Chapter 31.

When Olivia woke up the morning of her appointment, she had to admit that she was terrified of what would be said. At her age, no one knew if the baby would be okay. There were genetic issues that could arise, and Olivia didn't know if she and Sonny were strong enough to make it through raising a sick child.

"Your hands are shaking." Sonny spoke, as he sat beside Olivia in her doctor's office. Olivia glanced over at him and forced a shaky smile.

"I'm sorry… I'm just nervous," Olivia admitted softly. She glanced down at her belly and started to wonder if she'd make it through this pregnancy and end up holding her baby in the end.

"Everything will be okay, love. I promise." Sonny smiled lovingly. He leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to her temple before going back to reading through emails.

Olivia looked around the room and frowned deeply. She felt so out of place here, especially since she was considerably older than the other expectant mothers. A lot of them were in the normal age range, some teenagers, but others were from their mid-twenties to their late-thirties. Olivia was well out of that range and couldn't help but feel embarrassed.

She noticed a few women staring directly in her direction, but then she noticed that she was mostly invisible next to Sonny. She was thankful that these judgy women were distracted by the handsome man beside her, instead of the fact she was much older than them and expecting.

Olivia squeezed Sonny's hand and he turned to look at her.

"Yeah?" He asked.

"Thanks for coming," She whispered. Sonny smiled and nodded. He leaned close and kissed her forehead.

"I'd do anything for you, Liv."

Olivia's cheeks turned red and she averted her eyes until a nurse opened a door and called her name.

Olivia and Sonny sat together in a different room than they usually went into. This time it felt much more sterile, like a smaller hospital room. Olivia was anxiously bouncing her leg as she waited for Dr. Moore to come in.

"Olivia, it's nice to see again." Dr. Moore smiled, once she entered the room. She stepped towards the couple and shook their hands.

"It's good to see you too." Olivia struggled to speak.

"I can see that you are nervous, huh?"

"Does it hurt?" Olivia blurted out.

"The amniocentesis?" Dr. Moore mused, as she sat on a stool and rolled it to sit in front of Olivia.

Olivia nodded nervously, as she reached out and grasped Sonny's hand tightly in hers. She couldn't imagine going through this test without someone there beside her.

"Olivia, most of my patients only complain about having cramps that feel like they are on their period. And that's only when the needle is removed. You will have some bruising where I insert the needle, but otherwise you should be fine."

"Should I take her straight home and put her in bed?" Carisi asked. Dr. Moore chuckled softly and smiled at him, before looking at Olivia.

"You have a good one here, Olivia." Dr. Moore spoke, before looking to Sonny. "She doesn't have to be on bedrest. She needs to relax though. Don't pick up Noah or anything heavy. She will be uncomfortable, so you may want to stay close and help keep her as comfortable as possible. Okay?"

"I'll do anything," Sonny said. He looked down at Olivia, before kissing her lips gently. Olivia felt her entire body relax, and she looked at Dr. Moore.

"I'm ready."

"Good. Let me get my tech in here, and we can start with a normal ultrasound. I'll also use the ultrasound machine to guide the needle in and collect the fluid."

Olivia laid on her back, her shirt rolled up, on the exam table. Sonny stood to the side and held her hand as he watched the screen. Dr. Moore stood to the side and watched closely as the tech started the ultrasound.

"Dr. Moore?" The tech mused, as she turned the screen away from the expectant parents.

"Is everything okay?" Olivia asked weakly, as she glanced up at Sonny.

"Mandy can do the exam, but anything serious is my duty to disclose to you. Just take a few breaths," Dr. Moore spoke.

There was some hush speaking, before the tech turned the screen again. Olivia's eyes shot to the screen as the tech spoke and smiled.

"Now, all previous ultrasounds showed that you were only expecting one baby. However, it looks like baby A was hiding its twin. If you look right here, there is baby B."

The couple went silent, as they turned to look at each other. Both were completely shocked to hear the word twins. One baby was hard enough, but two was going to be even harder.

"T-twins?" Sonny struggled to speak, once he was finally able to look away from Olivia's face.

"Yes, twins. Sometimes one baby just hides the other. It happens more than you'd think. This does complicate Olivia's pregnancy even more, but we will monitor all three of them and make sure that nothing happens. Olivia and your babies are in great hands." Dr. Moore spoke.

Dominick felt his legs go weak, and his head started to spin. He gripped on tightly to the edge of the bed as he slid down the wall behind him. Olivia didn't even realize that Dominick had collapsed because she was in her own world.

Twins.
