The life of Sesshomaru and Ryokotsu (a.k.a. Rin)

Chapter 7
Sesshomaru POV

We descended down the stairs gracefully, side by side. Somehow it felt right. I, Sesshomaru, never lets anyone be so close to him, but for some odd reason I am not angered by this close proximity with Master Ryokotsu. Aside from the constant nagging from my yokai that he was my mate, I believe these emotions I feel is to make him a friend. It was a rather strange thought, since this Sesshomaru had never considered to make a friend. A stranger's company had been the last thing on my mind this whole time. Although now, after 17 demon years, it could be a great time to get what they call...a friend.

"Good morrow, Ryo," said a familiar voice. My eyes snapped to my sister, Tamae. "Sesshomaru ni-san?"

"Hn,"I replied. She joined by our father momentarily.

"So the rumours are true. Master Sesshomaru and Master Ryokotsu had spent the night together," said my father with an angry frown.

"It wasn't like that Taisho-sama," blurted Ryokotsu, diverting my father's attention. "I had asked Sesshomaru-sama to come to the festival to talk about the new problem we had discussed a few days prior. However, upon arriving he didn't know where to go so came to find me."

"Very well. I believe you, Ryokotsu," expressed my father, before turning to me, "We need to talk." He want to talk about why I came here without asking him. To be honest I wouldn't be able to ask him. I can't tell him how my yokai had been yearning to see Master Ryokotsu all night or how it did not let me sleep.

"Calm down, Taisho-san. We are here to celebrate not to argue or to be angry," sang Lord Rankotsu as he wrapped his arm around my father's shoulder. He nodded at us before taking my father away.

Rykotsu let out a soft feminine giggle, diverting my eyes to him. Seeing how I turned my attention to him, he blushed slightly.

"Let's grab some breakfast and head out quickly," he said in a slightly higher voice then he usually spoke.

I sat at the breakfast table looking over the Mushroom soup, bitter greens with tomatoes the size of peas, rare roast beef slices as thin as paper, noodles in a green sauce, cheese that melts on your tongue served with sweet blue grapes. I noticed the servers, all young people dressed in white tunics move wordlessly to and from the table, keeping the platters an glasses full.

I looked across the table to watch Ryokotsu take this strange soft thing into delicate his hand. It smelled rich, promising a delightful taste. Picking up a knife, he applied copious amounts of thick, creamy yellow butter. He spooned out a dollop of sweet, tangy blackberry jelly. Evelyn slathered the sweet mixture onto the spongy white bread. He ripped off a chunk, stuffing the piece into his mouth. I curiously repeated what he had done. It was soft and warm. The pleasant smoothness of the butter blended perfectly with the bitter-sweet taste of black berries. Soon after we were done with breakfast and took flight as Ryokotsu ha insisted he wanted to show me a much more pleasant side of the Southern Lands.

The grass grew in tussocks and flattened in waves with each gust of wind, only to spring up as fresh as a bunch of flowers right after. It was nothing like the uniform green of the meadow back home that almost looked combed. Each tuft was wild and slightly yellowing under the sun and between each there was bare soil, baked and powdery. A field of lavender, sweet and purple. The green stalks swaying in the wind, the flowers filling the air with their fragrance. Edge of woodland, slopes down gently to bramble filled ditch, ditch overgrown with cow parsley and nettles, bare patches, thick lush dew laden grass, cowslip with it's broad yellow flowers trumpeting the music of spring, Dandelions, Ragwort, scattered clusters of rabbit droppings, hawthorn hedge, five bar gate, brook half chocked with weeds, purple thistle, bumble bee, rutted track, cow pats, clump of previously denuded branches offered their wands of tight green bud to the brilliant rays of spring. Gently undulating, steep, grassy knoll, rocky scree slope, springy turf of moss and grass, wooded, pasture, broken up with hedgerows like a great patchwork quilt, grazed by sheep.

Here the nature is more joyful than anything on the Western Lands. Back home the beaten and dishevelled greens of the grass mingles with the brighter hue of the mosses and the dullness of the earth. The trees lie lower to the ground than those in the dense woodlands further off. They hunker down to give a lower profile to the wind, pointless though it is. The wind howls without mercy day and night, bitter in the long winter months and kinder by summer. Here there are real flowers with petals that look painted by a carnival queen.

"I take it you like what you see, Sesshomaru-sama," he said as he sat by my leg on the grassy hills.

"Indeed. It is very much pleasant here."

"Someone special used to bring me here as a very young pup, but he's not alive anymore," Ryokotsu said softly, staring of into the distance.

My yokai throbbed hearing the sadness in his voice. My hand reached out to touch his shoulder, but he looked up with a smile, making me retrieve my hand quickly.

"It's okay now. You're the first person I've brought here outside of my family, Sesshomaru-sama."

"Call me, Sesshomaru," I stated calmly. A shocked expression fell over his face. "What is it?"

"Tamae told me that you never let anyone address you without your title," he exclaimed.

I looked away from his glowing eyes and whispered, "You're different..."

I heard Ryokotsu's heartbeat fasten, as he clasped his hand across his heart.

Smiling softly, he looked down and whispered softly, "Sesshomaru."

Suddenly, a shiver went down my spine, making my yokai purr loudly. I fought the urge to grab him by his arm and pull him closer to me. This is strange.
