Vlad King's Green Bean
Chapter one-hundred and nine: Upper Crust, part two
Uvogin was secured to a sturdy, thick metal post in the ground, chained there and with lots of quirk suppressing cuffs on him. This was to ensure that the super strong, battle-lusting man wouldn't be able to bust free and go on a rampage. Even if Uvogin busting free were a possibility, there were more than enough heroes in the wide open room to stop him; the room was even big enough for Felgrand, the dragon of the Regime, to be in there. And it was Felgrand, applying a rule to Uvogin by using New Order, that would help the heroes get what all information that they could out of one of the four Apocalyptic Kings of the Upper Crust Gang.
The rule was simple; it forced Uvogin to give straight, truthful answers to whatever was asked or demanded of him, at least to the best of his knowledge. With Nemoto of the Regime Inner Circle, as well as Anya Shoda, both dead now, having Felgrand use New Order force persons being interrogated into telling what info the Regime wants was the best way the Regime would be able to gather intel they needed from persons that they were interrogating. Once the rule had been applied to Uvogin, the process of grilling him for what all information he had could begin. "Do you know why you are here?" Izuku asked as he began questioning Uvogin.
The Apocalyptic King growled in bitter annoyance. "Yeah, you hero bastards wanna grill me for what all I know about the boss."
"Yes or no, do you know what Upper Crust looks like?" Izuku asked, deciding to cut right to the chase.
The influence of the rule Felgrand placed on Uvogin via New Order compelled Uvogin with a force he by no means could resist. "Yes, I do know what he looks like."
"Yes or no, do you know Upper Crust's real name?" Izuku asked.
Smirking a bit, Uvogin said, "No, I never got it. I just call him Boss or Upper Crust."
The heroes with Izuku gave off some sighs of complaint. "Describe what Upper Crust looks like," Izuku demanded, his tone and expression firm.
Uvogin then proceeded to give off a general description of what Upper Crust looks like, with a police sketch artist making note of everything as he drew up a profile of what Upper Crust looked like based off of what all Uvogin said Upper Crust looks like. Due to being compelled by the New Order-applied rule, Uvogin was forced to give a truthful description of Upper Crust's appearance. However, by the time that Uvogin had finished describing what his boss looks like, the heroes were shocked to see the drawn up profile the police sketch artist made based on the description Uvogin gave.
"That..." Mina said as she and some of the other ladies looked shocked, "...That looks like Aoyama." Indeed, the police sketch of Upper Crust based off of Uvogin's forced testimony did indeed resemble Yugo Aoyama, the traitorous classmate of Mina and her peers from their class at UA. They never thought that they'd see Aoyama again, especially since Felgrand had actually immolated him at the stake ages ago.
Speaking of, Felgrand spoke up. "...It is Yugo Aoyama? But how? I had burned him at the stake on the offhanded suggestion Lizardy had made ages ago."
Turning to look at Uvogin, Izuku said, "Did your boss ever tell you any of his history? If so, tell us what he told you."
"He said something about how friends of his parents had used surgery to alter the appearance of someone to look like him, then swapped him out with the doppelganger they modified through surgery so that the real him would get away," Uvogin said, "He then started gathering followers to form a gang so that he could one day take his revenge on old peers of his for failing to understand and excuse him." Shrugging his shoulders as well as he could, Uvogin said, "That's all I got, sorry."
"He wanted us to essentially give him a free pass?!" Kyoka exclaimed, "After his actions got several of us killed?! Oh fuck that!"
Izuku wore a look of consideration on his face. "...He was forced into things in the first place by All Might's old nemesis All For One," Izuku began, "And when Dabi took over he did have things run differently to keep deaths from happening. I guess we were so worked up over the deaths caused that we didn't even consider trying to see things from his point of view."
"But even so, his actions got several of us killed back in the day," Hagakure spoke up, "And it's clear he's taken actions since cheating his way out of punishment that further condemn him."
Izuku nodded once in understanding; it was clear that Aoyama, if it really was Aoyama, had by this point done a whole lot. But the number one hero couldn't help but think of if maybe, somehow, he and the others could have done things differently, had shown different attitudes towards Aoyama, had not been so quick to condemn and punish. Yes, they were all hurting and it was to the point thoughts of vengeance outweighed all other reason, but at the very least they should have taken a step back and try to understand where Aoyama was coming from.
It concerned Izuku that, on some level, he and the rest of those from his year of UA's hero course may have at least some responsibility for what all Aoyama, if it was indeed Aoyama, has done as Upper Crust. They didn't do anything he did directly, but their actions against him might have helped to drive him into doing them, which if so meant that Izuku and his peers were partly responsible for creating a villain, due to being too caught up in how they were hurt and their desires to alleviate those hurt feelings by getting some form of vengeance on the source.
A source that they had refused to sympathize with.
After Uvogin was fully interrogated for what all information he had, the heroes met up with the other heroes watching the interns doing work study programs. It was there that Izuku and the others revealed what all they got from interrogating Uvogin, even showing the others the police sketch that was made based on what all they got out of Uvogin. To say that Izuku's peers from his year at UA were surprised would be... a bit of an understatement. There were expressions of shock, as well as at least a few persons voicing their... opinions... on the matter.
"IT'S SPARKLES FANTASTIC?!" Bakugo exclaimed, "WE'RE DEALING WITH THE PRICK WHO ORIGINALLY GOT ME KILLED?!"
"It... would appear that way, Kacchan," Izuku replied, "And if it indeed ends up being the case, then we are at least partly to blame."
A lot of eyes all turned to look right at the number one hero. "What do you mean we're partly to blame?" Juzo asked.
Gently shaking his head, Izuku said, "We were too wound up, too caught up in how WE were hurting, that we failed to even consider trying to understand Aoyama, try to see how HE was hurting. He was being coerced under threat of pain and or death, his parents were also being likewise threatened. It's actually rather impressive that he was able to keep up appearances until we had by chance found him out, now that I give it a bit of thought. Most folks would have long since cracked under such pressure before the point we found Aoyama out at."
"Well regardless of how we had messed up," Kyoka began, "He messed up way worse, so we have to bring him down."
"...We need to try to capture him alive," Izuku spoke up, "And try to rehabilitate him. Give him a second chance."
"After what all he did?" Hagakure exclaimed, "What makes you think he deserves a second chance?!"
"I don't," Izuku said, cutting Hagakure off and drawing surprised looks from everyone else in the room. Izuku, with a resigned look on his face, gently shook his head. "...I don't think he deserves it," Izuku said, "A point was made about how he's done too much by this point. But there's still no denying how part of that is our fault, so giving him a second chance is partly so we can own up for what all we contributed. Also." Looking at everyone, Izuku said, "If we go straight to punishing Aoyama, we would just be doing a repeat of last time."
Scoffing, Bakugo said, "So just execute Sparkles Fantastic, and make sure it's the real one. That'll keep him from trying to get back at us again."
"But what of any family he's got?" Izuku asked, "We do have it that Aoyama's managed to have several children. What if us executing their father, especially if we do so more or less on the spot, inspires them to try getting back at us? Another reason I suggest leniency on Aoyama, on giving Aoyama a second chance, is to try and break the Cycle of Vengeance here. Instead of acting quickly and without thinking of anything aside from admittedly satisfying our own needs for vengeance, our own needs to make ourselves feel better, we need to hold a sympathetic hand out, lend a sympathetic ear."
The other heroes in the room all looked mildly surprised, and some even looked humbled. "...Midoriya has a point," Tenya said, "And he's also showing that he truly deserves to work the pro hero profession, that he's got a true heroic attitude."
The rest of the gathered persons all more or less nodded in agreement with Tenya. "...Okay, we try taking Aoyama alive and rehabilitate him," Setsuna said, "Even though I'm still pissy over how he got Pony's baby's daddy killed."
"I managed to come back, didn't I?" Bakugo replied.
Turning to look at Izuku, Setsuna asked, "But therein lies the million yen question. HOW do we go about getting a hold of Aoyama, Green Bean? I mean, we only got a few hideout locations out of Big Beef in there, he didn't provide any other locations that Aoyama might other have to hide out at."
"We also have to deal with the rest of what all followers Aoyama's got," Yosetsu said, "His many cannon fodder thugs, and the remaining three Apocalyptic Kings, one of which had starved a sidekick from the Red Riot agency to death earlier today."
As the pro heroes pondered how to get a hold of Aoyama, Marley spoke up, "Hey wait, can I see the police artist sketch? It looked kind of familiar."
"Marley, sweetie, investigating a villain of that level shouldn't have to concern you," Kyoka said, "Let us handle everything."
"...Actually, I think we ought to hear your son out," Izuku said to Kyoka, right before having the police artist sketch of Aoyama shown to Marley.
The son of Earphone Jack looked at the sketch for a few moments. "...Yeah," Marley said, "The dude in this sketch looks kind of like this one third year student in the business course over at UA. He's one of Komaru's senpais and, despite being a third year while Komaru's a first year, he's been shown up by Komaru a number of times, although it was never Komaru's intention to show anyone up. He's a chill dude like that."
"...We did get it that Upper Crust has a kid attending UA right now," Izuku spoke up, "Maybe that third year business course student is the student that we're looking for." Plans were then made to go about figuring out if the business course student in question really was related to Aoyama. If he was, then it could be a breakthrough in the Upper Crust case.
The following morning at UA, Izuku explained the situation to Spinner, told him what the heroes wanted to do. Spinner, seeing that it would quickly help get details on Upper Crust, agreed to help investigate the third year business course student. Under the guise of a mandatory blood sample donation drive, Spinner had every student at UA lined up to give blood samples, but first focused on third year business course students. The lizardman principal even had Marley point out the blonde boy in the third year who he said was regularly shown up by Komaru.
A blood sample was taken from that handsome third year student, and after the drive, that handsome boy's blood sample was tested. It did indeed turn out to reveal that the boy was directly blood related to Aoyama, who was confirmed to be alive. Acting on suspicion, Spinner had Felgrand apply a rule to the handsome third year boy so he'd tell the truth when questioned. During said questioning, the boy confirmed that he was the one who let in Oboro Aizawa's group into the school during the school festival, as per what his father had told him to do.
The handsome third year business course boy also gave further details; the heroes got it that Aoyama was having his gang work with the Old Rule Rebellion in return for a few favors once they helped the Rebellion overthrow the Regime. In addition to amnesty from the Rebellion's authority in return for helping them, Aoyama had also demanded that anti-quirkism laws still be heavily enforced. Not to the same level as the Regime mind you, as the Regime has been known to straight up put people to death for breaking anti-quirkism laws, but actual solid enforcement was still necessary.
That actually surprised the heroes, that one of Aoyama's demands in return for lending aid to the Rebellion was that anti-quirkism laws still be actually enforced when the Rebellion takes down the Regime and puts their own rule back into place. Izuku, as well as many others, will admit that the anti-quirkism laws of the authority prior to the Regime were only there so people can claim that there are laws; they were seldom ever enforced to any actual degree, and most of the time those who were made to obey them were able to get away with only paying lip service.
Izuku remembered that Aoyama himself was originally quirkless before being bestowed a quirk by All For One thanks to an arrangement made by Aoyama's parents. Izuku was also further surprised to learn that one of Aoyama's children, his youngest and only daughter, is quirkless. And there was no way that Izuku could forget his own past as having been born and raised quirkless, remaining as one of the twenty percent of people in the world who wasn't special, at least until he had been able to impress All Might that fateful day so many years ago.
Aoyama had sympathetic reasons, sure, and it was clear that he had done what all he had done due to being put on the spot against his will. Even so, there was no way to dance around the fact that Aoyama had done some rather terrible things, both before and since becoming Upper Crust. As such, the heroes and the Regime had to go and bring Aoyama in. They were thinking that capturing Upper Crust would be a challenge, but thanks to having caught Aoyama's son, they were able to set up a trap so as to capture Aoyama without causing too much of a fuss.
Having Aoyama's son call his dad and tell him that he needed to see him at home, the forces of the pro heroes and Regime were able to hide and get into place. When Aoyama himself entered the house and saw his son sitting at an island counter, he was about to ask what was up, only to be blindsided when a bunch of pro heroes and Regime soldiers rushed in, quirks ready to attack and weapons aimed right at Aoyama. Leading the charge was Izuku, who said in a firm but regretful tone that Aoyama was under arrest on suspicion of being the wanted criminal gang leader Upper Crust.
Seeing that there were quirks and weapons trained on him and his son, Aoyama, who Izuku and the others were still surprised to see had somehow been able to escape death and was alive to this day, knew that he had no alternative and willingly surrendered. He was slapped with a pair of quirk suppressing handcuffs, loaded into the back of a police prisoner transport truck, then hauled away to a secure location. He was brought inside, sat down in a chair, secured to said chair, then Felgrand who was very clearly unamused to see someone had tricked him was brought in.
Felgrand was instructed to place a rule on Aoyama to make him tell the truth to whatever was posed to him, and after that was taken care of the heroes and Regime forces proceeded to grill Aoyama for what all he knew. They were able to get details on all of Aoyama's secret holdings, as well as what all crimes he and his men had all been involved in. They also got the extent of what all the Rebellion knew about the Upper Crust Gang, which is not a whole lot; as a start, the Rebellion has no idea that Aoyama, in addition to being alive, is Upper Crust himself. Izuku could only imagine the look on Eraserhead's face were he to learn Aoyama is Upper Crust.
...
"...So what else would you all demand of me?" Aoyama asked as he looked up at Izuku.
"Well for starters, it'd be convenient if you could get your men to all stand down," Izuku replied, "It would make rounding them up loads easier. We especially don't wanna have to take too many precautions in handling your remaining elites, we've been able to capture Uvogin already."
Aoyama shrugged as best as he could against the restraints holding him to the chair, let out an amused hum of a chuckle. "I'm surprised you guys were able to defeat Big Beef. He's a strong, combative minded fellow, he shouldn't have gone down easy."
"Try telling that to Felgrand," Fumikage said, as he was with Izuku while interrogating Aoyama.
Aoyama gave another shrug. "Ah, that'll do it. Not even Big Beef can stand up to the might of that monster." Fumikage kept silent, understanding but still unamused to hear his wife's brother be called a monster. "And I take it Felgrand was used to intimidate information out of Big Beef?" Aoyama asked.
"Yes, Felgrand was used to get information out of your underling," Yosetsu, also with Izuku and Fumikage, remarked, "But not through intimidation, per say."
Izuku gently shook his head. "But we're getting off subject. We want you to get the word out to all of your underlings to surrender to the pro heroes and Regime forces. We can cut a deal for you in return for your assistance."
Aoyama let out an amused hum of a chuckle. "Oh? And what deal is it that you will cut me? Reducing the death penalty to life without parole? An obscene amount of community service? You know, way back when my parents were fretting over me being quirkless, I actually didn't care about it myself. But their fretting nonetheless led to us being placed firmly under the thumbs of actual villains. We were there because, ultimately, we would have been scorned by society solely due to me lacking a quirk at birth. Society itself is to blame for what happened, society is to blame because it's petty, because it's shallow, because if you lack a quirk then you're nothing as far as society is concerned."
Izuku gave Aoyama a sympathetic look, a look that caught Aoyama's attention as he didn't know what it meant, Aoyama had no idea Izuku could sympathize with him better than most. "...Things have changed since the Regime took over."
"Yeah, and for the most part I actually agree with the Regime," Aoyama replied, "Hell, I'd have gone whole hog and pledged the support of my gang to the Regime were it not for the caveat of how the Regime, were it to learn I had escaped execution, would hunt me down and make sure they did the job right. At least with the Rebellion, I can get pardoned and live freely once the Regime's disposed of and freedom returns to Japan, then the world after that."
Gently shaking his head, Izuku said, "What makes you think the Rebellion will actually uphold their end of the bargain?" Izuku recalled, but didn't speak aloud, of how the Rebellion had similarly gotten the late Desumi Yango to help them, only to plan on double crossing her in the end after she had gotten them what they wanted.
Arching a wry eyebrow, Aoyama said, "Aside from how I have enough power with my gang to match the Rebellion point for point, I know of a few secret Rebellion locations, thanks to some men of mine who joined the Rebellion as spies. I get word of even the slightest hint of the Rebellion trying to double cross me, then I will go and send word to the Regime, giving them what all I've gotten. The Rebellion will be as good as defeated, fully and for good, if they try to back out of the tentative little partnership that we have going on right now."
The heroes interrogating Aoyama were surprised to hear what all Aoyama knew; after confirming it was true thanks to a rule Felgrand placed on Aoyama, the heroes realized that they had access to bringing the Rebellion down for good, ending the twenty year-plus nightmare once and for all. Izuku, after thinking about it, realized that Aoyama and his followers could be used by the Regime to turn on the Rebellion, to bring all of them in. After thinking about a few details, Izuku looked up from the where his gaze fell to the floor and looked right at Aoyama.
"...What all were you planning to force the Rebellion to provide in return for your gang helping them overthrow the Regime?" Izuku began.
"Aside from how I wanted anti-quirkism laws to continue being strongly, actually enforced although not to the severe degree they are right now," Aoyama began, "I was planning to demand amnesty for me and all of my followers, as well as demand that I be made a pro hero. I would have my followers work for me in the hero agency I was going to have established."
Izuku nodded once in understanding. "...What if I told you that you can get what all you want anyway, assuming that you join the Regime against the Rebellion instead of continuing to work for the Rebellion against the Regime?"
"Izuku, man, dude," Yosetsu began, "What are you saying?"
"Thanks to knowledge we know Aoyama has," Izuku began, "We can finally defeat and end the Rebellion once and for all, put a stop to their chaos and self-proclaimed heroism that's really nothing more than terrorism. And the Regime can just as easily grant Aoyama what all he wants, hell the Regime would have an easier time giving Aoyama what he wants, than the Rebellion could. There's also how the Rebellion has shown signs of being untrustworthy, chances are they'll try double crossing Aoyama in the end anyway."
Aoyama gave a bemused hmph. "Like the Rebellion would survive trying to double cross me. I can easily have them snuffed out, hell my elite followers alone could take out huge chunks of the Rebellion's numbers, Queen and Ryumaru especially."
Gesturing to Aoyama, Izuku said, "At least be willing to humor me for a moment, Aoyama. Assume that I am able to convince the heads of the Regime to grant you what all you're demanding of the Rebellion right now, in return for helping the Regime take down the Rebellion. You and your men are granted amnesty, and you can be made a pro hero with your own agency. The enforcement of anti-quirkism laws is already in place, and I can easily convince the heads of the Regime to lessen how severely those who violate them are punished." Gesturing to Aoyama, Izuku asked, "Will you be willing to work alongside the Regime in that case?"
Arching a wry eyebrow, Aoyama said, "I'm surprised that you aren't having Felgrand use his vast power to force me into spilling what all secrets of the Rebellion I have to you, Midoriya. What are you playing at?"
"I'm trying to show you that I trust you," Izuku replied, drawing a bit of a surprised look out of Aoyama.
Aoyama hung his head, let out a bit of chuckling. "...You know, you've always been the kind of guy who wears his heart on his sleeve, Midoriya." Looking up at Izuku, Aoyama said, "Alright, I'll humor you for now. If you can convince the heads of the Regime to meet me here and agree to cut me the deal I want, then I'll send word to my men that we're changing teams. If the Regime heads do agree to give me what I want, then as a bonus I'll willingly disclose where you can find Boros Kazekage."
"You know where the Rebellion leader is?!" Fumikage asked, sounding and looking surprised.
Aoyama chuckled a bit in amusement. "Like I said, my spy network within the Rebellion does good work."
Once more, they used Felgrand applying a rule and were able to confirm that Aoyama did indeed know where Boros Kazekage could be found. They didn't make him spill right away because, as per Izuku's word, they were going to trust Aoyama. Surprised that they were trusting him to willingly give them the information they want, Aoyama actually looked a bit touched. He also added as a note that he'd like amnesty for his son they had gotten info from in order to wrangle him up, he was able to figure said son was the one who let in Oboro Aizawa's group into the school festival.
Izuku, before he left to go report all the good news to Emperor Toshinori, said that it as already being considered and will be done, especially since no innocent persons had been hurt. That put Aoyama at ease a lot more, he was worried about his children. Izuku nodded in understanding, getting it that part of why Aoyama wanted the anti-quirkism laws to continue being heavily, actually enforced was so as to ensure his quirkless daughter wouldn't suffer discrimination like what was available back in the times before the Regime.
Times that the Rebellion, should they get their way, would bring back in full.
It was nighttime when Aizawa and Hizashi, both wearing disguises, met with a disguised informant in the bar in Agatsuma Town. The masked person was actually Shihai, but he wore a full-head Halloween mask of a US President from way back in the pre-quirk era, a President who claimed he was not a crook. As such, Aizawa and Hizashi had no idea who it was, only that it was someone from within the Regime who claimed to have intel, intel he had just recently been able to confirm, that he believed will go a long way to helping the Rebellion bring the Regime down once and for all.
"The last guys in the Rebellion I worked with were killed during the attack on Mithralhall Stadium," Shihai said, the mask helping to make his voice sound different due to some echo, meaning Aizawa and Hizashi couldn't even identify Shihai by voice, "And for various reasons, my identity cannot get out to anyone period. Hence the mask that I wore to meet you guys here."
"You say you have intel that would be of use to the Rebellion's efforts in bringing the Regime down once and for all," Aizawa began.
President Shihai nodded in the affirmative. "I first had to confirm the info after I got it, to make sure it's legit. But after secretly following a certain person to where he lives over in Exclusive Heights, I was able to confirm the info I got was indeed legit." Leaning forward, Shihai asked, "How would you men like to know the true identity of Felgrand himself?"
"You can give us Felgrand's true identity?" Hizashi asked, looking amazed.
Aizawa himself looked amazed as well. "With that, we can bring down the Regime's strongest weapon."
"Or turn said weapon against the Regime, Sho," Hizashi remarked.
The rogue underground hero turned to look at Hizashi. "...What are you on about, Mic? Felgrand has Sound Mind, so Shinso can't brainwash him."
"But Felgrand has a fiance," Hizashi pointed out, "It may be villainous of us to do, but we can take Felgrand's fiance, as well as whatever other family Felgrand may have, hostage and hold them so coerce Felgrand to switch teams. Have him take out what all other forces the Regime has, then when the Regime's battered enough, we swoop in and clean up shop before restoring freedom to Japan."
Aizawa looked very much unamused, but there was a clear dash of acknowledging the logic behind such a plan. "You're right, it is a villainous thing to to to take a man's family hostage and hold them to coerce said man to work for us." Letting out a sigh, Aizawa went on, "But it would be an effective method of turning Felgrand against the Regime, assuming we're able to take any of Felgrand's family hostage."
"I know where said family members can be found," Shihai continued, "Although one is a nephew currently staying at the dorms on UA grounds, and Felgrand's sister's husband is a pro hero. Nabbing them may be tricky, but Felgrand's sisters, parents, and fiance ought to be a cinch to nab, assuming that you guys in the Rebellion are able to do things all sneaky-sneaky like."
"What all do you stand to gain from this, President Informant?" Hizashi asked.
Shrugging, Shihai replied, "Freedom. The freedom to do what I want, freedom I can only have if and when the Rebellion overthrows the Regime."
"That will have to be good enough for us for now," Aizawa replied, "Now tell us." Leaning forward, the rogue underground hero said, "Who is Felgrand?"
END, CHAPTER ONE-HUNDRED AND NINE
Author's notes;
This chapter sees Uvogin, otherwise known as Big Beef, interrogated for what all details he can provide on Upper Crust. Although he doesn't know his boss's real name, Big Beef is able to provide a description of what Upper Crust looks like, and to the heroes' shock it their peer Aoyama, who had been able to cheat death thanks to some convoluted efforts on part of friends of his parents. Thanks to Marley, the heroes are able to identify Aoyama's son at UA and, through said son, eventually get a hold of Aoyama himself, letting them effectively end the threat of the Upper Crust gang.
However, it turns out that Aoyama, thanks to his spy network, was able to get enough information on the Old Rule Rebellion so that he could end the whole of it for good if he so felt like, and would use said info to make sure the Rebellion didn't try double crossing him. Pointing out that their lack of sympathy had played a big role in driving Aoyama to do what he did as Upper Crust, Izuku is able to convince some others to the idea of showing leniency towards Aoyama, and they start that by offering Aoyama what he's demanding from the rebels in return for him helping them.
Aoyama, intrigued that he can get what he wants either way, agrees on the condition the heads of the Regime can be made to agree to it. With some cooperation from Aoyama secured, the heroes and Regime forces are on the cusp of bringing down the threat of the Old Rule Rebellion for good. But unbeknownst to them, Shihai wearing a mask went to meet with Aizawa and Hizashi to tempt them with telling the Rebellion Felgrand's secret identity, giving the rebels the chance to turn Felgrand against the Regime. How this will play out will be seen over the next few chapters or so. Until then, take care.
