The few remaining Cyndaquil and Quilava survived radically changing their nature by becoming more violent and aggressive (a change that can be seen in the recent mutation that the Johtian Typhlosions had, they lost their astral connection with the afterlife, and by that also losing the Ghost type), the Cyndaquils were put under protection from the johtonese government during the early 1970s.

From over 15,600 members of the Chikorita evolutionary family that existed in Johto prior to 1858, only 2,000 remained alive.
The already dramatic situation of these Pokemon was also exacerbated by the Galarian Empire which through the port of Asagi (Olivine) supported the poaching and trade of the Leaf Pokemon, the Galarian traders exported Bayleef leaves to Hemujin and Hoenn.
The hunt for these Pokemon stopped with the collapse in the value of Bayleef leaves during the 20th century, but the damage was already done, the total population of Chikorita and Bayleef hovered at a bare 160.
The remaining Chikoritas and Bayleefs were adopted by the Johtonese government after the end of the Great World War to be fostered in captivity away from potential poachers.

In response to this offense, the militarist kantonese government ordered a roundup of the islanders and the Totodile evolution family Pokemon (almost 15,000 on Tanba alone) most of the prisoners ended up in the concentration camps of the Whirl Islands, the Pokemon Big Jaw, in particular, were thrown in concentration camps surrounded by electric barbed wire.
In these fields, many people and Pokemon lost their lives, Totodile and Croconaw were the preferential targets of the kantonese military police, due to their status as a symbol of resistance, so the kantonese government began an extermination program against these Pokemon.
At the end of the war, about 400 were released between Totodile, Croconaw, and Feraligator, their population was halved by a lot, and many of the Pokemon Big Jaw perished from a killer bacterium introduced by the kantonese army in Johto with the specific objective of wiping out as many enemy Pokemon as possible.
The remaining Pokemon members of the Totodile evolution family were placed under the protection of the johtonese government, later becoming a Starter Pokemon.

Finally, the second chapter of this great journey closes, I can't wait to start writing the chapters on Hoenn (here Game Freak begins to explore the theme of conflict of ideologies, like Team Magma and Team Aqua) As always, I invite you to leave your opinion or criticism in the comment. Also, I want to make a shot out to the Italian Pokemon Youtuber Cydonia and fanfic writer Birdboy, they were of inspiration for the making of this series. For more information on my next works, I invite you to follow me on Tiktok: yumegamiaion With that said, stay tuned for the next region, Hoenn, stay safe and till next time, farewell.
