After just over a year hearing nothing about Jay, Hailey one morning answers the knock to the door and freezes the moment she finds Jay standing on the other side.
"Hailey?" Jay questions as he did not expect to find Hailey at Voight's house, certainly not this early on a Saturday morning.
Without saying anything, Hailey closes the door in Jay's face. Not slamming the door but closing it like he was not even there.
Jay stays standing in front of Voight's door trying to figure out what just happened. He came to see Voight, he did not expect to run into Hailey.
"Who was it?" Voight asks as he comes up from the basement.
Hailey is standing right behind the door that she just closed. She is staring at the floor and the look on her face tells Voight that it was nothing good.
"Hailey?" Voight questions as he steps closer but the only response he gets is a short shake of her head.
Voight then takes a peek out of the window and see a car driving off but is unable to tell who it is.
"Jay, it was Jay." Hailey whispers like she does not want to hear his name.
Voight comes to stand next to Hailey as he is watching her. He is not too sure how to respond himself. Anger sure, but Jay is not presently here and that is not what Hailey needs right now.
"What did he say?" Voight questions.
"Nothing, I closed the door in his face." Hailey answers as she walks away and makes her way upstairs.
Voight decides to give her some space.
About a half an hour later, Voight calls up the stairs to Hailey. "I've got to go to the office for something, are you coming with?"
There are files that Voight needs to go pick up, but he does not want to leave Hailey alone.
"No, it's fine, I think I'll stay in bed." Hailey answers from upstairs.
Sleeping in is not something that Hailey ever does. She is an early riser and a morning person, so her answer is somewhat unsettling.
"I'll be right back." Voight tells her before he turns and leaves the house.
After Voight has been up to the office and got the files, he comes outside to this car and finds none other than Jay waiting for him.
Voight stops dead in his tracks, not because he is surprised, he stopped so that he can calm himself down before he does something outrageous.
After taking a deep breath and pinning Jay with a death glare, he walks to his car. He ignores Jay as he places the files on the back seat.
"Voight." Jay is the first one to say anything.
"Yeah, what Jay?" Voight is not in the mood to talk to him.
"I came to ask for my old job back." Jay can see that Voight is not in a talking mood, so he just gets right to the point.
"Excuse me?" Voight's tone immediately tells that his anger is about to get out of hand.
"You heard me." Jay realizes that this just went south but he is going to try anyway.
"You have such a nerve to show up here out of the blue and ask for your job back." Voight is angry because Hailey, his supposed beloved wife, did not even know that he was back and the only thing he is worried about is getting his job back.
"I know I've got a lot to make up for….." Jay tries to explain his way but doesn't get far.
"I will never let you back on my unit again, ever." Voight's anger is starting to boil.
"Why not?" Jay feels that there is something else going on. He thought that he and Voight parted on good terms, what is with all the anger?
"Because I don't want you anywhere near Hailey."
"What?" Jay questions but he still has not made the connection.
"You left and I picked up the pieces." Voight points his finger at Jay and then gestures to himself. "So, I don't want you anywhere near her."
"She's my wife." Jay's tone is outraged.
"One you have not spoken one word to in over a year Jay. A year!" Voight's tone is close to a shout.
"What does that have to do with…." Jay knows he is guilty of what Voight is accusing him of but he is not here to fight with him about his marriage, he just wants his job back.
"It has everything to do with it, so go look for a job somewhere else." With that Voight opens his door and he gets in.
"And stay away from Hailey." He gives one last command before shutting his door.
With that Voight pulls out of the parking lot, leaving Jay slightly confused, until he puts the pieces together. Has Voight taken Hailey under his wing?
But what was Hailey doing at his house?
Returning to home, Voight finds Hailey's car is gone.
"Hailey." Voight calls as he steps into the house.
After getting no answer he gives her a call.
"Yeah Sarge." Hailey answers clearly in the middle of something.
Voight just hopes that Hailey did not go and find Jay and that he is busy sweet talking her.
He will not allow it.
"Do you know where to find Jay?" Before Voight can say anything, Hailey starts bombarding him with questions.
"I tried his old apartment, his old number, I can't find him." Hailey sounds determined.
"Hailey why do you want to find him?" Voight's tone edges on the absurd, what is she doing?
"I need to have something delivered to him." Hailey explains.
"Like what?" Voight asks with slight irritation.
"Divorce papers."
There's a short silence before Voight answers. "I'll ask Trudy to check for plates."
"Trudy?"
"Jay came by the precinct to ask for his old job back."
"He what!? And what did you tell him?" Hailey is immediately even more angry than she already is.
"What do you think?" Voight deadpans.
There's another moment of silence.
"Is he still alive?" Hailey must ask the question because you can never be too sure with Voight about certain things.
"Yeah." Voight answer like he's got other plans for him.
With that they end the call and Voight then phones Trudy.
Sometime later, Hailey shows back up at the house with a folder.
"And?" Voight asks as Hailey steps into the living room.
"Papers are ready to be served." Hailey says with a smile.
Voight's phone then rings with Trudy giving him the details she has gathered.
Turns out the plates on the car that Jay is using, belongs to some woman no one has heard of.
So, Jay has not spoken to Hailey in over a year, is back without telling her and he is living with another woman, that just makes the whole situation better.
About an hour later the attorney's office phones to let Hailey know that the papers have been served.
For the rest of the day, they pretend like nothing out of the ordinary happened but both Voight and Hailey have this Jay thing on their minds. Hailey of course more than Voight.
When Burgess called and invited Hailey out for a drink, she even declined that.
The rest of the day then passes as it normally does.
