The life of Sesshomaru and Rykotsu (a.k.a. Rin)

Chapter 5
Normal POV

Shortly after, Sesshomaru landed on the middle of a woodland, near the village of Akiko. It was well known that a wise human princess, named Kiki, resided behind the walls of this village and she held great knowledge of those inside and outside. Sesshomaru did not doubt that this woman knew very well about the intruders in the Eastern Land. 'After all, Master Ryokotsu did state that one of their men had been left to lay there in that village' he thought. Despite him knowing this, he did not stop by to enquire Kiki, but to observe anything unusual around the village. At this very moment it was not important to know more about the man, who resides in Akiko, since he is clearly harmless. What Sesshomaru wanted was clues, which may lead him to understand these foreign people.

The woodland floor is a million hues of brown. The differences are magnified by the moisture, variation on variation. Mingled in are some stones, adding their greys to the mosaic beneath his feet. The trees are khaki over the bark, kissed with moss; on their shaded sides grows lichen as if thrown there like powdered paint, so softly green as to be close to white.

Upon exiting the woodland, Sesshomaru's eyes drifted to the setting sun, which hovered behind Akiko. The yellow ball of fire changed to hues of orange, and then almost tangerine. It merged with the sky, like juice-mix dissolving in a glass of water. The clouds were cotton-candy, as though they blushed at the warm touch of the sun. Silhouettes of birds flew home across a sky that was now magenta; and the sun was half into the water, but its reflection in the sea made it look complete. The mauve of the dusky sky intensified, and in just a while, the biggest star had set, giving way to a thousand others. This was one of the very rare occasions in which the great Sesshomaru was permitted to enjoy nature, although he would typically ignore it. This place bore no sign of the intruders, but a strange scent which had already almost engulfed by the freshly fallen rain.

Sesshomaru quickly jumped onto the branch of the nearest tree and watched a couple of village girls walk past, giggling.

"And have you heard? About that handsome man, Kyoya?" said one of the girls.

"What about him? He hasn't talked to many girls after we saw him half naked in the middle of the street." asked the other.

"Was he the man that was found beaten up? I heard he was a solider serving the Lord, who lived in the tent with a flag with the handfan,"said another.

"Apparently, he is called a Keikiyaku and he's from a city name Kei, in the Other World," stated the first girl.

"In the other world?" asked the other girls, absolutely surprised.

"Well, that is what I overheard him saying to Kiki-sama."

'Interesting' thought Sesshomaru, before he took flight again.

Rin POV

It was the festival of lights, the first night of the Festival of Spring.

From where I stand, on my balcony, I could see how along the usually dark lane shone hundreds of lamps; illuminating with their flickering candles. The light was cast every colour by the tinted panes and I couldn't help but be reminded of candy. Everywhere there were both demons in armour and demonesses in their flowy yukata. The vast village of Koikotsu was not nearly as packed as how it will be in the days to come. My eyes wandered around the crowd under me. I wonder where Master Sesshomaru is...I had seen a couple of days ago at the meeting, but for reason I yearn for his presence. At the stroke of eight on the old town clock would come the first wave of songs, songs of thanks to echo into the homes.

"Where you looking for me?" asked a quite voice.

I turned to see my dearest friend, Tamae no mae, who I called Tama-chan. She looked absolutely beautiful in her pale yellow kimono with gold flowery patterns. This was the first time I had seen her without her armour in a long time. "Well, yes and I wondering where your brother was?"

"You don't need to lie Ryo. I know your looking for my brother. I don't know if he is coming, but all the nobles would be arriving tomorrow morning. Have you forgotten the customs and traditions of the Festival of Spring?" she said, giggling softly.

"I have missed many springs and many mating seasons I was meant to attend. Before that I had been here about 2 times, but my memories are faint. All the customs and traditions are only my slight memories from what Tamayoru had told me," I replied. I felt a pang in my heart when I talked about my elder brother.

"I'm sorry," whispered Tamae, placing her hand on my shoulder. I responded by placing my hand on top of her hand.

"It's fine, Tama-chan,"I said as I smiled. "I'm not going to lie but you look beautiful in that kimono."

In the corner of my eyes, I watched as she blushed bright red. I softly chuckled and walked back into my chamber.

Sesshomaru POV

I sat on balcony, with one leg bent and raised to rest my arm on, gazing at the silver moon was high in the sky giving off the only light. For the past few days, I can't seem to get rid of the image of that demon, named Ryokotsu. His unusually familiar sweet smell has been troubling me since, well not me but my youkai. It has been constantly bringing up the memory I had been 11 youkai years, when he had first come to see this pup. My yokai keeps reminding me that pup was my mate. Disgusting. I, Sesshomaru, would never think of a man in that way. This must all be a mistake.

'Ryokotsu...Ryokotsu..Ryo-'whispered my yokai.

Ryo? Had that not been the name of his sister's dear friend? I closed my eyes to calm my mind. As far as I remember, Tamae has always said Ryo this...Ryo that. Was this the Ryo that Tamae had spoken so highly off? We'll have to see.

'We must. Should we go to that festival before mating season? We will surely come across him there," suggested my yokai.

We must not. I do not want to see him again. He would continue to torment my mind if we did. Then suddenly I heard Ryokotsu's voice saying, I think the bandits may make a presence at this festival." Although, what he had said was a lie or an excuse, it is always a possibility. Also, it would be the best opportunity to inform him the things I had found out about those intruders.

I opened my eyes to look at the Stars which shone as sugar spilt over black marble, glistening in the moonlight.

But how could I convince father to let me go?
