick and tired of this attitude that Fitz is giving Triplett, it's completely unnecessary, Simmons has shown no romantic interest in him.' Naruto thought
"Fitz I thought I told you to drop that shit back when we first landed." Naruto ordered
"Your body needs time to heal." Simmons said to Ward "Please, take some time."
"Understood. Thanks." Ward responded before he picked up the S.H.I.E.L.D. harddrive that Skye backed everything up onto "One small victory, HYDRA didn't get their hands on this."
"A hard drive?" Triplett asked confused
"It's all the research our team's ever done, downloaded off the plane and encrypted for safekeeping." Skye explained
"We should probably back it up now that we're in a secure facility." Ward suggested
"First, Skye, I need you on threat assessment. Pull up a list of all the inmates at the Fridge. I wanna know just how bad this really is." Coulson ordered
(A couple hours later – Orientation room)
Koenig had brought everyone into a room that had what looked like a torture chair.
"All right. Just gonna need you guys to answer a few questions. A few psychoanalytic, non-sequitur questions. Well everyone but Maelstrom." Koenig announced
"And why does Maelstrom get a free hall pass?" Ward asked
"Unless you wanna try and force him to answer the same questions I don't think that we have the liberty of forcing him through this." Koenig answered
"A lie detector?" Coulson half asked half stated
"The lie detector, Agent Coulson, another reason that wouldn't work on Maelstrom is he can easily fake the readings." Koenig said
"How can he easily fake the readings?" Ward asked confused
"My ability to interface with Technology mentally." Naruto answered getting a shocked look from Ward "What surprised I would share a tiny bit of what I can do with you?"
"Yeah, a little bit." Ward answered
"That's a tiny portion of the pie." Naruto stated
"Anyways, this baby measures galvanic skin response, oxygen consumption, micro expressions, biofeedback brain waves, pupil dilation, voice biometrics. Ninety six variables in all. Fury designed this himself. He wanted a lie detector Romanoff couldn't beat." Koenig explained
"Did she?" Ward asked causing Koenig to scoff
"Like Fury would tell." Koenig answered
"OK, the sooner we get this done, the sooner we can get to work. So who wants to go first?" Coulson asked
(An hour or two later)
May, Coulson, Triplett, Fitz, Simmons, and Skye had gotten through orientation, Ward was currently going through it while Coulson debriefed Triplett, Fitz, Simmons, and Naruto.
"Marcus Daniels was an assistant at a physics lab where they were trying to harness electrical power of something called Darkforce. Nothing bad ever happens when you work with something called Darkforce." Coulson explained as he handed Triplett a pistol
"It's a form of cosmic radiation, pure negative energy. Unstable, but powerful." Fitz explained "But you knew that already, didn't you?"
"Fitz enough with the jealousy already." Naruto ordered causing Fitz to lower his head "Simmons has shown no romantic interest in Triplett, you need to let it go and back off."
"Anyways, Daniels was exposed, ended up being able to absorb energy. All types unlike Naruto." Coulson continued
"Hey, why do I need to absorb it when I'm already immovable?" Naruto shot back
"But the human brain and heart run on electrical impulses." Simmons said
"Exactly. He can kill with one touch." Coulson said before he turned to Naruto "Well maybe not you."
"I'm guessing he likes to?" Triplett asked "Do we need to put a bullet in him?"
"Unfortunately, it's not that simple. He can absorb the energy of most conventional weapons." Coulson answered
"He sounds unstoppable." Simmons commented before she turned to Naruto with a smile "I'm glad you are coming with us in that case."
"Like Fitz said, his power's unstable. Last time, we managed to capture him by overloading his system with pure light." Coulson continued
"Exposing him to more energy than he could absorb at once." Fitz explained before he turned to Simmons "I'm sure we can engineer some sort of delivery mechanism en route."
"Wait, you are telling me he has a limit?" Naruto asked "Guess that's one thing I have on him."
"That's what I was hoping you were gonna say." Coulson said before he turned his attention to Triplett "You mind flying, being the specialist on mission?"
"Sir, I'll be whatever you want me to be." Triplett answered
"That's what I was hoping you were gonna say." Coulson responded before he walked away
(A couple minutes later – Door to Loading Bay)
Skye, Ward, and May were waiting as Coulson, Triplett, Fits, Simmons, and Naruto rounded the corner, Coulson hit a button opening the door for them before he looked back at May before they continued on their way to the aircraft that Ward rode in on.
(Several Minutes later)
"How can you be sure he's going to Portland?" Simmons asked from her seat
"Daniels was obsessed with a woman there. He called her his only light in the darkness." Coulson answered
"That's almost romantic." Simmons commented causing Naruto and Fitz to look at her "Almost."
"The man's been locked up in the Fridge for years. He must be over her by now." Fitz commented
"Some people are hard to get over. Besides, Daniels is pathologically insane. Single-minded. Obsessive. His powers not only robbed him of a normal life, they also pretty much fried his brain." Coulson explained
"What about the woman?" Fitz asked
"Audrey Nathan. She's how we tracked him the first time. We find Miss Nathan, we find Daniels." Coulson answered
(24 Hours later – Some safe house in Portland)
Simmons and Triplett had acquired Audrey while Naruto covered them, as soon as they took off driving in the other direction Fitz and Coulson drove up and Fitz deployed all of his drones and cranked up their lights to the max but it appeared that what worked once did not work a second time as it seemed that Daniels capacity for Energy had been greatly increased. Daniels seeing that he was not going to be able to get Audrey he quickly decided to leave but not before knocking out all of Fitz's drones and sending Coulson and Fitz skidding across the ground.
Now they were at some safe house, Naruto, Triplett, and Simmons were currently watching over her while Fitz and Coulson monitored them from another room completely separate from the safe house
"We should be safe here." Simmons declared
"I thought he was locked up." Audrey stated/asked
"He escaped from prison." Simmons stated
"You don't have to worry. That's why we're here. We're gonna keep you safe." Triplett reassured
"'We' meaning the CIA?" Audrey asked
"Of course. That's what I said, isn't it? We're the CIA." Simmons said panicking "The Central Intelligence Agency people." Causing Naruto to chuckle
"You're not. You're S.H.I.E.L.D., aren't you?" Audrey asked
"You really need to work on your ability to lie with a straight face." Naruto said causing Simmons to pout
"We're just trying to help. We're not the bad guys." Triplett reassured
"I know. I don't believe what they're saying about S.H.I.E.L.D. The Agency saved my life once before. A few years ago, I saw Daniels at one of my concerts. Front row. Then I started seeing him at all of them. At first, I was flattered. Cellists don't get groupies. But then one night, I saw him outside my house. I was terrified. I begged him to leave me alone. He just stood there saying, I was his light. I didn't understand what he meant until he started blacking out my entire block. I ran and called the police. They didn't believe me. But then a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent came to my door. I don't know why, but I trusted him right away. Something about his face. The handsome part, maybe. He just swooped in. It was like out of a movie." Audrey explained
"You two were close?" Simmons asked
"Very." Audrey answered "He promised me he would stop Daniels, and that's exactly what he did. That's why I know I can trust S.H.I.E.L.D. Phil never lied to me."
"Phil?" Simmons asked
"Agent Philip Coulson." Audrey clarified causing Naruto, Simmons, and Triplett to look at one another
"I've heard the name." Triplett said
"What happened to him?" Simmons asked as if she didn't know
"He died in the line of duty. I don't know the details. We were planning a trip up the coast, and then I got the call." Audrey answered
"You must miss him." Simmons said
"For so long after he died, everything reminded me of him. I still dream about him sometimes. Just us together, laughing. I wake up feeling like he's watching over me. It's nice." Audrey explained
(Later that night – Audrey's rehearsal auditorium)
Fitz had come up with a new way to take Daniels down but it required using Audrey as bait much to Coulson's discomfort and disagreement. Currently, Naruto, Simmons, and Triplett were getting Audrey set up in the auditorium that she normally played in.
"What if he doesn't show?" Audrey asked
"Before they put him away, he never missed a rehearsal, right?" Triplett asked
"No." Audrey answered
"Then he won't this time either." Triplett said
"Don't worry. We'll be close." Simmons said reassuringly
"All you need to do is keep playing until Daniels gets close to the stage. We'll do the rest." Triplett reassured
"Last time, there were two whole teams of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents." Audrey responded
"See up there?" Simmons said as she pointed towards a view room above all the seats "Our best agents are watching. I promise. They won't let anything happen to you. We also have the finest agent for this situation right here." As she motioned to Naruto before they left the stage leaving only Audrey.
Naruto, Fitz, and Simmons took up positions in the rafters above Audrey while Triplett took up a position hiding on the ground.
(Minutes later)
Audrey had been playing for a few minutes when suddenly Naruto picked up something with his Super Hearing
"Naruto, Ward is HYDRA, he killed Koenig." Skye said in a very panicked voice
'I always felt something was off about Ward. Guess that vibe I got from him was the evil kind.' Naruto thought as Daniels walked in
Audrey looked up to see if Daniels was there, and upon seeing that he was just standing there listening to her music she stopped playing getting his attention.
"No. Keep playing. I'm sorry I scare you. I know that I'm a monster. But you're the one that can save me." Daniel said
After 10 tense seconds of silence, Audrey went back to playing as Daniel continued on his way toward her. When he was about 3 feet from the stage Triplett fired up his stage light and put it on full blast and aimed it at Daniels getting his attention, Fitz and Simmons quickly followed suit. Daniels was stunned for about 5 seconds before he fired off a stream of what looked like darkness at Triplett sending him into the wall before turning to the rafters and firing one off at Fitz and Simmons knocking their stage lights out of their hands and stunning them.
'Looks like it's up to me now.' Naruto thought before he created 2 shadow clones much to the shock of Fitz and Simmons before the two clones pulled their stages lights to them with Telekinesis as they jumped down putting themselves between Audrey and Daniels, the original Naruto pulled Triplett's stage light to him with Telekinesis as well and began firing it at Daniels.
Daniels tried to knock Naruto and his clones back with his stream of shadows but it had no effect on them, seconds later Daniels started to scream out in pain and a few seconds later he burst sending a wave of dark force out from the explosion knocking Audrey out and sending her skidding a few feet. Simmons, Fitz, and Triplett quickly made their way down to the stage to check on Audrey.
As Simmons got to Audrey she let out a deep breath.
"Are you OK?" Simmons asked
"Yea, but I could have sworn I saw that agent create 2 copies of himself out of nothing." Audrey answered as she got up to see Naruto and his 2 clones drop their stage lights before they smiled at her "Nevermind that was real."
Fitz, Simmons, and Triplett just looked at Naruto in awe and confusion, Naruto simply smiled back at them before dispelling the clones leaving 2 clouds of smoke.
"I'm sure you guys have many questions, but we need to get back to Providence, just got word from Skye, she says that Ward is HYDRA and that he killed Koenig." Naruto announced causing Fitz and Simmons to freeze in shock
(An hour later – Jet)
"Run that by me again." Coulson ordered from his seat
"When we were waiting for Daniels to show up I picked up Skye saying that Ward was HYDRA and that he killed Koenig in a very panicked voice." Naruto explained for the umpteenth time slightly annoyed
"That can't be right, Ward can't be HYDRA, he jumped out of a plane to get you guys." Fitz said not wanting to believe what Naruto was saying just as Simmons walked in
"I need to apologize to May when I get back. How can I even ask for Audrey to forgive me if I can't forgive May for lying to me." Coulson said before he got up from his seat "I'm going to see how much longer we have until we reach Providence." Before he walked out heading for the cockpit, Fitz, and Simmons then turned to Naruto
"Alright, out with it, what was that back there creating copies of yourself?" Simmons demanded
"They are something called a Shadow Clone that I created by evenly splitting my Chakra into parts. They are completely physical as you guys saw they picked up the stage lights, they also have their own thoughts and emotions. They aren't as durable as me but they can take quite a beating before they dispel." Naruto explained before he took his seat leaving a shocked Fitz and Simmons
(Hours later – Providence)
Naruto, Triplett, Simmons, Fitz, and Coulson exited the jet to find their Bus gone.
"I guess that Ward and Skye took the Bus." Coulson stated slightly shocked
"Where's the rest of the team?" Fitz asked
"I don't know." Coulson answered
"Let's go check the security footage." Naruto said
